this is a very good guide for any serious elvis records collector or aficionado. Not only shows every official Elvis' cd,(Rca camdem budget, greatest hits...) even follow that dream editions and bootlegs and pirate recordings, with comments about the content of every recording, and of course complete song list of every album.A very help for every elvis fan. Good edition with all the covers printed in full color.

Looking for an Elvis discography book? Don't buy this!

This book did not add anything to my collection of Elvis books at all. Yes, there are the standard issues of Elvis records in color, as well as many bootlegs featured. BUT, there are too many records missing to make this book the least complete. Many records are only featured with pictures, no track-listing, why? This information is very easy to obtain on the net. Seems research was very poor.
The bootlegs featured, are from the author's own collection. There are great color photos of the covers, and tracklistings on most of the records. But why limit the number of recorde to his own collection? Again, has there been made a research to complete the book with more material? No.

If you don't have a discography book with Elvis' records, you could buy it. If you have any before, this won't add much. If you don't have any bootleg discography, this book could be worth buying.
There are far too many much better books on the market.

This covers the basics of report writing, and information to officers on basic grammar and structure rules. It's not some huge novel, and is a relatively quick read...good for briefings, etc.

A good tool to have handy.

I teach a report writing course at a local community college. I receive dozens of textbooks every year to review on criminal justice, many of them purported to be "report writing made easy" manuals. Mostly they are complex re-hashes of English grammar and writing composition, but do not really delve into the nuts and bolts of police report writing. I have used this text, and its various editions, for 9 years. It is easy to use. The book is layed out in a logical sequence to assist the new report writer in grasping the complexities of police reports and the exercises used in the book emphasize simplicity and proper English grammar. A must book for anyone who is a cop or is contemplating a career as a law enforcement officer.

I love this book don't get me wrong but somethings missing. i think Joel dosen't cover all but most the the history of the top forty leaving out little hits such as Girl i Used To Kniw by Brother beyond and Let G By sharron Bryant to namwe a few. I wish 2 things to make this book a 5

1. That Joel included each and every top 40 hit on the Billboard pop charts and didn't miss any not even 1
2 that his recard reserch web site had a update for the new songs that he would pick that were too new for this book. I am a music collecer with a very large Cd libary of over 8000 cd's and am having a very hard time trying to figure out what to put on my players and Joels book is very helpful. I had to go to the billboqard site to find out what was charting for the second half of 05 and all of 06 as it is not mentioned in this book. I also think that joel is a little bit skimpy when choosing to include songs from other charts and below the top 40 on the pop charts.

I've complained long enough there are meny things that make this book a 4 star .

1. He included a verylarge amount of album track that did not chart witch is not limited to the pop genre.
2. he does go into the other charts some what I weould go further but he did give it a great try.
3. this book is very easy to use and a great buy for the price.
If your not a prtson for perfection when I comes to your music lists this book is for you. If you just want to sampling of the top hits for your player this book is for you. all in all it was and will be very helpful in my recoprding songs for my mini machine just nexdt time think about the songs that are too mew for tyhe book and maybe look to the web for the answer

A book like this is necessarily subjective. Picking the 14,000 "essential" songs of the past 50 years is a tough call. Fans of certain groups will be disappointed by either the choice of songs from that group or the very absence of the group from the list. I'd say this selection is a pretty good representation of the hits from the mainstream of the popular genres. It is useful for figuring out who recorded a song if you know it's title or for compiling a collection of a broad range of hits from the past fifty years.

That said, it does not help me with my most frequent problem. It's frustrating to know just some lyrics that aren't actually the title or, worse yet, to know only the melody. I'm too shy to hum melodies for some employee of a record store. I've found some web sites that can be used to search based on lyrics, but this can be tedious. I'd like to find a better search engine. When I hear a song in a commercial that I like, there are websites that can help find those. Now all I need is one that can search based on a hummed melody.

Anyway, this is a fun book for the price. At the very least, it gives me some ideas of which songs to try first when sampling a group I've never listened to before.

It may be a perfectly wonderful book but reaching the slopes of Mount Erebus is no feat since it is right outside of McMurdo Station. As a person who has spent time working at all 3 Antarctic Station, I find the book description overblown. I'm sure the book itself is full of wonderful photos as Antarctic is truly a stunning place. However, if someone is looking for an adventure story, I doubt if this covers it.

Review Date: 2005-05-19
David Carmicheal has written a great work with Organizing Archival Records. This simple book covers the basics of archival arrangement and description. Carmicheal describes the function of archives, distinguishes well between archives and manuscript collections, and offers a step-by-step method for arranging records. This book is a great resource for those who have had no formal archival training. Likewise, it serves as a helpful training manual for an archivist to use in training workers. Carmichael's appendices include a wide variety of examples of finding aids and a number of exercises to use in learning how to arrange records. The one drawback I have found to the book is that it did not include instructions for the CD-ROM, and I have not yet been able to get the accompanying programs on the CD-ROM to work yet, although that could be because of systems problems on my end.

(Postscript, 20 May 2005) I finally managed to get the CD-ROM installed on my computers. The database program worked initially, and then inexplicably stopped working. There is no customer support for the CD. I still highly recommend this book, but I would not recommend anyone to buy it in order to get the software. It seems too unstable.

Despite the claim that this caters to the needs of plaintiffs, defendants and medical consultants, this book is primarily geared to the legal practitioner who needs a comprehensive background knowledge in medicine and clinical practice. This is so obvious when a major portion of the book is dedicated to "Medicine for Lawyers". The book gives a respectable overview of the nuances of medical practice. This may be helpful to the uninitiated prosecuting or defending a malpractice case. Those already deep into the practice of medical litigation will find it trite. I find it too expensive for its contents. There are other books on the subject matter with more meat at less cost.

Well suited as a course textbook.

Lewis overviews winning strategies for locating and selecting medical experts and consultants. The critical aspect of defendant performance within or below professional standards for clinical practice is explained, along with analysis of what type of expert witness could most effectively appraise and testify regarding these standards. The author concludes this discussion with a listing of resources for further investigation of experts and professional standards.

This book is a classic. It is interesting and complete review of the interface between Intelligent Design and Evolution. It discusses in detail the following areas: Human Origins, Genetics and Macroevolution, the Fossil Record, the Origin of Species, Similar Features, Irreducible Complexity, Specified Complexity, the Origin of Life, and Meanings of "Evolution." I enjoyed reading it, and value the book as an historical account of scientific areas of study in the last hundred years, as well as a descriptive account of specific areas of research. Great endnotes and glossary! Students and teachers will find this a treasure.

Let me start by saying that giraffes may very well have evolved from antelopes, however, random mutation had absolutely nothing to do with it.

The idea that random mutation created the immense and amazing complexity of life is so farcical, so absurd, and so illogical, that it boggles my mind to think of the masses of intelligent individuals who have taken up the cudgels wholeheartedly.

We are supposed to believe the fairy tale that a beneficial mutation that occurs once in million individuals contributes to evolution. Yes, maybe a rare beneficial mutation can confer a survival or reproductive advantage to the individuals that carries it, however, that presupposes that the hordes of deleterious mutations that are always piling up over time are having no effect whatsoever.

I have no problem with natural selection. It is proven and valid. But when it comes to random mutation...well we have web sites such as "talkorigins" that will deluge the reader to form an impression that all is well on the random mutation front. However, upon closer inspection, does it really? Here's where I must choose my words carefully because I know the hard core fanatics will try to parse the words to fit their specious agenda.

Can it truly cite one paper, book or experiment anywhere in the annals of biology that empirically demonstrates and proves that random mutation of DNA produces novel adaptive features (eyes, wings, legs, functional organs); and that the mutations that produced those features were in fact random. Taken in the entire context the preceding sentence, which by any objective account is responded with an emphatic NO, renders random mutation as possibly the greatest myth in modern science.

It is easy to see why skepticism of Neo Darwinian evolution runs rampant in the Intelligent Design community, as well as the genera public, and this book provides a good measure of it, but it doesn't go far enough.

I am more inclined to believe that evolution is an engineered process rather than a product of random mutation, and I'll tell you why.

I'll specifically refer to work completed by Dr. James A. Shapiro, Professor of Microbiology at the University of Chicago who published a fascinating paper in the Journal of Biological Physics (2002) whereupon he theorizes that "random mutation" be discarded and replaced with a much more sophisticated, engineered process. Instead of seeing DNA as a static database that is acted on by outside random forces, it is now seen as being more like a self-correcting operating system that repairs files, amends errors, and adapts to changing circumstances.

Shapiro's work clearly shows that evolution, however it may be understood, is anything but a random process.

His work basically continues along the same vein as Dr. Barbara McClintock, one of the world's most distinguished cytogeneticists, and 1983 Nobel Prize laureate for her discovery of genetic transposition. In essence, she showed that damaged chromosomes re-arrange themselves in an impressively sophisticated pattern of internal genetic engineering. Again, that is far from a random process.

It is regretful that Dembski and Wells did not incorporate some aspect of their work in the Design of Life. Hence the four stars.

Other reviewer's dissect this books deeply flawed thesis.

I simply want to point out that Michael Behe - who enthusiastically endorses this book - is a sham - a flam-flam man who shoots his mouth off about intelligent design, but refuses to recite his beliefs and alleged "facts" when under judicial oath.

Behe is Elmer Gantry redux - an evangelical con-man, out to make a quick buck by shooting off his mouth.

These two authors are some of the most qualified and most interesting on Intelligent Design. With quantum mechanics incorporating rapid developments in the field of consciousness studies, you need to be reading current developments on information/intelligent control over biological progession upward in complexity. This means you should be reading books on Intelligent Design. If you are a person who 'wants to know' what is going on in scientific debates nowadays, you should understand and consider both sides of the ID/evolution debate. (I don't consider creationism scientific, but ID definitely is. Read the writers' qualifications, not the pundits opinions. Was Dean Kenyon's Biochemical Predestination worthless? No way!) The critics of this book read ID books to 'protect you.' You've heard that line before, haven't you -- in books like George Orwell's 1984?) These pundits want you to steer clear of ID books, but they use pompous attacks, evidently distrusting anyone's critical reading abilities but their own. Perhaps I use such arguments, too, but at least I trust your intelligence. From my experience in Asia, the American people of all age levels are ready to hear both sides of the argument. Even our high schoolers have some of the best critical thinking/analysis abilities in the world. Asia is no match for America and the West in my opinion in lay intellectual ability, and I have taught Japanese movie stars and doctors English. One of my advisors in my studies for my M.A. in Anthropology once nudged me in the direction of theistic evolution as an alternative to Darwinism. I think he was a theistic evolutionist, but no one can admit it in Academia. (Is this 1984 again?) So I for one take all this hubris as overblown hype. I don't believe all the anti-ID propaganda. Do you? Got'cha! (Please check the meaning of that out.) This is a very good and interesting book. Seriously consider reading it!

Truth is a two way street.

Most people have fixed opinions, regardless of their academic achievements. All of us have gaps in our knowledge base. The gaps are filled in by faith. We must always be willing to entertain objections to our faith, whether materialistic evolutionists or intelligent designers.

After reading the first chapter of this book, I couldn't help but think is this what kind of education I am paying for? The poster who wrote that this is racial propaganda was being modest. This is communist BS. If you are white, you are rich and powerful trying to keep everyone down, if you are black you are poor and have no options, if you are Mexican you are unwanted...etc. This is stereotyping at its finest and the author doesn't understand that stereotyping goes beyond the meathead comments like "everybody knows you have to be black to play basketball". The author also gives an explanation of how racially divided sports like basketball and football (professionally) and has the audacity to state that the vast profits sports generate are controlled by a small number of people (predominantly white men).

The cynicism has stripped any credibility for me. The author could have stated something positive about how well blacks are at these sports and the majority of blacks in football and basketball is due to them outperforming others in their area and I guess multi-million dollar a year contracts are chicken feed. I get tired of this racial division being forced down throats of young Americans during their education. This type of material is moving to divide America through people who buy into this stuff. It reinforces stereotypes, creates hatred and cynicism from everyone's perspective, and doesn't even remotely give the impression that America is a great nation and place to live. This material is pounded into people's minds so much throughout their education that they start believing it and forget about the opportunities out there for all Americans.

I will do what a previous poster said they would do--throw it in the bonfire when I am done!

Thorough Disappointment

I felt as if Macionis was trying to be uber-apologetic for what he believed are sins of the white race. I feel that he negatively stereotypes whites and Asian-Americans, bashes anthropological research, quotes himself too much, and contradicts his quotes and the quotes of sociology's greats. These faults will be obvious to anyone who processes the material rather than just memorizing for testing purposes.

Macionis emphasizes Weber's fundamental belief that when a sociologist adds their own values to their work they have moved into the political realm. He is guilty of this throughout the text. His latent function of education section is very entertaining (sarcasm). The only positive thing I can say about the book is that I was introduced to the real sociologists: Berger, Weber, Merton, Durkheim, Parsons, Liazos, etc.

After numerous hours with the Kaplan Tech support, I've come to the following conclusion, if you own a MacIntosh and are looking for technical support from Kaplan, you are sorely out of luck. Although I've tried running the CD-Rom on different computers, they are still not wiling to admit that there is something wrong with the CD-Rom, rather than all the computers I've tried. It sounds like the CD-Rom is helpful....if it will run on your computer.
