Short and sweet, Samuel Katz is the man when it comes to finding information on special forces, especially the elite Israeli units. Alongside the British SAS, the Israeli special forces are the busiest in the world and in this book you get a clear, concise view of all of the major units that are out there. Simply put, this information is nowhere else. All of his books are worth tracking down and ordering, if not here, go to abebooks.com or bibliofind.com. It's money well spent.

For some time I have been interested in Israeli special Forces, but appropriate information were difficult to come by. This book offers adequate professional information on the subject, that, combined with great pictures and writter's appealing stile of writting, form an unique book. I found this book by accident in a bookstore, but if I knew about it sooner, I would certainly order it before.

I once heard that Lenin was a great admirer of Connolly, and having just finished Guerrilla Days In Ireland by Tom Barry I though it would be a good idea to learn a little more about the origins of the IRA by reading Connolly so I purchased this book. What I found was a writer far more accessible that the likes or Marx or Lenin who at times can be a little difficult to read for the layman. Connolly speaks the simple unadulterated truth and I have to agree with my fellow reviewer, Connolly has definitely removed a cloud of confusion in my mind on the conflict in Ireland.
On a personal note I am a former member of the Industrial Workers of the World, Connolly was also a member of the union and like any socialist worth his salt he was a union organizer, Connolly reiterated in my mind the importance of putting economic action before political action. Like any good student of Connolly I feel I must quote him...
"The enrollment of the workers in unions patterned closely after the structure of modern industries, and following the organic lines of industrial development, is par excellence, the swiftest, safest and most peaceful form of constructive work the socialist can engage in. It prepares within the framework of capitalist society the working forms of the Socialist Republic, and thus, while increasing the resisting power of the worker against present encroachments of the capitalist class, it familiarizes him with the idea that the union he is helping to build up is destined to supplant that class in the control of the industry in which he is employed.
The power of this idea to transform the dry detail work of trade union organization into the constructive work of revolutionary socialism and thus to make the unimaginative trade unionist a potent factor in the launching of a new system of society cannot be overestimated." (Socialism made easy)
This is one of those books where as I'm reading it I found myself tearing up little strips of paper book marking numerous pages to be reread and quoted, I find it easy now to understand why he is so influential.

I borrowed this book from a friend and had to obtain a copy for my own personal library.
The introduction is so moving that anyone interested in modern Irish History will not put it down.
Connolly's viewpoints on Socialism, Nationalism, and the Catholic Church lifted an enormous cloud of confusion I have had since my early schooldays in Belfast.

Father Burtchaell's presentation of this series of events in Italy is a joy to read. The issues go beyond conscription/conscientous objection to civil disobedience and legislation. Don Lorenzo's life and story are enlightening, and the way in which he made a protest into changes in Italian law is a model of effecting change. Father Milani's logic is clear and powerful, using masterful rhetoric. This would make an excellent book for a seminar on civil rights or related topics. The book concerns a Catholic priest, and is written as well by one. It does contain religious debate, and it might present problems if used in a public school. But its tale, only lightly framed by the author, is told mostly in letters, articles and court documents of the time. The nearest figure in American history to Father Milani might be Henry David Thoreau.

This book provides a detailed insight into how Soviet leaders used their internal intelligence agency as an instrument of ultimate oppression. Lots of well-documented detail. The present tense only gets in the way for a bit (remember it was published while this was still going on -- before the fall of the USSR) and does not alter the facts as they were under the Soviet system. There is no other book which gives one quite the depth and insight this one does. Definitely a MUST for anyone interested in how things really worked in the USSR. Its a lesson to all of us. You want this book.

The book reveals the unique qualifications and inside knowledge of the two authors. There is no better description of the systematic repression of a modern population. Its appearance just before the fall of the Soviet Union invalidated its present tense, nevertheless, for anyone interested in how Soviet power survived for 70 years, this is the definitive work. A must for students of this subject.

A magnificent book about a true freedom fighter

Review Date: 2008-01-13
This book has been 23 years in the making, and it has been well worth waiting for. It's a meticulously researched account of Viktor Kravchenko who defected from the Soviets in 1944 and lived to tell the world about life in Uncle Joe's paradise in a blockbuster bestseller titled `I Chose Freedom' published in 1946 and translated into numerous languages. It came out just a month after Churchill had delivered his famous Iron Curtain-speech and called for the West to counter communist aggression and treachery. This was a reality check which put an end to the West's gullibility about the nature of Stalin's dictatorship. Communists and fellow-travellers all over the world rose in fury to attack Kravchenko who was depicted as a tool in the arsenal of cold warriors - if he existed at all. Kravchenko sued a French journal for libel and won the ensuing `case of the century' with flying colors. Gary Kern leaves no stone untouched and conclusively documents that Kravchenko was very much his own man. With poor English and no knowledge of US literary style a collaborator - Eugene Lyons - actually wrote the prose but the contents is all Kravchenko's. Kern traces his story up to recent years to the meeting between Kravchenko's two sons - one Soviet who experienced the Gulag, the other American - who had lived their lives unaware of the existence of the other. After reading this book no one can seriously claim that the Cold War was the West's `fault'.

Gary Kern, well-known for his major book on the defector Krivitsky (A DEATH IN WASHINGTON), has now published a fascinating and thorough study of Victor Kravchenko, using archives and documents not previously available. Kravchenko was a defector from the Soviet bureaucracy who was the first to warn the West about Stalin's post-war plans and the first to reveal the extent of the Gulags. His life was complicated by his aggressive temperament, but it was that temperament that led him to confront Stalinists in the course of a bitter trial in France. Kern has digested massive amounts of material here, and one begins to understand better the roots of the Cold War and Kravchenko's role in educating Americans about Stalin's true attitudes. Along the way we are given mini-biographies of Soviet spies in America, a discussion of why Krachenko was against McCarthyism and a revealing look at the nature of the French Communist Party. All in all, a stunning work of scholarship.

We need this book for the struggles of today

An explosion of working class militancy that created the CIO and other industrial unions, won whatever decent conditions working people have, medical benefits, social security, welfare, and other rights. Art Preis, a trade union militant and writer for the socialist newspaper The Militant wrote this book because he believed that the workers of his future, that is us today, would need this history to learn how to fight harder, better and more successfully than the workers of the 1930s. That's why he also explains how the trade union bureaucrats' policy of supporting government war polices and supporting the Democratic and Republican parties helped throttle these labor upsurges. This book tracks the story of the rise of the CIO and other industrial unions and the big strike battles they wages in the 1930s and 1940s. Here we see how millions of workers and their families and allies like farmers, African Americans, and women fought the big business class and won. We need this book because every day the government and the employers try to cut back our benefits, take away rights, and try to break the unions, just as every day we see rising resistance by working people. We need to use the lessons and example of the struggles explained here to launch bigger ones that can win not only union power, but political for working people.

I really love this book because it shows what workers are capable of. It's a long book, but that's because there are so many great stories to tell of what working people accomplished in the 1930s and 40s. If you go by what you learn in school, you would think that anything workers ever got in this country is due to the generosity of Franklin Roosevelt. But this book shows how workers had to overcome the resistance of the "liberal" Roosevelt on many fronts, from the fraud of the NRA to the Minneapolis Teamster trials to FDR's open strikebreaking before and during World War II. Another amazing thing about this story is that, as the author explains, most people thought the labor movement was dead in the water right before this huge upsurge happened that created the CIO. It is a good lesson for today to remind us that big battles are coming and that workers can win.

This is the most extensive and authoritative account of the Rwandan genocide yet published. Drawing from Rwandan government documents and other official and unofficial sources, the principal author, Alison Des Forges, and her collaborators, have done a remarkable job pulling together the complex and disparate strands of this story. For interpretation and discussion of the meaning of the Rwandan genocide - which this volume largely eschews - interested readers are referred to the works of such expert scholars as Rene Lemarchand, Gerard Prunier, Catharine Newbury, and Jean-Pierre Chretien.
