Doctor Who in world's longest running war zone

The first round of novelisations of Doctor Who happened back in 1965. "The Crusaders" is the third of these. (Novelisations did not recommence until 1973 under the Target banner.)

The Doctor, Ian, Barbara and Vicki arrive in twelfth century Palestine, and are soon split up: Barbara is captured by the Saracens, while the rest fall in with King Richard the Lionhearted. While Ian is knighted and dispatched with a message to Saladin and to rescue Barbara, the Doctor and Vicki are caught up in court intrigue. Given the way things go, one could argue which of them is in the most danger.

Strong characterisation by David Whitaker (author of both the original script and this book) makes this book a very good read (sadly, we only have half of the story still existing on video), and yet again demonstrates that the historical stories were often very good, exceeding the science fiction stories in some cases.

This book is illustrated by line drawings. I wish it wasn't. They aren't very good.

Would the internet explode if the Ghost fought Emma Frost? The artist's pants might, however! Good-girl dominatrix elements aside, a reasonable enough superheroic crossed supernatural story, with a supporting cast and a city that hold the interest. A bit of a role reversal with the male crime fighter she runs across. Can you trust a group of female friends?

The second Elseworlds Nail book by Alan Davis. This is complete with your usual different takes on some of the characters, but unfortunately it does not live up to the standard set by the first volume. You should only get this one if it is cheap, really, or you are a JLA Elseworlds nut, or something like that. The art is good though.

Great premise, disappointing delivery

A story originally appearing in JLA: Classified, Kid Amazo focuses on the "son" of old JLA foe Amazo, who is unaware of his true nature and what he really is. Naturally, the lad's world comes crashing down upon discovery of his heritage, with the Justice League naturally on the receiving end. Written by gifted and underrated scribe Peter Milligan (it wasn't that long ago that he and Mike Allred turned heads with X-Statix was it?), Kid Amazo focuses more on the philosophical musings of everyone involved instead on the potentially interesting developings of this new character, and the JLA's response in which just doesn't go anywhere. Carlos D'Anda offers some solid artwork, but as a whole, Kid Amazo just wastes potential. All in all, Kid Amazo is worth a look for Justice League fans or fans of Milligan, but what you'll find is sadly wasted potential.

A truly bizarre opponent for Old Stoneyface, as a group of gluttons try and get their own way and stymie the judges, via PR and other methods.

The art drew me and I gave it a shot. There isn't much to this beyond the pretty pictures. Rather like a caricature of Preacher without as much 'ridiculous'. The edge here fails to be edgy, so I file it under meh.

Fun for some people

This book, a collection of the second wave of stories featuring "amalgamated" characters from Marvel and DC, is, in short, just so-so. The first wave introduced us to fun characters like Super-Soldier (a Superman/Captain America cross), Dark Claw (Batman/Wolverine), and Amazon (Wonder Woman/Storm). It was a new experiment and a pleasant experience. The second time is not as fun; tons of back-story knowledge is required to understand the significance of any one character. Most of the fun and energy seems to be missing.

There are, indeed, redeeming factors. The story "Super-Soldier: Man of War" is set during WWII and has some endearing guest stars. "The Dark Claw Adventures" emulates the art and story of the super-popular animated Batman series. And, as always, it is an intriguing comparison of some of the finest heroes of both universes. Fans of the first series will want this book for their collection. Anyone else will want it as a coaster for their cold drink.

As a direct descendant of Madame Ernestine Schumann-Heink, I found this book to have little biographical information but it is loaded with operatic history of this great dame of the Opera. Madame Schumann-Heink was a well known citizen of the United States during the early part of the 20th century and this book covers in detail the history of her operatic performances and her appearances before the american public.
