How the establishment resisted a dedicated medical specialist

This is a hard-to-obtain account revealing the machinations of the medical establishment in resisting the scientific truth about water fluoridation. Dr. Waldbott was a careful, dedicated physician who conducted his own research into the dangers of ingesting fluoride compounds--especially the most soluble compounds that are used for water fluoridation. It is a sobering account, and well worth reading in order to understand the manipulations that characterised the early stages of the fluoridation promotion campaign. Dr. Waldbott, a graduate of the Heidelberg Medical School, who immigrated into the US, was a world-renowned specialist in the field of allergic diseases, and the first to pinpoint smoking as a cause of emphysema. He was also co-author of Fluoridation: The Great Dilemma with Albert Burgstahler, PhD, professor of Organic Chemistry at the university of Kansas, and H. Lewis McKinney, PhD, professor of the History of Science at Cornell. With modern studies revealing further dangers of water fluoridation, these books have returned to prominence as essential reading for those interested in unearthing the background concerning the practice of water fluoridation, its early promotion, and its serious dangers. Although the book is well written, it is a tough read because of the detail provided.

Devil's Avenger, Revised Edition

I also read The Devil's Avenger, by Burton Wolfe (1974), and experienced extreme deja vu. Going back and comparing them, I find many parts identical, often word for word. Read them both and judge for yourself.
Some have written that Anton LaVey ghost-wrote both books. That would explain the situation, and why Wolfe (or heirs?) took no action against the newer book.
I regard this book as a revised and updated edition of The Devil's Avenger.

Martial arts mayhem (and some pretty great cheesecake art, too) is what you have here.

One of Black Canary's teachers, her sensei, has been killed. The same applies to Lady Shiva. Neither are big fans of the other, and Shiva has ulterior motives where the Canary is concerned.

They have to work out a truce so they can find out what happened. Crazy chases begin, drawing in many others. Top notch work.

This iteration of the Seven Soldiers, gathered together to fight the influence of the Sheeda, after the first batch of low rent heroes Vigilante gathered were butchered, are :-

Shining Knight
Guardian
Bulleteer
Klarion
Frankenstein
Zatanna
Mister Miracle

In this case, it is the 'other' Mister Miracle, not Scott Free. Further in to the story, they begin to understand a little of what is happening, but are still a bit freaked, in general.

Fantasy up there with Tolkein
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-05-12
"The Seventh Sorcerer" is the third fantasy novel I've read. In my life. The other two would be the first two books of Tolkein's "Rings" trilogy, of which "The Seventh Sorcerer" beats, hands down. I'm not a huge fan of fantasy - it's just one of those things. But where "Rings" more often than not goes off on long, drawn out paragraphs (pages, even) of description, Harris keeps the story moving along at a clip.

Carsten is a latter-day (or former day) Anakin Skywalker. He has special powers, he has a birthright stating he is a Chosen One, and he has a mentor whom he doesn't always see eye-to-eye with. It is the relationship between Carsten and his mentor, Anheedren, that drives the first half of the novel. Carsten is growing up, coming of age, and he'll be the first to tell you he's not doing a bang-up job of it. Where Anakin Skywalker was overly-sure of himself, Carsten doesn't believe in himself at all - something I can easily relate to as I'll be the first to tell you I'm less than a stellar guy.

But it's Harris' writing style that draws in the reader. Although the novel is set in Days of Past, it has a very modern-day way of telling the story. There are many characters, and never once are you confused as to who's who or who's doing what to whom at any point because of Harris' ability to quickly flesh out a character so that they're memorable. You easily follow Carsten on his journey of self-discovery as he does his best to save the Seven Kingdoms, and when it's all over, you've been on that journey with him. And the friends (and enemies) he picks up along the way.

Turning the Corner

Review Date: 2004-10-25
Book 3 of the Dark Horse Comics reprints of Marvel's Star Wars comics is a fine achievement in itself, and these books have never looked better! In fact, doing a back to back comparison with this trade paperback and the original comics will shock you as to how much improved these re-colored reprints are!

As for the issues covered in this volume (#39-53), there is a definite improvement in the overall quality: The art is getting away from the blocky (but well-liked by this reviewer) style of Carmine Infantino, which is still present, but the absolutely gorgeous art of Al Williamson and Walt Simonson is more striking and the characters look more like the onscreen actors from Star Wars. This is especially evident on the "Empire Strikes Back" adaptation featured in the first six issues of this volume.

The writing gets better with these issues, too. Archie Goodwin and David Michelinie have always been superb storytellers and they turn in some fine work here. I particularly enjoyed Michelinie's 2-part "Tarkin" story which blew me away as a ten year-old back in '81. Mike W. Barr's "The Last Jedi" is another story I liked as a kid, but it's even better and more poignant through adult eyes.

The Dark Horse reprints of the Marvel Star Wars comics are definitely worth getting, especially if you're wary of constantly digging out those old, yellowing copies from your original comic book collection. I'm so happy that someone saw fit to re-release these comics, which were so important to my friends and I as kids, almost as important as the movies! The Marvel books kept us entertained and inspired us to create our own characters that would inhabit our own small corner of the vast "Star Wars Universe."

Space Adventure in Another Galaxy
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2005-10-12
This is one of the Christian sci-fi books that I loved as a pre-teen. The back cover reads, "Nobody seems to know what's happened to him. Until two days ago his signal was coming through loud and clear, and then he... he just vanished! Zak Anderson, aged sixteen and a newly qualified space pilot, is determined to find his father -- missing in unexplored space. By a strange accident Zak and his friends find themselves in a far-off galaxy, on an unknown planet.."

The planet "Terran" is what Earth would have been like without The Fall. Zak's space ship brings a copy of the Bible in its library, and they use it to expose the enemy in the new garden of Eden.

Though written in 1984, the story line has not grown dusty and the "science fiction" aspect is still palatable. A fun adventure for children, with a clear presentation of the Gospel.

One of the best!

I saw the movie first in Imax 3-D and it was amazing! This script by Bryan Singer is spectacular. The only downside for me (for the movie & script) was the character of Kitty (Lex's dumb girlfriend). Parker Posey is annoying at best. Her only role I liked was in Scream 3. As for the character of Kitty, expect someone shallow , annoying & completely not needed in this story (or movie).

Overall, though, Superman Returns is one of the best scripts for comic book movies out there. You can tell there is a lot of love and insight into the character of Superman. Unfortunately they treat Clark Kent as a disguise only, unlike Smallville where Clark is the real him and Superman will be the disguise.

The plot is a little out there. Lex wants to get his share of money from the world by creating basically a new Krypton on earth. When Lois says (quote from memory, might be off a little) "but it will kill millions" Lex responds "Wrong. Billions!" well who's going to pay to live on this land if billions die? For an evil genius this is Lex's dumbest comments. Sure he is supposed to have a downfall so Superman can beat him, but something so simple should have been better thought out.

Otherwise, the script is very well done. Even if you don't see the movie first, it is a quick read and well worth the buy.
