Great Science Thriller!

Fresh and original, hard core science thriller. Not for the faint of heart!

Wow, I was totally immersed and enthralled in this story. Author does an excellent job of explaining complex scientific theories like string theory and relativity and intertwines a spiritual symbolism that is very reminiscent of the late Carl Sagan. Some of the dialogue is very scientific, but is written in present tense, and this really put me into the beat of the story. Characters are vivid and have depth, something most techno-thrillers lack. The relationship between Daniel and his chief scientist, Tanya, is very entertaining and realistic.

The story line is heavily based on research and speculation, and moves very fast at times, but again this adds to the present tense realism that drew me into the story. I look forward to Book 2 in the series, and after the ending in this one, I can't wait to see the next one.

Freedom to laugh (or at least relax) in Christ

This book is best understood if you read the first book of the series "Speaker aged ... (thirty something and three quarters)" first. The people who love these books the most are those who have had to face the VERY HARD struggles of life and have not given up on their faith in God (the Father of Jesus Christ). Adrian helps us laugh at the "silly" things that Christians and churches and denominations etc do. However he doesn't go too far. His writing helps you realise that God is nice (kind) and really does love you. Non believers often enjoyed these books too. My teenage children loved them all, especially about Leonard. They are the books I give away most after Amy Carmichael's "If", and Oswald Chamber's "MUFHH".

"Snakehead" by Ann Halam - a fantastic new take on the Perseus legend, set in an ancient Mediterranean of timelessly real seafront cafes and tavernas. Perseus and his mother are refugees from mainland Greece, living on a small island and working in a restaurant. Then Perseus meets and falls in love with beautiful, god-touched Andromeda fleeing her sacrificial destiny. Soon they're off to find the Gorgon's head together.
In spite of the playful way Ann Halam tosses all kind of ingredients into the mix - Zeus, Perseus' divine bully of a father, arrives in a sort of visionary millionnaire's yacht, and one of Perseus' friends is actually from Peru, having drifted across the Atlantic on a balsa raft, but no one believes him even though he introduces the 'opotato' to the island's menus - this is a serious treatment of the myth. It's just stunningly original, and I loved it.

Three Decades In Alaska Tells Me These Stories Are True!
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2005-06-14
After twenty-nine years in this great land sometimes called the Last Frontier, I can tell you that the essays in Travelers' Tales: Alaska ring true. I, personally, flew with several of the colorful glacier pilots out of Talkeetna to climb in the Alaska Range including Doug Geeting, Cliff and Jay Hudson, and Lowell Thomas, Jr., and I especially enjoyed Jon Krakauer's The Flyboys of Talkeetna. In the Introduction to this collection and in his piece, Shot Tower, Dave Roberts, East Coast writer and mountaineer, reflects on his early years of Alaskan expeditions and he critically examines his relationship to climbing. If you like mountains, you will like these tales.

This collection takes you on an Alaskan odyssey. The stories range from sea-kayaking up against monster glaciers in Glacier Bay (Tim Cahill's The Great White Philharmonic) to flying into a remote Forest Service cabin on the Kenai with your 19-day old infant, four-year old son, and grown husband to do a little grayling fishing (Andromeda Romano-Lax's Seeking Paradise) to helping Inupiat hunters haul in a whale killed in traditional fashion and divide the meat among community members (Heather Villars' On the Pack Ice). In Bill Sherwonit's Hairy Man Lives, you are treated to multiple first-hand recollections of encounters with Alaska's Sasquatch. Hairy Man is real in rural Alaska. I lived in Native villages for eight years, and I can vouch for this.

In all my years here, I have learned that Alaska is a state like no other for direct experience with the beauty, mystery, and raw power of Nature. After reading this book, you will want to travel here to see for yourself. Or, if you have been here for a while, as I have, you will be reminded of why you came in the first place.

Good for the Astronmy Library

In A to Z encyclopedia format, has a great cross-reference system which highlights a word or term if it is described elsewhere in the book. Most definitions are a little too brief for me, but what I love most about this book is its listing of the brightest stars in a constellation along with their distances which is wonderful for me since my kids are always asking how far away certain stars are and it's good to have one place to go to answer quickly. Has a very small center section with color photos -- somewhat unnecessary and probably raises the price of the book too. A great source for an amateur astronomer like me, but if you are looking for a good "first" astronomy book -- go with Dickenson's "NIGHTWATCH" and buy this one a bit later.

Read it. This a riveting eye witness account of life in eastern Germany during Hitler's rise, World War II and the post war Communist years. It is a valuable historical memoir of these times as well as the early years of Silicon Valley. But it is much more. The author was captured twice, tortured, "tried" and imprisoned for over two years for nothing more than trying to escape the oppression of an insane government. A fascinating mix of risk-taking free thinker and meticulously trained optical and mechanical engineer, the author fought his way to the United States and pursued his fortune in start-up electronics ventures. Whether or not you agree with everything he has to say, this is a brilliant man with a direct and fast-moving writing style. You will not be able to put it down.

This book is a huge disappointment. It's not woth $10.00. I found better at the books a million discount section. Anyone that would pay $298.00 for this book is not right in the head. Approx 270 pages of 3rd grade text book material.

I had the second edition of this book, published in 2001. There are so far 3 editions, First edition 1984; second edition 2001; third edition 2006. This review is under the second edition. The latest edition was published by Oxford University, in the end of 2006. The price is much lower than this second edition. I am not sure why amazon.com lists the expensive second edition first, not the latest third edition.

I checked the 3rd editon, and it seems to me there are lots of update. Almost all the chapter titles have been changed ..

I bought the second edition for my kids from Borders under 10 bucks in the bargain section. My kids like it very much.

The best book about mammals....

If you cann't find a good bargain, buy the latest edition published by Oxford University Press, not this 3-volume second edition. It's way over priced..

A wonderful resource

I have an older edition of this book, just found this 2001 edition (new) at a book sale at Barnes & Noble for only $20.00! As a Docent at a local wildlife facility, this is an excellent resource book, as well as good reading material. Super illustrations, with easy-to-understand text makes this a "must-have" for anyone interested in the Mammal world.

Both high school and public library reference holdings strong in animal science will find the second updated edition of the three-volume set The Encyclopedia of Mammals to be an excellent survey of the latest developments in mammal science. A team of editors have produced volumes which lend to both serious study and leisure browsing with a blend of color photos and drawings and articles newly revised to reflect the latest research and trends. From maps demonstrating species distribution patterns to articles that survey conservation issues and mammal natural history, the set seeks to clarify scientific terms and perspectives and will prove a delightful resource for any student of natural history.
