Great Science Thriller!Review Date: 2008-08-30
Wow, I was totally immersed and enthralled in this story. Author does an excellent job of explaining complex scientific theories like string theory and relativity and intertwines a spiritual symbolism that is very reminiscent of the late Carl Sagan. Some of the dialogue is very scientific, but is written in present tense, and this really put me into the beat of the story. Characters are vivid and have depth, something most techno-thrillers lack. The relationship between Daniel and his chief scientist, Tanya, is very entertaining and realistic.
The story line is heavily based on research and speculation, and moves very fast at times, but again this adds to the present tense realism that drew me into the story. I look forward to Book 2 in the series, and after the ending in this one, I can't wait to see the next one.

Brilliant fantasyReview Date: 2008-01-15
"Snakehead" by Ann Halam - a fantastic new take on the Perseus legend, set in an ancient Mediterranean of timelessly real seafront cafes and tavernas. Perseus and his mother are refugees from mainland Greece, living on a small island and working in a restaurant. Then Perseus meets and falls in love with beautiful, god-touched Andromeda fleeing her sacrificial destiny. Soon they're off to find the Gorgon's head together.
In spite of the playful way Ann Halam tosses all kind of ingredients into the mix - Zeus, Perseus' divine bully of a father, arrives in a sort of visionary millionnaire's yacht, and one of Perseus' friends is actually from Peru, having drifted across the Atlantic on a balsa raft, but no one believes him even though he introduces the 'opotato' to the island's menus - this is a serious treatment of the myth. It's just stunningly original, and I loved it.

Three Decades In Alaska Tells Me These Stories Are True!Review Date: 2005-06-14
This collection takes you on an Alaskan odyssey. The stories range from sea-kayaking up against monster glaciers in Glacier Bay (Tim Cahill's The Great White Philharmonic) to flying into a remote Forest Service cabin on the Kenai with your 19-day old infant, four-year old son, and grown husband to do a little grayling fishing (Andromeda Romano-Lax's Seeking Paradise) to helping Inupiat hunters haul in a whale killed in traditional fashion and divide the meat among community members (Heather Villars' On the Pack Ice). In Bill Sherwonit's Hairy Man Lives, you are treated to multiple first-hand recollections of encounters with Alaska's Sasquatch. Hairy Man is real in rural Alaska. I lived in Native villages for eight years, and I can vouch for this.
In all my years here, I have learned that Alaska is a state like no other for direct experience with the beauty, mystery, and raw power of Nature. After reading this book, you will want to travel here to see for yourself. Or, if you have been here for a while, as I have, you will be reminded of why you came in the first place.

Best Reference Book On Mammals Review Date: 2008-01-14
I checked the 3rd editon, and it seems to me there are lots of update. Almost all the chapter titles have been changed ..
I bought the second edition for my kids from Borders under 10 bucks in the bargain section. My kids like it very much.
The best book about mammals....
If you cann't find a good bargain, buy the latest edition published by Oxford University Press, not this 3-volume second edition. It's way over priced..
