I had the second edition of this book, published in 2001. There are so far 3 editions, First edition 1984; second edition 2001; third edition 2006. This review is under the second edition. The latest edition was published by Oxford University, in the end of 2006. The price is much lower than this second edition. I am not sure why amazon.com lists the expensive second edition first, not the latest third edition.

I checked the 3rd editon, and it seems to me there are lots of update. Almost all the chapter titles have been changed ..

I bought the second edition for my kids from Borders under 10 bucks in the bargain section. My kids like it very much.

The best book about mammals....

If you cann't find a good bargain, buy the latest edition published by Oxford University Press, not this 3-volume second edition. It's way over priced..

A wonderful resource

I have an older edition of this book, just found this 2001 edition (new) at a book sale at Barnes & Noble for only $20.00! As a Docent at a local wildlife facility, this is an excellent resource book, as well as good reading material. Super illustrations, with easy-to-understand text makes this a "must-have" for anyone interested in the Mammal world.

An excellent survey of the latest developments in mammal science

Both high school and public library reference holdings strong in animal science will find the second updated edition of the three-volume set The Encyclopedia of Mammals to be an excellent survey of the latest developments in mammal science. A team of editors have produced volumes which lend to both serious study and leisure browsing with a blend of color photos and drawings and articles newly revised to reflect the latest research and trends. From maps demonstrating species distribution patterns to articles that survey conservation issues and mammal natural history, the set seeks to clarify scientific terms and perspectives and will prove a delightful resource for any student of natural history.

"The Encyclopedia Of Mammals" is a wonderful book. BN offered a one-volume edition with over 930 pages until sometime in 2003 for under $50. The book covers all the mammals in the world in full color with comprehensive text and weighs about 12 lbs. The current offering is a 3-volume edition by Facts On File Natural Science Library at about $300.

I see this has been revised and is now entitled "Cultural Atlas of Ancient Egypt" which makes sense because it is really is focused on how the culture of Egypt is a reflection of the geography and natural environment and how humans learned to adapt it to them. This was one of the books we used in a course I had back at Columbia University and I've kept using it ever since. The maps are wonderful, the insets about the society are great, and the pictures both drawn and photographs of surviving artifacts are very useful. I plan on using the updated version of this for my own class on Egyptian history.

Having visited Egypt during January, 1998 and travelled through Cairo, Alexandria, El Elamein, Hurghadah to Luxor, Aswan and Abu Simbal I have found the book very interesting. Contains excellent photographs, text and explainations.

A great book for anybody proposing a trip to Egypt or having been to Egypt to re-inforce where they have been and what they have seen.

Highly recommended.

An essential addition to your library on ancient Egypt.

Research on my first novel--COME KILL THE PHARAOH, published in Germany as DER GELIEBTE DER NEFROTETE and in France under the title L'AAMANT DE NEFERTITI--depended heavily on this excellent atlas. It saved me hundreds of hours of additional research, and brought into focus the geographical history of ancient Egypt. See Amazon in Germany for review.

The first part of the book introduces a comprehensive, condensed yet accurate summary of Ancient Egyptian history. The second part presents archaeological details and plans of the main cities of Upper and Lower Egypt, as well as Nubia. The last part offers a description of Ancient Egyptian society, with its scribes, its army, its religion, and its gods. The authors have also included a list of kings and pharaohs. Readers will see how the pyramids were hypothetically built through reconstructions and diagrams. Excellent maps, a glossary and a bibliography are to be found at the end of this wonderfully illustrated book. Highly recommended, it makes a good reference for all.

This is such a helpful book, I'm almost sorry it was written! This is *the* definitive guide to renting public cabins in southcentral Alaska. As an Alaskan who appreciates the availability of inexpensive cabins -- especially when B&Bs and hotels are $... nightly -- I must say I hope too many travelers don't catch on. Excellent and informative.

An indispensable, practical guidebook reference.

Andromeda Romano-Lax's How To Rent A Public Cabin In Southcentral Alaska is recommended for the rugged wilderness traveler: it tells hikers, kayakers, anglers and more how to locate and rent such cabins for very little money. While often bare-bones and lacking amenities, these cabins provide shelter and portals to the wilderness.

Perfect guide to the "Alaskan's secret"

Few people who live outside of Alaska know about Alaska's wonderful public use cabins available for rent. This book explains how to enjoy some of the best Alaska has to offer (very inexpensively, by the way). A great resource for vacationing in Alaska.

Cassie couldn't believe her date could get much worse. She was so far out to sea, land was no longer visible and her date Mark wasn't doing much to gain favor in her eyes. Cassie's only wish was to go home, but instead the day got far worse than anyone could have expected. A freak storm rolls in and kills the control panel and looks like it's even managed to stop time. What is going on?? Not wanting to be left alone Cassie follows the diving group into the water only to see what looks like a merman? But mermen don't exist right? Atlantis was just a story right??? What's a girl to do when suddenly everything she thought was true gets washed away all with the flip of one stunningly handsome merman's tail?? Why hold her breath and hang on for the ride!

Raen couldn't believe his eyes when he sees the invaders entering the city. His home, once beautiful, is now in ruins. The intruders will only cause more problems. Raen's first instinct is to protect his home until he is distracted by one of the enemies struggling for air. Giving Cassie a life saving breath Raen doesn't realize in that instant things will never be the same for him. Now he finds that he is falling in love with one of the beings that he's always considered an enemy and at the same time struggling with the desire to do all he can to restore Atlantis to it's former glory.

Lords of the Sea captured my attention from the start and held on to it. Ms. O'Connor does a wonderful job bringing to life a story we are all familiar with but giving it a steamy, erotic twist with just enough action to keep me wondering what will happen next. I found myself hoping that Cassie and Raen would be able to overcome all the barriers that were in their way so that they could be together. When the two did get together??? Oy! Talk about hot stuff. The sensuality and sexiness of this couple had me slack jawed at moments. Theirs was not an easily developed relationship but reading it grow I couldn't help but wonder how It would all work out. Of course I'm not telling, but it's well worth the read!

As with all of Ms. O'Connor's books, Lords of the Sea is one to read if you enjoy futuristic stories with hot sex and action. I look forward to reading whatever Ms. O'Connor pens next!

This dictionary covers nearly every type of dinosaur and many dinosaur relatives alphabetically. It gives the pronounciation and often the meaning of the name and a paragraph of interesting informationabout the animal. Every dinosaur has an outline that compares its size to a human, and every animal is illustrated, though a few have only a skull shown. There is an introduction about telling dinosaurs from other reptiles and a glossary at the end. My kindergartener loves to listen to me read it, probably a second or third grader would be able read it alone.

If while reading this book you do not laugh out loud, you are missing a sense of humour. This is a series of letters from a friend of the Plass family who has broken her femur and writes with the fervor, passion and spelling of an eight year old. Plass collected her letters and some of the responses she received and published them in this hilarious collection.

Andromeda has written to the Plass's and some of their friends but she also writes to famous people: Mister Gorgeouschops, her MP, Pope John Paul, Cliff Richard ad many more. The humour and wit surrounding this girl as she recovers from her injury will make you laugh and look at any future convalescence you have with very different eyes.

This little book is picked up in my extended family time and time again, and never fails to bring a laugh and smile.

A witty, refreshing book. Non-stop entertainment.

This book is witty and funny, Meet Andromeda and all the people she writes to, hoping to get a reply, while she is stuck in a drab hospital with nothing to do. This book will make you laugh non-stop but while you will not want to put it down, you will be dissapointed when this refreshingly witty book ends!

This is a great abc book for learning to write letters. Each letter is indented, so that a child can trace it with his or her finger. It also shows an item that starts with that letter. My only complaint is that it is for learning to write lowercase letters. I wish that there was also an uppercase version. But overall, very neat book!

I'm a teacher, and this gives kids a tactile experience about lower case letters. Not only does my baby enjoy touching the book while I read it to him, but I cannot resist feeling the letters myself!

My daughter was expected to start writing in lower case letters from the get-go in kindergarten, so this is a fun way to introduce them. There are plenty of puzzles, toys and games that already teach upper case letters, so I was excited to find something fun with lower case letters. This is a great find!

It was really enlightning for me to learn that as a Christian (Catholic) I was taught many principles that Confucio already stated years before. Though since a long time ago I do not follow any religion at all, some simple principles Confucio wrote are part of my personal peaceful approach to life.

Undoubtedly, the best book by Ivan Yefremov. Defined as utopia by genre, the book captures the reader with its pure complexity of almost impossible world, but can be a "different" reading material to those unfamiliar with censoring in Soviet Union. It is truly a wonder how the book passed into publication, instantly becoming a bestseller. The secret to its wild success is simple: it portrays, with an amazing precision, what communism and socialism are not, then building its reader for reaching up to the new heights, inspiring and calling with a stretched hand... One can almost forget it is a utopia. His well-developed characters and futuristic setting make it impossible to stop reading, and leave reader satisfied and content. It is a happy book with yet a complex net of problems and conflicts that humanity and its individual members must face in order to reshape their future into what it is believed to be - bright.
I must have re-read it a hundred times - it has the power to take you away. Enjoy it with a light heart, and let the book do the rest!
