First of all, this book just looks fun! It is shaped, has many bright colors, and it SPARKLES!! This is a book that you will not mind reading several times. It also has a great message. It begins with, "The colors in this basket are my own special way for me to tell the story of that first Easter Day." Kids will hear the TRUE story of Easter in a fun, colorful way. By using the many colors commonly found in Easter baskets, the author takes us through the entire Easter story. From the green palm leaves, to the purple wine, to the red blood, to the brown cave, to the white angel, to the yellow sun. Each section is presented in rhyming format. "The purple in my basket reminds me of the time that Jesus shared with his friends a meal of bread and wine." In addition, the children depicted in this book are very diverse, which is an added bonus. This book shows asian, black, white, and biracial children, all experiencing the love of Jesus. A unique and welcome accomplishment.

If I had encountered this book when my daughter was young, she would have owned it. The structure is a basket containing a white rabbit, chocolate rabbit, a chick, flowers and Easter eggs. These items are depressed, so as the thick pages are turned, the items are "removed" from the basket. The pages are very colorful and the "basket" items sparkle, features that will capture and keep the attention of young children. The text, which appears in captions at the bottom, explains the religious significance of Easter.

Nice way to combine modern Easter traditions and the real Easter story. The pictures on the Amazon site don't really show the glitter on the book well. The colors are really vibrant, and the glitter sparkles on every page.

I have purchased this book for both my son and my daughter and love it! The page layout covers the whole first year of baby's life. You have pages for each month. There was room to put every detail in from doctor's visits to holidays. I was able to put baby hospital bracelets, first haircuts, you name it and there was a space for it. What a great book for keeping up with all of baby's remarkable firsts! I recommend this one whether you like the Babar theme or not!

Excellent - My choice after browsing thru MANY books

I must have flipped through 15+ baby books and this is the one I took home. It's very cute and there is room to fill in extra details if you want. I love the flow of the book and the pictures it asks for. I would have LOVED it if my mother had filled out a book just like this one for me. I'm enjoying filling it out for our April '08 arrival.

I love this book, even in spite of the fact I could care less about Babar. I sat in several bookstores, piled up every baby book they had, and went through them all (probably 15 in all), and liked this one the best. Here's why:

There is lots of room for writing whole paragraphs (and in some cases, pages) about your baby, not just fill in the blanks. Although in a few places, there are sentances like this: My mother's "height is _______, her eye color is ________, and her hair color is ________" those are in the minority. Usually a blank paragraph is headed by something like: "When my mother first saw me, she." Sometimes there is a whole blank page to answer a question. This is a book for people who like to write.

There are lots and lots of places for pictures. I do imagine that by the time I'm finished with this book, I will wish it had a spiral binding.

Some areas that are special or unique are the info about the parents (and their courtship and marriage), the grandparents, and the siblings. I also like the area for baby pictures of each parent. There are also places for both the mother and the father to fill in: "memories of my birth and first few days" and "hopes and wishes for me." Then they also seem to have covered all the usual stuff like places for ultrasound photos, a picture of the nursery, baby shower info, milestones, first words, and all that you might expect. By far, this was the most thorough book I saw.

Finally, the book does not assume your family is Christian; there is a section on the baby's first holiday. There is also a section for adoption.

So, I do wish this book was simplely styled (i.e. no Babar), but it isn't really too cutesy (and I hate cutesy), and the sections are so complete that I couldn't choose another book. Hope that helps you!

Lovely Images of Easter and Spring!
Helpful Votes: 7 out of 7 total.
Review Date: 2007-04-18
This is a sturdy, durable board book that contains simple yet lovely illustrations of seasonal novelties such as baby animals born in Spring, Easter lilies and bonnets, the Easter Bunny bringing baskets, and the whole family coloring eggs together and participating in an Easter egg hunt on the farm. It takes a quiet, simple, secular approach to presenting Easter and Spring concepts, and, therefore, it is perfectly appropriate for any young child. The emphasis of this book is more on illustration than on text or storyline which is fine because it elicits conversation and the opportunity to teach an infant/toddler about the images depicted. My son just had his second Easter and he still enjoys the illustrations -- specifically finding and pointing out all the eggs and bunnies throughout the book. The only complaint I have is that I wish this book was longer! It positively oozes old-fashioned charm and is sure to please both children and parents alike.

I've been reading this book to my daugther since she was born and at one year old it's still her favorite. She loves the bright, happy pictures of animals that are not overly simple but not too complex. Nice collection of Mother Goose rhymes that are short enough that she doesn't get bored and fun to read.

The illustrations in this book are gorgeous! It is so difficult to find children's books with really beautiful pictures, but this is one of the loveliest I have seen. The colorful pictures to the classic Mother Goose rhymes captivate my one year old daughter. The pictures are so colorful and detailed that there is quite a bit for a child to look at. Cute little bunnies, squirrels, cats and other wildlife bring the old rhymes to life.

I am very glad that this is a sturdy board book because it is read over and over and still looks as good as new! The handle makes it easy for my daughter to carry around. This book is a must for any small child! You won't be sorry.

My two year old has loved this board book since she got it! We read it 10 times every day. It is especially cute with the clasp and handle which, by the way, I was worried those would break and fall off from too much abuse. Happy to say the entire book is still in tact after months of use! My daughter loves to carry it around by the handle.

I agree with the previous reviews that the age range on this is a misleading. This book can be enjoyed as early as you would like to introduce it to your baby or child. It is never to early to start reading to your child! The board book format makes it safe for all ages and both babies and children can appreciate the very high quality photos (with a few illustrations thrown in). For such a small book it contains an amazing amount of information!

I love this bilingual series of books and I hope that DK publishing keeps bringing out more titles. I think, however, that the age range is a bit wrong. I think that this book can be enjoyed as early as 2 years of age, when a child is learning the objects around them. Be sure and check out "My First Spanish Word Board Book" and "My First Spanish Farm Board Book."

I originally bought this book for my oldest daughter, whom loved it and we read it over and over. It has now been handed down to my youngest child and she is obsessed with it! It has been read so much that we have had to tape and glue it back together 3 times! The tune is a catchy favorite that both of my children run around singing over and over again.

Great Little First Board Book

Review Date: 2008-01-17
I love this book! It is currently one of my one-year-old's favorites. She has me read it OVER and OVER, and it's so cute and sweet that I barely mind it. We actually bought it for my first daugther because we wanted more "love" books that weren't specifically "Mommy" books that Daddy could read her too. The illustrations are beautiful...in the style of art made from construction paper. But what I really love is the flow of the words. For an early reader it's perfect. As it counts to 10 with animals and great descriptive words, it starts out with two number per page flip, because just a few animals don't take up as much room. But as it gets to the bigger numbers, it goes to two pages (one spread) per number. It's perfect because as attention span wanes toward the end of the book for an early reader, the pages turn faster and keep her attention. And of course the love message is just precious. I highly recommend this book to anyone for buying for yourself or as a gift. It's a great little size for small hands too... easy to hold, and not too heavy. My 5 year old still likes it too, because of the loving message, and now she reads it to her little sister (so sweet!)

This is along the same lines as "Guess How Much I Love You". However, it not only gives you a way to express the depth of your love but gives children a chance to count the numbers one to 10. I've already got a lot of counting books but I'll probably add this one to our library. It's sweet without being too sappy.

My 2 year son loves this book. Every night we read it twice when he gets in bed. He even insists on sleeping with it. I can hear him laying there looking at the colorful pictures reading it to himself. The most wonderful part is the ending - after listing ten animals it ends with [my love for you is...] "greater than all of these together forever". A wonderfully sweet book.

Both of my children LOVED this book at about 9-10 months. They especially liked the naught puppy and the happy puppies. I would shake my finger at the naught one and they quickly learned to do the same. I would make a panting sound for the happy puppies and again, my children quickly learned to imitate the sound. My 10 month old son would actually go get the book, open it up, and start panting. When we lost the book, I had to get another one. Now, my 3.5 year old daughter reads it to her 11 month old brother!

I hate being the curmudgeon here, but this book got one picture wrong. But let's talk about what's right first. You get six two-page spreads here, on the right, an ABSOLUTELY ADORABLE picure of a puppy (or puppies), and on the left, against a vibrantly colored background, a big black word that describes the emotion shown by the dog. So, you "happy" facing a page of 3 smiling (OK< one of them hasn't quite opened its mouth yet) terriers, the word "naughty" paired with a dog biting a shoe tongue, his or her paws tightly around the heel, and "sleepy" describing what might be a Golden Retriever showing a big tongue-revealing yawn! Now, there's also the word "snuggly" showing two young Labs (?) cuddling, only--one of the labs looks worried! THe other one looks extremely content and is indeed snuggling, but the other pooch is looking off in the distance, as if some food (or another dog!!!) is a distraction. YOur infant won't notice this, of course, but there's a great picture of engaged in mutual snuggling on the back cover--this is the one that should have been used.

The one exception to the format described above is the last 2-page spread, and it's another winner. With the word "family" above them, we see the only photo taking up the entire two pages: It's a mom and dad Spaniel with 9 (nine!) CUTE little Spaniel. This is a fun, sturdy board book for the baby who loves dogs, with all photos by Jane Burton, and published by Simon and Schuster.

I though this book was going to end up with all the other books that my daughters looked at once then tossed under their beds. However, my 5 year old still looks at it when my 2 year old is "reading" it. They love this book. The pictures are basic and help with building vocabulary. The "shimmery" part is what my daughters really like. Our book is pretty worn, but it is one of their favorites!

This book is perfect for 1 or 2 year old children. It catches their attention with bold artwork mixed with shiny, glittery panels sprinkled throughout. The illustrator wisely chose to use the shiny panels sparingly, so that they are enough to attract the child, but they do not overwhelm the page. It quickly became our one-year old's favorite book, and one of the first words he spoke was "star," which he learned from the "shapes" page. Each page has a different topic, "Colors," "Shapes," "Opposites," "Getting Dressed," . . . The book uses single words and pictures to teach basic concepts. It is one of the few board books we have seen that has large pages, about the dimensions of a magazine. We received it as a gift, and I think it would make a great gift. It is unusual and eye-catching, without being gaudy. Your child will love it.

Our 3 month old daughter can spend 10-15 minutes on my lap looking at this book with me; she coos, smiles and stares about the page with wonder as I point out the different shapes and objects. People do say that she has a great attention span for such a young baby, but I think any several month old would take to this book. This is a must have. It teaches shapes, colors, location, size, opposites and clothing.
