I have never heard of this book before I checked it out at my daughters school libray. It is a good book to read before bedtime.

My mom got this book for me for a school report and it is easy for me to read and understand. I like her to read it before I go to sleep at night. I would tell my friends about this book because it is a good book and it is about animals. I really like the end when the grandma owl comes out to tell a short story about the animals and then she says "sweet dreams".

as a closing this was an interesting and fun book to read and I even purchased 5 other books similar to this one for my girls i know they will enjoy, thank you...

I have been reading this book before bedtime to my son since he was born and he is now 9 months old. It's such a cute story and it holds his attention. I loved it so much, I just purchased it as a shower gift for my friend.

I had not heard of nor seen this book until my 18-month-old son found it in the library -- and now he wants to bring it home every time -- and we have to read it every night. (So it's on his Santa list this Christmas.)

It's hard to describe his reaction to this story, but when we read it, I can feel his entire body relax. (And yes, he likes the goo, glup sounds of the toadlets the best.) I read with different voices for the tiny animals, and a sing-song voice for the Wise Grandma Owl.

It's important to mention, too, that I like the simplicity, repetition, and calming tone of this book. And I love to read it to my son. Which is important when purchasing children's books...you'll be reading them a thousand times!

Gets you from the very start!!

My three year-old daughter happened upon this book at the library the other day and we fell in love with it the first time we read it. She absolutely loved the illustrations of the little furry animals. But even more, she loved the language that the author used for the different animals. The baby toadlets were her favorite in the ubp, glup mud.

As a parent and teacher, is a great book for getting a younger child to follow a pattern. On each page "deep down in the woods at sleepytime" is used to start and then the pictures allow for further hints to the words that follow.

This is a page turner for my daughter and I love the rhythm that is created by the words. The language is soothing and gets my daughter ready for bed in an instant. This will be a book that we will definitely add to her library in the near future!

This is an excellant sourcebook for Krynn provided you have all the other books that it refers to. This book makes frequent references to AD&D sourcebooks (most notably the Player's Handbook [2nd ed.]and the Unearthed Arcana). As I don't have either of these books, most the rules asides made little sense. However, as a detailed work on the background, setting, and characters found not only in the Dragonlance game, but also the novels, this book excells.

The Dragonlance setting is strongly based on the classic Good vs. Evil. The book is excellent, as it covers the history of Krynn since its creation to the war that nearly destroyed it. Complete description of deities, NPCs, new races and classes that are very fun to play. Also included are some cards I never figured out, but I have fun anyway. This world promises the most epic campaigns if you are to really role-play, not just hack ns slash. I strongly recommend it. If you are going to buy it, acquire also the novels from this setting. They should really add to your campaign.

The best adventure book for AD&D ever!

Dragonlance Adventures (DLA), by Tracy Hickman and Margaret Weis, is "the AD&D game source book for continuing adventures in the world of Krynn." It was published in hardcover in 1987 (later followed by Darksword Adventures, Greyhawk Adventures, Forgotten Realms Adventures, and others) and has not been revised or reprinted since. While it does have its own errors (the timeline, in particular, is considered erroneous), many fans feel it captured the essence and flavor of Dragonlance. DLA is a great resource, so if you find a copy, snatch it up quickly.

Margaret Weis writes: "DL Adventures expressed the DL team's vision of the world, a vision we want to try to recreate with our work at Sovereign Press. I will state here, without apology, that DL Adventures will be taken as the foundation for all things Dragonlance with certain exceptions where applicable (such as the flawed time line)."

DLA provides an overview of the world of Krynn and its history, with a focus on how to run an AD&D campaign in Ansalon set after the War of the Lance. These are some of the main sections in DLA:

"Lot in Life" -- Classes specific to Dragonlance: Knights of Solamnia, Tinkers, Wizards of High Sorcery, and Holy Orders of the Stars (includes information on the 21 gods);

"The Races of Krynn" -- Information on the Krynn-specific PC races and subraces: Kender, Gnomes, Elves, Dwarves (and Gully Dwarves), Irda, and Minotaurs.

"Creatures of Krynn" -- Monsters unique to Dragonlance, including Draconians and Krynn Dragons.

"The World that Was" -- Information on Krynn Pre-Cataclius, including a Map of Ansalon, a timeline, NPCs, and ancient magical items: Dragonlance, Device of Time Journeying, Staff of Magius, Hammer of Kharas, Bloodstone of Fistandantilus, Orb of Dragonkind, etc.

"War of the Lance" -- Information on Krynn Alt-Cataclius, including a Map of Ansalon, a timeline, political conditions, climate, NPCs and PCs of the Legends Trilogy (post-War of the Lance).

the battery is now dead, because my sons have played with the book SO MUCH. AND........ you cannot replace the batteries......WHAT??! I couldn't believe it when I found that out. It says right on the back of the book, "Batteries cannot be replaced." Ugggh. The boys were SO bummed! They still play with it though, making their own sounds and of course, we still read it together and they can still turn the steering wheel and pretend. I guess it actually still makes some sort of noise when you press the horn...sounds like something crashing or something. At least it's not moaning anymore like it was when the battery first started to die! LOL!
Anyway, it lasted around 8 months with a 3 yr. old and an 18 month old playing with it (their ages now).
Just thought you should know about the battery thing. Still a really cool book though.

My son received this book for Christmas and I just cannot thank that person enough for it. He just loves this book! The horn the steering wheel has is just so neat and I hear that thing going at the strangest times too (like at 3:00 a.m. when he rolls over on it in bed...). It has gone many, many places and my son just cannot get enough of it. It has all the brands too - Deere, Farmall, harvester, etc. and explains how the tractors work the fields and take the products to market. Great, great book - don't hesitate on this one!

This book is a treasure trove of historical information on the entire McIntosh County area. If you live in/visit occasionally/or are interested in McIntosh county Georgia this book is a MUST HAVE.

Although to the passerby McIntosh County seems like a small rural coastal county in southern georgia, with not much to see yet (but about to develop) IT IS NOT -- McIntosh County may be one of the most historical counties in the entire south, "There's been a lot of water under that bridge." And this book will reveal all of it to a good detail!

Buddy seems to get "into" the people he writes about... he gives them substance, and dimension. He brings you into each generation he writes about. You almost feel the wind on your face, and the sea at your feet, with his discriptions. He goes beyond name, date, and place. He brings you to a point where you feel you are living the times. He not only goes into detail about a person, he goes beyond that person, to someone who was touched by that person, and recounts it. Therefore, we learn about them from two points of view. We learn what he finds by exploring a "paper trail", and we learn about what he finds from the things that have been passed down. I will tell you... I have never been as impressed about a book written about a town or place, or people, the way his book impressed me. His book made me want to go out and "explore"... and I did! I have learned more about the "out of the way places" here, in McIntosh Co GA,in his book, than anywhere else. His books are also extremely helpful where Genealogy in being researched. Buddy's books seem to make you feel like he is an "I want to know because..." type of person. And they don't leave you "hanging." He is very through.

When I went to introduce my preschooler to Winnie-the-Pooh, I bought the big book with the complete stories and poems. It didn't take long for me to figure out that it wasn't quite right for my 3-year-old. Reading a story out of the original works takes a good 15-20 minutes, which is more than one can really expect from a preschooler or toddler. Also, the original Pooh is a bit like Sesame Street, in that there are phrases and indeed entire sections of the stories that adults will find amusing but which will just go over a child's head.

And yet, I didn't want to break down and go the route of the Disney-fied Pooh books, with their cartoonish illustrations and watered-down plots and characters.

That's why I was so pleased to find the Easy-to-Read series. There are six easy-to-read titles from two publishers. They are:

Winnie-the-Pooh and Some Bees
Pooh Goes Visiting
Eeyore Has a Birthday
Tigger Comes to the Forest
Christopher Robin Leads an Expedition
Pooh Invents a New Game

Each book is based on one chapter from the complete works. These little books are divided into four chapters, although it should be no problem to read one from start to finish in one sitting.

The print is large and well spaced, and there are ample illustrations (the original drawings by E.H. Shepard) on every page spread to keep little eyes engaged in the story. Most important, the editor has removed most of the passages that aren't so kid friendly and has simplified the stories without giving them a Disney style candy coating. One could read the original story and then the easy-to-read version and get the same basic plot; when going from the Milne works to the Disney versions, the same is certainly not true.

I didn't give these books five stars because the editor retained some language and dialogue that may be a bit confusing for children in the intended age range. Nevertheless, these books are a wonderful introduction to a classic cast of characters for the preschool set.

When all the characters in the imaginary world of Winnie the Pooh go on their day to day mischiefs, forgetting a friends special day, it makes one see how cartoon characters really portray real life situations. The full page of colors allows one to sit back and get the satisfaction of a children's book. Yet this book not only addresses a child's awareness nor is it an entertainment instrument but as well as a joyful piece of literature for any age group to admire

This little book is an exact reproduction of a chapter 6 in the original book, Winnie-the-Pooh by A.A. Milne, with the original illustrations by Shephard enhanced by judicious watercoloring. All the charm of the original, in a perfect size for reading to littler kids, who can feel satisfied at having been read "the whole story." Also good for children just starting to read all by themselves.

Beautifully bound and illustrated, this little book is part of a series of 10 such Pooh books published by Dutton. Don't confuse these 10 "storybooks" with the even smaller and abridged board-books for infant/toddlers.

Emma's Pet is a very cute story about Emma's search for a big, soft, cuddly pet. In her search she tries all sorts of animals. First she finds a bug, but it isn't cuddly. Then in order she finds a mouse, bird, frog, snake, fish, dog, and turtle. Each one has some problem, some reason why it won't make the perfect pet. The mouse is too small; the bird is too busy, etc. So Emma gets sad. Then she suddenly sees `the biggest, softest, cuddliest thing she had ever seen. (turn page) It was her father.' She then asks him if he will be her pet, and he asks if she will be his. `And she hugged her new big soft cuddly pet. And it hugged her right back.'

This book is very sweet, and has beautiful illustrations. I really like it.

My daughter loves Emma's Pet. When I read it to her, I substitute her name for Emma's name and her cat's name for the cat character's name. At the end of the book where Emma hugs her daddy, my daughter gets up from my lap and gives me a hug. My daughter is 19 months old. Next to "Guess How Much I Love You" it is my favorite book -- and it is one of her favorites too.

The Ultimate Essential
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2008-08-15
This is an anthology of the most essential thoughts of Paul Tillich. It is divided into eight sections covering eight major themes of Tillich's career, namely, "Ultimate Concern," "Symbols," "The Protestant Principle," "Addressing the Situation," "Love, Power and Justice," "The Courage to Be," "The Future of Religions," and "Living on the Boundary." The book does not carry any extra notes or commentary by the editor, but he introduces the book with a short preface. It is a very general preface, which describes Tillich's value to the Church during his lifetime, as well as describes, in the most general terms, Tillich's approach to theology. Church, the editor, also includes a plea for another like Tillich to rise up and take his place. "I have come to recognize that, now more than ever, we need a Paul Tillich to guide us through the perils of our age" (xiii).

The most important value of this book lies in Church's selection process. He has specifically chosen a topical approach in order to more fully represent Tillich's thoughts on that topic. Tillich had the ability to tailor his speech to his audience, so in this book, Church has selected a technical writing (usually from Tillich's three volume "Systematic Theology," a sermon, and usually another selection from a book or journal article he had written on that topic. This is a most helpful layout. Tillich has never been accused of writing simply, and the ability to explore his thoughts from a sermon and a systematic layout help the reader to understand his sometimes complicated thoughts. As an example, compare these two passages from the section on The Courage to Be. "Courage is the self-affirmation of being in spite of the fact of non-being. It is the act of the individual self in taking the anxiety of nonbeing upon itself by affirming itself either as part of an embracing whole or in its individual selfhood" (168). "Simply accept the fact that you are accepted. If that happens to us we experience grace" (201). The second quote is from one his sermons and gets to the point much more clearly than the previous quote, but the value in the more technical writing is that the reader gets a much more fully developed picture of what Tillich meant and how he got to that point.

The value of Paul Tillich's theology can hardly be understated. It has affected more than will admit to it. He believed that theology's task was to engage culture and answer the questions it asks. This book clearly and logically presents Tillich's writings as a commentary on themselves. This is a valuable introduction to the one known as the "ambassador to intellectuals."

A worthy collection of Tillich
Helpful Votes: 35 out of 35 total.
Review Date: 2005-10-19
This is an interesting collection of the writings of Tillich. It breaks down Tillich into more easily digestible pieces. Tillich is not an easy read. Educated in German schools deeply influenced by liberal theology of the nineteenth century and philosophical schools reacting to the breakdown of Enlightenment thinking, Tillich sought to make theology a relevant subject in the academy. Much of his writing is primarily geared toward other academics, philosophers in particular. Many seminarians have difficulty with Tillich, both in making real-world connections as well as traversing the language -- Tillich invents his own terminology and develops his own linguistic methods of discussing theological issues.

Tillich is sometimes mistaken for being an atheist, since he makes the radical claim that God does not exist -- however, this shows the redefinitions and subtle aspects at work in Tillich's writing. Only finite things can be spoken of as 'existing'; God, not being finite, does not 'exist' in the way that any created thing exists. God becomes for Tillich the Ground of Being, that from which all existing things come and in which all in existence have their being.

Tillich was profoundly influenced by his experiences in the first world war, where he served as a chaplain in the trench warfare. Unlike theologians such as Barth, he initially had a young man's bravado and support for the war, until the grim realities set in. This experience would never leave Tillich, and he continued to strive all his life to craft a systematic theology that would on the one hand address the concerns of culture but at the same time resist traditional pitfalls of theology-of-culture that make it less universal, and too much a human construct.

Tillich's development of Christology, with Christ as the New Being, is very significant, the way for Tillich's more general philosophical theology to find a grounding in Christianity. Tillich had a long fascination with other religions, Buddhism in particular, and was charged by some critics of relegating Christianity to a secondary status. Like many of Tillich's theological ideas, there is a tension apparent in his Christological development that exists between different traditional methods of dealing with the issue historically, philosophically and theologically.

The selections here come from many of Tillich's works - 'The New Being', 'The Courage To Be', 'Dynamics of Faith', 'History of Religions', and 'Systematic Theology', among others. All of the fundamental concepts of Tillich - the ground of being, the ultimate concern, the idea of history of religions as a primary source of theology, etc. - are here in Tillich's own words, with careful arrangement and a bit of commentary by F. Forrester Church.

This is a good, one-volume introduction to Tillich for those who wish to seek deeper insights into one of the major theologians of our times. This is useful for individual study, for group and bible study groups, for beginning theology classes, and for those ministers and other seminary graduates who would like a one-volume text with which to refamiliarise themselves.

Having studied religious/philosophical discourse for decades, I was electrified intellectually and spiritually by the brilliance of existential thought in every selection in this anthology! Not for casual review or the beginning contemplative, the demand for a complex conceptual imagination, a consuming passion for Being, and plasticity of one's most cherished personal beliefs is required. This is an excellent introduction to Tillich's depth and style. Positively transforming!

Excellent Introductory Anthology

Review Date: 2007-04-05
For someone with no background or prior knowledge of Tillich or existential theology this is an excellent first step. Divided into multiple sections concerning the different aspects of Tillich's thought, with multiple excerpts from his many works to give an overview of his position. Primarily concerned with Tillich's more overtly theological thought, this volume does leave out much of his writing on the arts and politics, though likely for good reason. An overview of Tillich's opinions about socialism, though influenced by his theology and interesting for someone interested in his life, is not likely to be foremost among the interests of someone looking to read Tillich. If it is, then this book will help point you in the right direction for your next purchase.

In typical McMurtry style, there is a good deal of humor and whimsy in this novel. For the first 400 pages or so I felt it was a bit overdone, but once I saw where the novel was headed, it made perfect sense. About the ultimate destination of the novel: it packs quite an emotional punch. Rare indeed is the novel that can make me cry, but this one did it.

No writer in the last half of the 20th century was better at character development than McMurtry. In "Terms" he introduced us to Aurora Greenway; here he he expands and burnishes her character while he folds in a supporting cast of almost equally fascinating lesser characters. This was one of those rare tomes I wished would never end. You don't have to like her, but if you finish this book unaffected by la Greenway, you'd best read it again. Aurora's successful plan to ensure her young Grandson would never forget her is one of the most moving sequences I have ever read. Two years after first reading this novel and I still well up just thinking about it.

I love this book. I use this with my children and the children I work with in my day care. It really grabs their attention and they all want to move the flaps. As a parent I found it to be a wonderful tool to not only interact with my children while reading the book but to use it on a daily basis. This is a very easy book to use. Children do not all develop spoken language at the same time and this is a wonderful and easy way for your child to communicate his/her needs to you. Sign language is essentially another language, but, easy and fun to learn and use with your children, even after they are speaking.

This book has a place on the front cover where you can insert your own childs picture (over the woman holding the baby). The illustrations portray people of various nationalities/color which is fitting for the culturally diverse world in which we live. And lastly has a beautiful index in the back with all of the words used in the book and a description of each. It also has the American Manual Alphabet.

I have also purchased one as a gift for a friend who just had a baby, and she loved it.

I highly recommend this book if you are looking for a fun sign lanugage book in story book format.

This is a great book!

This book isn't just for teaching the newborn - my toddlers like learning the signs too. I really like the idea of the flaps. It is great way for my older child to learn the signs and the words as well. Plus my kids like to lift them up, it keeps them interested.

This is a wonderful book for parents to read to children of all ages. As a psychologist I know the value of parents reading to their children and this book gives them the opportunity to learn sign language together. They not only have the opportunity to read together but to share in the joy of learning and speaking together in sign. The book is interactive and allows the child to engage while flipping the inserts and discovering and learning different signs. The story and illustrations are entertaining and inviting.

I have read this book to toddlers, preschoolers and an eight year old and they all found it interesting and entertaining. As parent and child learns to sign together they share a special bond that they developed while reading the book.

I highly recommend this book for parents of not just newborns but all preschool and early school age children.

Tanya Kuza, the mother of three young sons, I began teaching ASL when my first son was born in 2002. I have a bachelor's degree in language arts and a social sciences degree in elementary education from the University of Michigan. I founded In Motion Books in October 2006 to promote early childhood communication and family bonding by teaching basic ASL signs in an entertaining storybook format. I know you will enjoy this open the flap book to read to your child while also enabling them to learn a few key ASL signs along the way. This is fun for children to explore while making the signs easy for adults to imitate and use in their everyday routines.

My 17 month old son loves, loves, loves this book! He has had it for about a year now and we read it at least once a day. The realistic photos are great, as well as educational. He loves to touch the "bumpy corn" and pet the owl's fuzzy belly.

awesome!!
