My dreams of perfect beginner book have become true!

I thought that a comprehensive book explaining all basic stuff in a lively way would be an impossible task. But Mr. Eade has really made it!

Firstly, I love the 3-D diagrams, the layout of book is more visual as in usual chess books and I must admit it really works! There are first of all all the elementary stuff, rules etc but after that you get ao overview of opening principles, not forgetting the hypermodern approach. There's a section describing openings and their general ideas, there's a section for tactics and strategy.

I'm just overwhelmed of this superb book. James Eade explains some fundamental pawn structures which are typical for specific openings - that's something most beginner books don't do. There's some nice guide for essential endgame stuff, this book is simply the best beginner book availible I think players up to 1800 can benefit most of this book.

Suitable for about a USCF 1600 rated player too!

I'm about a USCF 1600 (Class B player) and I'm improving from this book because it is suitable for me.

This is why l like this James Eade chess book.
1. This book relies on the chess diagrams, not the chess notation, so learning from this book is easier because it's less confusing. Easy to follow diagrams!
2. I love the spiral form because the book holds flat by itself on a table! It is much better than paper back and hard back form!
3. There are 3D diagrams on key positions on almost every page, so I can easily follow through learning new strategy.
4. This book covers all aspects of the game clearly, TACTICS such as the fork, deflection, pin, overloading, discovery etc, endgame such as opposition, triangulation, basic king pawn endgames, queen vs rook endgame etc. , MIDDLEGAME/ STRATEGY such as making a luft, bad bishop, good bishop, how to make use of your rooks, knights, outposts, pawn islands, pawn chains etc. OPENING it shows you different kinds of opening such as the Silican, Ruy Lopez, French Defense, Queen Pawn opening, how to play the opening such as development, timing, etc.) so I can improve my all around game!

This is why I don't like this book.
1. There are no chess excercises/problems to test your knowledge in the book. This is key to improve and I hope James Eade can add chess excercises/problems to another edition of this book if he writes another edition of this book.
2. There are no 'winning game pointers', such in the other book, The Idiot's Guide for Chess. (Patrick Pointer's) I hope James Eade can add 'winning game pointers' in an another edition if he writes one.

Overall, This book is good.
Why?
1. It has helped me gain about 100 points, (1500 to 1600) in about 4 months.

Eade excells in this book!!

"The Chess Players Bible" -James Eade

Author James Eade seems to be distancing himself from his earlier standard, "Chess For Dummies" and I'm very pleased to see him introduce another beginner's chess book. This one is better by far.

This is a different format from the majority of chess books, for a couple of different reasons. (1) It is spiral bound, so that once you fold the book open, it stays open, and will fold flat for easy study. (2) It is ILLUSTRATED throughout with clear, concise images of the chess board and piece positions, and in COLOR too!

The coverage of OPENINGS is excellent, from the Romantic Openings to the Queeen's Pawn games, etc This is really great material, in its presentation, for easy assimilation by beginners. Because of the novelty of the splendid illustrations, this book receives a special recommendation.

TACTICS: Eade gives good, basic coverage of tactics, and I believe his illustrations help clarify these for beginners.

***About the Author: James Eade***

James Eade is a very STAND UP guy, taking on the entire chess establishment in the USA with charges that the U.S. Chess Federation was being mismanaged and driven to bankruptcy (which it was at the time!). Notwithstanding, EADE was one of three individuals to bail out the USCF when, near financial ruin, USCF could not afford to send a chess team to the OLYMPIADS. EADE is a strong advocate for chess in the Olympics. By any standard, this is a STAND UP guy.

***The Price***

The price is fair, and not excessive, because AMAZON reduces the full retail to $14.95. Even the full retail price of $21.95 is not necessarily excessive, because spiral-bound books are more expensive to produce. In my opinion, most beginner books priced over $20.00, are a rip-off, but that is for 2 specific reasons. Paperbound books are not that expensive to make, so that $21.95 is a "padded" price for a plain paperback. That is not the case here. The second reason a $20.00 book is a rip-off generally, is that paperbacks that are EXCELLENT beginning instruction have been around for years, and often sell for around $9.95, so that many new books are merely endless and mindless REPETITIONS of the same teachings that have been around for over a hundred years.

However, I am recommending Eade's "Chess-Player's Bible" as a fine book, if you are waiting for the next edition. The reason you should wait is that there are some obvious PROOFREADING errors that require correction; for example, this crazy mix up on the endgame study from page 190 where White is supposed to promote the rearward pawn to a Queen:

White K at f4, white pawns at f3 & f2
Black K at f6, WHITE TO MOVE:

1.Ke4 Ke6
2.f4 Kg6??? (only if Black's K moves 2 squares at a time!?)
3.f5 Kf7
4.Ke5 Ke7
5.f6+ Kf7
6.Ke6??? (violates the Rule that says KINGS must stay one square apart. Here, the White K moves right next to Black K, an obvious ILLEGAL move!)
continuing, Black King plays 6. ...Kf8

I don't know the solution to the problem, but the 2 major errors here indicate that the proofreader did not do his work. Please do not mistake the criticism here, because the book is still worth having. Even some of the great classics of chess literature, such as REUBEN FINE's books, contain errors.

The ILLUSTRATIONS are a superb feature, far exceeding most paperbacks, and Eade may be setting a new standard. This book is highly recommended. ---Bruce R. Bain, President, Denver Chess Club

There are several things I love about this book, 1 is that the illustrator is excellent! The book is just beautiful to look at, it's a quick read and I'd love to have a stuffed dragon like hers white bandage and all!

I love the story and the excitement of Christmas day, for us parents it takes me back to my childhood and I'm sure it will do the same for you, I know it will be one of our books to read in December as well as a Christmas Eve reading along with Twas the Night Before Christmas, this book is that cute.

The last thing I love about this book is for me that I see the daughter as being adopted. I guess we all see what we choose to see and with my daughter looks exactly like the character.

My twin girls insist on reading their favorite book, "Goodnight" (by the same author and illustrator) every night, and I was thrilled to find another book with the same little girl, Max, Theo, JoJo, and the rest of the gang. Since the girl didn't have a name in "Goodnight", we named her Debbie, but now we know her name is Juliette! (so we now call her Debbie Juliette...). Anyway, these are MY two favorite books to read to my two favorite 2-year-olds, I can't get enough of the pictures, they are beautiful. I plan to buy this book for Christmas presents! Great simple story and dozens of things to look at on each page, again, the pictures are adorable, water-colorey...

Cinderella is, in my opinion, the all-time favorite classic Disney story for little girls. There's got to be a reason why there are so many grown-up books and movies referred to as "Cindarella stories!"

This is a good, short adaptation of the Disney movie version of the classic "Cinderella" story. Keeps some of the new characters that the Disney crew created, including Lucifer the cat and the mice that Cinderella protects. Touches on all the main points of the movie, and sticks pretty closely to the movie's plotline. Perfect tool for encouraging kids who like the movie to also pick up a book and read.

We have this golden book and it is one of my 3 year old daughter's favorite books to have read to her. It is the perfect length (not too long of a story, and not too condensed). The illustrations are also nice. I highly recommend this book and your princess should not be disappointed!

This unique and beautifully illustrated book is based on a real live "Aunt Julie." Meg Davenport's, Aunt Julie, saved Meg's childhood by allowing her child spirit to soar. Julie always had millions of projects going at once and her love for life and the creative spirit became contagious to her niece and nephews. This book took 3 years to design and a year to illustrate. It is a true labor of love and should be in any Pop-up collectors library of the wonders of paper and art. Robert Sabuda, the kind of paper engineering, gave Circus! a 5 STAR in his Moveable Book Newsletter.

My 6 month old daughter loves this book! The elmo puppet really grabs her attention. The book is pretty short, however. But, she's all smiles during the songs. She tries to grab the book, of course. It's OK with me, as long as she doesn't put it in her mouth (I don't know what kind of glue they use on board books). It gets her interested enough to sit through a few more books afterwards.

What a wonderful concept! Elmo, the puppet, is placed at the center of this book so that the reader can control Elmo's mouth and hands while having Elmo sing, "If You're Happy and You Know It." This well known song has a couple of different lyrics such as, "If you're itchy and you know it scratch your nose." Elmo is able to act out all of the lyrics and it becomes great fun for your child. My toddler adores this book. Highly recommended.

I thought this would be perfect for Christmas! I had to write a review. Some things you just don't notice online. This is a hard-cover book with an Elmo hand-puppet sticking up through of the middle of it. You put your fingers into Elmo's arms and head to make him come to life standing in the middle of the book. Each page has a verse of When You're Happy and You Know It. As you page through the book, you help Elmo clap his hands, scratch his nose and rub his tummy while you sing along. Elmo is furry and red and so cute. My 6-month-old baby loves this book. Her 3-yr-old brother can even read it to her using the hand puppet and following along with the pictures. Adorable entertainment!

I've bought this book many, many times, because I always recommend it and people always keep it. Put the movie out of your mind. The worst movie of the 1980's is actually the funniest book of the 1980's.

Read this book. Despite the time it was written, it is not dated. I read this 10 years after it was printed and I howled with laughter. Gould has a way with words, a keen sense of observation and a breakneck pace.

A former bartender myself, I found the book to be very insightful, and humerous as it followed the life of a career bartender trying to make the most out of his situation. This book gives a very truthful look at the life behind the Neon of the bar.

"Cocktail" by H. Gould

Although changed for the movie, the original book, "Cocktail" dipped into the near psychotic ravings of a middle aged bartender who had seen one too many last-calls. Each page is riviting with the colorful dramatization unique to Gould. Having been a world traveled bartender for 10 years now, I was amazed and thrilled to see an incredibly accurate insight into the thrilling yet seedy existance of a part-time job gone career. A must read for anyone who has ever looked at a clever, hot-shot bartender and thought that he had it made. Change the names and list this novel under non-fiction. Two thumbs up from bartenders everywhere!

The reading level is actually for ages 3 and up, but even babies can appreciate the bright colors and big pictures in this adorable book. For each color, there's a big removable piece in the shape of a different sea creature, and when you take it out, it reveals a fun picture. My baby loves to hold the pieces and chew on them. I am studying for the COMLEX 1 right now and it is a great review of everything...I wish I had had this book for the first two years of medical school, I think it would have helped me understand the basics. In addition, it would have helped me for OMT practicals, because you can never talk your way through OMT enough! Always keep talking! I think this will definitely help me out, glad I bought it and I will definitely use it for the future Levels of COMLEX.

I wish I had this book to use during levels 1 & 2... trust me, it is definitely excellent for level 3. The last time I seriously looked at any OMM was during my 3rd year at Des Moine, and let me tell you, now near the end of my intern year, not only did this book refresh all the OMM I had forgotten, but it explained stuff better than I ever understood it. Nobody wants to spend too much time on OMM, but it is quick and easy read - great to fill in the spaces when you don't feel like studying and want to read something "light".

I was bit skeptical when I borrowed this book from our school library- it seems it was written by two students. But after reading the first 2 chapters, I immediately bought my own copy. The beautiful thing about this book is that it finally correlates anatomy with OMM- so it actual covers those "in between" questions that the other review books fail to discuss. The pictures are EXCELLENT! They actually help to make sense of some of the more difficult concepts. I'll let you know how my Step II exam goes- but I would have loved to have this book around when taking Step I as well. Also, the beginning of the book has a little chart that tells you what chapters to read for each COMLEX exam- takes the guess work out of studying. I am definitely doing better on my practice exams- wish me luck for the real deal.

This is THE "Must Have" manual for every commodities trader.

Review Date: 2006-11-13
After many, many years of studying and trading the commodities markets, I have come to recognize Scott Barrie as the leading authority on market cycles and seasonal tendencies. There really is no better source in the trading world for this kind of information than the traders almanac, and the kind of inherent value possessed by this easy-to-follow and remarkably expansive collection of market data is rare in the industry. I cannot even fathom the amount of time and expense which it would take for me to compile this kind of knowledge on my own, so I consider the almanac to be an extraordinary value to myself as well as my associates.

All too often, the wide array of trading paraphrenalia pushed onto the market is "all hat and no cattle". The Trader's Almanac is "all cattle"- this is the kind of information that can make a real difference in a trader's bottom line. The dog-eared and well-worn pages of my 'nearly retired' 2006 grain trader's almanac have about had it, but I'm already laying the groundwork for a successful 2007 with a little help from this new expanded edition.

The Seasonal Nature of Commodities
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2006-12-17
The one most single thing that makes trading commodities exciting is the fact that they are so seasonal in nature. Think about it, commodities are basically consumable items, such as corn, wheat, beans, gold, and silver. These items are consumable items, and have a very seasonal nature to them. Take wheat for example, we plant it at the same time each year, we harvest it at the same time each year, its open to damage at the same time each year, we take it to market and have storage fees all at the same time each year. This book, The Commodity Trader's Almanac, is the key to being able to take advantage of these trading strategies. Due to these seasonal reoccuring price patterns, we have the ability to profit from such moves each and every year, as markets repeat themselves time and time again. You don't find this type of characteristics with Stocks, you can't do this with Forex, its all about commodities, and this amazing book brings that information out and available to the average trader, information that's only been available to the professional hedge fund traders until now.

I highly recommend this book, I wouldn't even think about trying to trade the commodity markets without it.

In Conquering Your Workplace: From Mail Room To Board Room, career counselor, job consultant, and life coach Dilip G. Saraf draws upon his experience and expertise in current job-market trends, career management, and the corporate workplace to provide comprehensive manual to assist both novice and veteran employees alike in understanding workplace trends in a global corporate environment where new technologies and worldwide marketplace competitions is compelling organizational hierarchies to adapt to leaner payrolls, workplace-demographic shifts, and rapidly evolving employee dynamics. Saraf explores why managers make wrong assumptions about employees, the skills to manage a manager, what to do when peers hijack agendas, apprenticing in the right job for a designed career trajectory, learning global cultures as a means of advancing careers, handling customers, avoiding organizational conundrums, knowing what to do when trouble sets in, and developing broader job perspectives to promote more career options. Practical, insightful, informed and informative, Conquering Your Workplace is very highly recommended reading for employees at all corporate levels, and would make an excellent addition to Business School and Economics Studies supplemental reading lists and reference library collections.

As an economist at a major bank, I have always struggled with how our organization works. Everything that happens around me is a mystery. How my managers do what they do (not always right!), how my colleagues treat me, especially when my work is appreciated by my superiors, and how to manage a myriad things that happen every day at work. Conquering Your Workplace: From Mail Room to Board Room-A Sourcebook for Today's Workforce!, provided many answers that I was looking for. The author has provided all the important information one should know about how organizations work in a concise and illustrative way. After reading it once, I realized how foundational this all is and, yet, how no one teaches this material. His direct experience with many of the work encounters that I have make it useful. Since reading the book, I have started using the advice in working through some of the issues that I face. The book also has a number of appendices that explain many of the topics that we encounter in our everyday work such as performance reviews and meetings. I think that this book can be used as an everyday handbook for those who want not just to survive, but to also succeed in today's organization.
