An Encouraging and Practical Guide for Resource Development
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2004-06-02
Zimmerman and Lehman have written an encouraging and practical guide sure to help diffuse the fear and loathing with which most nonprofit board members face in fund development. Straight talk about board responsibilities sets the stage. Short easy exercises suitable for board meetings demonstrate fundraising skills and techniques. "Boards That Love Fundraising" provides the script for board presidents and staff to share the practice and the joy of successful resource development within any nonprofit.

The only fundraising book you will ever need!
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2004-04-02
The authors challenge traditional attitudes, and fears, about fundraising by arguing that we should view the activity not as "tin-cup begging" but as providing a way for people to invest positively in their communities. The authors break new ground by focusing on benefits that *donors* derive from philanthropic giving and strategies to enhance these benefits. With exercises entitled "What Moves People to Give," the book offers ample opportunity for readers to apply this refreshing approach to their specific circumstances. As a Commissioner on the San Francisco Commission on the Status of Women, I also serve on the PTA board of my daughter's public elementary school, always in dire need of funds, and fundraise on behalf of my alma mater, Bryn Mawr College, which relies heavily on alumnae financial support, and I have found this book to be an invaluable resource. I recommend this easy-to-read and comprehensive guide to anyone who serves on a board, especially those of you who have been afraid of fundraising. You won't be able to put it down!

Help for Pitching Prospects

I am not associated with a non-profit, but I am an artist who is constantly looking for funding sources. I found this book
extremely helpful in suggesting ways to overcome my fear of confronting prospects face to face. It is written simply and reiterates the positive message that we need not fear requesting large amounts of money. Like in any sales game, the worst thing that can happen is rejection.
I haven't yet found people who are "thrilled to give", but doing confidence building prep before I try can only boost my chances.

I found this book to be a wonderfully straight-forward and user-friendly guide which can actually motivate a nonprofit board to sucessfully fundraise. I think it does a great job of insightfully recognizing the reluctance fundraisers have in asking for money. The authors answer this situation with, what are to me, practical and surprisingly simple ways in which to restore fundraisers' confidence (and enthusiasm!). I definately recommend it!

Carver describes how to avoid common Board mistakes and actually create the Board in a leadership role. It seems so obvious now that I read it... but I had to read it to realize what the problems were with my previous and current Board experience.

This book is tailored to answer questions about every size of Board, so read it! It's a bit dense in its language, but useful to all of us.

I am currently a newly appointed Board chairperson for a non-profit Christian school and we have been using John Carver's Policy Governance model for the last year. While we still have a long way to go to incorporate it completely into the fabric of our board processes, we have made great strides toward it in only a year. This book is excellent in helping us get there. I have also read several of John Carver's guides and although they are somewhat small for the money you have to pay for them, they also contain very good information. We hope to study these principles as part of our on-going board training during this board fiscal year.

My family and I have eaten at this restaurant many many times and it is always fabulous. You have to buy this cookbook if only to get the recipe for their blue cheese cole slaw which is elegant and delicous. If you ever visit Isle of Palms, call ahead to make a reservation. If you can't get there then this is a superb substitute.

On a recent trip to Charleston, my 16-year old daughter and I ate at The Boathouse on Isle of Palms. We tried the Smoked Gouda Macaroni and Cheese -- a fantastic twist on the tried and true recipe. Luckily, the recipe is in this elegant cookbook! Haven't tried them all, but the Pecan Crusted Chicken is also very good.

Bone Dry is one scary book: fast-paced, authentic, and suspenseful. But what I liked the most were the characters. There was not one major character who didn't feel fully-realized to me. Even the worst bad guy in it was real, which of course made it even scarier. It kept me up all night reading. I know other readers will enjoy it as much as I did.

A real page-turner! What makes this thriller so compelling, is that there is an eery sense of reality to the story although it is fiction. The authors successfully combine the best and worst of human behavior and set their characters within a fragile medical environment. Current advances in cancer treatment coupled with recent hospital scandals makes this mystery all the more plausable. "Bone Dry" is a white-knuckle read 'til the end, which makes it difficult to put down. Wouldn't be surprised to see this one jump from page to screen--it's got all the ingredients.

As a physician one would think that the last place I'd look for entertainment would be medically related literature. But I find myself drawn to it especially when the story is so plausible and the hospital and clinical characters are so true to life as was the case in this exciting and all-to-possible story. The book just whisked you away from the very start and was impossible to put down. There were some truly macabre and twisted methods that the authors came up with to agonizingly terminate at least one of the characters that only someone in the field could have come up with. But it was the premise of the story that made this one of the best medical mysteries I've read in years because this could really happen and it would be relatively easy given what I know of security in the various hospitals I've worked in to pull this off. Finally, the authors' style of inexorably building tension within a framework of making all the medical technology and jargon understandable to the lay reader just added to the pleasure of this diabolical plot. I highly recommend this book.

Review Date: 2003-02-04
In San Francisco's Ridgewood Hospital, the staff is upset as the bone marrow to be used in an autologous replacement surgery to save the life of patient Carl Chapman is missing from the lab. Especially shook up is nurse Gina Mazzio, who has been with Carl from the beginning of his cancer treatment and now cannot understand why he seems so stoic about his pending death.

Lab worker Faye Lindstron stole the bone marrow at the machinations of her boyfriend Frankie Nellis. She has taken others also as Frankie demands fifty thousand dollars from the near death sufferers or they will die. As Alan Vasquez of administration tries to bury the scandal, Gina and a few other caring medical practitioners struggle to uncover why a simplistic procedure has gone awry not knowing that Frankie will kill to continue his lethal scheme.

Medical procedural fans will have a field day with the exciting BONE DRY even with knowing the perpetrators from almost the beginning as authors Bette Golden Lamb and J.J. Lamb use dramatic irony to make Gina question whether Vasquez is the culprit. The story line is action packed never slowing down until the final beach blanket scene. Though Faye is too pathetic a character and Frankie is too evil, readers will devour this strong thriller starring a wonderful Bronx transplant that is quite the lioness when it comes to protecting her cubs (patients).

Need to ease the trauma of a bloody elbow? Loosen up over the loose skin of a bulging blister? This book is for you!
Who knew scabs and blisters could be so irresistibly touchable? From the delightfully witty-and informative-verse, to the sticky, picky, bubbly, and band-aided catalogue of injuries, this is a must have for parents with a sense of humor and a desire to make every moment a learning experience. We received this as a gift for our toddler. After he got that first scraped knee, we took the book out and opened to the "SCRAPES" page, featuring a teary-eyed girl with a scraped knee. Big deal right?...but on further inspection, the scrape on her knee is in fact a sticky, red "boo boo." We all touched the scrape and screamed with delight as the page clung to our fingers! My son was instantly won over. It is certainly a favorite (not just for him...
The entire book is interactive-you can lift a flap of a cast to see an x-ray of a fractured arm, weave a ribbon to mimic stitches, connect the dots of a rash... you pick the injury, they have created a clever way to discuss how the body heals and what it looks and feels like.

Move over, Pat the Bunny. The Boo Boo Book has arrived. Through this delightfully interactive board book, young children can learn about the various minor mishaps that sometimes befall them. Many pages provide clever ways for children to explore further. For example, under the cast is an x-ray; beneath the hand is a real Band-Aid.

When I read this book to my four-year-old granddaughter, she told true accounts of her own "boo boos". We had a grand time recalling occasions when we had skinned our knees, ended up with blisters on our feet, and bruised our arms. We also talked about being brave when we get hurt. More importantly, The Boo Boo Book provided me with the opportunity to talk about being careful and "playing it safe". Children of all ages will love this welcome addition to their library.

As a pediatrician and a mother, I have been delighted with the Boo Boo Book! My four year-old daughter was given a copy and she is fascinated by this engaging, rhyming tale of bumps and bruises. I like reading it with her because the explanations are clear and kid-oriented. My daughter loves the interactive illustrations. Her favorite is the sticky red "blood" and I think the x-ray of a broken bone under the lift- a- flap cast is extremely cool.

Joy Masoff has hit upon a topic that is truly interesting to kids of all ages--and her rhyming explanations are both educational and entertaining. A great book!

There is a great book called The Boys in Control, and the author is Pyllis Reynolds Naylor. This story is sort of about baseball. A girl named Eddie joins a boys base ball team as the pitcher. There is a boy named Jake and he plays pitcher as well. He wants to be the only picther so he want Eddie to do a bad job so he can be the only picther. I just think that it will be a good book for boys and girls to read.

The BEST by far

Review Date: 2004-08-27
Out of the whole series, this one is the best by far. Maybe not the best of Naylor's, but very close. It certianly is better than most of the children books where it's all, meet boy/girl-boy/girl has problem-boy/girl struggles- boy/girl finds solution. They really are boring books.

Now let me give you the storyline of what's happening.
- The girls find an old album that used to belong to the Bensons. It contained very funny, and embarassing pictures of the Hartford and Benson boys.
- The boys find out and are VERY embarassed, and plan on getting it back, one way or another.

- Jake and Eddie are on the baseball team.
- On the day of the championship, Mrs.Hartford by mistake volunteered to run a charity sale of some sort.
- Since Mr. and Mrs.Hartford are Jake's parents, they have to go to the championship.
- Since Josh is Jake's twin, he has to go to the championship.
- Since Peter is too young to help with the sale, he's going to the championship.
- Who's left?

I started reading this book along with "Puppies and Friends," to my son when he was just one month old and he loved it and still loves it. It has literally calmed him down during a crying jag - amazing book! I only wish there were more than just two books of this type in the Priddy series. The combination of color, texture and sound is perfect. Love this book!

My 8mth old daughter's favorite book for months! There are buttons at the bottom which make animal sounds corresponding to the pages. Plus each page has a section where you can feel the animal's fur, feathers, skin, etc. After using this book every night for months the batteries are still going strong although the battery compartment is easy to open if replacement were needed. My only complaint is that there aren't enough pages. I also purchased the Puppy version of this book but she wasn't nearly as interested.

I just got this book for my 5 month old daughter and so far it is a big hit. This is the first sound book she's ever experienced. The first time I played the sounds she was staring at it in awe. And then slowly she started smiling and kicking her feet in excitement. I am planning to get the other one as well (Puppy & Friends) since this one was such a winner. She hasn't touched the various feel spots in the book yet, but I am sure she will when she gets older.

This book is very well-written and flows quite smoothly --- there's not so much of the choppy, outline-ish feeling found in other books of the BRS series. Keep in mind that it's 600 pages long, so you'll need to budget your time accordingly. It took me the full 6 weeks of my pediatrics rotation to get through the book. The questions at the end of each chapter (and in the comprehensive exam) are challenging, but they'll prepare you well for the end-of-rotation exam. Highly recommended!

Review Date: 2007-07-04
I'm usually not a big fan of the BRS series, they just tend to give me the impression of long text description for each topic with minimal picture/illustration. However, I got this one because one of the authors wrote the school exam for my peds clerkship, and I heard that the exam was based on this book. Turned out that the book was pretty good, and was very comprehensive in the variety of topics covered. The chapters are organized by organ systems (Renal, pulmonary, etc.) Practice questions follow each chapter and there is also a comprehensive exam at the very end. There do seem to be more details than needed for a 3rd year med student level, and reading the entire book once does take some time.

This is one of the best review book out there, definitively the best for Peds. I only wish more BRS were available for step 2. It is much much better than Blueprints Peds, which is the other one I bought. Great questions at the end of every chapter. Excelent format that helps you retain a lot more than you'd do with other review books.

What do farm animals do all day? Well, they certainly stay busy, busy, busy! Kind of like the kiddos that will read all about them in Busy Barnyard.

Sixth in Tricycle Press' Busy board book series, Busy Barnyard takes an up close and personal look at farm animals on-location doing what they do best. In lyrical fashion, the author/photographer team perfectly complement one another to catch the essence of barnyard life. This isn't your typical "cows moo" book either. No, instead the animals romp, kiss, scrub and boss--and there is a little humor also with crossing chickens.

I've never met a child that wasn't fascinated with farm animals. This sturdy board book will be a welcome addition to any toddler's library.

Armchair Interviews says: Busy Barnyard is a lively look at farm life for the toddling crowd.

The repetition and rhyme make this a nice book to read to my English speaking children as the sing song text keeps their interest. I am quite pleased with this one.
