I am an elementary teacher and I use these books in my class to supplement our Character Ed program (which isn't the greatest). My students love the Little Miss and Mr. Men books. I have to keep them behind my desk and let them "check them out" like library books or they fight over them. The are excellent to use in a pinch if you have a book that pertains to a problem that has developed in class (especially rudeness or bossiness). It is easy to read the book and have a quick class chat about what is going on. I highly recommend all of the books for anyone who teaches, home schools, or children in general. They are a great asset.

I enjoyed the Mr. Men books as a child and was pleased to see they had been republished now that I have a 4 year old son of my own. Mr. Noisy is the best of the bunch, in my mind. It's great fun to get loud with Mr. Noisy and SCREAM REAL LOUD THAT I'D LIKE A PIECE OF MEAT. And it is just as much fun to whisper - something Mr. Noisy tries for once in his life to good result. Get in character and have some great fun reading this book with your kids!

I've bought a few of the Mr. Men books for my son as I grew up reading them when I was his age, growing up in the UK. I find that a lot of the really good children's books are 10, 15, and 30 years old. A lot of the new books are books about nothing. Nobody gets offended but the tree that died to produce a boring inferior work. Anyway....
Mr. Noisy is a really noisy person (a big round red blob with hands, feet and eyes) who is rude to Mr. Butcher and Mrs. Baker (who are an item??;)). They then get together and conspire to change Mr. Noisy's rude and noisy ways by simply pretending they are deaf. After going to bed hungry (and with a little more encouragement) Mr. Noisy changes his brash ways and everyone is happy. Don't you love those happy endings?!

This is one of my favorite "new baby" gifts. You can use motions and great expression when reading this book to little ones. It makes them laugh and really connect with the book. This book is also amusing to adults which is a good thing because when a little one likes a book, you have to read it over and over again!

This book is so wonderful for little ones and very easy to read "just one more time" - although for some reason when I read this to my class, I used a british accent for the Mrs. Strange, but the kids loved, loved it!
An absolute must for any one working with young children.

I first came across this book while student teaching and fell in love instantly. I have used it for many theme units - letter (W), farm unit, and rhyming words unit. I have even made flannel board pieces to go along with the story and put in my literacy centers. My supervising teachers loved the flannel pieces so much they had me make them some also. You children/students will love this book and will in time learn to read it themselves, just as my kindergartners did. GET THIS BOOK :).
So glad this is available to the general public!

I LOVE Mrs. Wishy-Washy. I used many of Joy Cowley's books when I taught Kindergarten. I had almost evey Big Book of Mrs. Wishy-Washy and they were some of the children's favorites. I am now at home with my 3 year old twins and 15 month old daughter and was so excited to see this book in our bookstore one day. I thought they were only available through Rigby reading programs. Anyhow, I bought it as soon as I saw it and my twins love it! It is a wonderful predictable book and is great for teaching some pre-reading skills as well as just enjoying the story. Also, it is the perfect length for wiggly toddlers/preschoolers. Short and sweet.

This is the only book my 8 month old daughter will pay attention to when we read to her. She actually laughs out loud to it! It helps to read it in a bad British accent! We read it before bath time and then play wishy-washy in the tub which keeps her giggling. Love it!

I have purchased several Spanish books on Amazon and as always make many of my purchases based on the reviews of those who have gone before me. My daughter is trying to teach my granddaughter how to speak Spanish and she loved this book. Of course she loved sucking on the corners too but it was colorful, well planned out and joyful.

We bought this book because my son loved "Mi familia y yo" by the same author. This one has a bit more vocab to get hold of, but we are slowly getting to learn the body parts. Love it that both languages are side by side. Another great resource from Gladys Rosa Mendoza.

This is an excellent book with respect to teaching young children Spanish! My granddaughter will be three years old next month (01-15-08) and there is nothing she cannot say in English, so teaching her Spanish is fairly easy. She is familiar with the language since I speak to her. However, she finds it more fun to speak when we use the book. In the back of the book there is a section that teaches the reader how to pronounce the words for the children in the event that the reader is also learning. I am fluent in Spanish, but did not teach my two boys. I am now teaching my two grandchildren; books like this are a perfect way to help children and adults learn.

There are actual complete sentences in this book in both English and Spanish (not true of a lot of board books), which is perfect for this age and level range. This will be a great addition to Flip Flop Spanish workbook (level 2, not released yet) to help review or even introduce body parts.
I use this board book in my Spanish toddler and 4-7 year old classes, and the students love translating from Spanish to English and back again as I cover the other sentence, or if they can't read yet, guessing what Spanish words will be on that page because of the pictures. It's sturdy and well-illustrated. A great teaching resource.

I love this book - so does my little one. It was my favorite as a child and when I saw it in a store, I didn't even think about it. I just grabbed it and ran! It does an excellent job of teaching little ones their numbers and number recognition. It also has them count each thing that appears in the illustrations. The pictures are just darling and very life-like as well. You have to buy this book - it's really that good.

This book is wonderful! The pictures are very colorful and peaceful to look at. Just as important, the flow and rhythm of the book is amazingly catching. I have had the entire book memorized for years, and that is without even trying.
I loved the book at 5, and I still love it at 27. I had this book as a kid, and I give it to all my friends who have children.
If you know someone who is learning to count, or someone who is a child at heart, this is the perfect book for them!

My dad read this book to my sister and I when we were small. We loved it more than any other book out there! The rhymes and illustrations were superior. We all still remember each and every number and group of animals associated with the number. My sister has given this book as a baby gift for years, and now that she is having a baby of her own, she is planning on having the nursery designed with the adorable animals! It is a must read and really helps little kids enjoy both math and reading throughout life!!!

I have read this book many times over the past 25 years at different stages in my life and I have loved it every time. Virginia Woolf is my favorite author (this and To The Lighthouse are her best works, in my opinion), and have given the book to my daughter, Katharine, for Christmas. (Guess who she's named after?) This book is an "easy" read, unlike many of Virginia Woolf's other novels, and follows a conventional style. However, there is nothing conventional about her writing; I have yet to come across another novelist with her ability to touch on everyday life with such subtlety and nuance. The characters in this book are very likeable - it's as if I have known them in my own life. Love this book!

As in the other Virginia Woolf books I have read, what strikes me first and foremost is the wonderful writing. The descriptions are phenomenal, starting with the surroundings and continuing with the character's facial expressions. Some of the passages are pure poetry and the characters are beautifully and consistently drawn out. Oddly, although we know that Katharine is beautiful, we do not get a description of her, or of any other person in the story, with the exception of William Rodney.
Woolf became a little heavy when it went into the minds of the characters who are in crises, but as one reaches the end of the book, all is forgiven.
An excellent read!

Here is an artist at work, painting the nuances of the heart, creating living people, reacting to the subtleties of mood, ambiance, the weather, and external perceptions that make up how we live and who we are. No matter what you think of these people, you have a chance to live with them and understand them, feel their conflicts, their love, and their pains. Virginia Woolf is the ballast that offsets all the one-book-wonder authors, the cynics, the nasty moderns, and those authors who have given up on anything positive in the world. Like Shakespeare, her work will live on long after so many others are forgotten. That's because she offers us art, hope, vision, and the truth about our humanity. It's all here in this book, if you choose to read it.

I used to work as the children's coordinator at our local public library, and this book was a favorite for the age 1-3 year crowd. Now that I have my own children, this is the must read book before bed. My 14 month old "reads" this book to me every night. The simple text and cute pictures are perfect. She says the words., then does the animal sound. Ath the end, she kisses the baby goodnight and sometimes has a conversation! This is a must have on your shelf!

A simple little book, that seems like fun. What really sold me is that my daughter started 'reading' the book to us, after having it read to her a few times. Plus, she has so much fun reading this book. After deciding this was the perfect book, and that we should get a copy for ourselves as well as some extras for gifts, I was surprised to find it out of print. For a two or three year old, this strikes me as a classic book that should never go out of print!

This is one of those books that the more you look at the pictures, the more you see. The illustrations are both beautiful and whimsical. I also really like how many of the images are repeated throughout the book. The book is sturdy and pages are easy to turn. This is an amazing book! My son is 14-months old and this has been his favorite book for a few months. He loves looking at all the pictures and has learned many of his first words from this book. He also loves searching for the little pictures in the background of each page. This is also my favorite children's book that we have. We have had it for a year and I am still finding new ways in which all the pictures are interconnected with each reading. I never tire of reading it to my son and we read it a lot! Because it is a picture book with a single word description on each page it leaves the reader freedom to elaborate and make up stories about the people and objects. It is an excellent book and I plan to give it at every baby shower and birthday party I attend.

What an amazing book! Seemingly a simple book at first, with each page "Picture This" increases in complexity and fascination. Each picture refers back (or forward) to other illustrations in the book in clever, intelligent ways. This book is a joy to read through. My son and I can't put it down when we reach the end; we immediately bounce back to the beginning to recommence our journey. I plan on giving this to every child (and perhaps an adult or two) I know.

This is a great book for a variety of ages of children. You can start by reading the little ones this book because there is only one word or label per page, such as "hill" or "snowman". So the ones who are impatient can keep flipping those pages fast as you read! When they get older and learn to read it's a great book to start with, because they can match the word with the picture in the book. And at any age it is fun to examine the gorgeous illustrations. Not only do many of the objects reappear from one page to another, but if you are paying close attention you can watch the progression of the seasons. I loved this book so much I bought it as a gift for a friend, and now we are both hooked on all books with Alison Jay illustrations!

Looking at this book reminded me of the many toys and games that I grew up with or found in the attic when I went snooping through the old stuff as a kid. This book is very well done, with lots of pictures and interesting facts. It is obvious that the book is very well researched. Worth the money.

Have you ever wondered who the creators are of the wonderful toys and games you and your family have enjoyed over the years? THE PLAYMAKERS has the answers. You may be especially interested in those most famous or very rare toys or games that you have tried or maybe just heard about over the years.
Even those that may deny they are toy lovers must admit they have some time or another played a game they really enjoyed or had a favorite toy of their childhood. Therefore, everyone is a toy lover! THE PLAYMAKERS will bring back memories of happy times for all ages. The collective book Tim Walsh has put together is remarkable. This is not about toys that can be picked up in any toy store or mall or even those toys made just for children. No, no, no! This is about toys for everyone: young and old, male and female. Toys and games made for all to enjoy.
This colorful, informative book by Tim Walsh is so fascinating that every family should have one in their bookcase. THE PLAYMAKERS is a terrific book that is not only fun to read but is also an historical chapter in the civilization of man.

I was looking for a price guide for these toys and this isn't it, but I didn't even care because this book is fabulous. Wonderful pictures and the origination of the most beloved toys. Big, thick heavy book. Nice coffee table book.

If you have fond recollections of tossing a Frisbee with a friend, putting a hotel on Boardwalk, using a "Q" on a triple word score, dressing a Barbie doll, watching a Slinky descend a stairway, yelling "Yahtzee," or winning a game of Trivial Pursuit or Pictionary, this fine retrospective by Tim Walsh belongs on your coffee table. All those memories and more came back for me as I turned the pages of "The Playmakers -- Amazing Origins of Timeless Toys" and learned of the inspirations, the struggles, the near-misses and the overwhelming successes of toy and game inventors of the 20th Century. The nostalgic experience and the well-researched backgrounds of these fun and educational diversions make for hours of reading and fact-finding enjoyment. I was surprised to learn that most of the big sellers over the decades have been of American origin -- though Trivial Pursuit came out of Canada and Rubik's Cube has Hungarian roots. It's a bullet-proof selection for anyone on your Christmas list who never quite grew up when it comes to playing with toys and games.

A flip through the pages of Tim Walsh's "The Playmakers" is a trip in a time machine. I had more fun reminiscing about my favorite toys than I remember having when I played with them 25 years ago! The genesis of the greatest toys of all time is a captivating story that has never before been told in such interesting detail. Tim's passion for playthings oozes from the pages and stirred nostalgia in the heart of this overgrown kid.

It is a wonderful book to help children appreciate their heritage. The text is well-written.
The people and closenes in the illustrations are beautiful. However, I am disappointed in the quality of the illustrations.
I hope they make a new edition with better illustrations by the time we have our second child.

My son, Maxwell, loves this book. We brought it for his 1st birthday. His dad reads it to him often. It's a positive reinforcement of the uniqueness of being African American. This book does a great job at highlighting the beautiful features of African American children. Maxwell smiles and laughs when he sees his own pretty brown reflection at the end of the book.

This book is great. I bought this for my son shortly after he was born. 11 months later, this is his favorite. It's a great depiction of a father and son and it's a good way for baby to start learning about himself (i.e. Eyes, Lips, Hair, etc.) And the last page has a reflective mirror so he can look at himself. He was physically drawn to his own reflection. Now when he gets to the end, he looks at his face and laughs. You and your little one will love this book!

Based on the editorial written above I passed on this book. I was surprised to find it at a used book shop and after reading it just once to my 14 month old son it became his favorite. He will hunt through about 50 books on his shelf to pull it out. He has started touching the parts of his face as each one is mentioned in the story and even kisses the baby when the book comes to the lips kissing. Of course the mirror at the book is greeted with smiles.

This delightful story with equally delightful illustrations is a rare gem. I like the way the baby is taught about having a pretty brown face. I love the loving way the father and child look at one another and interact. It is for all races and it does an excellent job of showing love for a baby and many children will want to explore their own faces after reading and/or hearing this lovely story. Be sure to check out "Baby Dance" by Ann Taylor, et al. as well.

You must have this book. My kids can't read yet, but they love this book. I love it too since the art work is so great and it is fun to find the mice, puppy, cat, butterfly, and spider on each page. The artwork and "cutouts" for the dog and cat are well layed out. Lisa McCue works in her initials too on various items like a window sash and book binding as well as a copy of the book in the attic scene. I never get tired of looking at this book as a parent.

I first purchased this book for my son when he was a toddler... He is now 17 Years Old! He loved this book and we enjoyed comparing the pages to see what items were on EVERY page. Now that we have been blessed with a daughter (she is now 11 months old), it is one of her two favorite books (she also loves Baby Minnie's Busy Day, a Disney board book). Even at 7 months old, she could point out the white kitty when I asked her "Where's the Kitty Cat?" I highly recommend this book and would like to find the other books in the series to purchase for my daugher.

My thirteen-year old, severely autistic daughter had this book first when she was about three or four years old. It was her favorite book because each page had the same four characters to look for although the background art changed. She expected the puppy, the kitty, the mouse and spider all to be there, and to her delight, they always were. She wore this book out, and then it went out of print. We bought a used copy last week from bibliohound through amazon.com, to give her for her thirteenth birthday. It arrived in nearly new condition, and my daughter will be thrilled! This is the third or fourth used book I've purchased through amazon.com, and I've been happy with every purchase. If you can find a used copy of this book, it is WELL WORTH THE MONEY SPENT! The artwork is so delightful that I even enjoyed the hundreds of times I spent looking at it with my daughter.

My son got this book when he was 16 months and loved it then and STILL loves it now (he is 22 months). He loves to point out the puppy, cat, mouse, flowers, ball, bat, chair, etc... His favorite thing is to turn the pages with the holes in this board book. It is wonderful! I highly recommend it!
