The Smarty Jones story comes to life in this funny and informative book. I had ordered a copy for the holidays, and have now purchased another as a father's day gift. This is a new edition of the book, with bigger print, larger size, nice photos, and some new information. You will laugh, be amused, and just plain feel good as you read this book. It has lots of facts and quotes that make you feel like you were there for Smarty's ride to greatness. This is more than a horse humor book, it's a story that will make you say, "Smarty is one of us!" This is an excellent book for grown ups and kids who like to read. If you are looking for some prime summer reading to take to the beach or up in the mountains, this book will make your day.

Smarty Jones' story is not told in this book. Instead, you hear what Smarty thinks about all he's done from his own humorous point of view. I laughed at his technique and small jokes that made the book so loveable. Although, of course, the book is not written by Smarty, I appreciate the author's attempt and, I have to say, did a good job of it. This book is nothing serious. Although at numerous points it tries to be. This book is delightful to all readers, despite your association with horses or not. I have to say, this is the only book that makes you think for a moment you're in school and should be paying close attention. So, before you read this book, make sure you take out a notebook and pencil, fore, as Smarty says, "There will be a quiz at the end of the book". His is a fun ride, a pleasing class. Have fun, everyone.

This was a delightful read. It is light and funny, and very insightful in places. The author obviously had access to Smarty's connections, and so is able to give us a realistic glimpse into Smarty's daily life. There are some very cute photos too. The only reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 is that the print quality of the photos is very poor. It looks like they were reproduced on a xerox machine. Even so I still recommend this book for all Smarty Jones fans.

I am a fan of Horse racing but first and foremost a horse lover. I love to see them run and be free , the way they were meant to be. Over the years we have seen many great horses come and go and we were lucky enough in our lifetime to get to root for the ancestor of the Great champion , Secretariat , The one and only Smarty Jones, just the name brings a smile to my face. I'll never never forget the excitement of watching Smarty run his way to the top and into our hearts. I wanted Smarty to win the Triple Crown just as badly as anyone but when our wish didn't come true our heart's all felt the dissapointment. Smarty's loss taught us one thing , as long as you do your best, that is all that counts. Smarty made our blood pump as we watched him sweep the preakness and warmed our hearts when we realized just like the people we love sometimes we will be dissapointed by those we love but we love them anyway. Bob Merz's book brought it right back, except this time we get it straight from Smarty! his ride to the top , his brush with near death and his recovery. We see inside the soul of our hero Smarty Jones. The book is filled with great a great story line, easy to read for even kids and has lots of pictures of Smarty in all kinds of situations ( I love the bath ones!) what a beautiful, pampered boy he is! The book goes behind the scenes telling the inside sccop about the Chapman's, John Servis, Stewart Elliot and all the behind the scenes people like his groomer Mario who keeps him looking like a million bucks and made it all happen thru faith in Smarty and lots of hard work. I smiled as I fondly remembered the happiness and excitement Smarty brought into my life as well as the lives and hearts of America. If you love Smarty Jones and love to laugh, you will love this book!! All the Horse lovers should have one under their Christmas tree this year.

Funny--a good read for all ages

I read this book and then gave it to my 10 year old daughter. We both laughed. It's funny to read it as if it were coming from 'the horse's mouth."
It also has lots of inside stuff on Smarty Jones that wasn't in the press.
It's sort of like listening to a modern day Mr. Ed. Good pictures with funny captions too.

On September 2, 1989, the sailing yacht "Fazisi" launched into the Whitbread Round the World Race and nautical history. She became the first every (and only) boat from the former Soviet Union to enter one of the most challenging and prestigious endurance races the world has to offer. Built in the Soviet Union, equipped with Western sails, rig and electronics, sponsored by Pepsi-Cola International, and co-captained by Skip Novak, the Fazisi bravely challenged the most treacherous waters on the planet. Author Vladislav Murnikov was the Fazisi's project manger and designer, and tells this remarkable and memorable story from a firsthand, eyewitness perspective. Race To Freedom is highly recommended for readers who appreciate true life adventure at its very best.

It seems like I set this book on my table and the pages started to turn by themselves. The book disappeared: I fell into a world of history, courage and bold determination. I held on to my chair as Fazisi pounded the waves. I felt as if I were trying to break out of Russia. Not only is this book a great around-the-world-race story, but it is filled with history. Yes, the tale is impossible, but it happened. I purchased more and sent them to friends who can't stop thanking me.

A good sailing story needs to be about more than simply sailing, and Vlad Murnikov's book "Race to Freedom" is just that kind of book. True, it's about sailing, in fact it's about one of the last great sailing adventures, the Whitbread Round the World Race, but it is much more than that. It's a personal story about Vlad's transition from life in communist Russia, to a life on the free streets of America. It's a story of hope and struggle and inspiration, perspiration and desperation, and through it all Vlad weaves the story of the first ever, and by happenstance, the last ever Soviet Whitbread entry. And who better to tell this wonderful story than the man who started it all. As Vlad tells it; "I was traveling through the night on a train from Moscow to ........... reading an outdated copy of Sail Magazine. I had found the magazine at a book store in Moscow. It was a rare find in those days, but lucky for me it was a bonus issue about the 1995/96 Whitbread race." As his train swayed across the dark landscape, a germ of an idea firmly planted itself in his resolve. Vlad vowed to field a Soviet entry in the next Whitbread race. It took a man a rare courage and blind optimism to think that he could pull it off, but once you have read "Race to Freedom," you will come to realize that Vlad is indeed a man of rare courage and unwavering optimism. How else could he have designed, built, found sponsorship and raced his yacht around the world at a time when the Soviet Union was barely learning to crawl into democracy and capitalism?

I have a personal affection for this book. Indeed I was lucky enough to be invited by Murnikov to race the first leg of the Whitbread on board the boat. I must admit to being surprised when Vlad leapt into the rubber dinghy moments before the start of the race, and waved us goodbye as we sailed over the horizon. I only discovered later that he was returning to shore to continue the never ending search for money, that ingredient key to any successful sailing campaign. It was this type of selfless determination (he would rather have been sailing than fund raising) that saw the Fazisi project through to the end and placed it squarely in the history books.

While the book takes the reader through the struggles of organizing a project of this scale, it also delights the reader with vivid descriptions of life on board and introduces them to the cast of colorful characters that made the trip happen. Their personal narratives are woven into the story and add depth and perspective. One of the most important figures is Vlad's wife Tatiana, without whose support the project would have faltered on the drawing board. She adds a chapter of her own to the book, and it is a beautifully written insight into her own personal misgivings about the campaign, and her voyage to freedom in the west. Vlad and Tatiana now live in the US, forsaking their homeland for pull of America and a life without limits. You will enjoy their story. It is told with candor and a hint of a Russian accent. Mostly you will be inspired to have adventures of your own, realizing that anything is possible if you just have the courage to dream.

Any information about tires is a treasure!
Helpful Votes: 12 out of 12 total.
Review Date: 2005-04-03
The tire is the most important part of an automobile, and the least covered by the literature. That's why any information about tires is a treasure. The complexity of the structure and behavior of the tire are such that no complete and satisfactory theory has been propounded. Books on vehicle dynamics are available but they are mostly written by academics who emphasize mathematical rather than clear explanation of how things really work. The tire might be the most useful and complicated device humans make, but the tire manufacturers provide no useful information to their customers. People are forced to buy tires mainly on the basis of price and company reputation. Even race teams get tire data only sporadically, and that data is pretty useless anyway. Tire performance is necessarily highly dynamic, but tire data comes mainly from testing under static conditions.

This book describes basic properties of components of the rubber compound, carbon black reinforcement, and so on. It also shows mechanical model for rubber: "If you apply a cyclic force the rubber will deform mostly like a spring and give back the force applied to it, but also partly like a damper which is sensitive to the speed (frequency ) of the applied force". The book breaks rubber friction into adhesion (molecular bonding) and mechanical keying (deformation friction). Mechanical keying becomes more important when the road surface is lubricated by dust, water or ice; here is where another interesting property of rubber, viscoelasticiity comes into play. "Press your thumbnail into a street tire and the rubber rebounds. Press it into a racing tire and the mark stays there, recovering only slowly. This is a simple but crude test of hysteresis, or energy loss, in rubber". The book analyzes surface texture effects on rubber friction - how the slope of the asperities affect friction, and "the myth of off-line in the rain". Tire behavior is another major issue of the book.

The last 75 pages of the book (chapter 11) are not directly about tires, and devoted to "Basic Vehicle Dynamics", in case if you don't have an appropriate book on that topic, e.g. "Race Car Vehicle Dynamics" by Milliken Bill and Doug.

I also recommend "Mechanics of Pneumatic Tires". It is a PDF that you can freely download from the publisher's website using an internet search engine. This PDF is an excerpt from "Theory of Ground Vehicles, 3rd Edition" by J. Y. Wong.

If you race, and read, read this book

The Racing & high-performance Tire "using the tires to tune for grip & Balance" by Paul Haney.

As an autocross racer I know that tires are the second most important factor in quick laps; (the driver being the first) and this book told me everything I wanted to know about racing tires.

Graphs abound showing grip (as lateral force) verses slip angle, and camber curves showing, grip verses tire camber. The graphs and drawings are interspersed with text explanations and stories from the tire and racing industries.

This is a "near engineering textbook." Concepts of force, pitch, Center of Gravity, spring rate and contact patch are well covered, but the mathematics coverage is very light. One can read the book and work any equations presented with simple algebra (no calculus required.) For me, as a technically minded racer, but not a tire engineer, the level of detail was superb; in depth without being mind numbing.

While many of the concepts in the book I have seen before; frequently they are presented in a confusing, incomplete or contradictory way in more shallow treatments (say for instance in car magazines, or on forums on the `net). I learned some things that I hadn't seen before as well. For instance there is a graph on page 197 showing "self aligning torque vs. slip angle... (for) 3 cambers" It shows that Self Alignment Torque decreases as slip angles increase, where grip is maximized. Leading to the concept that: "One of the holy grails of racecar setup is to have the steering torque fall off at maximum grip and give the driver a signal that the grip limit has been reached." A new concept for me and something I'll be looking for this racing season, while driving my Mustang Cobra in SCCA SM class racing.

While the majority of the book deals with tires; 3 chapters at the end deal with tuning and vehicle dynamics. Suddenly after reading about tires in great detail, a short explanation about anti-roll-bar tuning made much more sense.

In short if you want to study the engineering of tire construction and calculus of vehicle dynamics look elsewhere; but if you race and you want to know more about tires and how they relate to fast times on the track (and if you're a racer you should); get this book and read it cover to cover.

A technical book that you can't put down?
Helpful Votes: 9 out of 10 total.
Review Date: 2004-07-09
Beleive it or not, this technical book had me glued to its pages like a great work of fiction. Haney is an excellent writer, and the 'meat' of the text is intertwined with great real-world stories and examples from motorsport. Interviews with Mario Andretti, Dan Gurney, as well as other less famous but no less competent vehicle dynamic experts are included.

The first part of the book is everything you could have ever imagined you'd like to know about tires. There are explanations and insights into tire manufacturing and testing that I don't think you could find anywhere else. If you are into any form of motorsport you realize how important tires are; this book will help you understand how tires function and, even more importantly, how to use this information to go faster!

The second section of the book is basic vehicle dynamics. If you're well read, most of that will be review. But for beginners, I think the way Haney starts with tire dynamics and works ino the vehicle is very natural and a good way to learn for the first time.

This book is technical but easy to read, contains information and discussion that will be enjoyable for veterans yet not overwhelm newcomers to vehicle dynamics. Even if you have a large library I promise you this book will remain one of your all-time favorites.

What a revelation! We have been told for years that our mind harnesses the power to overcome all. In Ross and Ronn's book, these principles are succinctly laid out with techniques and exercises directly related to race driving. I recognized many situations in my own racing and have used their exercises to improve my performance and confidence on the race track. This book is a must read for anyone in racing (or in life)who wants to ensure consistency. For those who think racing is all guts - you are missing the boat (or shall I say the checkered flag) by not reading this book! PS - They also have a wonderful seminar too!

In the olympics, studies have shown that those who practice mentally (visualization, psychology, self-talk, etc) as well as physically (actual physical training) do better than those who just grind it out on the training field.

In a sport where there is a fusion of man and machine, it is even more important to "Maximize Your Racine Performance" by adhering to the strategies such as what Ross Bentley has outlined.

If you're a driver who has reached a plataeu and can't seem to improve, there's a great likelihood that it's not more practice or track time that's needed -- but more mental practice. And that's cheaper, too!

Ross outlines great mental techniques in this book that are easy to follow, and very applicable to the sport of race car driving.

For a bigger picture on Mental Training, I urge to to also look at Ken Baum's The Mental Edge. Then make sure you have this book by Ross to have mental training specific to race car driving.

Bill and Carol have have given us a wonderful history of the first 60 years of the Tour de France. They have brought to life riders who are long forgotten but deserve to be remembered. The descriptions of riders with all of their strengths and flaws make them human. The descriptions of the races themsleves give the reader the impression that Bill was in the follow car behind the race. The Tour de France is a fascinating and complicated topic, and Bill and Carol do it justice and then some.

Beyond the descriptions of the races, the explanation of how the race itself developed and evolved is fascinating. To have a world class treatment of cycling history and sports marketing on the same pages is truly remarkable. I had no idea that a possible explanation for the yellow jersey is that yellow cloth was the cheapest cloth.

Finally, this book is a fun read. Bill and Carol's passion for cycling comes through beautifully. They express opinions and present the colorful history of the Tour in a lively and engaging manner. You will be richly rewarded for picking up this book.

I'll admit this right up front. I'm a big-time fan of the Tour de France, and pre-disposed to liking this book. But this is a GREAT book anyway. Bill knows his subject, and writes as if he's the one newspaper reporter covering the race who really does have the inside scoop on what's going on. He lays out each year's race chronologically, taking no shortcuts, and always leaving you with that desire to know what happens next. You can put it down between years, but I dare you to find a stopping point within the chapter of each race!

This is not a coffee-table book with great photos, nor is it a first-person journey like Paul Kimmage's excellent "Rough Ride." Rather, it's a compelling re-telling of the race itself, seen with the clarity and knowledge that comes from exceptional research, in a style more similar to Sports Illustrated than a history book. Can't wait for Volume II covering 1965-on.

I've personally seen various stages of the race most years dating back to 1988 and reading some of the passages Bill and Carol have written about those and other editions make me think somehow Bill was there too. I eagerly await their upcoming history of my favorite race, Il Giro d'Italia!

The Story of the Tour de France, Volume 1, is not only the finest documentary of the world's greatest sporting event, it genuinely places each moment of the Tour, from inception through 1964, within the political, social, and historical context of the time. This intelligently-written book gives the reader a focused sense of what things were like at the creation of the race, and how it changed through the years, right up to the dawn of modern bicycle racing. Bill and Carol craft narratives of the races that are crystaline, and they capture the pivotal moments of each race, always conveying the urgency and excitement. Nowhere have I seen these great races described in such interesting and captivating detail. The reader is placed back in time, observing these great riders almost as if they are there. More than just a series of race synopses, the book delves into the riding styles, personality traits, weaknesses, and foibles of many of the riders, giving a truly 3-dimensional picture of the races and racers. And when words cannot describe the torture of these early races, there are many photographs showing riders toiling over mountain passes on unpaved roads.

Many road biking enthusiasts may have heard the names Coppi, Anquetil, Leducq, and others, but they have never had them described so vividly. I know of no other book that provides imagery of the Tour de France as this book does. In that respect, it is singular and unique, and if it weren't so well wordsmithed, it would still win by default. If you ride a bicycle; if you have watched the Tour de France on television; or if you have an interest in the most grueling sporting event in the world, you must read this book. I can't wait for Volume 2.

Very highly recommended.

BILL AND CAROL'S LABOUR OF LOVE

As soon as I began reading this book on the website I was hooked; as hooked as we all were watching Stephen Roche catch up with Pedro Delgado at the top of La Plagne in stage 21 of the 1987 Tour or Greg LeMond's 8 second Tour victory over Laurent Fignon on the Champs-Elyses in 1989. These Tour memories are but two of many contained within this wonderful read. As I skimmed through the book, page by page, I knew I just had to have it and so I bought it. The book is an absolute treasure chest of all you ever needed to know about the most gruelling, and yet with it the most captivating, bike race in the world. It is such a joy to read because Bill and Carol have obviously completed what must have been a labour of love for them. And if the writing, which is superb, is not worth the purchase price alone then the photographs are breathtaking. I only hope my forthcoming "Tour de France Miscellany" (Carlton Publishing) is as good as "The Story of the Tour de France".

The Three Dogs were big and muscular, there was Bruno, Kalia but that they look and sound cool. The book gets more better towards the end when the three dogs won the sledding contest at Colorada. Kalia is a husky, which is a type of a wolf. Bruno looks like a black lab mixed with husky. I wish I could have these dogs from The Three Dog Winter. This is a good book. I will rate it a five.

This is a thrilling winter story that took my breath away as I read page after page of this exciting novel. As Scott and his family are trying to recover from the death of his father, Scott's mom seems to immediately re-marry again. Scott and his dad had both loved sled dog racing. In the new home with more siblings, Scott wonders if he'll ever be able to race a great team like his dad, since he only has one dog. Especially with this new family and new home.

Trail Riding by Rhonda hart Poe is more then just what the title indicates.
She takes you from getting ready to ride through the Trail Rider's Survival Guide and much more in the process. With only five years involved with horses and a few hundred miles on trails she leads you through every phase of trail horsemanship.

There is not adequate space here to pass along how much I learned and will use in the future "on the trail". Ms Poe covers everything from tack and gear for the trail to preparing you and your horse, whether you ride for pleasure or in competition.

Married to a true "Horse-Lady" with more then 20,000 miles on trails I suspected it was my inexperience until after she read the book. She enjoyed it and indicated that she had picked up a lot of tips that she had never thought of. That's from a woman who has a bookshelf full of books on trail riding.

The book was very educational and fun to read with a lot of information for beginners and experienced riders alike. I have no doubt that I will be a better trail riders after my first read and intend to read it a few more times. I would highly recommend it for anyone who wants to be a better horseman, whether on trails or around the pasture.

UNBELIEVABLY INTRIGUING

Many months ago, I purchased "The Ultimate Guide to Handicapping the Horses". I'm Canadian, and grew up loving harness racing more than the runners. The title caught my eye, along with the last name of the author for I can vividly remember a driver by the same name. I'm not sure if there is any relation, but this book was extremely informative and INCREDIBLY INTRIGUING! I haven't received "The Tuttle Way II" yet, but I'm greatly anticipating learning more from this amazingly talented vanity writer.

Good Luck to all!

I'm rapidly becoming quite the fan of this relative unknown: Joseph J. Tuttle. It's quite obvious that he was not an English major (if he went to college at all), but his insightful nature and his ability to write as though he is talking to you I find rather comforting. I've since sent Mr. Tuttle an e-mail stating that he has a duplicate paragraph in his book, that needs to be rectified. His response was quite timely, in telling me that he was away in Europe for the soccer tournament and he told me that this would be recitifed within a week. This is the 3rd book of his that I've purchased (either through Amazon or another outlet), and I'm just unbelievably impressed by his strategies and techniques. This may sound corny, but he has certainly enlightened me a great deal with the three books of his that I've read (his baseball handicapping book, his football handicapping book and now this horse handicapping book). Apparently, he also has a creative side, for I'm about to order his novella "Trainer". In closing I'd like to say that I think it's a shame that this man has to "self-publish" and doesn't have the benefit of proofreaders and editors at his disposal. But, I'm sure somebody is going to eventually pick him up and one day these minor-typo-filled books will become collector's items. Good luck to all!

(Her review IS completely inaccurate and despicable!)

And for the record, it has AMAZED me over the years how
writer's of handicapping books have misspelled the word "intrinsic",
by spelling it "intrensic", for YEARS!!!! Yet this man who writes first drafts in
purple crayon, gets it correct?! This women's review was/is completely
defaming, and it's a shame Mr. Tuttle cannot sue on the basis of defamation
of character! At the very least, her "review" in slanderous.

God, where should I begin. First off, I think it should be noted that the
real/true beauty of being a "Vanity Author" (as Mr. Tuttle probably is) comes
from the fact that there aren't sixteen different versions floating around.
Think about it.... Do you really think that the likes of some of your more notable
horse handicapping writer's don't actually need a lot of help with grammar
and punctuation? Joseph Tuttle is clearly a man doing this on his own, in an
effort to better serve us! HE IS A PROFESSIONAL GAMBLER..... www.winners57.com

He makes no bones about it, he is a horseman first and foremost, and his
horsemanship perspective has taught me more than I had ever dreamed imaginable. His methodologies are insightful and stimulating.
I purchased this book (at a different site) some two months ago, and have had
some incredible results. As far as I'm concerned, for someone write a such
disparaging remarks they must have an axe to grind!!! Ms. Shawda Brown....
You should be ashamed of yourself! Didn't anyone ever teach you the old saying....
"If you don't have anything nice to say, you shouldn't say anything at all."?
In closing, I want to leave all of you with a wonderful excerpt from "The Tuttle Way".

Excerpt from this book......

".....This is also how you can determine how strong of a "brush" a horse might have,
which can ultimately lead to more winners and a better overall opinion
(for yourself to develop), of horseflesh.

{What I like to do looks something like this...}

:22 (for the horse that led after the opening quarter)
:23 (my "horse of interest" was sitting 3rd, 5 lengths off the leader)

:45(the time that the leader of said race hit the half at)
:45.1 (my horse was still sitting 3rd, but now only one length off the lead)

At this point you need to calculate three of four highly intrinsic variables:......"

I've purchased a lot of different handicapping books over the years and consider myself an advanced handicapper, but after reading this book I'll definately be studying the racing form a little more in depth to say the least. You can tell this book has been written by a real horse bettor and not some ghost writer which is also a plus.

Definitely some helpful tips on spotting the horses that seem to consistently come in the money. I feel confident that I'll always be getting something back from the window - even if its not my primary bet. And my success on my primary bets has increased markedly as well.

For the price of a couple of races, this was a good investment.
