Horror Books

I have read this book so many time and it still doesn't get old.

I have always been an avid fan of LJ Smith, so I was not surprised that this series was awesome. Her descriptions are always so clear (and so strange) that you can almost envision the people and things in front of you (unlike everyone else though I loved Rob more than Gabriel). As an adult now, I still read her books (although I have yet to find the last book of the Nightworld Series). A great read for anyone!!!!!!!

Whilst LJ Smith's books are a good read, I do get narked with the characters sometimes. Most of the lead characters are too nice and any 'bad' characters are always gothy and into heavy metal. Goodie is sickly sweet and oh so nice blonde, baddie is hot but very nasty brunette (see how easy it is to follow the plot read the secret circle if you don't believe me) But back to this, this had a great starting point, but lost the plot slighty. LJS seemed to be really hitting us on the head with how 'bad' Gabriel was and how nice everyone else was, and of course the main female is so understanding and desired by all. Liked it but not as much as the Forbidden Game.

I had read several of L.J.Smith's Nightworld series when I read Dark Visions, and I was immediately spellbound. The characters were all well-developed and very appealing - you cared what happened to them. Of course, Gabriel was my favorite. There's something so appealing about a bad boy in need of salvation. I read the whole thing through in one sitting and then sat down and read it through again. I would recommend it for anyone interested in the unknown, in coming-of-age books, or just interested in a good read.

This book is by FAR my favorite book of all time. Kaitlyn Fairchild is my new favorite female character. Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings... Yeah, they don't hold a candle to L.J. Smith's Dark Visions Collector's Edition.
Personally, I am AMAZED that this book doesn't get more recognition than it currently does. I would enjoy it more than life itself if this book became a movie. I'm actually telling all my friends about it.
I am not much of a reader... at all... But this book... This book made me cry, made me laugh, made me think hard on certain subjects... everything. I loaned my copy to a friend in hopes of getting her hooked on it too.
I have read and re-read this book, time and time again, for years. It never gets old. Smith's vivid descriptions of surroundings and characteristics give me a good mental image of all her characters.
I am seriously thinking about getting her other books. In fact, I will.
Read this book. If you think you knew what a good book is... you haven't read anything until you read this.

The impact of this novel is materially diminished by its reliance on obsolete paradigms of the previous century. Science seeks to reanimate creatures of the past not with incantations, wall inscriptions and the usual mumbo gumbo of witchcraft and sorcery, but with the information storing capacity of DNA macromolecules and cellular implants. In Lovecraft's works, as in certain scriptural references, matter is endowed only with minimal capacities to create the inorganic realm - but living creatures need to have the influence of nonmaterial spiritual influences from BEYOND. Lovecraft hints at methods and materials used in the "experiments" he describes, but relies too heavily on "fancy" language to create atmosphere...a practice losing its impact after frequent repetition. This novel also develops much too slowly......the material would have fit more comfortably in a short story or a novelette. In addition, I think H. P. might have started writing a handbook for tour guides of Providence, R. I. and took a sudden turn on Route 2 in Cranston. The thought is amusing to this writer to consider the REAL Providence and its appeal - consisting until recent times - mainly of sidewalk art of prostrate bodies, being accosted by pan-handling bums, or rats scurrying about freely in daylight along the canal. In spite of these comments I would recommend this book. Read this volume and then go for a walk in the environs described therein ---watch out for "incomplete" rats......

If you want really classic Lovecraft at the top of his form, then this novel is it. It is a good, tight, driven read- except for the extensive prose tour of his beloved old Providence near the beginning. Yet, even this detailed introduction helps to weave an unmatched atmosphere that draws you deeply into Lovecraft's world. This is an ode to Providence, and to those unobtrusive and unlikely heroes that would keep it safe from cosmic evil.

Lovecraft carries us from colonial days to the "modern" 1920's in this tale. We are introduced to the hidden brotherhood of dark magicians and necromancers- those to seek to wield unnatural power from beyond the grave and beyond the stars. So much concentrated occult information, or rather enticing hints of such information, is packed into the narrative. Mystery within mystery unfolds. Yet, it is rather ordinary men that are called upon to confront this inconceivable evil, even though it threatens their very sanity.

Besides being an extremely well written tale of supernatural suspense it also serves as a teaching tale. There is madness out of time and a horror from beyond the spheres that threatens to entrap and destroy the unwary. Do not call up what ye lack the power to put down. Upon this depends more than can be put into words- all civilization, all natural law, perhaps the fate of the solar system and the universe. Perhaps even more than this- all because one fool opened a door and there was no one there with the knowledge to close it...

This is the type of story that you sit back and imerse yourself in the setting. With each new tid bit of information the horror of Joseph Curwen becomes clearer and clearer. The final chapter however sent chills down my spine, as Dr Willet searches through Curwen's undergroud, antedeluvian laboratory. The dank putrid odors, the slime green walls, and the horrific wailing from the darkness... the build up is phenominal, and the pay off will have you sleeping with your lights on!

Great read, you will go back to it again and again.

At 48,000 words, this is the longest tale that H.P. Lovecraft ever wrote. It is also his best.

This novel has both good plotting and an otherworldly atmosphere that pervades the book. The setting is 1920's New England where there was a revival in interest in the occult. However, the key to the tale is the 18th Century New England scene that Lovecraft had a lifetime interest in.

The character of Charles Dexter Ward was based on Lovecraft himself: a lonely intellectual who was an antiquarian who detested the Industrial Revolution. Ward's research into the occult leads to the reincarnation of one of his ancestors who in turn hatches a plot with both Ward and one of Ward's friends for a mass resurrection of the dead who would become mindless zombies dedicated to both the destruction of heavy industry in America as well as the forced expulsion, if not mass murder, of the Roman Catholic immigrants who Lovecraft detested so much from America.

The Case of Charles Dexter Ward is a fantasy/horror novel that tells you a lot about its author. H.P. Lovecraft was a self-styled aristocrat from a decadent Old Money family who bitterly hated the Roman Catholic Church and especially the Irish and Italian immigrants who by 1928, when this novel was first published, had already assumed a position of political power at the expense of the WASP elite that Lovecraft was a member of. Clearly, The Case of Charles Dexter Ward was reflective of Lovecraft's religious bigotry and his hateful tendencies towards certain ethnic and religious groups. It should come as no surprise that during the 1930's, Lovecraft frequently praised Adolf Hitler and the Nazis.

The Case of Charles Dexter Ward is a uniquely powerful and compelling work by a master of horror fantasy.

Charles Dexter Ward is a young man in Providence, RI who is fascinated by antiquities --- too fascinated, perhaps. He becomes obsessed with an ancestor, an alleged warlock named Joseph Curwen who escaped persecution in Salem over 200 years before and fled to Providence. A unusually long-lived ancestor, I might add.

If you aren't used to reading Lovecraft, or other writers of the same time period, the language and writing style might be a little tough at first, but it is well worth getting into. Lovecraft leaves a lot to the imagination of the reader --- a device that works quite well in this story.

This is one of my favorite novellas --- actually, one of my favorite stories, even. I first read when I was in high school, and I have re-read it every few years ever since. I re-read it again a couple of days ago and I still love it. This is Lovecraft at his best.

This is the favorite Goosebumps story of a 10-year old relative so I wanted to get her her own copy. She rates it highly.
A story of a young girl's experience at summer camp. Her peer problems seemed bad enough for her to think of faking her own death, but then her plan backfires and she almost drowns. Then she starts seeing things that cause her to act strange and increases her peer problems.
It is not my own interest and I feel kids today have enough strangeness in their lives without these scary things to wonder about, but perhaps they appreciate the safeness of their own world after reading about a more scary one.

Unlike most kids, I didn't start reading the goosebump books at a young age. I had book-a-phobia! I was twelve when I first read this book and that's when I decided to read the series. It's a surprising and unpredictable book with great charectors. I love how Sarah is a little scared of camp, and I can relate. But my favorite character is Della, the ghost. I like the "ghost world" that Sarah temporarily goes to, and how the whole world was very interesting. The people, places, and situations were very cool! I couldn't put the book down! Read it in one night! (That's a record for me.)I couldn't find any flaws with this book and the awsome, suspenceful, scaryness of the ending. I don't want to spoil it for you, but i think you should read it!

These books are helping my grandson learn the enjoyment of reading. He was having a hard time, but these books hold his attention and he really looks forward to getting a new one in the series.

This was an eerie tale of a haunted camp where a girl, Sarah Maas is having a hard time, and she pretends to drown, but only finds herself haunted by a ghostly girl, named Della, who Sarah believes is a girl who drowned.

I was pulled into this book as I was reading it. It is an eerie tale that gave me shivers as I was reading it. I loved this book and thought that it was one of, if not THE best of the books in the series. Anybody who loves a book for children and who loves a good thrill should buy this book because it is a great thrill.

I am totally fumed that they didn't make an episode out of this masterpiece of a Goosebumps book!!

This book is about a girl named Laura who goes to sleep away camp. She hears a girl singing in the woods every night. When no one is around the girl who sings in the woods tries to run Laura over with a boat. Will she escape from the girl in the woods? Read this story to find out.

Night of the Living Dummy is a Goosebumps book by R.L Stine. It's a great book because it's kind of scary, because a girl named Lindy and her sister Kris were walking around the block and they swear they saw a kid hanging out of the dumpster. As Lindy walked closer she realized that it was a dummy. So when she got home she named the dummy Slappy. That night it came to life and started to cause trouble. I recommend this book third through fifth grade, because it would be too frightening. I give this book 5 starS because I like scary fiction stories.

This book isn't to bad. it was very enjoyable. It's a good book for kids 12 and over. I love R.L. Stiens's books whaen i was a kid. I still will read goosebumps when i can't find nothing else. This is probably the best kid's sereis books out there. Night Of The Living Dummy was pretty intense. It Is a good book.

Wow, this book was awsome really awsome toatally triple awsome! I thought this was better than Night of the living dummy 2! I wonder why it shows Slappy on the cover of the book but the main ventriloquist dummy is Mr. Wood which on the other hand isn't as cool and evil as Slappy. YOU HAVE TO READ THIS BOOK!!!

The books in the Goosebumps series regularly seem to take the vein of a morality tale (of a twisted sort) where one virtue, evil, personality flaw, or issue is taken up as the focus of the story, and Night of the Living Dummy is no exception. The order of the day here is competition...in this volume we meet twins Lindy and Kris Powell who are constantly competing, arguing, trying out do, out wit, and one-up one another. Their parents are frazzled and fed up with these beautiful twins who seem to frequently cross the line into cruelty and viciousness, and often behaving without sympathy toward one another and others.

As we join them, the twins are exploring the house across the way from theirs when Lindy discovers a ventriloquist dummy in the construction dumpster...even better he appears to be in excellent shape. To Kris' horror, Lindy keeps the dummy, which Kris initially distains as stupid, gross, and boring. Shortly after finding him, Lindy manages to gain some skill and when her act becomes popular with their classmates...popular enough to get her some gigs doing birthday parties with her act, Kris decides that she too MUST have a dummy. Her parents initially rebuke her, dummies are expensive and try to get the girls to share which outrages Lindy...she becomes quite cruel toward her sister calling her a copy cat and really wanting this one thing for herself.

When their father manages to conveniently stumble upon a second dummy in a second hand shop for a good price, it seems like the problem is solved...but Lindy is still angry at her sister for trying to steal her thunder and begins to pose the dummy so that it appears to be alive, frightening her sister terribly...when the secret is revealed, Kris is crushed...but shortly after the dummy DOES come to life and the twins are left without their parents support (they are just fed up with talk and whining about the dummies to hear a single thing more about them). Will the girls be able to stop Mr. Wood? Will he make them his slaves? You'll have to read to find out...what you get is always different than what you expect with these stories, and Night of the Living Dummy is no exception, it does have a signature "got ya" moment at the end.

Overall, Night of the Living Dummy is well written and the characters are simple but adequately written. The girls are sympathetic in some instances and not in others...there are times in the story when you think they are getting what they deserve for the way they behaved...but in the end, you want them to pull out of it and save themselves from Mr. Wood. At the very end, just when you think it's all going to be ok, boo...an abrupt shock at the end and the story is over, leaving the reader wondering how the girls will get out of their predicament...this one reeks of sequel, which I understand there are several of. I give it five stars, this is much better written than some of the other books I've read in the series and for taking something that's already kind of creepy (the dummy) and making it horrific several times over.

Lindy and her sister Kris discover an old dummy in a dumpster walking home one day. The dummy is in perfectly good shape and they can't understand why somebody threw the dummy away. Lindy decides to keep it so she names it Slappy. Lindy tries Slappy out on two of the kids her and Kris babysit. Slappy is an instant success. Kris becomes extremly jealous so Lindy decides to keep him. Lindy and Kris's dad buys Kris a dummy of her own which upsets Lindy causing her to play a mean practical joke on Kris. But soon after Kris gets her dummy, strange things start happening. No way it could be Mr. Wood (Kris' dummy) right?

This monster book is fun, not scary at all. It tells about all the loving things Mama Monster does for her Monster children. When I was an elementary school librarian I used it for Story Time. And now my grandchildren--ages 2 and 4, love this book too!

My kids (ages 3-7) all love this book. It has a great rhythm and after reading it regularly for five years, they still giggle through the entire book. Because of that, we have given this book to many friends who have loved it as much as us.

I bought this because my son has been waking up scared of "things" in his room at night. He has been waking up a lot less lately, since we started reading this and another book. I really think this among other things has helped. It insinuates that monsters are scared of little boys and girls which is just what he needed to hear!! It is also very cute and makes monsters seem just like people!

My little boy is 19 months old and this is one of his favorite bedtime stories. The illustrations are bright and colorful and the story makes us laugh every time we read it!

I loved this book and read it to my precious grandson, Connor. The book is written in rhyme and it is very sweet and interesting to kids.

Follow the further adventures of Sita the oldest vampire on the planet.

After breaking a promise and making her partner a vampire, Sita and Ray try to live a somewhat normal life. Until they hear of some murders in LA.

It seems that someone is killing people an terrible ways. Dismamberment, limbs torn off, and in some cases even drained comepletly of blood. In otherwords the killer is making it look as if another vampire is loose on the world.

Did Sita succeed in destroying her maker or is he alive and finding ways of making her pay?

Is this some new sort of vampire? If so, from whence did it come?

Can it be stopped before the world knows about vampires?

To find out you will have to read this book.

I especially liked...

How the book explained they new vampire. Normaly the peson is a real creep, but with superpowers he is even more of a menace. Quite scary acually.

The beginning starts with Sita stating that she is not afraid of blood. What she is afraid of is what it can do.

I relly do not like reading but this book got my attention because it is trilling I think it is thrilling besause the vampires are relly strong,fast, smart, and they can hear and see relly good beter the any thing.

Absolutely love this book, and the entire "The Last Vampire" series in general. Following Sita's journey is an exciting and wonderful adventure, and this book is no exception. Sita is 5,000 years old and thought all vampires (aside from herself and her lover Ray) were gone, until a series of unusal murders force her to realize she was mistaken. She must meet this new foe, destroy him, and try to do so without destroying herself. A great (and quick) read.

This book is great. It's a nice sequel to #1, though it does become boring in some points.. There's small sub-stories that get told inside by the characters that dont really seem like they need to be there, but nonetheless, they add to the overall effectiveness of the plot.

I read this whole book last night. I just couldn't put it down! It was about a 3 1/2 hour read without too many breaks.. I found it took me 4 chapters to realize i had to go to the restroom and to actually get up to go.

The bad guy's mother is a bit off her rocker, being as old as she is.. Really sick minded, its no wonder that the boy turned out the way he was.

Anyway, it was a good book and i just couldnt put it down. I reccommend this read to anyone who is a fan of Christopher Pike. :)

Ray is adjusting to being a vampire. He is depressed about having to sever contact with his family and friends, and appalled at having to drink human blood. But Ray doesn't have too much time to figure things out. There has been a series of brutal murders in LA. Sita knows a vampire is responsible.
Sita and Ray are going to LA to investigate and look for the one who is creating vampires. The First Vampire, Yaksha, is supposed to be dead. Even if he survived the explosion at Sita's home, he swore a vow to God not to create any more vampires, and to destroy all other vampires. Sita has not made any more. So who is making the vampires?

A new character comes in: FBI agent Joel Gray. In charge of the murder investigation, he zeroes in on Alisa. Will she have to kill this well-meaning man if he gets to close to the truth?

This story is a better read than the first one in the series. A lot more action for one thing, a compelling enemy, and less of Sita musing on what a hottie she is. Pikes writing is a little better. Still, Pike throws in gems like "I like horny men. I feel they are true to their nature." Riiiiight.

I found this book in an old bookstore by the beach and thought, action fantasy, why not try it? So far it has to be one of my top favorite books. I plan to read the whole series even though now they're alot harder to find.

On a scale of 1 to 5, I give it a 7!!

The Broken Sky series attracted the attention of my 12 year old non reader. Finally a series of books he would read and continue to read. He is on book 6 now! Thank You Chris Wooding.

Broken Sky is one of the best series I have ever read. After getting this book I was hooked I knew I had to have them all. It is filled with action I will tell you only this it is about Two twins whos father died at the hands of their king

The Broken Sky series is the best young adult series yet! I am an upper level freshmen in high school so the series is a bit beneath me, however the battles in the books still captivate me. It's an easy read and each book should take only a couple of hours with the exception being the last book, book seven, which is sort of a combination of books 7, 8, and 9. The writer, Chris Wooding, has stopped the series ( a dissapointment to his fans) and even stopped writing totally! A shame it is, but maybe he'll start writing again soon. I know I speak for many others when I say I hope he does!

This is the first of the seven broken sky books. The twins, Ryushi and Kia, have lived their sixteen-winter life shelted from the outside world. Each of them have six spirt stones(stones that give the bearer magical powers and are placed by a deliverer in a ceremony called a pah'nu'kah) placed down their spine. Ryushi has sky blue stones of force, while Kia has stones with the power of the earth. They each have spent their years sharpening thier skills to prepare for when their father lets them into the outside world when they come of age(18 winters). One day their father, Banto, returns from Tusami city with their 18 winter brother, Takami, after Banto introduces Takami to the outside world. But Banto brings them a little suprise, an 8 winter child named Elani. Just days later, Ryushi's curiosity and impatiance gets the best of him. But when he asks his father about the truth, Banto just makes him promise to guard Elani with his life. Soon after, their home, Osaka Stud, gets attaked. Ryushi keeps his promise and guards Elani from a odd mummy-like creature. Ryushi and Kia manage to escape the destruction of Osaka Stud on a dragon-like wyvern. But as they head towards Tusami city to find Banto's friends, something is on Ryushi's mind. The mummy like creature called his father a traitor. But they always were told King Macaan was the best thing that happened to the dominions. Something is brewing, and there's only one way to find out what. For the survivors of Osaka Stud, it's onward to Tusami City to find some awnsers.

Tryst

I really was being to think that I was the only one who had read and been haunted by this book. I, like many of the other reviewers, read Tryst in my teens and it has remained in my memory for over 40 years. One of the only other books to stay with me in this way is Precious Bane by Mary Webb; which was also written in the 1st half of the 20th century. Both are stories that touch your heart and come alive in your imagination.

I was surprised to see how many of us had read this book in high school and never forgot it. And, how many of us still LOVED it. It's timeless. Of the thousands of books I've read through the years I really only remembered this one with such a desire to READ IT AGAIN. The first read was from the library. I couldn't remember the title or author. I've watched used books for years without success. Thanks to amazon and their search category!! I was able to find it under "ghost, Hilary". The recent read was just as sweet as the first one years ago. I was really afraid that it was teenage book that would be disappointing now. It wasn't!!!!

This has been one of my favorite books for over 50 yrs. Everytime I have loaned it to family or friends it never comes back. They love it also. It is such a good story. Sabrina is very believeable although many young people today might find it hard to believe that young girls were like that at one time. Hilary has always been my ideal of a romantic man. How they fall in love and how things are "set straight" for them is a great story. I have read this book once a year for almost all the years since I first read it and it never fails to make me cry at the end. With happiness I might add! I recommend it for any romantic and for all young girls.

Tryst has "haunted" me for 30 years...I'm not a Harlequin Romance type, but my librarian recommended it as a "ghost story" when I was 12, and I've remembered it ever since. The book "Portrait of Jenny", by Robert Nathan, is the only one that even comes close and is one of my all-time favorite movies. I can't believe that Hollywood has overlooked Tryst. I am thrilled to find a copy and to read the reviews from those who were likewise affected by this beautiful book.

Dick Briefer is an under-appreciated genius and this is some of his best work. My only gripe is that it's not in color.

How many men and monsters must Frankenstein crush, kill, or destroy before the he can find peace? Well, in Briefer's landmark golden age horror comic, a whole hell-of-a lot! Get this book and you will see the monster cut a blood path into the annals of horror comic history.

If you combined the scripting talents of Stan Lee with the visionary artistic abilities of Jack Cole you would have Dick Briefer. So why have you never heard of him? Briefer had the great misfortune of working for comic companies that went belly-up in the late fifties. If only Dick, and his famous rendition of the Frankenstein Monster, made their way to the offices of DC or Marvel Comics instead of an advertising agency, silver age comic who have been vastly improved.

Briefer's golden age, super-vicious reboot of Mary Shelley's mangled and maligned creation is hands down the best adaptation of Frankenstein for the four color format. If you thought EC comics were the pinnacle of 1950s horror comics, I implore you to purchase this collection and see if Dick Briefer's superb artwork and story plotting might change your mind.

Very few comic book writers, past or present, can successfully inject so much original concepts into their stories while simultaneously keeping the integral feel of an iconic character (in this case, the Frankenstein Monster) than Dick Briefer. Ghouls, mummies, zombies, werewolves, hunchbacks, man-eating plants and giant dinos all have places of honor among these tales, creating a visual thrillride for any luck reader who was wise enough to purchase this wonderful collection.

My three year old daughter loves this book, and we love reading it to her! It is such an exciting adventure!

This is one of the earlier Berenstain Bear books, and it shows. The bears are less stylized and cutesy than the bears in the newer books, and the story is halfway between an early reader and the newer, longer read-alouds they do now.

It's a cute little story about three cubs going out with a light, a stick, and a rope to explore. Of course, they lose all three items and run screaming home to mom - and with good reason, that spooky old tree is *really* spooky.

There are only a few words per page, with a basic vocabulary, so it's great for early readers.

We've always read this book with our kids- the whole extended family does. It is a wonderful book. And because of the repetition in it, kids can read it themselves from young age. The illustrations are fantastic, and just scary enough.

I had this book when I was little but over the years it "disappeared". When I saw it available on Amazon, I had to get it! I'm creating a collection of books I read as a child so I can pass them on to my children. I've always enjoyed books by the Berenstains! Their illustrations are very vivid and charming. The storylines in the books are very easy for a child to follow. You should also check out Richard Scarry's children's books.

My husband and I both loved this book as children. I was pleasantly surprised to see that they're still being made.
