This seems to be a great book! I bought it for class to learn more about current rules and laws in contempoary special education. It is very thorough! The only reason why I am giving it 4 instead of 5 stars is because I didn't receive a CD with mine, and I think it is supposed to accompany it.

This is the book every special education major needs to know the things that are important for your teaching. It covers many disabilities and many of the questions on the Praxis are covered in this book.

I didn't get the CD with mine. I didn't feel I needed it. I had a 50/50 consensus that it was important. There were some things in it that could help you practice, so if you are not sure of a lot of things in special ed, get the CD. My teacher required it and I never used it and someone told me they never opened theirs up. Its a matter of preference.

As a distinguished member of this wonderful and exciting society, I have enduleged myself, the SHARK, into 'Bulls' deepest fantasies. The Spirit of comradery displayed within the sacred 3rd floor of the Lodge are unmatched anywhere on this earth, or in the ocean for that matter. Robert Tarleton, known as BULL to those who know him extremley well, has preserved an age old tradition in this book about the TRUE spirit of friendship. All members are upstanding citizens, and thru my experience with this book, and of course Bull, I the Shark will have memories of KA that no man or aquatic marine life can match. I send BULL the heartiests of K++S's on a Book-JOB well done. Deeply Penetrated, The Shark

Yes, the Spirit of KA is indeed a trend-setter - it revolutionizes the fraternal history genre, heretofore dominated by obscure esoterica, by enabling a shift to a more robust paradigm, marked by terse yet erudite explateration.

Also, having had the misfortune to happen upon the character known as "Steve Davis", I would urge all to take his ramblings with a grain of salt. I, for one, highly doubt that he has even cracked open The Spirit of KA, let alone put forth the multitude of hours required to savor its magnificence.

RIGHT!!! A great history of the Kappa Alpha Society.

A well-written history of the Kappa Alpha Literary Society. Mr. Torelton is a great man, loved by KA. I have read this book 60 or 70....thousand times, and love all the history and tradition behind the society which was founded in 1825. Torelton does a wonderful job showing the evolution of the society over the past 160 years.

The Kappa Alpha Society is approaching its 175th birthday as the oldest Greek letter social fraternity. The Spirit of KA is a great tribute to the great men (and women of late) who have kept a proud tradition alive despite some recent challenges and competition for time and dollars from our members. The book took forever for completion (almost 10 years) but the result and the many fascinating stories, facts, pictures and songs were well worth the wait. The Society is indebted the "Bull" Tarleton who probably knows more about the Kappa Alpha Society than anyone in our proud history spanning 3 different centuries. Fraternity fans may want to visit the KA 175th anniversary celebration at Union College on September 22 and 23. This is where the whole tradition started in 1825.

This book showed me the possibility that my own cocker spaniel has a bit of another type of spaniel in him. This book is extremely precise and detailed for each of the spaniel breeds. I personally found it to be of enourmous help.

One of the things I love about this dog book is the clear personality and temperament profiles of the different Spaniels. For example, the author tells the reader about the Welsh Springer Spaniel: "Totally loyal to their person, Welshies will follow their owners from room to room, overseeing household chores or listening halfheartedly to telephone conversations." The author continues: "Many are inclined to accompany their owners into the bathroom, often leaning protectively on the shower door or poking their heads past the shower curtain."
The author also describes the different Spaniels' energy levels and she gives amusing anecdotes of their playful antics.
I wish the photographs were bigger, since I enjoy them so much.
For dog lovers there are never enough good photographs and heart-warming anecdotes in these dog books, the more, the merrier!

As a child, I had an English Springer Spaniel. Ms. Spiotta DiMare described the breed's lively personality to a "T." I loved the photos in this book, as well as the completeness of the information for each breed. It's a wonderful resource for anyone who loves spaniels!

Wow, this book was a Godsend! With my kids clamoring for a puppy and my total lack of knowledge about breeds, this book gave me much useful information leading towards our decision to go with a field spaniel with its laidback, easy-going nature. I found the breed comparison charts really helpful -- they brought up useful considerations I wouldn't have factored in ordinarily. My kids loved the many color pictures.

I read a book called Stained. This was a really good book. It is about a girl, Jocelyn, who has been friends with a boy, Gabe, for fourteen years. One day he comes up missing. No one has seen him and no one has heard from him. Joss, Jocelyn, is having so many problems between Gabe's missing and her boyfriend Benny. Her boyfriend wants to break up with her. There are search parties going on for Gabe. Joss is just so confused right now. Joss goes out looking for him in the woods. She finds Gabe but he doesn't want anyone to know where he is. She goes back the next day, but he is gone. Through out the whole book, Joss goes back and forth through each chapter to tell about the past and why things are the way they are now.
I really liked this book. I liked when Joss found Gabe out in those woods. I also liked that Joss and Benny got back together. I didn't like it that Gabe was gone.
I would recommend this book to girls especially because it is more about a girl. People who like stories about girls who fall in love would love this book like I did. This book is for people who like stories that switch back and forth.

A quietly powerful, expertly told tale about an insecure teenage waitress and three men whose lives collide with hers. Seventeen-year-old Jocelyn McGuire is 17, a lapsed Catholic in a community of believers, working in a small-town New Hampshire diner in 1975. Her childhood friend-turned-nemesis, Gabe, is missing. Her on-again, off-again boyfriend, Benny, breaks up with her on the advice of the local priest, who holds a creepy sway over his male, teenaged parishioners. Jocelyn's narration alternates between flashbacks of her history with Gabe, a past that includes a childhood sexual assault, and a present tense account of his disappearance in which she actively puzzles out what's happened. The ending is triumphant with Jocelyn realizing she's not to blame for the way Gabe or Benny have treated her, and with her taking bold action against Father Warren - a move that puts this girl with the "stained soul" squarely on the side of angels. Excellent, finely wrought fiction that will feel relevant and immediate to today's readers.

The characters in this book are completely haunting. Days after finishing the book, I find myself thinking about all of them--the experiences they shared, the decisions they made, the truths they learned. This is one of those books you can't put down, because even when you do, you keep thinking about it. A 5-star winner.

I read STAINED in one sitting, and as soon as I finished it, I started it all over again! While the suspenseful story keeps you turning the pages (Where is Gabe? Why did he disappear?), Jacobson's unpretentious, pitch-perfect writing is making its way to a deep place within you - a place that connects you to all the characters in this book and keeps you thinking about them well after the last page is turned.

I think this book was written badly and is not very user friendly. My professor has agreed that this text is not the best out there. I have to make my own outlines to understand what is being said in this very dense and hard to read/comprehend text. The only reason I got it was because it was required for the class. Had I known how this text would read, I would have opted for another text.

Outstanding intro to basic stats

I thought this was an outstanding intro to basic stats - it does a great job presenting the intuition behind most of the important basic concepts in stats, and I also loved the articulate and flowing style of the text. Very light on math, too, so a great text for those less quantitatively inclined souls out there who would still like to get a solid grasp of basic stats.
One great addition to the book would be a list of websites that have interactive stats demos, which I think are a great tool to help better understanding and to develop intuition. (One such site is explorelearning.com, which has pretty decent demos on several of the main concepts, but in general you can google [the concept you're looking for]+demo to get more demos (some better than others) on specific concepts). On second thought, this may be not a very realistic suggestion considering how often new websites pop up and old ones go dead, but I thought I'd throw it out there anyway.

Presents Statistics Conceptually

This is by far the best introductory text to statistics for students in the behavioral sciences I have come across.

The conceptual layout makes this textbook especially engaging. Unlike most statistics textbooks this one presents more difficult concepts in a step-by-step manner, which allows for better understanding.

The authors have done a superb job of explaining the logic behind the statistical procedures. This is important, for without this understanding one will likely misapply statistics and/or misread statistics.

In short, here one finds not only an introduction to descriptive and inferential statistics for behavioral scientists, but also a text that will give the reader a firm grounding in the logic behind statistics.

Well done!

As I read this book three things became apparent: one, the authors know their subject inside and out; second, they understand their beginning audience; last and most importantly they know how to teach. I strongly recommend this well written book to anyone needing to learn stats.

I am Mrs Townhill's daughter, aged 10, and have just finished reading this book.

This book is about the life of Jim Jarvis, a street boy in Victorian London. After his father died his life was hard and following the death of his mother and loosing his sisters, his life got worse until he met 'Barney', now known as Dr Barnardo, who looked after him.

This story is based on the true story of the start of Dr Barnardo's homes.

The book is exciting but sad in many places so I have only given it four stars, but I would recommend everyone to read it to realise how bad life was not very long ago in England and to realise that there are still children living like that in places around the world today.

Mum adds . . . I enjoyed this book too. It is well written for children. It is not too sentimental, neither does it hide the facts of the rough life of the poor, without being too frightening. It is gripping and keeps you caring all the way. An excellent read.

The three books which have influenced my understanding of effective studying during the early years!

1) Student Success Secrets (1979), by Eric Jensen;
2) You Can Succeed: The Ultimate Study Guide for Students (1979), by Eric Jensen;
3) B's & A's in 30 Days: Strategies for Better Grades in College (1994), by Eric Jensen;

Over the last two decades & within the realm of study strategies, I have amassed a vast repertoire of books & resources on the subject. They cover a very comprehensive & broad academic range from young children through teen/college students all the way to university/matured students. This is attributed to my deep personal interest in understanding the `concept of studying' as well as my relentless search for the `study smart process'. Many of the ideas & techniques have been adapted & put to work in my own public workshops as well as in collaborative school projects.

Amidst the many books I have owned & read about the study process, only a few of them have been my personal favourites. They include: Walter Pauk's 'How to Study in College' (1974), Adam Robinson's `What Smart Students Know: Maximum Grades. Optimum Learning, Minimum Time' (1993) & William Armstrong's `Study Is Hard Work: The Most Accessible and Lucid Text Available on Acquiring & Keeping Study Skills Through a Lifetime' (1995).

However, there are three books which have influenced my understanding during the very early years. They are listed above.

The decisive factor in acquiring all the three early books, by Eric Jensen, more or less lies in his impressive track record in education. As a teacher in the middle schools, he co-founded the internationally-acclaimed SuperCamp, a residential summer camp for teens, pre-teens and college-age students, with Bobbi dePorter in the early eighties.

[In the late seventies, Bobbi studied with Dr Georgi Lozanov, father of accelerated learning, & applied the innovative methods to her highly-successful, but now-defunct, Burklyn Business School. Seeing an urgent need to teach school children how to learn, she later applied the techniques in SuperCamp, a youth program. In the years since, SuperCamp has helped over 45,000 students re-learn how they learn & reshape how they live their lives.]

Eric left a few years later to create Turning Point for Teachers, a training outfit applying the innovative accelerated learning techniques to teaching staff development, which eventually become Jensen Learning, a consultancy outfit. The specialty of Jensen Learning is the integration of brain research into practical, user-friendly training applications & it has trained more educators/teachers in brain- based learning than anyone else in the world with over 50,000 graduates. He also subsequently wrote more than two dozen books about how to apply brain science to learning & education, including `Super-Teaching' & `Teaching with the Brain in Mind'.

All Eric's early three book as mentioned above essentially focus on the development of effective study strategies.

`Student Success Secrets' is primarily targeted at younger students, whereas `B's & A's in 30 Days' is catered more for college students. To me, `You can Succeed' is a condensed version of the first book with a more crisp writing to cater for high school students. This book is packaged like a handy pocket guide.

All the three book share these common features:

- An illustration of the author's sure-fire study process, even though I feel it applies more specifically to only reading, which is one vital component of the entire process. [In `Student Success Secrets', the author breaks it down to 1) Prepare Your Mind; 2) Ask Questions; 3) Gather Information; & 4) Evaluate Your Understanding. In the second book, the author tweaks it a little bit: 1) Browse; 2) Prepare; 3) Read; 4) Review & Check; & 5) Recall. In the third book, it's 1) Pre-study; 2) Ask Questions; 3) Gather Information; & 4) Evaluate/Correct. In reality, these are playful variations of the original SQ3R reading methodology created by Francis Robinson in the late forties.]

- Review points at the end of every chapter;

- Amusing cartoon illustrations to keep readers' mood appropriately light;

In `Student Success Secrets', I believe the first four chapters of the book, particularly, Chapter 2: Success Habits, provide an excellent preamble for readers. Strategy-wise, it is jam-packed with more than a hundred practical, time-saving tips. I like the author's `Stop & Take Action' at the end of each chapter. I reckon his timely use of Jane Roberts' quotation in the prologue:

"There are no limitations to the self. There are no limitations to its potential. You can adopt artificial limitations through ignorance."

is a very meaningful gesture.

My most favourite chapter in the book is the last chapter, i.e. Chapter 13: The 1% Secret. Here the author talks about the importance of taking baby steps & making incremental changes in your skills & attitude, coupled with affirmations & positive suggestions. This certainly helps to narrow the knowing-doing gap in learning & performance.

In `You Can Succeed', the Daily Scroll & the sample Self-Improvement Contract' in the introductory pages are useful tools to help readers to get started in developing effective study strategies.

In terms of breadth & depth of coverage, the other two books, namely, `Student Success Secrets' & `B's & A's in 30 Days', stand out comparatively better than this one.

Unlike the first two books, thirty short, entertaining instructive chapters are organised specifically in `B's & A's in 30 Days' to create an unique thirty day format of structured daily "learning menu" for readers. Application-wise, the reader can implement specific action one day at a time. This is really great!

One thing that strikes me most about Eric in all his writings is his uncanny ability to communicate eloquently in plain language with readers. He can write about (more specifically, talk to readers), from the most mundane stuff like reading & gathering information from a passage to the more complex stuff like understanding the impact of neurons on learning. Today, he is recognized as one of the leading translators of educational neuroscience in the world.

On the flip-side, one vital component of the `study process' is missing in all the foregoing three books. It pertains to lesson revision & rehearsal as a preparatory step to test/exam preparation. From my work with students, I find this step to be very significant in helping students to consolidate &/or recapitulate what they have learned prior to taking a test/exam. This step often helps to moderate the students' test/exam anxiety.

[To me, the `Study Smart Process' involves ten requisite steps or components:

- Goal setting;
- Time management;
- Active Reading;
- Information Gathering;
- Taking & Making Notes;
- Organising Information for fast Recall;
- Lesson Revision & Rehearsal;
- Test/Exam Preparation;
- Creative & Logical Writing;
- Stress Management/Energy Engineering;]
-
In the case of the first & last book, the last component or step in the process, i.e. stress management, is given only perfunctory treatment by the author. For some reasons, it is missing from the second book. In the case of `Student Success Secrets', Eric talks very briefly about `Eat Smarter' but offers limited advice on `Reduce Study Stress' in Chapter 2. Likewise, in `B's & A's in 30 Days', the author's advice on `Handling Stress' is seemingly sketchy.

A Teacher's Perspective

I first came across Student Success Secrets when I borrowed it from one of my students. He was using it to try to build his study skills and recommended it. That was about ten years ago, and I have since recommended it to many others. I came to Amazon today to send it as a gift to a student I know who is trying to get better. (and to get a new copy myself.)

This book works because it addresses more than just the skills. It addresses motivation and our image of ourselves. As a rowing coach and a teacher, I know how important both those things are. It is important to have an image of yourself doing it right. The writing is also direct and clear, with good examples. It moves quickly. And the skills and suggestions it makes work. I found myself applying the same principles in other situations.

Jem Sullivan has written a terrific companion to the new U.S. Adult Catholic Catechism that will be a welcome resource to anyone charged with leading a faith-formation program or discussion group. Each of the catechism's 36 chapters is given a two-page plan for an hour-long session. Included are summaries of doctrinal teachings, reflections, discussion questions, prayers, and excellent suggestions for further reading. And unlike the U.S. Adult Catholic Catechism, the guide contains references to the Compendium of the Catechism of the Catholic Church. Highly recommended.

UPDATE: After spending additional time with this book, I'd probably knock off a star or two. While the format is very good, combining prayer, doctrine, and reflection, far too often the discussion questions are of the navel-gazing variety. A perfect example is found in the chapter on Baptism: "What does Baptism mean to you personally?" Let it suffice to say that the questions would benefit from a more cognitive approach to learning.

this is an excellent introductory chemistry textbook....

it is great for the last year of highschool.. or for bridging from highschool to unviersity..

it isn't that deep enough for most first year chemistry courses... but reading through this book before OR while you are in ur first year course will greatly help you understand the material... because this book doesn't assume u know a lot about the subject already...

cuz face it guys... nobody tries to remember stuff in highschool.. i personally just wanted to get it over with... therefore I forgot everything ...... but in university ur mentality changes.. u actually want to learn.. not just get 90 and get it over with.. that's why I bought this the summer before my classes started.. and went through it a little everyday...

well my First Year class used Raymond Chang's CHemistry book (more advanced than this one) ... but I found it much easier, because I reviewed during the summer... and when I hit a topic that was hard.. i would reference this book.. read it.. then go back to Chang's and read the material... this helped a lot because this book assumes no previous knowledge....

so it's good for ppl like me.. for the few out there who actually cared in highschool.. and remember nething... this book is a waste.. because it isn't deep enough for first year chem courses (it is deep enough for non science major chem courses.. but not the hardcore first year general chem course)

hope this helps

This is an excellent book. I tutor students who are going into the allied health professions, and some have never had chemistry before now. The chapters are clearly written with sample problems after each topic and end-of-chapter problems. I refer to it for exercises for my students. It is the best that I have found so far.

I recently took chemistry part II after not having chemistry for several years. This book was a life saver. I was able to pull many examples from it to guide me when I did my homework. Chemistry is tough enough by itself, but this book really helped. All the answers are there so you can test yourself on one part, and then see the answers with explinations on another part. Everything was easy to understand in this book. I highly recommend this Study Guide. This Study Guide will save you a lot of time at the tutor, and keep you from pulling your hair out while figuring out chemistry.

This was my first time studying Chemistry, and the book was excellent.

It's intended to students in the health field (ie nursing), and their applications are wonderful.

A little heavy on the exercises, but better too much than too little. It would do well to include more answers to the practice questions, but that's how they get you to buy the Study Guide. Oh well.
