I am a teacher of students with mild to moderate specific learning disabilities and I have found this book to be of such a tremendous help, I call it my "special education Bible!"

Professor Lerner has put together a comprehensive book of approaches within the filed of learning disabilities; procedures for assessing and evaluating students; and teaching methods, strategies, and materials. This 8th edition is written with the new IDEA '97 regulations in mind.

Whether you are an undergraduate, or graduate student, pre-service special ed. teacher or an inservice teacher, this text is an invaluable resource that will benefit the novice and the veteran alike. I am in the process of completing my student teaching and I bought this text because I felt that there was so much I still needed to learn about learning disabilities. I am sincere when I say I was not disappointed!

This book is one you'll want to have available right at your computer or desk. Anyone who writes, teaches, learns or just wishes for simple inspiration will find it a treasure.

An abundance of quotes on nearly every aspect of education are presented within these pages. Use them for reports, posters, scrapbooking, stationary, inspiration, to illustrate a message....anything, really.

I Love This Book! Get One For Everyone on Your Gift List!

If you are wondering what to get the student, teacher, pastor, parent, grandparent, librarian, businessman, researcher, (deep breath) editor, secretary, Sunday school teacher, politician, childcare provider, lawyer, doctor (deep breath) or any other person on your gift list - look no further!

I have to get more than one copy of this book because it is going to be used so often in so many ways. I want a copy by my bedside for reading when I only have a few minutes before turning out the light. The quotations are thought-provoking and I enjoy pondering on the ideals some of them inspire.

I definitely want one on my resource shelf for teaching. Classical and Charlotte Mason style educators and homeschoolers and teachers of all types will love using this book as a resource for quotes to include in Nature Journals and Copy Work. There is even a chapter in the book entitled "Nature and the Outdoors" that I will refer to often in my own nature journaling!

One copy of the book should be kept at everyone's desk and I need another one in my laptop bag because I will want to use it in blogging and writing. I am very excited to find this resource and wish I had found it sooner. I am going to be able to use it when writing my newsletters and articles. I will even use it in my Christmas card correspondences this year! But most of all I'm going to enjoy reading this book whenever I get a few minutes to just relax - it's something I can just pick up and randomly read anytime.

Every chapter is like a new gift to be opened and relished. I was delighted to see so many subjects covered. The quotes are divided into 59 different subjects that cover life lessons in just about everything from Education, to Family Life, to Government and Politics! There is also a chapter on Special Needs which means a lot to me since I'm mom to twin boys with MR and autism.

This jewel of a book also has a handy section in the back of the book that includes a short biography of everyone quoted in it. What a great resource! This book includes over 1,000 quotes of great people such as Abigail Adams, Charlotte Mason, Isaac Newton, Noah Webster, Einstein, presidents, first ladies and many, many more.

Other pleasing bonuses include a chapter on creative ways to use the book, an index of names so you can find a quote of someone specifically, and an appendix listing great teachers and mentors past and present. There are even blank pages in the back of the book for recording quotes you might discover elsewhere.

When I was a young mother, I loved making posters of quotes and hanging them above my desk or on the fridge for inspiration. Now, I use them in blogging, e-mail signatures, and yes, I still like to make posters out of them and hang them where I can see them and be reminded of their importance. We never stop learning, and quotes are a great way to inspire us in bite-sized lessons. In this busy world, it's a great way to teach our children. Post them where the kids will see them, ask questions about them, and inspire good conversation.

I cannot imagine anyone not wanting to own this book. It is an ideal resource for teachers and homeschoolers, but history buffs, speakers, writers, book lovers and people from all walks of life will also want a copy for their library.

Caution: buy some extra highlighters and post-its because you're going to love marking up this book and dog-earing the pages. Trust me on this - you'll want more than one copy!

I think the anonymous quote in the book sums it up best:

"Wise sayings are like great men talking to us. They are the cheapest teachers, consultants, advisers, guidelines, pilots, signposts, guardians and counselors. They make us wise in one hundredth of the time of any other sources of knowledge. Get closely acquainted with them. They are short cuts to wisdom."

I give this book an A+!

"You have to study a great deal to learn a little." Charles Montesquieu once said, but all one needs to do is to read but a little of "Learning for Life..." to learn a lot.
With nearly 3000 quotations by more than 1000 people at your fingertips this book is a wealth of wisdom.
Veteran homeschooling mom and writer Teri Olsen has packed her years of research into this handy, enlightening, and valuable book.
Beginning with a selection of bible verses, Learning for Life is neatly organized into topical sections for easy reference. The pool of philosophers, writers, religious leaders, educators and other historical figures Teri has sampled is nothing less than impressive.
Read what Einstein has to say about imagination, or what Ambrose Bierce thinks of Education. Abraham Lincoln, Thomas Jefferson, Winston Churchill, Charlotte Mason-all the great men and women of our history are there with their nuggets of truth and enduring wisdom for the ages.
You'll also find brief biographical notes on the originator of each quotation so you can familiarize yourself with the individual's background or place in history, and learn if the author was self- or home-educated.
This book is perfect for students, writers, pastors, or anyone who is looking for that perfect quote but doesn't have the time or energy to find it, and will certainly make a fine addition to your home library.
I had a blast reading it and Teri's book has inspired me to start using quotes in my own writing. Like a garnish on a well-prepared dish, the perfect quote can make all the difference.

This is a convenient resource for students who need quotations for written or spoken presentations. Being in the education field myself, I am aware of how often a quotation can be helpful to provide support or controversy, history or humor for a particular topic. Familiar as well as mind-challenging quotes can make an otherwise ordinary presentation into a memorable one. I found this book to be well researched and documented. It has an easy to use layout and would be an excellent time saver for the busy college student who is looking to add insightful quotes to a term paper or speech but doesn't have time to spend searching in library books or on the internet.

Excellent Hands-On Suppliment
Helpful Votes: 10 out of 10 total.
Review Date: 2006-06-26
Adam's "Lecture Tutorials" collection is an excellent suppliment to any astronomy textbook. While most text books include a couple of introductory chapters on naked-eye astronomy the material included is often surface deep at best and downright confusing at worst. Much of this is because the topics covered (i.e.-the celestial sphere, daily and yearly motions of the stars, sun and moon, etc) are highly abstract and require activities that force the student to move away from memorization towards an understand of the apparent motions and what causes them.

The Lecture Tutorials are a test ed set of just such activities based on a wealth of astronomy education research. They can be used in both large scale classes and smaller groups to get students to work through the difficult misconceptions and misunderstands that oftentimes beset the subjects being studied.

The activities range throughout the standard astronomy curriculum but, in my opinion, the best activites are those that focus on the apparent motions of the Sun, Moon and stars.

I recommend this to any student trying to better understand the subject and for any educator who wants help moving their students from "fun facts" to deeper understanding.

A Really Enjoyable Introduction to Astronomy
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2007-09-19
It's been a long coming, but it's finally here! Astronomy instructors and authors have produced a wonderfully readable and thoroughly comprehensible introduction to the science of astronomy. Each topic in this book really is a mini-tutorial as proclaimed by the cover title. The book format is actually written in a laboratory worksheet fashion (the sheets can be detached from the book along their perforated edges) with each worksheet dedicated to a specific astronomy concept (e.g., position, motion, Keplar's Third Law, etc.). One pass through this ingeniously designed "book of tutorials" and the beginner to the wonderful world of the cosmo is truly ready to move on to more advanced astronomy books and/or astronomy courses. My congratulations (and gratitude) to the Pearson Addison-Wesley Publishing Company for making the concept of learning enjoyable once again.

If you are at all interested in astronomy, but recoiled away from the subject after opening a typical "introductory" college textbook, then you would do yourself a tremendous favor by purchasing this book. You won't be disappointed!

This particular sample of Lang's collections is another treasure, as always, expanding beyond the more well-known stories (although they are certainly not ignored!) to Arthurian legends and Indian tales. Stories from a variety of countries are included, and randomly put together rather than organized by country. It makes a straight-through reading a blast, like a wild tour around the world. The illustrations, as always, are masterpieces in themselves.

There are a number of collections by this author under various fairy colors. They are all excellent and entertaining althoug after a while they do tend to repeat the same idea although they do not repeat stories, just some regions have the same ethic story told a little differently.

The Andrew Lang collections are well worth it. I read them when I was a child (bless that library) and when I saw them for sale I couldn't resist. The stories have retained their freshness and it is interesting to see similar themes dealt with by different cultures.

These would be great for parents reading to their children or for children looking for something interesting and fun to read.

Definitely worth it!

This is a Great book about Beagles. It is not just another dog book. I adopted a beagle mix 8 months ago and I wish that I read this book before. It perfectly describes every aspect of a Beagle's life.

It even includes some (though limited) information about Health Care issues. The only thing it missed is how to deal with the occasional "Reverse Sneeze" attack.

It includes a Training DVD that will give you pointers on dealing with Beagle issues.

It is a great Book for anyone who is thinking of getting or owns a Beagle. It is a quick read (128 pages) and a good Beagle reference book.

This is an excellent book about beagles by someone who has been directly involved with the breed for many years. Since this author is also a veterinarian, this book is written with professional acuity. Breeders especially will love this book as it gives good practical advice on breeding their hounds and finding others who do.

Good general care such as vaccinations and regular checkups is included. I recommend this book for anybody who owns this delightful breed. I love beagles!

"Living With A Beagle" is an excellent new book about beagles, not your run of the mill "boilerplate" dog book. The author has been involved in beagles for many years and is also a veternarian! I was particularly pleased to see the information on choosing a reputable breeder, and how to determine if you are dealing with one when purchasing your beagle pup.
Due to her medical background, there is also lots of up to date info on vaccinations, disease, and even doggie first aid. I most heartily reccomend this book to any one who owns, or expecially anyone who is thinking of getting a beagle!

As a fourth-year Spanish student, I couldn't resist taking a look at this book. I opened it up and immediately wished I had books like these when I was younger. On opposing pages are opposites or "los contrarios". The illustrations show colorful and cute bears that represent a word. At the top of the page is the word in english, and at the bottom the word in Spanish. Also at the bottom is a pronunciation of the word, in easy and understandable terms that a child can comprehend. In the back of the book is a list of the all the words with their pronunciation. This is definetly an effective and cute bilingual book I sure wish I had as a kid.

Tony Bates writes an immensely practical guide for coping with changing technological needs and developing a rational and strategic process for making sound decisions. As a manager in a university department, I appreciated a resource that focused on the academic environment. In addition, I think the issues he raises and the process he proposes have relevance for other educational institutions and training facilities, especially those in the public or non-profit sector which tend to be financially conservative by nature. Bates offers best practices and expert advice on factors to address when confronting technological change, especially as it relates to teaching. As he points out, technology is a means to an end, so in order to best manage technology one must be aware of the inevitable impact technology has in society and, consequently, position the institution within changing markets and needs. Major investments in technological infrastructure must be paired with a corresponding vision of the organization. This book is about the art of managing cultural change as much as it is about incorporating new tools, taking into account the human factors and the hazards implicit therein.

The format of the book is also helpful. It begins with an executive summary, provides concluding summaries at the end of each chapter, provides a balanced perspective on the pros/cons to choices that the institution must make, and presents real-world case studies to give a flavor of principles in action. I highly recommend this reading for anyone in an administrative or teaching capacity who finds himself or herself faced with the difficult choices inherent in a technology transformation. The only thing that would have increased the value of the book for me is a deeper discussion and emphasis on the role of the library or technology center within this transformation.
