I have been teaching chess to children for the last 15 years.
The first steps of learning this wonderfully complex and artistic game are the toughest for children. So, it is important to implement some special teaching techniques, as described in the book "Children and Chess: A Guide for Educators". By using these techniques, educators such as myself can help children learn about the abstract concepts of chess in a fun, hands-on manner.
I already use a lot of the techniques described in the book because they are effective. In addition, the book comes up with fresh and new perspectives that can add to the learning environment of chess. In this book, I have found new ideas that children love, such as the Charades chess game. All the children enjoy it, and even the shy ones participate in role-playing and acting as a chess piece!

Knowledge Quest has done a phenomenal job creating this new study on the Middle East. Our family has thoroughly enjoyed the arm-chair-style narrative of the countries of this region, countries often heard about but often misunderstood. As a family we want to develop a love for this part of the world, and this study has provided an excellent foundation! We would highly recommend this study and others by this company (A child's Geography is another family favorite)

This book is a gem! It is written conversationally, and is engaging without being patronizing. It is written from a distinctly Christian viewpoint, but treats the people of this non-Christian region with a great deal of respect. There are narration prompts at the end of each section and either a recipe, poem or craft at the end of each chapter. It also has a few suggestions for supplemental reading. We love this book! I hope that the authors will write other volumes (and quickly, we are almost done with this one!)

Ann Voskamps second volume of geography is, if possible, even better than the first. In this volume she takes us on a geographical, narrated, journey of the Holy Land. I know very little about this area of the world, but my whole family has enjoyed learning through this book. The discussion, pictures, links, and information are all current and the photos are crisp and bright and unique! We have enjoyed vicariously and hope one day to actually take our family to this amazing birthplace of humanity and when we do I am certain that the things they remember will be the things we read about in this book-its almost like a travelog, but with activities, writing exercises and interactive links to make the holy land really come alive in your living room. A great, gentle, interesting read and I highly recommend it. I have homeschooled 5 kids who range now from 24 down to 8 and I only wish I had this book when my older kids were younger! I wouldn't have had to look for anything else.

I'm embarrassed to admit all I do not know about the Middle East, yet given the current political climate, shouldn't we all know more about this region? "A Child's Geography" is a great book for parents and kids to learn about how the region birthed God's plan for humanity, and how humanity is living out God's plan there even today.

I love how personal the book is.....the current pictures of the people, their homes - the Holy Lands become very real as you read this book. Lots of great teaching tools, too - "Field Notes" to guide a child's narration of the information; a "Travel Log" guides you through some important map work; "Bringing It Home" gives art, music, and food suggestions with lots of websites for enrichment (like playing "senet," an ancient Egyptian game, etc.)

Highly recommeded for education and fun!

I just returned after 6 weeks in China. This book is excellent in terms of the useful words and phrases that it lists for virtually every situation you might encounter. It also has a nice little dictionary section at the back (both English-Chinese as well as Chinese-English) that comes in handy. HOWEVER, it badly needs an update in terms of the descriptions and "tips" that it provides regarding things like travel, currency, food, taxis, shopping etc. If you're buying this book - and I certainly recommend it as a handy phrase book - I strongly suggest that you ignore all the tips and advice it provides you. You're better off getting something else that is more up-to-date for this.

This book was an incredible resource for me as I toured through China this summer, studying the language and culture. I kept it in my pocket everywhere I went until it finally wore down and broke apart. But have no fear, I taped it back up and let it work some more Chinese magic. The book is organized into sections such as "Meeting People" and "Shopping" and "At the Doctor" that will help you with more than enough information, from vocabulary to suggested travel iteraries to understanding of the indigenous culture. I just lost my copy in the New York Subway so I'm gonna get another. «Ü¦nªº®Ñ!

I as an adult am a collector of these Dover coloring books. They are not for small children to color. I use colored pencils. For me they are a form of stress relief and some are quite complicated. This one is just pure fun to read of the traditions and color the pictures.

My family knows when I am really stressed as the colored pencils and books come out. It is a unique and fun thing to collect and doesn't take up much space. I think over 30 yrs or so I have about 20 different ones.

I am a teacher, and my first grade class studied holidays around the world. This was an awesome teaching tool. Each coloring page was full of detail and made a nice follow-up activity to a story read about traditions from other cultures. There is informative text at the bottom of each page, which I used for a shared reading experience.

Jump at the Sun is filling a WIDE gap in the market with these classic fairy-tales by satisfying some of the long-unmet interests of African-descent populations. Our American culture is FLOODED with images (photographed or drawn) of European-descent individuals that imply the following message: "This is how beauty is defined." Think about it: when is the last time you have seen a truly dark-skinned, thick-lipped individual whom the mainstream media or Hollywood have boldly declared as beautiful, or even attractive?

It is, indeed, good to open up this beautifully illustrated adaptation of Cinderella with my two little princesses, and help shape their concept of beauty, affirm their sense of self-esteem, and build upon their positive self-image. We've had the book for a couple of years now, and they still enjoy reading it (and looking at the illustrations!).

This is a lovely story that is appropriate for all ages. My girls loved it. It is nice to have fantasy books that feature black girls. I was tired of all their books either having pictures of white children or being about being proud of being black. Sometimes they just want to read a fun fairy tale that happens to feature brown faces. My kids are two and four...not ready to be in the struggle just yet.

This is a good, consice book on how to maximize your studies. It's strength is that the author sets out what has worked in his experience, not only as a student, but as a counselor as well. There are many ideas, and it is well to take the basics that he lays forward, and then to modify them to one's purposes.
The only weakness is that it is concise and at times it would be well to have a more thorough presentation of the some of the methods. Still however, much of this comes through practicing the techniques more so than having them bottle fed to you.
Highly recommended.

This book was great for my long history of memory problems.
It's a relief to find a book that has more than a couple
chapters of useful information. Every chapter "bangs" you
with advice that is right on target. Another book that is
this way for both memory and high grades is one called
SURVEY OF 300 A+ STUDENTS (by Kenneth Green). He graduated
from school with 12 A+'s on his academic transcript and then
got into Harvard. Next, he graduated valedictorian of his class
at Harvard University.

Review Date: 2000-11-09
Why did I buy this book? I am a middle-aged professor, comfortably situated, and needing neither to impress anyone, nor to make more money, nor to "take exams." But for me, it is a joy at any age to improve my mind.

This book is excellently designed for self-study.

The first part gives you a wide variety of standard techniques, explaining clearly the kind of memory task where each applies, e.g., sequential versus non-sequential. The second part allows you to practice and develop your new skills on 11 different academic subjects, which run the full gamut of humanities and sciences, such as might be encountered in high school or college.

One very effective feature: throughout both parts of the book, the author follows brief tutorial sections on the techniques--seldom longer than a page--with an exercise where you can solidify your grasp and get immediate feedback. I think when you see how well you are doing, you'll be strongly encouraged to continue. This is also an advantage over the well-known Memory Book by Lorayne and Lucas, which I once attempted to study; in that book, the chapters were fairly long, and at the end the authors might suggest you make up an exercise on your own to test the new technique. However, passing a test you made up yourself seems a little chintzy! Or maybe, my creativity was not up to the task. In any case, I gave up on that book after about 2 chapters, notwithstanding all the amusing anecdotes that fill it.

In the second half, I wanted to strengthen my grasp, so I did all the subjects outside my own strong area (physics, math). These are areas I normally have neither much interest nor aptitude, but the techniques came through with flying colors. Out of the 43 exercises I did, with 319 separate items of information, I missed only 10.5 items (and I graded myself conservatively). In other words, my score was 96.7% correct. Now I don't know how well I would have done w/o those techniques, but my memory is entirely mediocre--I am one of those unfortunates who turns the page on a book and sometimes cannot remember what he just read--and it is very doubtful that my usual "brute force" techniques, applied over a similar study time, would have netted me a retention score above 33-50%.

At first glance, techniques of memory play a role somewhat similar to that of glasses on a near-sighted person: they do not enhance his natural biologic capacity, but they give him "workarounds" using other factors at his disposal, in particular, visual and verbal associations built up with help of his own creativity. I was surprised and delighted, as I worked through the exercises, to discover in myself an ability to make creative mental associations I never knew I had. So in this sense, it seems that the techniques did change my brain for the better. I imagine that the techniques, if used often, may become more and more second nature and eventually even "first nature."

I am so glad I found this book: unlike many a self-help book, it did live up to its promises. Dr. Browning, thank you for making available such a readable and well-structured guide!

When companies implement Customer Relationship Management (CRM), they often find that their number of complaints shoots up. Berndt Stauss and Wolfgang Seidel candidly explain that often, companies actively discourage complaints with processes that are so barrier-ridden that consumers switch to another company's products rather than negotiate the maze. As an alternative, Stauss and Seidel present a CRM-based complaint management system that, for enlightened corporate citizens, can become a strategic asset and even an indirect revenue source. Occasionally, they get a little carried away with their "consultantese" and terms like "process owner" and "complaint owner." Nevertheless, the seven-page complaint-management checklist at the end of the book is particularly valuable. We strongly recommend this book to CRM managers who want to know what their customers really think.

It is an unusual book because of the total approach to complaint management. The weaknesses of most CRM books is lacking in this book. The reason is that after having read the book you have a complete picure of what complaining behavior and complaint managment is. You also know how complaints are related to CRM. Moreover, and what is most rare is that you get practical advice about how to manage complaint management in your firm or how to learn how to teach complaint management. In other words, you know both the value of managing complaint management as well as the cost of not doing so. If you are itnerested in introducing complaint management or have already introduced - buy this book!

Not another marketing fad: complaints as a business process
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2005-06-28
This book is not another marketing book praising how good you should treat your customers, even though it has one of the 'hot' words in its title (is CRM still hot?). Instead, it is a very thorough and rich analysis of all the elements that a service manager needs to consider if the issue of complaints falls near his/her area of responsibilities.

The authors take you through a precise and well structured account of all elements of the complaint management process. First they describe why and how customers are likely to complain; then they go into how to stimulate, receive, process, control, and analyze complaints, and then back to the likely customer reaction to our response. The last third of the book tackles the organizational and operational issues that you will need to sort out to implement these recommendations: human, organizational, and technological issues.

The first glance at the table of contents may put you off. It is probably too crowded... But be certain that you won't find another book out there with this depth of practical and no-nonsense knowledge and applied techniques.

--- If you are buying just one book on customer complaints, get this one!

In the past few decades the Services Industry has advanced long way - in a direction from product services to a customer centric business environments.
Although the quantitative and qualitative importance of services - as well as its spectrum of offerings - has grown quite considerably, the thrust of activity still seems solely to center around its operational tasks and processes. Bernd Stauss' and Wolfgang Seidel's revolutionary Complaint Managent model represents an impressive progress in our understanding of what services organisations must do to become outstanding and exemplary leaders in the roles of services providers and services innovators.
I have read the book entirely page by page, each chapter creating more desire and curiosty to read the next one.
Today the aspects of complaint management are used probably in hundreds of business facilities around the world, yet there is to my knowledge no other book or public documentation providing such a holistic introduction and a guidance to everyone in services management, to enable the creation of a powerful blue print for services organisations.

This is an accessible, well-written review of Italian grammar -- remarkably thorough for the price, and well laid out with usage examples. A particularly useful feature is coverage of conventions of contemporary usage -- such as E-mail conventions -- that are rarely covered in a traditional grammar. It would benefit from a more extensive dictionary section but at this price it's hard to complain.

A complete overview of grammatical terms, parts of speech, and how they work together.

Studying the grammar of a foreign language is often perceived as torture by many, but there is no way to avoid grammar. To master any language one must know how its parts work together.

This book takes away the torture out of studying grammar, by providing a user-friendly practice and review manual. The complete book is written in a "conversational style", so is friendly enough to be used as a self-study guide.

The book is divided in twenty chapters that cover everything from the structure of simple sentences to writing e-mails. At the end of each chapter there is a "culture capsule" completely written in Italian with a glossary, which is designed to give information on a major component of Italian culture and civilization. This capsules can be consider at least useful reading material, but in fact they give information of which no intermediate or advanced learner should be unaware.

At the back of the book is a list of the most frequently used words in the Italian language, verbs charts and the answers to all the exercises.

Absolutely a must for anyone who wants to master the Italian language.

I ordered this book about a month before I took the AP calculus BC exam and it was a life saver. It had everything in it that I wanted. The practice tests were slightly harder than the real AP exam and that is a good thing, because then you are prepared. If you are going to be taking the AP calculus exam I would highly recommend buying this book.
