Chemistry Books

This book single handedly got me through biochemistry. Great as a study aide, especially if you are having a hard time understanding the concepts. Explains them in a simple, straight-forward way with lots of examples and diagrams.

The best text in the field.

Throughly covers crop characteristics, plant enzymes, respiration, microbial populations, in silo effects of O2, water, common silage additives, and aerobic deterioration. Copiously referenced throughout, allowing for identification of the source paper.

It is from an European perspective, that of wet grass silages, but the principals are universial.

Recommended for researchers or grad students.

I purchased this as a gift for an outstanding student to use at college. It is colorful, concise and speaks well to the the reader who has to master a difficult subject.
It's imperative that students of science understand how pervasive chemistry is - not just a course to "get through" - a body of knowledge which gives insight into how their science "works".

I would recomend this book to students on their first approach to Biochemistry. This is a confusing subject, with so many difficult names and processes, and this books makes all these understandable. It uses experimental facts to explain the characteristics and processes involved. You will find full-color illustrations and diagrams, that help making clear processes such as replication and transcription. Another outstanding feature in this book is that it includes clinical applications and laboratory techniques. At the end of the book you will find an Internet address book...really useful. It also has a glossary, in which you will find concise definitions of every important biochemical term. A fine book.

Features a wealth of useful information about a number of things relating to microarray technology and its utility in drug discovery. Thus, it hinges on the fact that this field is actively evolving at a rapid pace, and as the title suggests, is going to impact ( if not already ) the Pharmaceutical Industry by minimizing the failure rate of early stage drug developments in drug discovery.

There is so much info packed into this compilation that this review in no way can do it justice. But let me just say it offers an excellent selection of contributing authors providing fundamental reviews in areas of interest for those running a Core Facility, such as laboratory automation, quality control, and amplification stratagies. It also offers many good selections of case studies for Cancer Drug Discovery, ChIP-on-Chip, Multiplexed Platforms, Toxigenomics, and Malaria Antiparasitic Discovery, and Protein Arrays to name a few.

In particular, I enjoyed the coverage of the Industry as a sector with chapters discussing the evolution of the science itself, the platforms available, the future directions, and the market shares and trends of the companies involved. I would say one of strengths of this book lies in its ability to present the biological meaning of the concepts presented e.g. "the use of biochips for elucidating the mechansims of drug action" and "vaccine developments". The other great thing is that it covers the bleeding edge information of the field, so you are getting the most current stuff from those on the front-lines actively using, developing, and shaping the future direction of the field itself. I give it five stars without blinking an eye :)

In 1977, this book transformed a scientific field. In the 1990s, its reprinting is mainly of historic interest. Not much of the biogeochemistry data from Hubbard Brook in the intervening 20 years have been integrated into this "2nd edition."

Outstanding reference book. The chapters on biomedical waste management and incineration crisply and coherently describe the problems and concerns and provide excellent examples to underscore the author's points. Mr Turnberg fills in a gap that has long been missing: a single text that covers all the issues related to this complex and controversial field.

I think this is one of the best books I have read on molecular evolution. The explanations are lucid. Easy to understand examples are given in increasing order of complexity.
The book is not restricted to molecular evolution itself but covers a wide range of topics. I highly recommend it!

This book is essentially a review/summary of existing information on hexavalent chromium. The book is extremely useful as an "introductory" text as well as providing references for more advanced issues. It is perfect if you're looking for a readable primer on chromium. The editors have done a thorough job.
