best book about paint making

Review Date: 2006-08-27
Every paint maker must have this book on the shelf. It covers an area which would be otherwise almost completely dark, since there are not many books which deal with paint components, paint making and paint rheology in the same volume.
For artist's paints formulator, everything is useful in this famous reference.
For those who make industrial coatings, even if the formulas of industrial paints have changed since its publication, the principles of dispersion and the theoretical knowledges exposed here are still accurate and have still to be known by engineers. This book presents them clearly.

The bible of the manufacture of surface coatings

This is an old book, but much has remained the same since it was written. It effectively lays out the requirements for the dispersion of pigment in to polymer solutions and emulsions, using various types of dispersing equipment.

The book is very important for every person who want to enter the realm of coating technology. But the weakness of this book is also obvious:it is too old to keep abreast with the increasing development of coating industry, for instances the emergence of green coating :high build, solventless, powder coating ,water-borne coating etc.,the new application procedure ,such as cvd,dvd,self-leveling.I think it is time for Mr. Patton to roll up his sleeves to review the theory and practice of coating that have come up since 1979 .God bless Mr. Patton to present his new edition to his readers who is waiting so long for his new book.

This book really proves the fact that the author is the master of this field. Being a comprehensive text, it touches almost every aspect of "photoelectron studies". A large number of examples are taken from many recent research papers, which is the bonus of the 3rd edition. There is a well-balanced treatise of theory and applications with insightful comments.

We (Precision Detectors) have referenced this book countless times to rediscover approaches used to characterize polymers and proteins, many similar books have been written since this book was first published, but none approach this book for its readability and understanding.
If its available buy it. Its worth every penny (cent).

Even if outdated, this book is and will always be a classic on physical chemistry. It is thorouh, clear and very instructing. Enjoyable reading and the source to go check where those hydrodynamics formulae come from. Specially noteworthy are the sections on light scattering and centrifugation. A must have if you are in the field. And actually some schools still use it for teaching. Way! University of Bordeaux II, biochemistry, for real. How many 1969 books can say that?

You don't have to be a statistician to be able to use this book. Gives practical talk on use of statistics using thought processes any engineer can relate to. Buy this one.

Very good book by actual users of the methods they discuss
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2003-02-20
This is an excellent book. The three authors (Leitnaker, Sanders and Hild) actually use the methods they discuss. They provide a careful conceptual and philosophical discussion of process study and improvement using control charts and related tools.

The emphasis is NOT on covering a large number of tools (for that, other books might be more appropriate) but instead on enabling the statistically unsophisticated user to understand how to actually USE the methods.

The authors use case studies extensively in the book to motivate the methods and to illustrate their use.

Highly recommended. It might not be the ONLY book on "SPC" which you should buy, but if you buy any books on SPC, this book should be one of them.

Hey look! a good statistics book and no complex integrals!

Review Date: 2000-01-31
Coming from three academians this book is suprisingly practical. I recommend it to anyone who is in manufacturing and wants to utilize SPC charts in quality improvement and Engineering Process Control (EPC). What makes this book unique is that the authors acomplished to explain SPC applications to both attributes data and variables data without any complex formulas. That is a very distinct importance if you are in a process industry such as chemical, food, paper, cement, etc. where you measure temperature, pressure, PH, level and color rather than the dimensions of a part for compliance and also where you may not have subgroups but just samples. Most other books I have read dealt with attributes data for parts industries exclusively. This book includes many advise and examples for managers and engineers. Definetely a must for engineers and quality professionals who have been out of school for a while and realizing the importance of the SPC and EPC in a competitive market. A prerequisite for Six sigma white(!) belts too, but may be too simplistic for experienced practicians. If you are an engineer, after reading this book buy a copy of "Statistical Control by Monitoring and Feedback Adjustment" by George Box and Alberto Luceno (available at Amazon.com) and don't forget to send a thank you note to authors of both books.

Fine Refining Book

Review Date: 2005-12-16
One of the authors showed the book to me. I wish it had been out two years ago. It would have given me a better understanding of ULSD chemistry. Chapters by Mochida and by Song give unexpected detail on new catalysts such as STARS and Nebula.

The best way to describe the difference between this book and others is its breadth. It covers a lot of things I didn't know much about. That's going to be a big help to me as a relatively new refinery engineer.

Great Petroleum Processing Book
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2005-12-16
This book is a long awaited addition to the petroleum processing literature. The chapters on lube base stock production, both conventional and synthetic, are excellent. The book also covers ULSD in great depth. I was glad to see several chapters on modeling, APC, and online optimization, which seldom (if ever) have been covered in previous books such as this. The first chapter is a well-written overview of oil refining, and the chapter on pollution control is excellent, covering regulations and giving examples of recent incidents. I strongly recommend this book to anyone interested in oil refining.

Provides a blueprint and a compass
Helpful Votes: 31 out of 33 total.
Review Date: 2002-08-25
This book is important for two reasons: (1) it describes what a process is and the main characteristics shared by processes regardless of the model used, and (2) it provides a clearly defined approach to implementing processes and a framework for improving them.

Why these two reasons are important is because most IS/IT professionals have a vague idea about what processes are. They can visualize them on a conceptual level, but not on a detail level as a flow with measurable attributes. The way the authors portray processes allow all stakeholders (producers and consumers) of a process chain to use the same definition and to objectively measure the same characteristics. This cross-functional understanding and agreement is essential to process improvement. However, understanding processes and having a clear definition are only half the equation - implementing and improving them can be a daunting task without a clearly defined roadmap. Therein is the main value of this book: it provides that roadmap. You can either get to your destination by trial and error, false starts and wasted time and resources, or you can follow the identification, selection, "as-is" assessment, "to-be" target and implementation plan sequence that are presented. The authors highlight key points and pitfalls each step of the way, which is based on their extensive experience from which you'll benefit.

If you're involved in process design and/or improvement in IS/IT this book will point you in the right direction and get you moving forward.

A sound approach for many improvements
Helpful Votes: 32 out of 33 total.
Review Date: 2001-01-17
This book is a great "how to" guide! First, I like how it connects the improvement activity to the business and customer needs rather than getting wrapped up in the technology of information systems. The book outlines a 7 step process for improvement and breaks down each step into bite-size pieces that can be easily followed. Each step comes complete with checklists, questions to ask, considerations to be reflected upon or reviewed, and diagrams or examples that make the action very clear. A lot of thinking has been done and shared, and it will be quite easy to adapt the books guides to most applications. There isn't really much theory here, just straight-forward assertions about what works and what doesn't. However, the content is consistent with most Quality and Organization Development theory I've read. I also like the chapter end summaries and pitfalls. As I read this, I found myself thinking this could be used for most any business improvement project quite easily.

IT Process Improvement - About Time

Review Date: 2001-03-06
It is about time a book like this get written. The authors have hit a nerve with the typical IT department. That is, taking the "rambo" fire fighting mentality out of I/S, and conforming it into a smooth running operation. The authors take lessons learned years ago in manufacturing and engineering disciplines, and have correctly applied them to IT. The book is written exceptionally well, is easy to understand and provides a practical step-by-step methodology. I believe there is enough detail in the book to allow motivated and savvy IT managers to drive process improvement in their organizations. This book is definitely a "keeper". It should be part of every I/S manager's library, and it should not gather dust.

Excellent mass transfer book

Review Date: 2003-07-11
If your program splits transport phenomena into separate fluid dynamics, heat transfer, and mass transfer classes, this would be an excellent text for the mass transfer class. The author does an excellent job of explaning the diference between mass transfer coefficients and diffusion coefficients compared to the generic tranport phenomena texts. He also integrates some of the recent developments in the literature into his treatise on mass transfer. Finally and the most interesting aspect of the book is the integration of a computer algebra system, specifically Mathcad into the problem solving process. Overall an excellent text.

Excellent undergraduate mass transfer book

Review Date: 2005-09-22
This book is amazing! The way the author presents the theory, formulas and applications followed by an example is an effective way to understand the material. Another good thing about the book is that at the start of every section there are objectives which gives you a scope of what are the themes that you must learn. This book is very practical, specially in chapters of absorption, desorption (packed, sieve tray) and distillation columns. What makes this book an amazing one is the integration of the mass transfer phenomena with the mathetical computer program, MathCAD to solve tedious problems. The author presents MathCAD routines in the chapters and also in some of the appendixes. All you have to do is copy those routines and you are instantly solving problems. This is very useful in the design of separation columns (chapters 4 - 6) and when calculating diffusion coefficients (chapter 1). This book is as great as its author, believe me I took some courses with him, unfortunetly I couldn't take mass transfer with him. =(

A very didactic approach to mass-transfer operations.

Review Date: 2002-12-21
The author of this book takes a very effective approach to introduce the reader to the complexities of mass-transfer operations design. From the very beginning of the book, the author guides the reader into a hands-on approach to calculations using MathCad programs to simplify tedious calculations that are usually a roadblock to the learning process. To make it even more convenient, an ftp site is available (see the Wiley.com page for the book) from which you can download the MathCad example programs and the Solutions Manual. I think that this book will soon become the standard textbook for mass-transfer operations.
