I found this book when I was in high school and loved it. After I started college and was working in the chemistry lab this book became my trusted friend. As a physical science teacher, I use the simple experiments every year. I know that I can easily get the materials and that the kids will see results. I often recommend this book to other teachers.

Hard to find, (and very costly if you do) is the original 1960 edition of this book. It seems to have gained infamy since the 1995 incident near Detroit of child chemist, David Hahn. With the release of a full scale book this month by author Ken Silverstein called 'The Radioactive Boyscout', which details this nuclear incident, the popularity of this early chemistry 'how to do it' book will only grow. The early edition is known for its 50's style simplicity where chemical wastes and pollution were never a concern to Americans, certainly not in the age of 'better living through chemistry'!!! Thoroughly interesting and full of ideas and inspiration, it is the bible for any young chemist-in-training. You will enjoy.

When I first read this book in 7th grade it awoke in me a deep interest and excitement about science and chemistry. It provides a straightforward, hands on guide to the science of compounds, their qualities and their interraction. Dozens of visually interesting experiments and demonstrations are set out. Explains how to set up an inexpensive but fully functional home chemistry lab, including how to make much of the equipment. Great book.

I love this book...I currently have about 4 chemistry review books, including an older edition of this book from my brother. The SAT II Books (like Princeton Review and Barrons) are good, but this book is very clear. There are a few trick questions, but mostly it is about the concepts. Very helpful with all the extra questions at the end of the chapter. Absolutely great! Thanks

As an APICS member, this was a must. Concise enough, it projected the TOC concepts into applied scenarios so that one can actually measure the value of the theory.
There are not many good books on TOC apart from Goldratt's novels, so buy it.

Finally - a PRACTICAL guide

Mark's book is an excellent, easy to understand read, which I found extremely helpful.

Most books on TOC deal with a lot of theory, or case studies. This is the first book I've read that goes into incredible detail on how to implement TOC using the author's years of experience in this field.

A must-read if you are plannig to implement TOC.

If you want to succeed with implementing TOC
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2005-12-03
There are, today, many good books on the Theory of Constraints, or "TOC". If you are relatively new to TOC, books from authors like Eli Goldratt, Bill Dettmer, Eli Schragenheim, Debra Smith, Lisa Scheinkopf, and many others are "must reads."

These books, however, generally focus on explaining the details of TOC. This is necessary. In order to succeed with TOC you have to know what it is and how and why it works.

But subject matter knowledge alone is not enough, if you want to actually use TOC in business. You must also have a valid roadmap for implementing it.

In my experience, this is where many people fail with TOC. They believe they can "just wing it" and so try to implement TOC without having a valid roadmap. The results are all too predictable: they wind up lost in the weeds, the implementation fails, and the company becomes blocked from further improvement for a very long time.

Mark's book is valuable because it provides a real roadmap for implementing TOC in a manufacturing organization.

Throughout the book, you have the voice of a successful TOC consultant leading you to understand how to implement TOC in a manufacturing organization. The writing is clear and direct. The advice is concrete and actionable.

The book also provides examples of various charts, forms and procedures that you can use as patterns for the materials you will need in your implementations.

In closing, I am highly satisfied with this book and don't hesitate to recommend it to anyone who is considering implementing TOC in a manufacturing organization.

My copy of this book is dog eared and warn out from use. Everytime I reference a section, I learn something new. Clear and simple explanations to complex and difficult challenges we all face in today's competitive environment. This book should be in every practitioner's back pocket.

I have an M.S. in Logistics and a nine-foot shelf of text books. When I need an answer I reach first for Williams' book, it is often the only one I need. I have only two complaints:
1. The binding - for these prices the binding should not be so fragile (I'm on my second copy).
2. References to ISO-9000 as a "Quality" standard. While most pursue ISO-9000 to help improve their quality, it is a "Documentation" standard, and it is possible to become ISO-9000 certified to build garbage.

For these two reasons (and the fact that Amazon won't let me) I can't give the book the seven stars it otherwise merits.

This book couldn't have been better if Moses himself had brought it down from the mountain along with the Ten Commandments. I started to highlight the most important and relevant points but, unfortunately, began to run out of ink well into the second chapter. Despite the technical nature of the subject matter, the book is easily read and digested. The formulae and calculations are presented in a manner that is quickly comprehended by both engineers and nonengineers alike. This is one great book!!!

...Perhaps five stars are not enough.

Bought this as a supplement to my graduate courses in surface chemistry. While there is better text available for graduate-level study (Adamson and Gast), this book does a superb job of laying the foundation in colloids and surface chemistry. With a strong background in physical chemistry, the subject matter will be a breeze to learn. I struggled with the courses until I picked this up. I applaud the author for a fine job in organization and layout of material, as well as a basic delivery of theory.

I picked up this book because we recently started a project where management uses the term "SCM" a lot, and I had no real idea of what that means. This book provides a great overview of the ideas and genesis of SCM, and why it is useful. It also provided lots of detail and examples about the ideas presented to really cement them in my mind, and translate them to activities that we currently do. I can have an intelligent, scientific conversation about SCM now, which is exactly what I was looking for. This book is really excellent.

Excellent Introduction to SCM

Review Date: 2005-03-09
The first four chapters of this book might be called: "Why do Software Configuration Management." And they are excellent. If these explanations make sense to you, you might implement SCM before you look around at the software project and find that part of the source code is missing, the source code of this sub-routine doesn't match the binaries, this bug that was fixed is back, and any number of other problems.

The next several chapters go into the fundamentals of SCM. This includes such things as the mundane definition of configuration numbers and the reports that need to be issued.

Just when you are getting to the point where you know that this can't be done, the book goes into the SCM automation tools that are available. Chapter 16 talks about the general functions that can be performed by the SCM tools. Finally he gives a list of the most popular high-end SCM tools. (Mr. Leon - in the next edition of your book I'd like to see some comments made about each of these tools. Just a short sentence or two would be nice to help me narrow down the list of likely suppliers.) For low-end (and low-cost, even free) tools, he points you to the cmcrossroads.com web site for a comprehensive and frequently updated list of suppliers.

This book is a valuable introduction to the whys and wherefores of software configuration management. It will tell management what can be expected and if you're assigned to the task, it will get you well started.

I am the CEO of a software company and even though I knew the importance of good SCM practices, as a small company, we procrastinated on actually implementing anything formal. Anyway, when the fires got to a point, we decided it was time we took the medicine to get serious about SCM and I turned to Mr. Leon's book for help. I also sifted through a bunch of other books on the topic at libraries and bookstores and was immediately overwhelmed by the seeming complexity and all the jargon. The simple language, the concise explanations and the organization of content in Mr. Leon's book served as almost a how-to-manual for me as we went about implementing SCM concepts in our organization. I bought a couple of copies of the new edition for my two EPMs and they have been unanimous in their praise of this book as well. If you're looking to bring some order into your software development world through SCM, I would highly recommend you start with this book.

For those studying biomolecules with NMR, the unofficial bible is of course the maroon colored Cavanagh book. Though this is an excellent book, it isn't the best suited book for beginners. This is where Levitt's book comes in: this is by far the kindest introduction to NMR that I have seen, with heavy emphasis on understanding the concepts first and the formalism later. The book is full of useful diagrams, detailed analogies, and exercises for the reader where other books only show equations. So borrows someone's Cavanagh first, and if you get stuck after 20 pages then order yourself a copy of Levitt and you won't be disappointed. If you already have studied NMR and are looking at how to apply it to proteins, then Cavanagh should suit you fine.

I'm taking an organic spectroscopy course for my graduate program in Organic chemistry and my exams consist of MS, IR, proton NMR, and C13 NMR spectra.

This book is absolutely incredible. It gives you chemical shifts for nearly every conceivable structure for proton and C13 NMR and it also gives you absorptions for the IR frequencies of known functional groups. It has helped me many times in trying to determine the structure of an unknown compound.

Like the other reviewer said, this book is the bible of organic spectroscopy. I see it being used all the time in the organic research lab when graduate students are trying to figure out what they synthesized.

I am a first year Veterinary Student. My study partner did not have as much of a base in biochem as I did. While trying to bring her to my level, I found this book. When I loaned it to her, she showed it to her boyfriend, a resident in the Teaching Hospital. He promptly asked to borrow it to use to prepare an upcoming talk. This is obviously a book for those who need a quick reminder, as well as those who are very smart and need to learn this info.

Although the book is only in two colors, the diagrams are clear and helpful, and the text is wonderful. I can't wait to get it back!

An outstanding biochemistry textbook presented in a functionally and clinically relevant manner.
Although there are numerous biochemistry textbooks available, none of the available texts presents the information in a dynamic, easy to read manner as Dr. Engelking's textbook does. Numerous diagrams in the book are excellent visual aids to understand clinical biochemistry. Metabolic disorders and the disease processes resulting from biochemical defects are presented succinctly in this book. Biochemistry and physiology, and anatomical principles are skillfully integrated in this book by the author. Such a presentation makes this an extremely helpful resource text for the Veterinary Medical students. This textbook will be extremely helpful to the clinicians as a quick and easy to understand reference source.

This text has been written for well-prepared veterinary students who have had prior undergraduate training in biochemistry, for interns and residents, and for practicing veterinarians who wish to update their general knowledge of physiological chemistry. Emphasis has been placed upon instructional figures and tables, while text material has been held to a minimum. Several multiple choice questions at the end of each chapter aid in gauging the reader's comprehension of the subject matter, while overviews at the head of each chapter summarize key concepts.

Care has been exercised in the preparation of this text to present a clear and concise discussion of the basic physiological chemistry of mammalian cells, to relate events at the cellular level to biochemical processes in the whole animal, and to cite examples of deviant biochemical events where appropriate. Emphasis has been placed upon metabolism, with topics appropriately sequenced to permit the development of a broad and in-depth knowledge base in physiological chemistry.

Although care has been exercised to include relevant subject matter in a concise, up-to-date and reliable fashion, all authors are fallible, with this one being no exception. Therefore, when errors or serious omissions are detected, or if clarity of presentation should be improved, mature and constructive feedback via an e-mail directly to the author (rather than through Amazon.com) would be genuinely appreciated.

There are two basic types of biochemistry texts. One emphasizes biomolecules and their reactions, while the other concerns itself with biochemical explanations of physiological phenomena. This text manages to merge the two approaches with concise, accurate, and comprehensive writing, and with illustrations that are almost self-explanatory. It should be strongly considered by those seeking a clear, lucid and readable account of the metabolic machinery of animals.
