Need Something Amusing to Read?Review Date: 2006-03-21
Megalomaniacs will want to skip right to "Form an Independent Nation". In just 8 short pages, Fulghum describes the steps you'd need to complete. Like most of the items in the book, Forming an Independent Nation does have a large number of prerequisites. For example you will need "hard currency", especially if you choose to acquire your nation through peaceful means. Well no worries, just check out Fulghum's section on stealing gold from Fort Knox.
Thrill seekers, there's plenty of material here for you too. Good starting points are "Fly Through the Eye of a Hurricane" or "Guide and Surface a Nuclear Sub through Ice". My personal favorite is "Drive a Tank through a Tornado". Fulghum says the tank is "available from the US Army, contact the Pentagon to arrange purchase or lease". Does anyone have a phone number?

Rainbow Fish to the Rescue ~ Marcus PfisterReview Date: 2003-03-17
I like this book because things like this hapen in everyday life. Rainbow Fish is a good example of how people follow others, and do not think for themselves. When one other the other fish is not excepted becasue he is a little different, Rainbow Fish doesn't know how to react. But, he learns to stand up for himself and learns how to treat others. I think everyone should learn to try to except everyone. We are all same, yet we are all different.
Trite and rather disappointingReview Date: 2005-08-13
I really don't know what came over Marcus Pfister. "Rescue" picks up where "The Rainbow Fish" left off. Each fish now has its own shiny scale, and they all play together happily. However, a new fish without a shiny scale comes along, and rather than welcome him to the group, all the fish ignore the newcomer. The Rainbow Fish goes along with the crowd even though he feels bad for the new guy. With little or no development to the story, the Rainbow Fish experiences a change of heart, the new fish is welcomed to the group (after being rescued from a prowling shark) and everyone is happy again. The moral of the story, which practically thumps the reader over the head, is to treat others nicely.
The original "Rainbow Fish" book did a much better job of presenting the exact same moral. This book feels forced and rushed, as if Marcus Pfister was working under a tight deadline and needed to get his manuscript off to the printer yesterday. I bought my copy of "Rescue" at a dollar store, and it was worth the buck but certainly not much more. Stick to the original "Rainbow Fish."
Rainbow Fish tot the Rescue ~ Marcus PfisterReview Date: 2003-03-17
My favorite character is Rainbow Fish. He realizes how the little fish feels, yet in the end he learns how to make the little fish happy. This is a great book on teaching kids to except everyone. Everyone is different in their own ways. WE just have to learn to except that we are all not the same. I liek this book, it is one of my favorite childrens books. These books have great characters, and can relate to life very well.
Rainbow Fish to the RescueReview Date: 2002-10-31
In the last story Rainbow Fish felt he was too good for the fish without the shiny scales. He showed them off to the point where the other fish ignored him and thought he was snooty. He gets advice and decided to share his scales with the other fish. In this 2nd addition the schools of fish with the shiny scales are playing and a small yellow fish asks to play. Since his scales are dull, they say no. All of the sudden a shark comes looking for food and the small yellow fish is out in the open all alone. Rainbow Fish knows what he must do!
It's a good lesson for younger children to learn from. About sharing, accepting, and so on. I would definitely recommend it to parents looking for good children stories.
Pfister Offers Engaging Texts and Fine ArtworkReview Date: 2001-10-28
This book might appeal to readers who want the Rainbow Fish's luscious illustrations and foil highlights, but disagree with the supposedly "conformist" or "socialist" thrust of the original. This book offers a message of inclusion with which most parents would agree. I like Rainbow Fish here and in the other titles.
(Of course, it's a little unrealistic that a shark would be scared away by a few little fish darting around its snout, but hey, this isn't natural history, it's a fable!)
It's a big hit with my child- I didn't give it 5 stars because as an adult, it seems a little bit cliche. But I'm sure she would give it a top rating!

Soul SurferReview Date: 2007-04-03
Soul Surfer is mainly for middle school s and up. I also think that this book targets the right audience. For example: indescribable, amputation, and traumatic. "I never saw the shark closing in on me. I'm glad that I never had a split second to wrap my head around the fact that I was being attacked." - Bethany Hamilton (Soul Surfer)
I think that this book is written in a passionate voice and it fits the character well. "Why did God choose me and what does he have in mind for me." -Bethany Hamilton (Soul Surfer) This book is written in first-person.
Soul Surfer is an easy book to follow. It explains points and what happened to Bethany in an easy to understand way. "It's a thirteen year old female and the arm is gone..." -Soul Surfer
I would recommend Soul Surfer to anyone really. Mainly s though. If you are interested in true stories, this would be a great book to read. I truly enjoyed this book and I think that it showed me how perseverance, courage, and strength are great things to have in life and they can really help in tremendous ways.

I find it funny that she talks so much about God and Jesus and all that stuff. According to the native Hawaiians, the tiger sharks are called "amakua", which are sea gods. Maybe she should have prayed to the shark so she wouldn't be short one arm!
Toughest Surfer Girl Out ThereReview Date: 2006-01-26
Bethany throws her soul into surfing, calling her unique style of the sport "Soul Surfing." (Hence the title Soul Surfer). She may have lost her arm in the attack, but she could never lose her faith in God. Maybe her faith motivated her to try again, and it was so strong that she now competes professionally worldwide. Bethany has proved to the world that the body may be a substantial part of surfing, but it's the soul that counts.
Truthfully, Bethany's experience has made her a better person altogether, and probably even a better surfer! Her heartfelt passion for surfing has brought her closer to God in faith and in spirit, and could quite possibly prepare her for adulthood better than anything.
Bethany Hamilton's first-hand account of the full-on fight to keep surfing is worth the read all the way. This teenage autobiography would interest even the least likely of readers, Bethany's story is so amazing. I recommend Soul Surfer to anyone of any age.

Shark AttackReview Date: 2003-07-01
This book tells you where sharks live and where they mostly attack and it tells you about people who have been attacked by sharks.
I like this book because the sharks are kind of dangerous but I mostly like them because of their sharp teeth.I like their sharp teeth because when they fall I can make a neckless out of their teeth.
I recommend this book to someone that likes to study about sharks and that is learning about them.

Throw logic out the doorReview Date: 2004-10-22
The pace in the book is swift, too swift in fact. Through the entire book you feel like your playing catch-up, the action rarely slowing down. Mr. Holsclaw, even the most numbed reader needs a pause. The atmosphere in the book is chaotic and disorienting. I'm still not sure if that result was intended or just a side effect. Being that this is Holsclaw's first book I'm not going to judge his style of writing too harshly. Having read Laid to Rest previously, let's just say his style has improved. Just one tiny tidbit, if I may. Mr. Holsclaw, it's okay to say someone knocked on the door, you heard a beep or the phone rang. We really don't need to read, "Brrrrring" every time. We get it, no need to describe each and every noise.
The characters are your basic shallow, stereotypical cutouts. Not one person is authentic. The two main players, Dr. Wyatt and Dr. Paige, are more involved with each other than the sharks. Which, by the way, was completely gratuitous. The secondary characters play out there roles predictably, lacking both brains and emotion. With more one-liners than your local lounge lizard, the characters proved amusing only when they were getting eaten. Which leads me to the only plus in this book - the gore. With every turn of the page, someone is dying and they don't go easy into that peaceful sleep. I'm talking rip, shred, and devoured; it was beautiful.

Baseball Cards, Autographs and the Shrewd Marketing of Pop CultureReview Date: 2008-08-03
Author Pete Williams shows an angry and bitter Mantle after a 1993 appearance on a national home shopping program that was in conjunction with the MLB All-Star Game festivities put on by Upper Deck - railing about the the host's questions, which may not have helped in pushing his autographed merchandise - and attempting to negotiate the following weekend's appearances for the company into being considered as two events, which will make the Yankee legend closer to accumulating enough dates in the year for his nearly $3 million salary to sign autographs on "exclusive" memorabilia.
From the days when baseball cards were used as inserts to secure the packaging of tobacco products to the bubble-gum wars waged by Topps on other companies and a landmark judicial decision in 1980 that opened the doors wide open for a competitive marketplace in baseball card sets, Williams ambitiously covers the bases as he delves into the creation of Upper Deck, an idea from a frustrated card dealer who was tired of buying bogus memorabilia and an inventor who could add a unique identification tag to thwart counterfeiters.
While the story is initially driven by an entrepreneurial spirit born in the 1980s, neither of the founders are in the picture a few years later as the company profits explode as it becomes the high-end retailer in sports cards and collectibles through aggressive marketing and the securing of legends with exclusive and lucrative promotional contracts, along with the baggage from any number of controversies and allegations of unsavory business practices and fraud.
This is an incredible tale on how a kid's summer pastime became an industry monster that seemed so solid on the outside, but could pop at any time like a bubble blown too large from one small stick of gum. With the shrewd marketing of pop culture and the creation of a unique sports boutique based on its alleged rarity, Williams forges a classic story driven by the dreams of youth....and greed of adults.

The office interaction is realistic, she demonstrates the variety of psyches that make up the workplace, where everyone has a role, individual with their quirks and talents, yet part of the whole system.
The main character, in the person of Mahin seems like an enigma to me- frail and fragile with her medical problems and emotional state. Yet, an inner strength comes forth as she deals with uncertainties and especially when she is face to face with danger. Quite a heroine.
Adding an element of paranormal/ metaphysical aspect will pique the minds of believers and skeptics alike. This part of the novel is informative, actually very interesting. The use of descriptive language is not boring. I like the way the novel flows from one scene to the next.
There is something for everyone. Pet lovers will feel how the novel evokes and re-enforces their affection for their chosen pets. It confirms the belief that pets are good communicators. Card Shark is a great read!

Trusting the TarotReview Date: 2005-10-31
Card Shark is a taut, romantic mystery, which teaches us much about life and the philosophy of the tarot. It poses the question of whether events are determined by fate or free will. Miner, who is an Adult Education Instructor, uses excellent character development with crisp and realistic dialogue. She has a fine eye for detail and we can easily envision the historical town of Herkimer, New York.
This book is a must-read for animal lovers, since both cats and dogs play a major role in the novel and are portrayed in a unique manner.
Suspenseful and unpredictable, Card Shark moved along quickly with many twists and turns. It was a real page turner and I would highly recommend it.
