Definately intersting, and definately just for fun. Many items are common sense if you take the time to stop and think about them, but there are a number of items that have little gems of information that a layperson would never have known to try should they ever encounter such a situation.

Fun, if ultimately impracical.

Interesting and goofy

Some are more realistic than others, but all are entertaining. I'll certainly allow this book when I start my own nation off the coast of Africa.

I've found Don't Try This At Home to be lighthearted and fun. It's also impractical and seems to be based largely on complete fantasy. What is it about you ask? Think of it as a 264 page Do-It-Yourself guide for the armchair adventurer.

Megalomaniacs will want to skip right to "Form an Independent Nation". In just 8 short pages, Fulghum describes the steps you'd need to complete. Like most of the items in the book, Forming an Independent Nation does have a large number of prerequisites. For example you will need "hard currency", especially if you choose to acquire your nation through peaceful means. Well no worries, just check out Fulghum's section on stealing gold from Fort Knox.

Thrill seekers, there's plenty of material here for you too. Good starting points are "Fly Through the Eye of a Hurricane" or "Guide and Surface a Nuclear Sub through Ice". My personal favorite is "Drive a Tank through a Tornado". Fulghum says the tank is "available from the US Army, contact the Pentagon to arrange purchase or lease". Does anyone have a phone number?

All you need to know about things you don't need to know

Imagine calling Fort Knox and asking the best way to break in and steal the gold. Don't have the guts for it? Don't worry, because Hunter Fulghum has done it for you. He has contacted everyone from the U.S. Dept. of Energy to his local alien experts to find out how you would do everything from Swim the English Channel to Borrow the Mona Lisa to Start an Independant Nation.

Aside from being funny and quite interesting, the book is very well written; I highly recommend it.

This is a good childrens book on teaching kids how to behave. Children do not know how to behave properly. But when you tell them through books, and use characters like Rainbow Fish, then it is easier for them to understand. It is a great book for kidst o read to understand how to expect peoples differences. Everyone is different in their own ways, it is just harder for some people to realize it. Everyone has their own special qualities, people just need to learn that we are all different.

I like this book because things like this hapen in everyday life. Rainbow Fish is a good example of how people follow others, and do not think for themselves. When one other the other fish is not excepted becasue he is a little different, Rainbow Fish doesn't know how to react. But, he learns to stand up for himself and learns how to treat others. I think everyone should learn to try to except everyone. We are all same, yet we are all different.

Trite and rather disappointing

When I first read "Rainbow Fish to the Rescue," I had to check to make sure this book had, indeed, been written by the author of the original Rainbow Fish book. "Rescue" has the feeling of a quickly-cranked-out sequel, one that the author of the original would never have approved had he been given the choice.

I really don't know what came over Marcus Pfister. "Rescue" picks up where "The Rainbow Fish" left off. Each fish now has its own shiny scale, and they all play together happily. However, a new fish without a shiny scale comes along, and rather than welcome him to the group, all the fish ignore the newcomer. The Rainbow Fish goes along with the crowd even though he feels bad for the new guy. With little or no development to the story, the Rainbow Fish experiences a change of heart, the new fish is welcomed to the group (after being rescued from a prowling shark) and everyone is happy again. The moral of the story, which practically thumps the reader over the head, is to treat others nicely.

The original "Rainbow Fish" book did a much better job of presenting the exact same moral. This book feels forced and rushed, as if Marcus Pfister was working under a tight deadline and needed to get his manuscript off to the printer yesterday. I bought my copy of "Rescue" at a dollar store, and it was worth the buck but certainly not much more. Stick to the original "Rainbow Fish."

This is a great book no teaching children how to except others. When all the fish with a sparklie fins are playing a game. They do not let a little fish without a sparklie fin play. Rainbow Fis wants to invite him to play yet doesn't know what his friends will think of him. He is afraid to stand up to his knew friends. Instead of standing up for what he believes. He follows his friends and does whatever they do. Later on in this book Rainbow Fish saves the day.

My favorite character is Rainbow Fish. He realizes how the little fish feels, yet in the end he learns how to make the little fish happy. This is a great book on teaching kids to except everyone. Everyone is different in their own ways. WE just have to learn to except that we are all not the same. I liek this book, it is one of my favorite childrens books. These books have great characters, and can relate to life very well.

Rainbow Fish to the Rescue, Marcus Pfister's second addition to Rainbow Fish, is a short and sweet story about Rainbow Fish, and his now sparkling scaled friends feel they're too good for fish without sparkling scales.
In the last story Rainbow Fish felt he was too good for the fish without the shiny scales. He showed them off to the point where the other fish ignored him and thought he was snooty. He gets advice and decided to share his scales with the other fish. In this 2nd addition the schools of fish with the shiny scales are playing and a small yellow fish asks to play. Since his scales are dull, they say no. All of the sudden a shark comes looking for food and the small yellow fish is out in the open all alone. Rainbow Fish knows what he must do!
It's a good lesson for younger children to learn from. About sharing, accepting, and so on. I would definitely recommend it to parents looking for good children stories.

I appreciate Pfister's ability to write stories that challenge my 2 1/2 year old's comprehension of story structure and vocabulary while sticking to themes and plots that she can understand and enjoy.
This book might appeal to readers who want the Rainbow Fish's luscious illustrations and foil highlights, but disagree with the supposedly "conformist" or "socialist" thrust of the original. This book offers a message of inclusion with which most parents would agree. I like Rainbow Fish here and in the other titles.
(Of course, it's a little unrealistic that a shark would be scared away by a few little fish darting around its snout, but hey, this isn't natural history, it's a fable!)
It's a big hit with my child- I didn't give it 5 stars because as an adult, it seems a little bit cliche. But I'm sure she would give it a top rating!

Bethany Hamilton is a strong in her faith, but when tradegdy strikes, will she ever have the faith to surf again? This is the amazing story of a whose faith and courage could help her surf again. Will it be enough? In this book it really shows the love and passion this has for the sport and the perseverance to take risks again. You will find that faith can be big enough for anything in life, even if you don't think so. This book is targeted to all ages, but mainly middle school students and up.
Soul Surfer is mainly for middle school s and up. I also think that this book targets the right audience. For example: indescribable, amputation, and traumatic. "I never saw the shark closing in on me. I'm glad that I never had a split second to wrap my head around the fact that I was being attacked." - Bethany Hamilton (Soul Surfer)
I think that this book is written in a passionate voice and it fits the character well. "Why did God choose me and what does he have in mind for me." -Bethany Hamilton (Soul Surfer) This book is written in first-person.
Soul Surfer is an easy book to follow. It explains points and what happened to Bethany in an easy to understand way. "It's a thirteen year old female and the arm is gone..." -Soul Surfer
I would recommend Soul Surfer to anyone really. Mainly s though. If you are interested in true stories, this would be a great book to read. I truly enjoyed this book and I think that it showed me how perseverance, courage, and strength are great things to have in life and they can really help in tremendous ways.

Personally I would not recommend this book unless you are a full on Christian. For more than half the book all she talks about is how all she did was pray and that God got her through all of her problems, and how her church and faith helped her most. The book was very boring, and every page was like the page before. My mind would always wander when I would read, because there was nothing exiting. So this is probably not the best book to read.

Good for Bethany, but this is still a stupid book.

I find it funny that she talks so much about God and Jesus and all that stuff. According to the native Hawaiians, the tiger sharks are called "amakua", which are sea gods. Maybe she should have prayed to the shark so she wouldn't be short one arm!

Toughest Surfer Girl Out There

At just 13, Bethany Hamilton lost her left arm and a piece of her surfboard to a tiger shark, possibly limiting her accomplishments of her life forever. But did that stop her from surfing? Of course not! Ever since age three, Bethany has constantly been in the water, usually off the beach near her Kauai home. Her parents are probably most to blame. Both her father Tom and her mother Cheri supported her one hundred percent, because they had both surfed all their lives as well. But her parents are also her teachers, since she is homeschooled. Bethany has two older brothers, both surfers, and a best friend named Alana, another surfer, who stayed withher through the entire attack, surgery, and recovery. She has turned pro and is currently sponsored by her favorite surfboard and clothing manufacturer, RipCurl. Bethany really went against all odds the day she got back on the board. No one, not even her own family believed she would ever surf again, but the very first thing she did after the stitches were taken out was go out and buy a new board! Bethany is not only a celebrity in the surfing world, but in the general sports world as well. She has recieved the 2004 Teen Choice Award for Most Courageous Teen, the 2004 ESPY Award for Best Comeback Athlete, and was called "The Bravest Girl in America" by YM magazine. Soul Surfer is a triumphant and moving account of Bethany Hamilton's fight to get "back on the board."

Bethany throws her soul into surfing, calling her unique style of the sport "Soul Surfing." (Hence the title Soul Surfer). She may have lost her arm in the attack, but she could never lose her faith in God. Maybe her faith motivated her to try again, and it was so strong that she now competes professionally worldwide. Bethany has proved to the world that the body may be a substantial part of surfing, but it's the soul that counts.

Truthfully, Bethany's experience has made her a better person altogether, and probably even a better surfer! Her heartfelt passion for surfing has brought her closer to God in faith and in spirit, and could quite possibly prepare her for adulthood better than anything.

Bethany Hamilton's first-hand account of the full-on fight to keep surfing is worth the read all the way. This teenage autobiography would interest even the least likely of readers, Bethany's story is so amazing. I recommend Soul Surfer to anyone of any age.

This was a wonderful story, written by Bethany Hammilton herself. It is very discriptive when describing the events on the day of the attack, and also talks about her life afterword. This is a book that is very hard to put down once you start it. It is a very quick read that is very injoyable. Bethany talks alot about her religion and how she believes that God has helped her and the He has a plan for her life. I highley recomend this book.

I am a chiropractor and carry this book in my waiting room. It is a little scary, but at the end it has a ecological animal friendly ending. It is educational and fun. Both boys and girls rush to this book. I had to re-order it twice because it simply walks away with the little ones. I highly recommend this great book.

Rodney Fox had almost run out of time. He needed to find a fish and fast. To win he needed to find a local fish a big one too. He won last year and he wanted to win again. But today something will happen, what will happen? Several other divers were fishing and caught a lot of fish and the smell of blood was around.

When you read this book you will see what will happen to Rodney Fox.

I liked this book because I love sharks, and I want to study them, and you will to throughout this book.

Sharks are kind of dangerous because some sharks can kill you.Only three sharks are very dangerous they are the tiger shark, bull shark and the great white shark. There is one man named Rodney that was attacked by a great white shark.Rodney got 462 stiches in his right arm. How do you think Rodney felt?Stanly Fisher was also attacked by a shark and then he realized his right foot was missing.
This book tells you where sharks live and where they mostly attack and it tells you about people who have been attacked by sharks.
I like this book because the sharks are kind of dangerous but I mostly like them because of their sharp teeth.I like their sharp teeth because when they fall I can make a neckless out of their teeth.
I recommend this book to someone that likes to study about sharks and that is learning about them.

I have never laughed so hard at a picture in a kids book than I did with the one of Stanley hugging the penguin. (You gotta buy to see it!) It still gets me going every time we read it.

My son and I have been laughing along to this book long before Stanley became a tv star. He's 8 now and still wants to read it once a week! The shark facts are educational but the pictures are what really get ya. (Make sure you read the ingredients of the shark food.)

My son (4 1/2) LOVES Stanley and loved Tiger Time and the Gorilla book. He waited anxiously for Shark-Mad Stanley when we ordered it only to be disappointed because the game on the CD-ROM does not activate. On the back cover of the book, it states to click on the fish tank to launch the game but we have clicked to to avail. We even returned the book for a new one which had had the same result. I can't believe no one would test this software before it shipped or notice it for 2 YEARS!!

My son (almost 5) goes nuts over Stanley on Disney and loves sharks, so this book was perfect for him. It is full of fun and interesting facts about sharks as well as great illustrations. The CD-Rom that is included is also fun, although the text that is part of the CD-ROM has to be read by someone older than a preschooler. Music is played, but there is no voice for the text part. All in all, it is a great book and CD-ROM (even my 9-year-old daughter likes it!).

I've read this book on 07/30/2000 in Taipei Municipal Library and the kids loved it so much. I also produced some printouts of Stanley's room from the CD-ROM so the kinds can play finding the difference of two alike pictures. This is how: when you click on some object of Stanley's room, the object would change in some way. You can use alt-PrintScreen to capture the screen image and paste it on some graphic software. I think this is not only an entertaining book as Carlos Gonzalez said, but the book is also full of interesting knowledge of sharks.

This was in our first order from Amazon and because my son loves sharks it seemed like a good choice and it was. This book had small little facts with humor and a great story. My son has often asked if he could have a pet shark and this story was about a little boy who wondered the same thing. In the end he learns the truth about owning one and how he gets there is great. This is one of those rare little boy books that apeals to their sense of danger and need for anything that grosses out or horrifies their little sister. My son's favorite part was when the shark was in Stanley's house and then his friends were going to have to join him too. I would recomend this book it is fun and your kids would enjoy it.

Review Date: 2004-10-22
The basic sketch of the story is enticing, although not original it is a new take on an old idea. The very thought of a new species of shark, with an intellect that matches a human is frightening. How would the world respond? That is what drew me to the book, the fascination. While the idea is good, the execution of the complete story is choppy and undeveloped. Too much in a rush, Holsclaw never truly explains the origin of the shark or their purpose. Add to that the highly unlikely, completely absurd solution to the shark's visit.

The pace in the book is swift, too swift in fact. Through the entire book you feel like your playing catch-up, the action rarely slowing down. Mr. Holsclaw, even the most numbed reader needs a pause. The atmosphere in the book is chaotic and disorienting. I'm still not sure if that result was intended or just a side effect. Being that this is Holsclaw's first book I'm not going to judge his style of writing too harshly. Having read Laid to Rest previously, let's just say his style has improved. Just one tiny tidbit, if I may. Mr. Holsclaw, it's okay to say someone knocked on the door, you heard a beep or the phone rang. We really don't need to read, "Brrrrring" every time. We get it, no need to describe each and every noise.

The characters are your basic shallow, stereotypical cutouts. Not one person is authentic. The two main players, Dr. Wyatt and Dr. Paige, are more involved with each other than the sharks. Which, by the way, was completely gratuitous. The secondary characters play out there roles predictably, lacking both brains and emotion. With more one-liners than your local lounge lizard, the characters proved amusing only when they were getting eaten. Which leads me to the only plus in this book - the gore. With every turn of the page, someone is dying and they don't go easy into that peaceful sleep. I'm talking rip, shred, and devoured; it was beautiful.

The back-stage temper tantrum of Mickey Mantle speaks volumes on what has become a multi-billion-dollar industry in baseball cards and sports memorabilia.

Author Pete Williams shows an angry and bitter Mantle after a 1993 appearance on a national home shopping program that was in conjunction with the MLB All-Star Game festivities put on by Upper Deck - railing about the the host's questions, which may not have helped in pushing his autographed merchandise - and attempting to negotiate the following weekend's appearances for the company into being considered as two events, which will make the Yankee legend closer to accumulating enough dates in the year for his nearly $3 million salary to sign autographs on "exclusive" memorabilia.

From the days when baseball cards were used as inserts to secure the packaging of tobacco products to the bubble-gum wars waged by Topps on other companies and a landmark judicial decision in 1980 that opened the doors wide open for a competitive marketplace in baseball card sets, Williams ambitiously covers the bases as he delves into the creation of Upper Deck, an idea from a frustrated card dealer who was tired of buying bogus memorabilia and an inventor who could add a unique identification tag to thwart counterfeiters.

While the story is initially driven by an entrepreneurial spirit born in the 1980s, neither of the founders are in the picture a few years later as the company profits explode as it becomes the high-end retailer in sports cards and collectibles through aggressive marketing and the securing of legends with exclusive and lucrative promotional contracts, along with the baggage from any number of controversies and allegations of unsavory business practices and fraud.

This is an incredible tale on how a kid's summer pastime became an industry monster that seemed so solid on the outside, but could pop at any time like a bubble blown too large from one small stick of gum. With the shrewd marketing of pop culture and the creation of a unique sports boutique based on its alleged rarity, Williams forges a classic story driven by the dreams of youth....and greed of adults.

The "Barbarians at the Gate" of the baseball card industry. Fascinating, yet creepy, to see from the inside how a child's hobby has been exploited by sleazy characters. Will definitely turn you off collecting new cards as an investment.

Well written book that is a must reading for card collectors

I enjoyed this book very much. It has two themes: first, it shows how one company with the right idea and the right people behind it can revolutionize an entire industry, against all odds. Second, it tells us that to succeed in today's competitive markets you have to elbow your way in. While the allegations of wrongdoings by trading card companies seem like unsubstantiated hearsay, the book does make you feel that you are on the inside, witnessing how the real entrepreneurs do it. Very entertaining read.

A lot of mud slinging.

I found the book to provide an interesting history on collecting from early times to present. After the history lesson is over, William's seems to spend an inordinate amount of time dwelling on the various misdeeds of Upper Deck President Richie McWilliam. McWilliam has a very strong (and negative) reputation that is well understood within the industry. Why spend half a book telling everyone that he is dishonest, a liar and a cheat when it is already well understood?

So much for trusting the Amazon star rating system (4 1/2 stars?)! Serves me right for basing my buying decision on only 3 reviews. This is an amateurish attempt at a mystery novel and the ending is pathetic! Don't waste your time and money!

Gigi Miner weaves a tapestry of emotions, intrigue, and suspense in this mystery novel. Her characters come alive, as real as people that cross our path in this life. I can't help but nod my head in agreement with some of the characters as they play out their roles. In my head, the characters sounds familiar. I`ve met some of them.

The office interaction is realistic, she demonstrates the variety of psyches that make up the workplace, where everyone has a role, individual with their quirks and talents, yet part of the whole system.

The main character, in the person of Mahin seems like an enigma to me- frail and fragile with her medical problems and emotional state. Yet, an inner strength comes forth as she deals with uncertainties and especially when she is face to face with danger. Quite a heroine.

Adding an element of paranormal/ metaphysical aspect will pique the minds of believers and skeptics alike. This part of the novel is informative, actually very interesting. The use of descriptive language is not boring. I like the way the novel flows from one scene to the next.

There is something for everyone. Pet lovers will feel how the novel evokes and re-enforces their affection for their chosen pets. It confirms the belief that pets are good communicators. Card Shark is a great read!

In a captivating and action packed story, Gigi Miner describes the life of Mahin, a young woman whose husband died one year ago. Mourning the loss of her soul mate, Mahin takes up tarot card reading to make ends meet. She encounters a number of interesting clients but one day, her cards begin to give her ominous messages.

Card Shark is a taut, romantic mystery, which teaches us much about life and the philosophy of the tarot. It poses the question of whether events are determined by fate or free will. Miner, who is an Adult Education Instructor, uses excellent character development with crisp and realistic dialogue. She has a fine eye for detail and we can easily envision the historical town of Herkimer, New York.

This book is a must-read for animal lovers, since both cats and dogs play a major role in the novel and are portrayed in a unique manner.

Suspenseful and unpredictable, Card Shark moved along quickly with many twists and turns. It was a real page turner and I would highly recommend it.

Gigi Miner, in her tale of a young window trying to live through life after sorrow, wove a thousand intricacies in her tapestry of mystery that left my head spinning. With her interesting tone of narrative and a disturbingly capturing look into the world of a murder mystery, she used tarot as an inclusive factor, and added an entirely new dimension to this book. I would read it a thousand times and still be left in awe.
