Sharks demystified

This is a wonderful introduction to sharks for young readers, with good photography. Howard Hall discusses the different types of sharks, how their feeding habits are reflected in their size and shape, how they see, swim, and locate prey. I was surprised to read that they can actually dislocate their jaws and thrust them forward past the end of their noses to bite their prey - and this happens so fast that it can only be seen on film in slow motion. Hall explains why the sharks close their eyes before the attack, that their eyes are so sensitive that they can see in near-darkness, and many other fascinating facts. Although the author uses some advanced terminology such as ovoviviparity, heterocercal tail, Ampullae of Lorenzini, etc, all words are well explained within the text and in a special glossary. It's a book worth having.

This book on sharks rocks! Sharks are so damn cool(the only animals cooler are of course little cats, wolves, hyenas, and big cats)and this book has so much to show about their lives! Good God, I mean, the photographs are beautiful and/or cool looking, the many species of shark are given full respect and are shown in both art and photo, lots of amazing information is given on everything from tiger sharks(my favorite shark of all time)great whites, makos, hammerheads, grey sharks, whitetips, blacktips, lemon sharks, blue sharks, whale sharks, basking sharks, megamouths, & all the other species of this cool animal that lives in the ocean. Also, it tells how many people study them. Any shark lover needs to get this RIGHT NOW!

I *love* this book, if only because it is one of the very few publications out there with a guide to catching the elusive chocolate shark. There's an entire section devoted to sailing one's skin boat up the cocoa canal in the hope of catching sight of this elusive beast, and as such, this book totally warrants the 5 stars I've awarded it.

Author Bill Bellville has assembled a collage of unique and colorful Adventures which shift intriguingly among the Galapagos Islands, the Caribbean coral reefs, the azure springs of Central Florida, the abyssal deeps of Cuba, and remote and curious sites in the Florida Keys. Bellville's metaphorical writing style, a deep commitment to Nature, and his drive to explore out-of-the-way destinations, produces a tapestry of fascinating tales, making this book difficult to put down. The author's lyrical depictions hauntingly infuse his writings with a special sense of surreality, which is both captivating and memorable. This is a book which shares a very personal prespective, bringing the reader's consciousness fully into play as one adventure blends seamlessly into the next. In short, a treat for readers of all ages! Elliott Maynard, Ph.D., Arcos Cielos Research Center, Sedona, Arizona.

Sometimes I read good books and sometimes I read bad books but this is one of the greats books I have ever read.So let me tell you a little about this book. One day Mr.Hifal the father in this story go on a fishing trip to catch sharks, whales, and fish but during the trip Blueberry the family dog falls over board and was eaten by Harvey the Great White. So right after Mr.Hifal saw Harvey eat Blueberry he had to confess the bad news to his son Hary. He took it so badly so that night he when on his father fishing boat to catch Harvey. But when he lowered the net he falls overboard and landed straight in front of Harvey. So if you want to find out what happens to Hary I would read this book, Tales of the Great White I would recommend this book to ages 8-10.
