What a wonderful geography resource for upper elementary grade students for teachers and parents! This book gives ready to use task cards that a teacher can use in his/her classroom as a free time activity or as part of a lesson plan. The task cards list websites featuring many different countries and questions that prompt the student to explore. The questions are thought provoking and require critical thinking skills.

Unfortunately, websites are added and deleted every day, so this book can become outdated very quickly. Even so, it is a great book to be used as a tool for teachers to introduce students to explore the world on the internet.

This book is funny and true to life. It is as heart warming as it is believable. My mind and body was tingling with arousal from the vivid descriptions.
PS The first porn movie they produced was hot and hysterical.

Plowing New Turf on the Net by Gary Schneider Associate Dean, College of Agricultural Sciences & Natural Resources University of Tennessee, Knoxville

From its title, you would correctly assume that this publication is directed primarily toward farmers and rural residents. The Farmer's Guide to the Internet is intended both for farmers who don't own a computer yet and want to learn about the Internet and for those who are seeking Internet access or new Internet sites.

However, almost anyone could profit from this easy-to-read book. Although many of the Internet sites listed are agriculturally based, many would also interest a larger audience. The sites Include topics as varied as arts and science, business and finance, computer resources, health, history, home and garden, law, sports and recreation, and tax information, to name but a few.

The first section of the book lays the foundation for using the Internet. In a non-intimidating way, it guides the reader through an explanation of the Internet and the way it works. It then explains the five basic Internet services that most people use: e-mail, mailing lists, news groups, chat rooms, and the World Wide Web.

For Beginners, this guide covers everything from purchasing the computer and modem to securing telephone connections and obtaining the appropriate Internet software. It offers helpful tips along the way, such as which electrical surge protectors to choose, how to deal with noisy telephone lines, and how to keep long-distance charges to a minimum.

The second part of the book lists more than 2,000 Internet addresses. These are indexed by subject, such as crop resources--covering everything from fruits to nuts to vegetables--and livestock resources, encompassing beef, dairy, goats, poultry, sheep and swine.

The guide also lists agricultural companies, magazines, organizations, and news groups, as well as land grant universities in every state. Readers can find information on agricultural markets and prices, pesticides, precision farming, and soil and water. The book also lists sites for accessing current weather conditions. Having all of these topics in one handy text saves a great deal of time and allows the reader to bookmark favorite sites.

The final section of the text contains material on Internet service providers, rural Internet access, PCs and Macs, and Internet software for Windows 3.1, 95, and 98.

If you are looking for one book that will help you get started on the Internet with the least possible pain, choose The Farmer's Guide to the Internet. If you are already an Internet user but would like to get a quick update on new Internet addresses, look no further than this manual. It will serve you well.

Bringing Down the Image

Review Date: 2001-06-05
Until 1995 online bulletin boards were where to look for digital images. Now images are there for viewing and capturing from image-collecting artists, enthusiasts, government, libraries, museums, news magazines and organizations, stock photography agencies, and universities; and image-providing commercialized consumer services [especially for freely distributed, public domain, royalty-free], commercialized information professional database systems, graphics professional systems, and Internet FTP, Gopher, Usenet and web. It is important to capture any information available with the images about contacting rights holders, getting technical information or just retracing steps. Author Paula Berinstein also cautions that digitizing divides an image into units and gives each unit only one color and shape; that scanners are usually set for an average, but one-at-a-time scanning reproduces differently from the original too; and that software viewers should be capable of rotating images, printing sideways, and zooming out. Her book reads well with Adele Droblas Greenberg's DIGITAL IMAGES and Lois Swan Jones' ART INFORMATION AND THE INTERNET. With her concerns over copyright and ownership, it also leads into Mary Hutchings Reed's THE COPYRIGHT PRIMER FOR LIBRARIANS AND EDUCATORS and Charles C. Sharpe's PATENT, TRADEMARK AND COPYRIGHT SEARCHING ON THE INTERNET.

This book accompanies an IMAX film of the same name. Exquisite in-detail look at the Qin dynasty. Although one of the shortest dynasties, it was arguably the most important in Chinese history. Gorgeous photo dramatizations of true (and purported) events courtesy of the Xi'an film studio as well as many pictures of historical artifacts. It gives an introduction to Qin Shihuang, his army, his advisors, his laws, his public-works projects, palace intrigue and his legacy. The book outlines the exciting and dramatic detials of what it was like to live during the Warring States Period, the Qin and early Han dynasties. The authors have truly poured a lot of thought and care into writing it.

An actor's life
by David Barry
Authors OnLine Ltd
19 The Cinques, Gamlingay, Sandy
Bedfordshire, SG19 3NU, England
Genre: Autobiography
[...]

Are you interested in the real life stories of real live actors? If you are and are particularly interested in British actors, you'll certainly enjoy David's story. It is a book about significant events and people in his acting career of almost fifty years including theatre, film and television.

The basic format of this autobiography is somewhat of a journal which he started in 1998 when he agreed to be in the Bill Kenwright production of Funny Money which toured for 16 weeks and is described as "The Tour from Hell." Scattered throughout this journal are flashbacks about his childhood experiences while touring Europe in the play Titus Andronicus with Sir Laurence Olivier and Vivien Leigh. David was fourteen at the time, and it was the summer of 1957 when Peter Brook's bloody production had people fainting in their seats.

David starred as Frankie Abbott in the hit television sitcoms Please, Sir! and Fenn Street Gang in his early twenties. If I were a theatre goer and more familiar with British entertainment, I'm sure this book would have been more meaningful to me. As I am familiar with Sir Laurence Olivier and Vivien Leigh, I found the flashbacks about the group's tour through Europe to be of particular interest.

David Barry is a very talented man and his writing is a natural extension of his talents. The autobiography is well-written, entertaining and I'm certain will appeal to his fans. I do hope he will write another book with more personal information about himself-his talents, how he studied and prepared, his goals, his family, the problems and realities of living an actor's life, and how one finds the faith that there will be another play . . . when the tour has finished.

In addition to Flashback, the author has written Each Man Kills. Thank you, David, for sharing part of your life with us.
