I bought three books to use in order to get fully acquainted with the electronic commerce field. Zilliox's was clearly the winner, and as a result of its broad(er) coverage, I was able to get everything I needed from this one title. It ended up being the only book that I actually used to really get started and implementing our web strategy. It's well written, concise and clear.

As a mid level manager, and working with executives in order to coordinate our small firm's entry onto the Web, I needed a concise guide and "how to" on the topic. This was the only book that I really needed; I'll donate the others to the library. The flow of information, website methodology and hints were very good. The author's writing style is inviting and pitched at the right level for someone who understands what the Internet is about, but who needs a better and deeper insight into how to approach it given the myriad choices that every business person is faced with. I rank the book at the top of the lot.

There is a lot of information in this book, lots to read and it is very in depth on the subject of copyrighted materials. What is very convenient is that the book includes a CD which has all of the forms that you will need to seek permission for various copyrighted materials. There are few books out there that will answer so many topics related to this subject in the detail that it does.

A Must-Have Reference for Anyone Unclear about Copyright Issues

This is an excellent, time-saving reference that explains the process of "getting permission" in plain language and demystifies most of the myths and assumptions surrounding copyright issues. The author goes beyond giving general advice on how to get permission by providing step by step instructions and easy-to-use forms. This book should be read before starting your creative work...it'll inform you of what's legal and what isn't.

Ken Reaves has written an incredible book geared toward a necessary topic --- family-friendly Internet surfing. I serve on Ken's staff at First Baptist Church in Clewiston, FL, and I know that this has been a passion of his for some time --- and I praise God that this has come to fruition.

As a youth minister, I know that teens are online constantly. 98% of my youth have E-mail addresses. I also know how important it is for parents to monitor their child's Internet activities. What I like about this book is that Ken has provided practical, easy-to-understand (how often can you say THAT about a computer book?) ways to help make surfing the web safe and fun.

This is a good volume.

I've been working on building home and online based businesses for a long time, and I found this to be a very thorough resource that detailed the entire process from start to finish.

Also, even for veterans in business-building concepts, there are some great ideas in here to take you in new and successful directions.

Solid, practical advice for new entrepreneurs going online.

A no hype, tell it the way it is homebased business book. Especially good was the section on starting a micro-business on the Internet. Lots of do-it-yourself information to keep costs low. The cybermarketing success secrets alone are worth the price of the book. Very helpful for first time in the business world entrepreneur. Good value, in my opinion.

This book has some of the most practical information available for the medical student or resident. The book has very good content without being overridden with details. While geared towards the inpatient aspects of internal medicine, much of this information (vent settings, preoperative cardiac eval, post op fever, ekg's, etc) is practical for any student or physician in an inpatient setting. If you read this you will be a star on rounds. Having just taken Step 2 CK, I can also say that this book is very high yield for Step 2 CK as well the wards.

Only an exhibition could add to this book!
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 1999-10-27
I had the pleasure of meeting Diane Cook and her husband Len Jenshel when they exhibited some of the photographs from this book at The University of Akron's Emily Davis Gallery. In fact, I actually bought the book directly from them (so my copy is autographed, nyah-na na naaaa na!), and believe me, nothing short of the exhibition and lecture from the photographers could add to the experience of this book. The two photographers are stylistic complements to each other. She works primarily in black and white with a highly technical by-the-book precision, while he works in color using a more freewheeling, seat-of-the-pants approach. The result is that this book never gets boring. The wonders of the various vistas are capably described in a previous review, and I most heartily concur with the reviewer--if anything, he did not wax poetic enough.

But this book contributes more than just a wealth of memorable images (less than 1/10 of the photos from this project that the couple felt were "must use" images). There are stories behind each photo; reading the notes section in the back is a must, but I would suggest that you read it as you peruse the book...the *second* time. Just let the images impact you first, and *then* find out the deeper meaning behind the picture. These notes are not mere technical erata; they create an atmosphere, bespeaking how a certain sacred place has a given effect on the local populace, recalling the curiosity about what sort of people besides photographers would seek out the beautiful desolation of Yellowstone in winter, giving some idea of the true and very active power of some of these places--no still photo can convey the experience of the noise of a lava flow 25 feet below drowning out helicopter blades 5 feet above, or Cook's realization at one point that she had accidentally strayed onto a candy shell-thin layer of cooled stone over molten rock, and to stop walking would have meant instant death--as instant as the next step might also bring. The layout is superb, maintaining a strong sense of organization, even as each new photo delivers something not hinted at by those which came before.

The book's only drawbacks stem from situations which are technically impossible to resolve. While the reproductions of the photos in the book are of the highest quality, nothing can compare with seeing the actual prints themselves, and I consider myself fortunate to have been in a position to compare the two. Secondly, the photographers themselves do not come with the book. Their extended anecdotes and recollections, and the affable, off-the-cuff manner in which they relate them only served to enhance the experience of viewing these images.

This is environmental photography with an edge.

This is not just another nice looking landscape photo book. It is a visual description of our (amid uneasy) relationship with Nature as much as a celebration of its beauty. An example illustrating my first point can be seen on pages 32-33. Cook's gloomy black-and-white image showed a house buried in an endless span of dark solidified lava, a lifeless and helpless situation. Jenshel's color work on pages 40-41 included not only a closeup of a scarred trunk but the mass destruction of a forest as a result of Mount St Helens' eruption in 1980. Yet life is showing resilience as fresh vegetation was growing out of the ruins. Cook and Jenshel often present more than one image of the same vista allowing the reader to appreciate the vastness of the place from various vantage points. Their series on Mount Blackburn, Alaska, is a magificent and breathtaking illustration (pages 54, 56-59),a reminiscent of Ansel Adams.
Unlike many photographers who insist on capturing landscapes under natural lighting or occasionally with fill-in flash, Jenshel dared to be different. On page 67, for example, he illuminated the rock in the foreground with his car's headlight. By doing so, he isolated the foreground from the silhouette of the distant Ship Rock, New Mexico, giving the viewer a sense of depth while using the highlighted rock to echo the shape and the color temperature of the approaching storm cloud. Then there are the pyrotechnic extravaganzas of active volcanoes in Hawaii. Each image reminds me of the primordial force that once shaped our continents. This couple have demonstrated a true virtuosity in landscape photography.
Apart from its stylistic and ethereal quality, the book contains enough information on volcanoes for a lay person like me. It even included a glossary of terms commonly used in volcanology. The layout of the entire volume is neat and well thought out. By the time I turned to the last page, I kept asking for more. You can find heaps of landscape pictorials around these days but very few can be so exciting and educational to read or should I say 'To See!'.

This book is an excellent historical review of the computer and telecom technologies, and it is a must-read for anyone interested in the convergence of technologies, surely the most important phenomenon of the next century. Uncomfortably accurate

Review Date: 1999-02-10
This is perhaps the best book of it's genre on accessing the federal government. Far too many of these books focus on the "how" to access the federal government. This book focuses almost entirely on the "why". A majority of us do not realize the subtle reasons we all wish we could hack into the federal government, the needs to control the monetary flow of the richest nation in the world, a need that we all share as a human beings. This book helps us explore our relationships with and perceptions of wealth. We learn to accept who we are in the scheme of cash-flow thus allowing us to be comfortable with ourselves as we plow a cement truck through the walls of the federal reserve. Other related titles are "How to Commit Suicide Fast", "If You Thought the Government Was Watching You Now...", "Getting in Touch With Your Lust for Power, Wealth and Corruption", "The Whitehouse's Favorite Lapdance" and "Spiking the Punch at the State of the Union Address".

Handy compendium.

With this guide, you can get the text of presidential news conferences and proclamations, follow sales of dairy products, study the CIA's assessment of Ethiopia, research breast cancer, download images of earth taken from Space, investigate Department of Justice crime statistics, and more.
The guide is divided into easy-to-use sections such as Defense, Foreigh Affairs, Energy, and the Environment, then the various sites listed with access information and helpful comments.
There is a wealth of information available FREE from the U.S. government, and this work is a handy and very useful tool for accessing it.

Strengths: This book has screenshots which are easily readable but are a little lackluster in terms of visuals. This book has a nice objective oriented listing in the inside cover of the front cover page as well as a nice website resources listing on the inside of the back cover. The index is nicely done and a helpful glossary is included. The Chapters are well thorough out and and have easy to read numbered tutorials. A few tips and notes are sprinkled within the chapters. ) Good solid information for both Macintosh and PC/Windows users was well done. The index is well written.

Weaknesses: The book has only black/white text which makes the chapters a little drab. There a few screenshots and they don't have screen pointers or anything else within these to explain how to use hardware or software.

Introduction

Who would have thought YouTube would have been such a success. But it has "blossomed" and grew. Even now it is changing how we think and display all videos. Also our elections process have integrated with YouTube for video conferencing . While I have started working with Youtube, I still have a lot to learn. But I think I found a real good book to improve my work with YouTube that could also help you. It is called How to Do Everything with YouTube. While it might not explain all you need to work with Youtube, it sure is a great one to start out with or improve your "Youtubing " skills.

The author is an author, filmaker, has worked extensively with video editing , hardware and software and has created his own films and videos. While my experiences include these on a much more rudimentary level as , I have much to learn. I wanted to see what else I could learn from his much more extensive experiences especially how to use Youtube in many ways. And his experience and knowledge are evidence in many ways throughout the book.

There are only 7 chapters but they are packed with useful information. These include starting off with YouTube; Shooting professional-quality videos; learning how to edit your videos with Windows Movie Maker, iMovie, and Remixer; sharing and uploading your videos; joining the YouTube community and sharing ; customizing your YouTube Channel and the utilizing of special tools and finally publicizing and promoting your YouTube experiences. While I have dabbled with YouTube, the book let me know more of my potential.

What I particularly liked is his information about adding audio tracks with AudioSwap, helpful hints on using lighting and adding sound and special effects. Learning how to create a short film, vlog, or video mashup was very insightful. Optimizing and uploading, creating playlists, subscribing and customizing channels, and participating in groups and ways to promote the audience had some really helpful and sensible ideas.

Conclusion

The black on white text and the lack of color within the chapter makes things a little dull. But while the dull visuals do not "stand out" the insightful chapters do. What I enjoyed about this book is not only the breadth and depth in which the author explains how to use the hardware and software information but even more importantly, specific helpful techniques concerning what kinds of videos to create with YouTube directing your messages, ideas, creativity and more. The screenshots will not explain visually how to use YouTube especially if you run into a little trouble. But what I have found YouTube is not that difficult to use and this book can help start and master using the Video editing and sharing capabilities. If you need more information another book may suffice.

As a confirmed Macintosh user, I like that the author included information about iMovie 6 and the new one iMovie 8, as well as PC/Windows related information. The author includes a section about the compositional use of video involving "the rule of thirds". I thought this was really nice as I found this idea this technique only used for photography. It is "little" specific gems, like this, that are integrated throughout the chapters and really make this book a very good one for learning about YouTube.

In short, this book is "crammed" with good solid information that will not only have you " up and running " in no time but also help you in your improvement of your YouTube movies, ideas and creativity. Mostly for novice or intermediate users, even Advanced users may learn a trick or two as I did.
