I purchased this book for a friend who was new to the internet, but I couldn't resist cracking it open. The book is layed out in a very clear, concise format, if you're interested in a function of Yahoo!, there is probably a chapter devoted to it. I was amazed at the versatility of the site...I used the free email, messenger and companion, but had no idea that there was so much more to do on Yahoo!. I love Chess, now I can play online. I love getting up-to-date sports scores, now I can get them through Yahoo!. I love to buy through my computer, now I can comparison shop from a single web site, all through Yahoo! Shopping. If you want to save time and find out everything you can do with your computer, then this book is an excellent way to learn.

If, like me, you make your "home" in "Yahoo! country" or you're new to the neighborhood, you've probably found yourself overwhelmed by the hundreds of things to do and points of interest that should be taken in. But, with so so little time and so much to do, where do you find the assistance that you need? Pick up a copy of "How to Do Everything with Yahoo!" and you'll be on your way.

Unquestionably, this book is the answer. It is jam-packed with 500 pages of information on every conceivable neighborhood and how to get the most out of each one. Whether you are a Yahoo! newbie or a longtime resident, you shouldn't be without this book.

Get to More Outstanding Trek Sites in Less Time!
Helpful Votes: 8 out of 8 total.
Review Date: 2000-11-09
This book is an essential resource for all Star Trek fans who can use the Internet.

Let me explain why. Search engines have many weaknesses. They only check for certain key words, and they rank order the output in very long lists. For specific details on one page inside of a site, search engines are usually unable to help you. But perhaps the biggest weakness is that you have to think of the right things to search for.

As much as I love Star Trek, I would never spend hours using 20 different search engines and every word I could think of to try to find the best sites. Also, I wouldn't want to plow through a lot of lousy sites. I would simply give up, and not go further. That would be a mistake.

Star Trek is so popular that there are many more sites and types of sites than you can possibly imagine, and certainly many more than I ever imagined. For example, the book lays out all of the cast and characters of all the series and movies. It turns out that you have many sites to choose from (both in the U.S. and in other countries) for each character and performer.

Let me share a story with you. I was sitting at a table in a large meeting room a few years ago with an empty seat next to me. Dinner was about to be served. A nice-looking gentleman asked me if the seat was taken, and I asked him to please sit down. About 2 and a half seconds later, I realized that this was George Takei (Sulu to Trekkers). Well, I had a tremendously enjoyable three hours talking with him about his acting career, his interests, and current projects. Mr. Takei proved to be highly intelligent, gracious, and a real pleasure to be with in person. Now, I have to assume that my other favorite actors and actresses from Star Trek are not going to make themselves available to me in this way, but I can now use this book to visit Web sites and have experiences that will be somewhat like my wonderful dinner with Mr. Takei. I hope you will enjoy those visits as much as I did mine with Mr. Takei.

After you visit the sites for the cast and characters, you can always go to the film and television series sites. From there, you can find the best discussion sites for your interests. You can further visit the best multimedia sites.

I didn't realize that there was original Star Trek art on-line, and look forward to examining it. You can also acquire lots of Star Trek software (for cursors, fonts, icons, screensavers and wallpaper), plus directions for how to save and use them.

If you like to collect characters, there's help for you, as well.

If you are into Star Trek games, there are sites to help you "solve" whatever is stalling your progress.

But if you are like me, you will be fascinated by the section that begins on page 179 on how to build your own Star Trek site. And with a better sense of what is and is not available now, you can create a better, more intersting site.

We all know that some sites on any subject contain objectionable material. The listing of all the sites in this book tells you wish ones to avoid for this reason. Also, if you are screening sites for your youngsters, you can use this to avoid sites with adult material on them. So your young Voyager fanatic can trek safely in Cyberspace with your help.

After you realize what is available on-line about Star Trek, I suggest that you plan a regular schedule of voyages to help increase your enjoyment. As you do, be sure to pay attention to the chronology of Stardates in this book to help you keep what you are viewing in order.

Star Trek is all about the idea that the only limitations are the ones that we accept in ourselves. I hope you will use your Internet voyages to reaffirm your faith in that belief. Also, ask yourself where you are limiting yourself today. And then begin to eliminate those limits.

Be unbounded in your mission (except by the Prime Directive)!

We presently teach the Internet in our InfoPaths: Pathways to Information programme. This is our information literacy programme to both the general public and librarians. The information in this book is presented in a simple and clear manner. We found the summary and screen dumps useful not to mention the step by step guide to doing hands-on exercises. Certainly the authors knew what every information specialist needed! This book has become our "bible" and has been referred to often. Highly recommended.

Andy Eddy's wild, wild web tour may be a few years old, but it's no less entertaining. It's still an excellent primer for those just starting to use the Internet for entertainment, and details a number of basic Internet tools (Telnet, etc) and how to use them--but more importantly, why you'd want to. From massive online role-playing games to Proctor & Gamble's unbelievable list of registered domain names (not just listerine.com, but also badbreath.com--and they get worse), it's helpful and humorous at the same time.

This book kept me up all night, I couldn't put it down.

I was so tempted many times while reading to drop the book, run the the computer and start right then in the middle of the night.

Book is very easy to understand, not a lot of those fancy words you hear on CNBC or read in the Wall Street Journal. They take that stuff and bring it down to the level that an individual investor can understand.

Authors very motivating and relate their experiences in the market very well.

The authors of this book helped me get started in online IPO trading. I followed their steps and am finding huge success with IPOs! On my first trade, I bought 100 shares at $12 and sold at $20. I was pleased with this profit, because it was considerably more than I get from other "short term" investments. I waited for the right IPO to "freakin' hit!" as the authors say, and hit one that made me over $11,000 profit in about two hours on the first day of trade. I STILL can't believe it! The book clearly details everything you need to know and do to get into trading IPOs online. If you have more questions, the authors even have their own website where you can contact them and get your questions answered. They know their stuff! What a great book!

All the benefits and liabilities of a good encyclopedia

Theory, so called, is vast and complex and historical and contradictory. This volume is brief and clear and present oriented and structural. That the field and its survey are incommensurate is necessary, but the user should be aware of these limitations. The entries are clear and non-dogmatic but they must betray the liabilities of summary: concise average readings that hide problems, relations, and other voices. At root, modern theory is not intelligible without philosophical contexts that go to the pre-socratics, but that cannot appear here. Some choices of inclusion and exclusion seem odd: a separate entry for Orwell and none for Deleuze, for instance. But on the whole, this book is useful and well done.

I bought it which is my highest rec.

I'm going back into a Masters Program and plan to teach English for a living. Already this book has proved to be a valuable resource when surveying various schools of criticism. The cross-referenced index is a bit confusing, but this is a nice book that you may want to sit down with and read for awhile anyway. I've found some wonderful items in here, and it's fun to flip through, looking for previously unknown literary schools that may catch my interest. It's a great reference book, but also a compelling source of information and direction. I laid out the bucks for this book because I know it will be a handy reference for the next thirty years. Already it's directed me to some outside reading that has proved quite profitable. I'll keep this guide close by as long as I am a student of Literature.

Review Date: 1999-05-10
This wonderful book is a must-read for any person thinking about conversion, or in fact, any Jewish person who wants to delve more deeply into their Jewish life and motives.

So many "born Jews" take their faith and what is asked of them by G-d so lightly. Mrs. Zakar is a role model for all of us. The learning, the doing, the quest that fills this book should be an inspiration to any Jewish person. It motivated me to think about what has been given to us by G-d and how He has asked us to connect to him. It is arrogant to say, "Well, here's how I feel comfortable connecting and thinking about G-d. As long as I'm good that's all that matters." Mrs. Zakar delves into why this kind of thinking isn't enough for the Jewish people. She points to the fact that the Torah has already set up the "how" of being "good people" and the specific ways in which G-d wants us to become closer to Him.

Dr. David Kaufmann helped her with the "why's." What a revelation this man is. To so selflessly assist this soon-to-be Jewish person in all her thinking processes. To so patiently answer her questions and always redirect her thoughts to give her the most confidence. What an act of Ahavat Yisroel (loving your fellow Jew) to be such a support to someone. A source of knowledge and comfort. Dr. Kaufmann certainly is a shining example of what a Lubavitcher can be.

The reading just flowed along, as if we were taken on a journey. With Mrs. Zakar at the lead and Dr. Kaufman driving the team we just knew the trip would all lead to a good place. This book is also an example of all the good and worth that can come from the Internet. After finishing the book I felt so privileged to have been "let in on" this wonderful, inspiring, and life-changing correspondence

Absolute MUST READ for anyone thinking about Conversion

This book should appeal to: 1) software developers and usability testers, to learn from experiences with well-established proprietary and newer web-based interfaces to highly structured databases (billions, literally, of pages in Lexis and WestLaw); 2) content developers, web trainers and educators in all fields who wrestle with quality issues of web content; 3) observers of how professional communities use the web, as organized associations and for bottom-up information sharing; 4) amateur and semi-pro searchers who want to get tips from real pros trained in library and information science, as well as specific legal contents and methods.

Warning to workplace cynics: this is a no-Dilbert zone.

Example interview topics include: (software/usability) how are browser bookmarks used? are any web utilities widely adopted? (content/training) when is the web a trustworthy source of information? which comes first, in what circumstances: the web or fee-based services?

(community organizers) how do websites evolve to so well serve diverse professionals using cooperative and volunteer labor? (amateurs/semi-pros) how do people who search for a living in a rapid turn-around environment organize their work? (cynics) are there really people who still have long-lasting careers and love their work? how do they survive the nutty managers, mindless meetings, and constant change of fads?

Expanding the series and theme of "super searcher" books, this set of interviews goes more deeply into the technical aspects of legal research without losing the non-legal reader in either the terms of the field or the names of the content providers. My only complaint was the frequent reference to "stock techniques taught in legal research" which might have been better defined or compared, but I loved the phrase "build a search".

Recommended for paralegals, law students, and researchers.

Book Review: Law Law Law on the Internet: The Best Legal Web Sites and More
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2006-03-27
In October of 1995, only 40% of the "National Law Journal" 250[1] law firms had registered domain names, and only 10%[2] of the NLJ 250 firms had Web sites. A little more than two years later, the prediction that "it will soon be the rule, rather than the exception, that a law-related organization is on the Internet" has come true.[3] Today all but one of the NLJ 250 firms has registered a domain name, and 60% have Web sites.

Why is this important? Because it means that the Internet is finally ready for prime time! And it means that there is no reasonable way to include "all" of the law-related organizations on the Net in this book. So what's a perfectionist to do? The only rational choice is to make editorial decisions about who gets included in this book and who does not. So while earlier efforts focused on cataloging "all" of the law-related resources into one book, this book focused on cataloging the best of all the law-related resources.

For example, in the companies chapter, we include major vendors, focusing on those that publish something of substance - preferably for free - on the Internet.[4] We also included smaller companies who are, for one reason or another, making a difference on the Internet. Companies whose content focus is limited to a particular state are briefly mentioned in the reviews of each particular state. In the law firm chapter, we've included NLJ 250 law firms as well as small law firms that have made great strides in Internet publishing. We're open to suggestions about how to improve future editions of this book.

Our goal was to create a reference book that would help novices and net.veterans get the most out of their Internet experiences. For example, a new Internet user looking for tax law resources would get a very good feel for the best of the Internet tax-related resources by looking in the index of this book under "tax" for organizations whose practice areas include tax. Similarly, net.veterans looking to maximize their online experience - both as consumers and publishers of information - would enjoy our spirited reviews of all of the NLJ 250 law firm Web sites to see what is working and what is not.

Much has changed over the last two years. BBSs, Gopher, WAIS, and even Usenet are dead or dying. E-mail is becoming a more popular way to get the word out, and e-mail users are struggling with how to filter out the unwanted e-mail from the mix. And the jury is still out on technologies such as PointCast, which delivers multimedia to users' desktops, but not by e-mail.[5] On the horizon are new developments like Internet-based telephone and fax service, unified messaging, and video.

We have also seen consolidation in the Internet marketspace and the legal Internet marketspace. WorldCom has purchased UUNet and MCI, and Microsoft has purchased everything but the Justice Department. In the legal market, Counsel Connect was sold, bought, and consolidated with its former competitor the New York Law Publishing Company (of Law Journal EXTRA! fame). Reed and Thomson continue to grow their two huge empires.

In the final analysis, we're hoping that the information overload that is the Internet will still require somebody to weed through the millions of Web sites (and other Internet resources) to find the most important, most reliable, and most influential ones. And who better to help than the American Bar Association, whose mission in life is member services. We're pleased to be able to play a small part in shaping the legal Internet community, and we hope to be able to continue to do so for years to come.

Thanks for reading!

[1] The "National Law Journal" 250 (NLJ 250) is an annual survey conducted by the New York Law Publishing Company. This is the 20th anniversary of the NLJ 250 survey, which is the legal community's equivalent of the "Fortune" 1000.

[2] According to "The Legal List, Law-Related Resources on the Internet and Elsewhere," seventh edition, October 1995, Lawyers Cooperative Publishing, by Erik J. Heels.

[3] Id. or ibid., we're not sure; or perhaps ego. The key to being a successful visionary is to make lots and lots of predictions in print and then reference only those that came true.

[4] Trust us, if you build it, they "will" come. Content is still king. And presentation is queen, experience - kind of like a knight. OK, so we're reaching here. Chess enthusiasts will appreciate the analogy. More on content, presentation, and experience in the section entitled "Three Elements of a Successful Web Site."

[5] And you never ever know what juries will do. Check out Matthew Bender's review to see what they're doing with PointCast.

Erik Heels, author of the first serious Internet legal research bibliography, and Rick Klau, another Net pioneer, are lawyers who are uniquely well qualified to understand the Internet and explain it to others.

This book has many useful points, not the least of which is that it serves as a field manual for lawyers interested in establishing or upgrading their own Internet sites.

The authors' reviews of law firm web sites, at their own web site, have been deservedly influential.

In general, I am not enthusiastic about paper books that are merely catalogs of web sites. This book is different because the authors add value through analysis and judgment.
