I bought this book for my 14 year old daughter...a girl who is really a good person inside, but struggling with pressure from the world to be someone I'd rather she not be. Although we talk frequently about God and his hopes for us, I could see her tuning out. This book reached her in a way I never could--the format is just what teens go for. My daughter isn't much of a reader, but she couldn't put this book down. I would highly recommend it!

A great tool for the "Moving to the Internet" player

If you've ever had any concerns about taking your Blackjack game to the "Brave New World" of online casinos, this is for you. This is a very well written book that helps make the transition from "over the table" player to "online player". It very wisely avoids going into too much detail on the basic "How to Play Blackjack" and instead focuses on "how to take your existing Blackjack knowledge Online". I've been playing the game for a long time and have made a fair amount of money in the casinos, but this book took my earning potential to a new level by detailing how I can win at online casinos from my own home. (fewer flights to Vegas and trips to AC!)A lot of step-by-step detail is provided where needed, but it also balances this with some light-hearted anecdotes and quotes. (a great touch!)
Personal ID Security is covered in a lot of detail, as are legalities and etiquette. Definitely worth getting!

Although there is a description of how to play blackjack in this book, the main emphasis is, as the title says, ONLINE blackjack. While the basic rules of the game haven't changed, the fact that you have to go on line, sign up, give out information such as credit card numbers make the game just a little bit different.

This book is on those differences. The author talks about the various on line casinos, how to protect yourself from illegitimate operations as well as viruses, trojan horses, worms, etc. She lists about 170 casinos that she at least implies she has visited and found them to be worth recommending.

It turns out that all the various casinos use software from a few software vendors. She lists these vendors and discusses some points about their software. Finally, these software packages, and consequently the casinos offer many different versions of the classical blackjack game. She goes into these differences and talks some about strategy to use with each.

Note that on line casinos shuffle after each hand, so card counting won't work very well.

A great resource for any blackjack player, and the first book that's made me comfortable gambling onlne

This is among the best gambling books I've seen. I like to think of myself as a knowledgeable, seasoned blackjack player, but until now I've hesitated to play in an online casino. The privacy concerns, legal questions, and especially the fear of being ripped off -- It all made me nervous. But this book put those fears to rest. That's not to say that it glosses over the risks; it discusses them in detail so you know how to steer clear of them. Beyond showing you what to avoid, it tells you what to look for in an online casino, in a style that's both easy to read and intelligently written. I'd also recommend the book's sections on strategy to any new player, as well as to experienced gamblers looking to refresh their skills.

We've all heard the phrase "word-of-mouth success." But if you think such success only happens to other business owners and professionals, you're wrong. Word of Mouth Advertising Online & Off walks you through the simple steps you too can take to build that highly coveted online and offline buzz for your brand, products, or services -- no matter how small your budget. Author Lynn Thorne, who's clearly done her homework, makes a great case for abandoning traditional (pricy, hit-or-miss) marketing tactics in favor of more grassroots, customized ways of hyping your business or organization. As a bonus, Thorne's writing style is both conversational and hilarious, making the book tough to put down. A must-read for entrepreneurs and marketing mavens everywhere.

A Small Business Life Saver

Review Date: 2008-08-25
This book was a lifesaver for my small business, which was losing revenue due to the slower economy. I needed to attract more customers. But with my marketing budget depleted, I could not afford to increase the print advertising I traditionally depended on for new business. Word-of-Mouth Advertising Online and Off reveals why traditional advertising is failing, outdated, and has--in an effort to change with the times--given way to newer, more effective and economically sound forms of marketing.

I used to think that word-of-mouth just occurred naturally. But the book explains that since consumers have become the marketers, or a "public of one," creating effective "buzz" makes word-of-mouth advertising the perfect weapon for enabling small businesses, and any organization (including nonprofits), to be giant players in any industry. The information on the value of utilizing the Internet for low- to no-cost advertising is particularly useful and inspiring. Other informative chapters in Word-of-Mouth Advertising, Online and Off also explain:
-Why the marketing industry doesn't want you to read this book.
-Why 82 percent of Inc.'s 500 is already using word-of-mouth advertising.
-The five steps to creating word-of-mouth.
-The difference between marketing and advertising.
-The five steps to ultimate marketing buzz.
-Why author Andy Sernovitz says, "Word-of-mouth is the most profitable
marketing you can do."

Despite the exhaustive research and referenced information, this book is easy to read and understand because of the author's concise style, organization and sense of humor. The chapter summaries, topical examples and case studies, advice from established experts, and comprehensive glossary and index make this book a highly effective and valuable marketing resource and reference tool. I have no doubt that buying this book was one of the best investments for my business.

Talk may be cheap, but it works!

The economy stinks. Many of us have lost our jobs and we're desperate for a way out of this mess.
Here's a book that can help, really help, and it may be the last word on how to build a successful future, and one that doesn't require a whole lot more than using our best, and oldest, means of communication: Our mouth.
In "Word-of-Mouth Advertising, Online and Off," Lynn Thorne stresses, repeatedly, the subtitle of her book: How to succeed with "little or no money." Success on a shoestring is possible and this book shows you how to navigate the rocky shoals of word-of-mouth advertising, from creating a theme and a buzz, through email, viral and blog marketing, and even how to manage negative buzz.
By chapter five, she had my attention. By chapter seven (of her 11-chapter book) I was ready to get started. She proves that talk is cheap....and effective!

This textbook while being comprehensive enough,is enjoyable to read. As opposed to other major oncology textbooks, it provides definitive conclusions regarding treatment and is not overly burdening to the reader. Because Oncology changes so quickly, one could likely get by with this textbook and following the published literature.

An interesting and well written book about the life in West Africa, as experienced by a young white man four decades ago.
The book is written with a lot of humour and warmth, in spite of the more or less dangerous situation.
For me reding it was more or less as the commercial for Pringles
"Once you pop, you can't stop". As soon as one short story had been red I simply had to read the next one as well.
Superb and highly recommended book.

As a great lover of Japan, and Tokyo especially, I'm always looking for a book that goes beyond the usual touristy prose to describe what it's like to actually live there. In my experience these are pretty hard to come by once you venture beyond Donald Richie's contributions. However, this book really gives you a detailed look and feel for what it's like to be plopped down in Tokyo, all from a gaijin's perspective. I can't recommend this book highly enough.

Gwen Robinson charmingly tells of her year in Japan where her husband an academic appointment in Tokyo. So clear and colorful is Gwen in her telling that this reader almost feels that it is herself who is struggling with an unknown language, grocery shopping, meeting new people, discovering small intimate neighborhoods within the big city, and, finally, making friends and being a part of things. One only hopes that one would have the author's intelligence, empathy, good humor, and ability to laugh at herself.
There is considerable information here on modern Japan--the position of women, theater, education, the beauties of the countryside. In the company of Gwen and her family, we are with worldly people and can feel grateful to have their take on things.
This book has made me feel very ready to visit Japan myself.

Review Date: 2007-08-29
In the early 1990s Gwen G. Robinson spent a year in Tokyo with her husband, who was a visiting professor/consultant there. She could not speak Japanese. Many people, when thrust into an utterly unfamiliar environment, would withdraw. Instead, the author closely observed and described her surroundings and her own reactions to them. She writes about her bewilderingly high-tech house, shopping for unidentifiable food, venturing forth via public transportation, getting to know her husband's interesting colleagues, visiting other parts of Japan (and, briefly, Australia), entertaining also-bewildered family members, and living an "ordinary" life. However, Robinson is obviously no ordinary woman, and her writing reflects a deep knowledge of world cultures and a scholar's tendency to analyze her surroundings in that context. The often-funny and engaging narrative is interspersed with historical and linguistic bits of information. Her account of tutoring three Japanese women in English is particularly revealing of cultural differences. I highly recommend this book--it is like visiting Japan without actually going there.

Lisa has nailed the atmosphere on the head. Nailing seems to be one of her traits as she has nailed so many of 'those' kind of internet chatters, daters and players. Each person considering using the internet, or any other means of meeting someone of the opposite sex should read this hilarious and always informative book about the internet. The many personas she has portrayed shows her imagination, resourcefulness and overall great personality to explore those who fall for 'the baiting game'. Keep hammering, Lisa, there are plenty of nails left.

Lisa describes the world of Internet dating in such a comical way that you keep reading just to see what she does next. This is a must-read for any single woman, no matter how she's meeting men - whether she's using an Internet dating service, browsing the bar scene, or whatever. I also highly recommend this to any married woman whose husband "travels on business." And lastly, you men out there should read this one, too. Not only will you learn something about yourself, you may even learn something about women. Lisa's research really dug into the psyche of the human male - and left me in tears from laughter.

This book by far is the BEST pharm book out there for medical students. The book is easy to read and helps reinforce important concepts with ALOT of graphs and cartoons. I have this book, Katzung's Board&Review Pharm, and Lippincott's Pharm, and I feel like this book is the best for course work. It's overkill for board study, so I'll be using Katzung for that. Lippincott's is by far the worst, as there are TONS of mistakes in the book. So if you are a medical student looking for a great book for your pharmacology COURSE (again, not for board study), you cannot go wrong with this book.

Buying books is much more enjoyable and much more affordable now than it was in years past for many reasons. The prices of new books online are lower than in traditional bookstores. There is less overhead in an online bookstore. Also, in additon to new books, many online bookstores sell used books which can be priced much lower than a new book. Also, many books are OOP and the used book is the only way to find a copy. The internet has truly opened up a world of books to any interested buyer.

Cecil's textbook of medicine has been my favorite internal medicine textbook since my student years, back in 1991. The newest edition (22) features major changes to the book layout, which is very productive and makes reading, studying and even referencing it very functional.

The new edition features more colours than the previous ones, which are used as text "hyperlinks", referring the reader to other chapters and to online contents. The diagnostic criteria for a specific disease and the treatment are included into specific tables, characteristic of the Cecil textbook. This makes it even easier for the student to memorise and understand!

The new e-dition, includes a bonus cd-rom, which includes all the pics and tables of the textbook. They can be searched, categorised and even exported for powerpoint presentations. Excellent!

Furthermore, the reader gets FREE access to the online version of Cecil, at www.cecilmedicine.com At the website, new discoveries in medicine are included wthi highlighted text into the textbook, therefore the book is constantly updated to the latest medical discoveries and trends. You get to have access to your beloved textbook from any place in the world, without the need of carrying it with you.

In short, the new e-dition of Cecil, is a must for medical students, residents and fellows! Look no further, the best medical reference textbook is here.

A PERENNIAL GIANT; BUT BUY VERSION ACCORDING TO ISBN #

Since I bought my first copy of Cecil's Textbook of Medicine in 1971 - Then, called the Cecil and Loeb's Textbook of Medicine - 13th Edition - this book has been "my Bible" for basic Internal Medicine for many years.

I just purchased the newest edition (22nd): Cecil's Textbook of Medicine with Continually Updated Online Reference. The innovative changes in the new text plus the availability of monthly updates and review cases online make this edition of a perennial giant.

Reviewers of other editions have expressed their views that, compared to the new edition of Harrison's Principles of Internal Medicine (16th Edition, 2004), Cecil's Textbook presents less comprehensive clinical information and is inundated with basic science data that most readers "should already" know. While I agree that in some chapters the information in Cecil's Textbook is somewhat elemental, the inclusion of basic science material provides cohesiveness to each topic presented. In addition, anyone requiring more detained clinical information can search the literature quoted or choose a specialty book.

I bought this book through Amazon.com's warehouse for $100.00 because the box had been returned as being defective. I have only praise for Amazon.com. I received a brand new book and CD-ROM 4 days after my order inside a slightly bumped box. So besides a great learning system, I got a deal!

Potential buyers should be warned about the difficulty in choosing from the different versions of the 22nd Edition. I strongly recommend you compare the features of each of the versions available and ensure that when you order you are buying the one of your choice according to ISBN numbers and not to description, which I found to be incorrect too often.

Below I provide the purchasing data on the different versions to assit potential buyers to choose which version to buy.
