As the Executive Director of a mentoring program for elementary school girls, Strong Women, Strong Girls, I made the decision to utilize this book with all of our program participants. See What You Can Be offers girls the opportunity to identify their skills and interests and use those to imagine new possibilities for themselves and their futures. In addition to the girls loving the book, their adult mentors are also realizing that there are a lot of career possibilities that they had never imagined! This is a great book for programs designed to support girls and programs looking for mentor-mentee activities.

Tweens will love this book, and so will their parents!

As a teacher of young children, I can assure you this book is a hit. Tweens will be inspired to match their interests to unusual careers. The colorful graphics are extremely appealing, and the interactive nature of the book makes it pure fun. See What You Can Be would make any girl dream big dreams, and realize her passions and talents can lead her to a unique and satisfying career.

A great way for young girls to have fun learning about themselves and what they can be!

I got See What You Can Be for my daughter. She loves the interactive quizzes and activities "to see what she can be". I only wish there had been such a thoughtful and imaginitive book for self-exploration when I was a girl.

Great for pre-teens, teens and maybe even adults!

The layout is systematic and organized, yet has a light fun feel. It asks a series of questions - a modified "personality test" - to help you find some sample careers you might be well suited for, then gives you examples of women in those fields. This should be a manditory handout item for all "Take your daughters to work day" participants. It's great to see a book that gives girls concrete examples of careers they will have a good chance of sucess in, rather than the standby cliche "you can be anything you want to be, dear." This book is now my defacto birthday gift for young girls. It makes a great birthday party or sleepover game too!

Hip career book for girls a hit!

It's never to early to start thinking about "what you want to be when you grow up". For girls 8-12, See What You Can Be, is a great find. Unlike traditional books about careers, this title features activities to help girls determine what kind of job is the right fit, profiles of successful women in careers both traditional and untraditional (white water rafting guide, dialect coach, and transit planner to name a few) and mini job descriptions of jobs based on an "If you like..." distribution. For example, if you like math and puzzles you might want to become a cryptographer; if you like food and cooking you might consider becoming a food scientist.

The authors have put together a hip, colorful guide that will appeal to middle grade girls.
Quizzes, suggested activities and journal prompts result in an interactive experience, one that girls should find irresistible.

As an elementary school librarian, I highly recommend this title. It encourages girls to think outside the box about their futures in an age-appropriate, enjoyable way.

Sell with Soul is a lively, well-written and refreshing change of pace from ANY sales book you've ever read. Jennifer's no-nonsense approach to developing SOI's (Sphere's of Influence) is like nothing I've ever heard before. The book is organized in a clear-cut, well defined, and easy to read format. Jennifer's great sense of humor and her skillful use of illustrative anecdotes and blog stories will gently pull you through every page. Her style is guaranteed to bring a smile as you look at a whole new way of doing business.

If you enjoy time with friends, like to relax at parties, or if you just enjoy chatting with your buddies on the phone, you can incorporate those very past times into a cohesive and systematic way of doing business that will bring you returns for years.

Jennifer takes you to the heart of the matter in the very first chapter. Once that's established, she spends time with the nuts and bolts of listing, presenting, answering objections and other not-so-traditional ways of thinking and working through `traditional' issues.

If you like Real Estate (or any other kind of) sales and want to have more fun making more money, then you will LOVE THIS BOOK!

If you believe that real estate is a just game of numbers, this book is not for you.
If you believe the almighty dollar should guide your behavior, this book is not for you.
If you believe that your friends, family and neighbors MUST choose you as their real estate agent, this book is not for you.

If, however, you want to have fun selling real estate - and make a good amount of money doing it - without alienating your nearest and dearest, then I humbly suggest you forgo the free shipping and go straight to priority overnight. It's time for you to meet Jennifer Allan and get down to business.

So many agents struggle with how best to let people know you're in the biz without hammering folks over the head, becoming a pariah at parties or going broke with the latest throwaways (oops, I mean giveaways). Jennifer Allan has the solution - by marketing yourself soulfully, you keep your dignity intact. And get rewarded. Big time.

Enough with the postcards. Stop knocking on doors. Quit telling everyone you know that you referrals. Get this book. Have fun. Make money. What could be better than that?

Every agent should do themselves a favor and read this book

Although I have tried, really tried, to read other books about sales, particularly RE sales, I find myself struggling to find anything that resonates, much less inspires. When I started reading this book, however, I couldn't put it down! It is so jam packed with solid, soulfful ideas, I stopped using my highlighter on passages I particularly liked because the entire book was turning yellow.

This is THE handbook for any agent, whether first day rookie or more experienced, who wants a highly satisfying and FUN - yes, fun! - career of which they can be proud.

Getting Back to Basics

Review Date: 2008-07-12
In today's tough real estate market, you hear a lot of talk about getting back to the basics. What are the basics?

A wise mentor once told me, "Focus on the people and the money will follow". But following the traditional methods of prospecting sets you up to focus on leads, appointments, closes. People are tired of being "farmed", "prospected" to, and "dripped" on. They want to be treated with integrity and respect. People do business with people they like and trust.

In this book, Jennifer gives us the stepping stones we need.

1. In order to RESPECT our clients and customers, we need to know what we're doing and how to do it with integrity.

2. Knowing our market, learning more about our business, getting to know our customers - these are just a few things we can do to become COMPETANT real estate agents.

3. Being competent helps us to enjoy what we do; we become ENTHUSIASTIC about helping people with one of the biggest decisions of their life.

4. When we are respectful, competent, and enthusiastic, we can have CONFIDENCE that we will have successful career!

THESE ARE THE BASICS!

This outstanding book is more relevant for women of 2000 than ever before, because Sequencing--a term the author coined--has now become the preferred way of life for millions of women throughout the country who have predicated their own life choices on the concepts set forth in the book. This new edition of the groundbreaking study elucidates how women make their choices regarding fulltime careers, leaving fulltime work to mother their children, then developing a host of methods to use their training and expertise in new ways. Today this book is the paradigm for the way almost all married mothers choose to design and redesign their adult lives. It is a MUST for all married mothers, as well as for women contemplating motherhood.

I was so fortunate to able to stay home with my daughter full-time. Before I stayed home full-time, I had had a varied and lucrative career life. But being a mom was my priority. When my daughter went to pre-school, I started working part-time and now that she's in kindergarten, I'm working full-time as a librarian, and my career choice allows me to work around my daughter's school schedule. I can take her to school and pick her up after school. I am now working in my dream field, and my job is only going to continue to grow and allow me to advance. If I hadn't been able to take the time off for my daughter, I don't think I would have found such fulfillment in my career life once I decided to re-enter the workforce. This book is great support for Moms who choose to stay home full-time and put their career life on hold for a few years!

This is the first book I've read that gives a concise, accurate account of the dilemma professional women face once they become or consider becoming mothers. It provides welcome support of moms who are called to stay at home with their children during the precious preschool years and beyond. It also provides strategies on how women can later reintegrate their careers to meet their needs and the needs of their families rather than those of their employers. I highly recommend Sequencing to all working moms!

An important book for working mothers who want to stay home.

Review Date: 1997-07-11
This is an important book for working mothers who want to stay home to raise their children. It is a scholarly, qualitative study of 350 women who left their jobs to raise their families. Sequencing is unique, I believe, for its feminist critical analysis of Western (particularly American) feminist theory. The author argues that the model of feminism made famous by women such as Betty Friedan is based on the male or "fatherhood" model of working outside the home, with children raised by a substitute caregiver. Her problem with this model is that it excludes and avoids addressing the special choices and needs of mothers of infants and young children, many (if not most) of whom feel a very strong desire to be with and nurture their offspring, full-time. But rather than hurling simplistic and reactionary insults at modern feminists, the author constructively contributes to the Nature vs. Nurture debate and contemporary feminist literature. I did feel, however, that Cardozo's analysis suffered from the same classism and racism as Western feminism generally. I found myself searching for examples of African-American women and poor women who took very real and consequential risks, who truly sacrificed every possibility of achieving the American Dream, in order to stay home with their children. I found one example: one young woman interviewed made a tormenting decision to raise her baby in a ghetto rather than ship her off to a relative or daycare provider while she worked outside the home. But even though the author paid lip service to poor women, I ultimately felt like this book was written mostly about and for white, middle class, college-educated women who give up professional careers--not poor women who sacrifice everything--to stay home and raise their children. I kept searching for inspiration from an example that spoke to my own needs and my own situation, and didn't find it. Although the book at least attempted to achieve class parity, which is more than a number of others written on this subject have done, its classism and racism left some holes that deserve better attention. Nevertheless, Sequencing offers a unique and titillating twist on the discussion of modern feminism and is extremely relevant for mothers of the '90s. I highly recommend it. Sequencing, a term coined by the author, is the process ofmaking adjustments in your life and career so that you are able tostay home with your children during their formative years. There areso many ways to do this, from starting a home business to quittingwork altogether and reentering the workforce years later. This is theaffirmation that women who opt to stay at home with their childrenhave been waiting for. This book and philosophy have become the basisof a national organization called "Mothers & More"(formerly known as F.E.M.A.L.E.) that works as a support group forSAHMs and as an advocate for their rights as members of theworkforce...I can't say enough about this organization! It hasbrought an end to the isolation and routine of being a full-time mom.

Wow! I just finished this book & am amazed at the example Joe Massengale has lived by. If you're looking for a book on parenting & how to live your life, this is it. Character, determination, focus, love, confidence... what else can you say. Joe Massengale leads his life by example & instills all of the above qualities in his children.

I would encourage any parent or anyone looking for a blueprint on how they should live their life to the fullest to read this book.

As the father of two sons, ages 14 and 11, I found the book to be very inspiring, uplifting, and valuable. The authors deliver beautifully on the title's promise to tell a powerful story about how a father succeeded in raising six successful sons and the back cover's promise to articulate the ways in which the qualities of confidence, fortitude, pride, persistence, fearlessness, and focus are important for a successful life. But beyond that, the way the book is organized and the excellent writing gave the experience a depth of richness that was much greater than I anticipated and more pleasure than I could have felt justified in expecting.

Add this to your toolbox for parenting!

Joe Massengale is a remarkable man who's led an extraordinary rags-to-riches-to-rags-back-to-riches life...from fearing for his own poverty-stricken life in the days of lynchings, to working his way up to owning his own race horses in Hollywood. His biography alone would make an inspiring, thoroughly readable book -- but having it woven through such valuable lessons, and memorable object lessons, all in service of passing on hard-earned down-to-earth wisdom on something as crucial as character-development...well it makes this book all the more important. And how refreshing to have a "good for you" book that's so well-written! David Clow not only writes elegantly, but knows how to get out of Joe Massengale's way to let his subject's own distinctive voice come through clearly. That Joe Massengale happens to be African-American makes me wonder why Oprah Winfrey hasn't devoted an hour to him yet, but let me hasten to add - his lessons are UNIVERSALLY relevant. You do NOT have to be any particular color to "get" this wisdom, nor to need it. Turning children into responsible adults is the hardest and most important job in the world, no matter your color, age, station in life...or gender. Yes, I'm saying even moms can get something valuable from ths book. So could kids, single adults, you name it - anyone with an interest in the being, and shaping, productive, respected members of society. Only perfect people need not learn these lessons, and if you think you're perfect you need this book more than anyone! Need I mention, as I glance at the calendar, that this would make a HECK of a Father's Day gift?

Six Lessons for Six Sons, written by Joe Massengale and David Clow provides a enlightening approach to providing your children with important gifts to guide them through life. The authors have identified the gifts that help individuals believe in themselves and develop the strength to deal with the inevitable setbacks we all experience, and rise above them. This book is extremely well written, unpretentious, and presents, in a simple straight forward way, six qualities that lay down a foundation for living a rich, admirable and principled life. Massengale and Clow do an outstanding job of presenting these lessons in a way that should inspire fathers (and mothers too) to look at the art of raising children to be productive members of society. It stands head and shoulders above all of the self help books on the market today.

The six lessons are ones that I wish I had in raising my own sons.

This is a simply fascinating work that weaves business history, marketing theory and techniques, economic differentiation, and overt and unconscious racism. The most interesting dimensions (for this unapologetic Son of the South) is the isolation of the feelings and thoughts of nostalgia that the Quaker Oats image of Aunt Jemima invoked and Manring examines in detail. He follows the work of James Young and illustrator N.C. Wyeth's creation and adaptations of the image from conception to modern politically correct adaptation.

I'm not sure I completely buy into Manrings total thesis, since as a child I always just thought of Aunt Jemima's big old smile as normal, and after all, who doesn't like pancakes? Her image to me meant "proud," "good cooking," and "skilled" not contented servitude as Manring proposes.

Still, this is a fascinating and challenging read.

This book and its contextualization of Aunt Jemima or the mammy stereotype, as I refer to it, is well-written and thought-provoking. The material has been very helpful to me in exploring how this particular stereotype of black women functions in American culture and I will be using it as a key reference in my dissertation. Thanks.

Slave in a Box is a great study of the racism and sexism embodied in the birth of advertising. It is not only provocative but also chock full of great facts about the era--from the importance of paper bags in marketing to the story of an African American who actually wrote for minstrel shows. I am writing because I am a historian and used the book in my Industrialization of America class. The class generally hated it, because it is so detailed, but despite their response I recommend using it in a course. Our discussion was painful--black students said the book was "depressing" and white students denied that race had anything to do with the power of this trade name (they harped on the convenience, as if the stereotype was irrelevant!). I learned so much about them and so much about what we all need to do as teachers that I think it was a very valuable experience.

Fantastic book!

Very often, histories/studies of Aunt Jemima and the mammy stereotype are simply descriptive; this book does a great job of showing how Aunt Jemima's image and products were designed to complement/support ideal white femininity. My only criticism is that Aunt Jemima's presence on television and radio wasn't discussed enough. A great read for anyone interested in issues of race, gender and domesticity. I have recommended this book to many people, and continue to do so.

My middle name is Innes (no joke!!!!!) but it might as well be "inns"(!!!!!), that's how much I wanted to be an innkeeper, and Mary Davies' book is "inn" (!!!!!!) the right place "inn" (!!!) my bookshelf. No, but seriously, with my sense of humour and my wife Marjorie's overly solicitous manner and ability to project her prurient judgmentalism and dissaproval wordlessly, we had a headstart in that we were the perfect couple to run a Bed-and-Breakfast. I read this book before my first trip to Nashville and was miles ahead of others coming to town who had not read this masterpiece. It is by far the most thoroughly researched, informative, complete, concise guide to Nashville's music industry ever published, and should be on the best seller list. If you have ever considered a career as a songwriter or want to be a successful recording artist, you must read this book cover to cover. It's easy reading, packed with useful info, and written by a very nice, successful woman who lives in Nashville and knows the industry because she has worked in it her whole life.

This compact little book is a great read and full of great advice for songwriters and musicians looking to pursue opportunities in country music, specifically Nashville.

Ms. Bond is a music publisher and has worked in the Nashville arena for years. She gives examples on the Nashville number system (for reading/recording music), how to label your CD's and inserts and she gives the addresses and names of some of the best and more affordable recording studios in and around Music City. She also included the contact info for some of the top producers, publishers and A&R in country today! There's also a great section on all of the best open mic spots, restaurants and accommodations in and near Nashville.

In my opinion, this book is for someone that is seriously considering a career as a country musician/songwriter. And if that's you, then it's a great reference book to have in your arsenal.

This is a great book that fills a real need -- practical advice for anyone who aspires to be a songwriter or performer in Nashville. I work in the music industry in Nashville and am often asked for advice from songwriters new in town. I'm not necessarily qualified to give advice, so now I can recommend this book. One of the most interesting features is a chapter that suggests a week's itinerary, including where to eat lunch. Often people will come to town and not have any idea of what to do. They'll try to drop in on busy publishers, get turned away again and again and then go home thinking everyone on Music Row is unfriendly. Bond explains the right way to get your foot in the door. Again, highly recommended.

Her book covers many areas other guide books leave out, such as the importance of networking and where to go to make contacts. This concise, well-organized book enables aspiring sportswriters to understand the mechanics of superior sports coverage, and lays out what they will need to know to effectively contribute to a publication. The book is excellent at describing not only what reporters face when covering events, but also how to translate knowledge so that editors and general readers get the most from the story. The book is especially good at providing tips on preparation, and it deftly diagrams how different types of stories are composed. The book also includes many useful definitions, abbreviations, and checklists. All in all, Steve Craig's book is just what a young writer needs to bring his or her talents from aspiration into print.

I use this book with every band I produce albums for - even after 15 years in the music biz I learned a ton of things that helped me, and those I work with. It answers questions that newbies and pros ask all the time, and the advice is universal for studio and touring musicians alike.

Even if you just want to make music on your own, you need to read this book to get your basics on booking studio time, mastering, management and copyright dos and dont's.

The author's personal stories are funny and usefull. Learn from other's mistakes and your half way there with half the pain.

The book is excellent and very thorough and it even gave and old giger like me some insights. I mostly bought it cause I haven't played in a band or have been involved in music in years and I wanted to know if anything had changed --- according to this book it hasn't --- It hasn't? Well I need to make some extra bread and what better way than to do something I semi-loved (I say semi 'cause there were a few things I didn't like about playing gigs and the music industry) but after being semi-retired from my semi-professional career I realized it had its good points. My one concern is that getting gigs is not as easy as the book makes it seem, you have to be somewhat aggressive and if your not a born salesman (and don't like being one -- like I don't!) its a little tough. Well, armed with this book and a couple of more resources I'm gonna try it again --- here goes nothing! Good luck everyone!

An EXCELLENT source if you want to start a band!

I discovered this little book on the shelf of my public library. I took it home more in mind for my nephew, who has been in a few bands and continues to trudge along in the usual way--as many musicians always have--having a few successes here and there but living with big dreams in abject poverty. I didn't plan on reading the whole thing myself, however I soon found I couldn't put it down. Marty Jourard has a gift for taking a very broad subject--from finding bandmates, to the organization of practice sessions, music theory, songwriting, and management--and accurately painting it with bright colors and humor (much like the cover). His book clarifies music and business jargon and I think can give novice and season musicians a broad view of the road to their dreams. It is written in a light style with plenty of tips and stories from personal experience; it's worth every penny. The section on recording demos (from the initial inspiration, laying of the first tracks, to the final mix and mastering...and distribution!) is particularly interesting. Of course, I had to buy a copy for my nephew. I'm hoping he reads it. If not, I've got my dreams...

A must read for every engineering graduate, in or out of school

Every engineering graduate should definitely read this book. It is concise, lucid, and to-the-point.

I do not quite agree with the title in its entirety. We do learn quite a few of these things at engineering schools. However, in our relentless pursuit of gaining technical knowledge, we keep learning these things at a much lower priority. Chapter 15, "Having Fun" describes something, which is actually quite real. I have personally experienced this, where our professors would sometimes force us to go ahead and have some fun. Carl Selinger mentions many such important things, which the engineer needs to be good at including writing and communication skills.

Carl Selinger starts by referring to Dale Carnegie's famous book "How to make friends and influence people". This makes the reader, develop very high expectations about the book. Despite his best effort, his style does not live up to the standards of Carnegie. Unlike Carnegie's book, there are not many third-person examples or experiences, which have been discussed. This sometimes lends a preaching style to the writing, which can become annoying.

For someone who is inexperienced, freshly graduated and has never been taught any of the things which the book discusses about, will find it difficult to comprehend and realize the importance of learning these skills. This is primarily because Carl largely mentions personal experiences. A naïve reader might critique the book as being too one-sided. Overall, the book is very good as a reference.

The book was very readable and filled with insights. I was particularly fond of the chapters on assertiveness and leadership. The book has an excellent combination of helpful business and social tips, reasons to learn them, and methods to gain these traits for yourself.

Practical Advice for the Young Engineer
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 6 total.
Review Date: 2004-11-18
I am always looking for good information on our fascinating profession.

when I graduated from engineering school, there was not much written for young engineers getting their first introduction to the world of work. There were plenty of books on how to "think successfuly" or "sell more" that were targeted to the liberal arts/sales types. There was very little for those of us doing technical things. This is why his book is much needed.

Carl Selinger is on target for his efforts and employers owe him a debt as well. Managers benefit because they get a window on what Carl discusses with students when they attend his seminars (which I assume is where many of the quotes from students come from).

As we go through many of the current management fads, folks like Carl seem to understand that it is the "software" (i.e., the people) that make the difference. People skills are extremely important if you expect to survive. Every good project manager I have ever worked with or sharp youngster I have had the priveledge of developing "gets it" at this basic level.

The organization of the book touches on topics that most engineering schools cannot teach.

For those of you with lower grades in enginering school than you would have liked or those of you who know a recent engineering grad or a soon to be engineering grad, this is the book for you.
