How to be a Millennium Woman...Review Date: 2000-10-09
It has helped me to organize, set goals, learn when to say yes and when to say NO. It opened my eyes to so much, I was amazed at how little I knew about finances, saving, debt, goals, self-esteem and even Real Estate. The author, although a man, seems so in-tune to the struggles of today's women--single, married, divorced, widowed, single-parent--all women and gives answers and guidelines--not just philosphies and baloney. It is a "nuts and bolts" book that gives you step by step instructions on how to turn your life around and be prosperous, happy and successful and he does it in a lively and sometimes humorous manner.
I am so happy I bought this book-it has been very, very insightful. Take the time-you'll be glad you did.

The most impressive characteristic of the book to me was Mr. Boyd's enthusiasm for his message that drips from the book, and how his enthusiasm transferred to me. I found myself very motivated to take action and following his suggestions. Powerful stuff!

A Gold Mine of Ideas For Improving Your Life!Review Date: 2007-07-05
This is one of those rare books that has the potential to improve the lives of everyone who reads it and puts the author's ideas to work. It's amazing to come across so many "current" ideas in a book that was written nearly 100 years ago! It's clear that Marden's books and ideas have had a huge influence on many of the more popular authors such as Napoleon Hill, W Clement Stone etc.

An instructor's perspective...Review Date: 2006-03-14
This is probably the BEST text on this subject I have seen; so much so that I plan to look into their other books. Running the gamut from cold appetizers to a primer on ice sculpting to a discussion of centerpiece carving, this book provides clear concise examples of each process. The full color pictures are fantastic and a welcome addition to the instructions provided. If I was teaching again, this would be my textbook of choice.

I only wish this book would have been available when I started my career. Many communication blunders could have been avoided.

I really enjoyed reading The Mouth TrapReview Date: 2008-04-21
I especially enjoyed the many third party anecdotes and discussions that helped to explain your main points. In addition, I thought that the graphics, typeface, and style made the book more attractive than other self-help motivational books that I have read previously and therefore your style made it easier to digest the information. I couldn't help but generate my own hopefully correct answers to the questions at the end of each chapter.

"Following Your Hunch" (The Hunt for Red October)
The Importance of Improvisation (Apollo 13)
The Failed Promise of Heroic Leadership (Dead Poets Society)
Turning Around a Faltering Team (Hoosiers)
Socratic Leadership (12 Angry Men)
Turning Around a Troubled Organization (Twelve O'Clock High)
When Leadership Fails (Citizen Kane)
Morality and Leadership (Wall Street)
This is a book which I wish I had written. The authors are to be commended, first for thinking about writing such a book and then for doing it. The result is a brilliant piece of work. The writing style has snap, crackle, and pop. The insights are of great value as we are helped to correlate the circumstances in each movie with the daily circumstances in which most of us are obliged to function each day.
After you read this book, you will perhaps think of other movies which also could have been discussed by the authors. For me (what great fun!), I would nominate Paths of Glory, Zulu, Executive Suite, Command Decision, Tunes of Glory, Braveheart, Jeremiah Johnson, Pork Chop Hill, Pale Rider, and Patton.
If you are a movie buff, if you are looking for a great read, and if you agree with me that much of value can be learned about leadership from the movies, obtain a copy of this book ASAP.

recognizing and commemorating those people who inspire us and who add
fuel to our creativity so that we may achieve great things. The intro by Karen Pritzker and forward by Magic Johnson provide a great back drop to this
collection of hero stories. I really enjoyed reading the essays written by Muhammad Ali,Frank O. Gehry , Rob Warden, Kathy Eldon,Erin Gruwell, Senator John Glenn, Senator John McCain and Elie Wiesel. We all learn from example, and people who accomplish amazing feats all have heroes or inspiring individuals whose ideas or actions made those accomplishments possible. This book enticed me to identify my heroes and as a result I came a way with a positively warm feeling of
thankfulness.
I highly recommend this book for a holiday gift to those you admire
and as a gift to some of the people you know that might be searching for
some inspiration of their own.

Common Sense Career AdviceReview Date: 2008-06-09
He refers to successful people as "navigators." According to Dr. Jackson, navigators have three traits in common. Navigators: 1) Steer the course of their lives, rather than allowing themselves to be buffeted by waves of circumstance; 2) chart their course by cultivating the key qualities of passion, focus and resilience; and 3) take personal responsibility for, and are fully in charge of their lives.
Dr. Jackson concludes each chapter with a common sense summary he calls "Compass Points." The five Compass Points for Chapter 7 are:
1. Know where you're going and the results you want to achieve.
2. Create a plan to move through the gap.
3. Clarify the specific actions you're going to take.
4. Don't wait until events determine you're fate; take the initiative.
5. Learn from your mistakes and always keep you end state, or goals in mind.
There is a lot of common sense wisdom in these five statements. I particularly like number 4. I often tell my coaching clients that successful people don't wait for things to happen to them, they make happen the things that they want.
I also like the fact that Navigating for Success has a lot of stories and checklists. The book opens with a story about Dr. Jackson's childhood in Brooklyn - including playing stickball in the street and his fond remembrances of the long departed Brooklyn Dodgers. This book format both engaged me and got me thinking about what I need to do to continue my success.
In short, Navigating for Success is a very readable book filled with practical, common sense advice. Dr. Jackson is my kind of guy. I love what he's written and how he's written it.
Helping you find and execute your life planReview Date: 2008-05-21
After identifying and labeling personal styles, Jackson starts with helping readers identify their passions and what they need to do to achieve them. This discussion is not limited to work goals but extends to cover family, personal life, financial life, health and relationships. Next comes dealing with your own emotions, and after that, communicating with others (after all, you will need their help to achieve your goals). After that, he covers unexpected situations.
Like those who advocate spiral-learning techniques, Jackson returns to dealing with emotions, but this time he focuses on dealing with other people's emotions. Some of the examples he gives refer to dealing with emotions in a group setting. In keeping with the spiral-learning techniques, Jackson next discusses team building, empowerment motivation and conflict resolution. The last few chapters are shorter than the preceding ones and summarize the overall message of the book.
Jackson's writing style is crisp and concise - even the longest chapters can be read in under fifteen minutes. The paragraphs are fluid and the examples help understand the concepts Jackson is presenting. My only real criticism is that the text would have benefited from the services of an editor. It's not that Jackson's writing needs to be clearer, its just that there were a few annoying typographical errors that a conventional spell check would not be able to pick up (for example "sin" instead of "seem"). Fortunately, these errors are rare.
Overall, this is an excellent book. The content is well presented, and I like Jackson's approach of starting with the self and then moving to others. By using metaphors and symbols associated with sailing, Jackson provides a workbook blueprint that is inspiring, thoughtful and thought provoking.
Armchair Interviews says: Good book for those who want to be successful in business and life.

Live life as a navigator, not a survivor or victim!Review Date: 2008-05-13
"...For whatever dream you choose to pursue, this book will show you how to be a more confident and effective Navigator for success." Moss wrote, "Who are Navigators? They are individuals who steer the course of their lives, rather than allow themselves to be buffeted about by waves of circumstance, past experience or emotion. Navigators chart their course by cultivating the key qualities of passion, focus, resilience, and a sense of adventure. Rather than viewing problems as obstacles, they seize them as opportunities..." Moss also discusses the ways of survivors and victims, and analyzes the reasons for their failures.
"Navigating for Success: Passion, Goal & Action" has 7 parts: Steering Your Life, Mapping Your Course, Riding Your Inner Wave, Ship to Shore: Getting Connected, Storm Warning, Building Your Crew and Setting Sail. Each part is divided into several chapters with real life examples and a simple question section at the end.
"Navigating for Success: Passion, Goal & Action" has 137 pages. It is a useful book for those seeking business and professional success and striving to achieve personal goals.

Indispensable for many career changers!Review Date: 2003-07-09
This book is not for everyone. If you're a certified maverick (like me), or you haven't ever fit in to the corporate world, your efforts to apply Lassiter's strategies can backfire. Corporate managers know how to read between the lines. When you try to follow Lassiter's scripts, you have to know the tone to use and the body language to complement your verbal communication.
With that caveat, Lassiter's book is one of the most comprehensive and realistic I've come across. These days, she says, you can't just look for a job. You must proactively identify needs and demonstrate that you can fill them.
A few highlights:
Come up with some PAR statements: Problem, Action, Resolution.
When negotiating, it's not over till it's over! Keep your options open till you've got a written offer...even while you're new on the job..
Don't show that you're desperate!
Networking is the only way to make career moves -- and Lassiter actually offers tips for would-be networkers. Most books focus on simplistic networking tips that don't work for senior-level managers.
Her discussion of executive recruiters is superb -- and frank.
If you've got a track record in some organization, this book will be the best you can get. Lassiter doesn't say much about changing careers -- just briefly warns of the difficulty and says "not too often." She's really presented in a small book the information you might get from a high-quality outplacement service. I'll even forgive her references to Myers-Briggs -- you might score "introverted" and still be a great salesperson!
New career management classicReview Date: 2002-12-21
The book provides a comprehensive, cohesive, and logical approach to career management. Its highlights are: excellent use of humor, and a great attitude and style throughout; two dozen practical, but not overwhelming, "homework" exercises (with extra blank forms provided); particularly strong coverage of networking and negotiating; over a dozen realistic, short tales of people in different career phases; and excellent, up-to-date references to additional print and on-line resources.
I am a career and job search counselor who strongly believes that "it depends" is the answer to almost all job search-related questions. So, my favorite parts of the book are the many "caveats" that have been inserted. Just when you think Pam may have made a point a bit too strongly, she seems to quickly acknowledge the opposite view, or provide an alternate approach. That's nice work!
Realistic, comprehensive, practical, instructive, and fun, the book is a valuable addition to the career management literature.
