An Excellent Look At Customized EmploymentReview Date: 2007-11-28
The authors examine the roots of CE and lay out strategies for providing support services in non-traditional ways that bring each individual's gifts and talents into the forefront of job development. Explanations for frequently asked questions are both well researched and insightful. Strategies that are critical to successful job development - the use of discovery, job analysis and negotiation - are identified and defined in user-friendly terms.
This book goes a step further in navigating the reader through the array of viable resources that are often overlooked and generally misunderstood by both providers and job seekers. G/H/G take a close look at the important role that Social Security Work Incentives play in enhancing employment opportunities, and they articulate the role that business must play in successful customized employment when careers, not just jobs, are the goal.

The man makes the money. But he's not alone anymoreReview Date: 2008-05-01
As a mother of one girl I'm fast learning that things are much different in the world today than they were when I was a little girl. There is no longer the idea that the man makes the money and the lady stays home to raise the kids. It's not practical or fair for things to work that way anymore.
It is an absolutely fantastic way for them to learn about taking care of themselves now and in their future. This book is not a huge book, only 24 pages, so they aren't overwhelmed by it. This alone makes it much more fun for them to look at, read and comprehend.
The story line is great. It's a fairy tale so to speak so it captures little girl's attention right from the start. As the story goes along and Juana meets her business angel she learns everything she needs to know about starting her own business and taking care of herself. It teaches little girls that they don't have to rely on anyone but themselves to make it in this world.
With the story are wonderfully illustrated pictures that keep the girls interested. So for even the youngest girl who may not be reading just yet, they still get the point by looking at the pictures while someone else reads to them.
I know it seems like a young age to start teaching girls these types of life lessons. I even thought that maybe I was pushing them to grow up too soon, but after thinking about it I decided that I wasn't. It's never too early for children to begin looking to their future. It is important for girls today to understand that yes family is very important but knowing you can take care of yourself and a family is what is necessary.
If for no other reason than a great story and beautiful pictures buy this book for the young girl in your life. They will get something from it and enjoy the book along the way. No one is ever too young to learn. Why not have a little fun in the process?

Encouraging Young GirlsReview Date: 2008-02-25
I know grown women today who still think they can't make it without a prince coming to rescue them. This book encourages girls to find their own way, then perhaps their prince will come. In the first place, many girls are waiting until they are older to get married and start their families. And second, families have a hard time surviving without two incomes.
As a mother and grandmother of girls, I say, hurray for Daphne Nowell and the message in and her new book, Juana Meets Gabriel, the Small-Business Angel. You have a winner here!

Just for girls who will become business "women"Review Date: 2008-02-16
The illustrations, by the author's mother, help to move the story along. It would be great to see a few more business ideas that young people in the older age range might pursue, like walking dogs or babysitting, but as a blueprint for planning a future business it works well.
The suggested age range for the story is 4-9, but I think it has merit up to age twelve, and possibly higher in a program for at-risk teens whose reading skills are not at grade level. It would also be practical in an ESL program for its list of resources to for those curious about starting their own business.
With Juana and Gabriel, young girls will be well on their way to designing a life that won't fade to pumpkins and rags after midnight!

Pass It Around to your managersReview Date: 2004-10-29

Outstanding Fable on Leadership for New Technical ManagersReview Date: 2004-03-27
Years ago, most of these new managers were thrown into the fray with little training or mentoring. Today, that seldom happens. Instead, training courses and mentoring are almost always available. Yet, despite having more help, many new engineering managers continue to fail.
Lost and Found is aimed at providing additional perspective and information to help great engineers become great engineering managers.
Yet many new engineering managers may not want to read a "fable" about doing their jobs better. I hope they will suspend their skepticism long enough to give this outstanding fable a chance to help them.
Business fables usually don't work for engineering managers. First, they don't talk about working on technical projects. Second, they are often so simple as to seem insulting to an educated professional. It's like being asked to read Alice in Wonderland in order to manage better. Third, the situations don't provide any "aha's" based on general experiences. Fourth, the directions are often limited to one way to get the job done.
Lost & Found overcomes all of those problems.
Larry Parks has all of the best and worst characteristics of new engineering managers . . . and receives training, feedback and mentoring that just don't strike him as relevant. But as his project spins increasingly out of control and behind schedule, he realizes that something has to give. His family and his boss are both disappointed in him. As a result, he's given a chance to take time off to get his thinking sorted out. During that time off, he begins to experience the consequences of all the worst parts of his own management style . . . and tries out better ways to do things that allow him to enjoy better results.
The lessons are summarized simply as a Leadership Credo of:
"My Team Needs to KNOW
1. Do I have a clear view of the future I am trying to create, and does my team share that view?
My Team Needs to GROW
2. Are my team members more valuable to each other, to the company, and to themselves today than they were a year ago?
My Team Needs to OWN
3. Do the people on my team perform like hired hands or as if they're partners in business with me?"
In the story, Larry comes back to the office and uses these principles to turn his project around and improve his career.
While all of this is happening, Larry's mentor (who could be poster boy for how not to manage -- using Theory X) sees his career crash and burn. The lesson isn't lost of Larry.
After the fable is over, the authors do a fine job of providing brief guidance on other methods of working with a team to apply these three principles.
I would be surprised if I will ever read a business fable as good as this one for its intended audience. I recommend it without reservation.
As I finished the book, I began to realize that most business books would be more helpful if the authors focused more narrowly on a particular type of reader . . . rather than trying to help everyone in the same way. I hope these authors will write more fables, and aim them at other specific audiences that need help making the transition into effective management.
Good Theory / Good Practice / Good StoryReview Date: 2004-03-27
Lost and Found is different. Its plot is multilayered and compelling, and its characters more than just one-dimensional mouthpieces for reader and writer. Like other Sussman/Deep offerings, Lost and Found has sound content, presented clearly and tightly. This book, written along with Alex Stiber, takes the Sussman/Deep canon in a fruitful new direction. I'll be recommending this book to clients.
Find It And Read ItReview Date: 2006-01-03
The authors of Lost and Found understand this well, and instead of slapping together another forgettable binder full of diagrams and shop-worn quotes, they've structured a highly readable story that illustrates key managerial concepts in a clear and memorable fashion. It is hard to imagine anyone who has labored in the corporate vineyards not understanding and empathizing with Larry Parks, a man who has backed himself into a corner because he spreads himself too thin, would rather do it himself than teach someone else, and fails to understand the distinction between true leadership and dictatorship.
Through experience that is often entertaining and frequently less than pleasant, Larry gets a dose of his own medicine. The result is beneficial for everyone involved. Unlike almost every other work of its type, Lost and Found stands on its own legs as a book, the result of thoughtful structuring and exceptional writing. From the standpoint of a managerial tool, a document designed to help fledgling (and experienced) managers grow beyond their limitations and adopt a higher understanding of leadership, it is at the head of the class.

A MUST HAVE book for all Mediators!Review Date: 2001-12-03
Mosten's book, Mediation Career Guide, is just the book I was looking for to strategically guide me through deciding whether to go into mediation as a profession. The book is well organized and can be read cover to cover or as a reference guide. Some of the key parts of the book are 1) Deciding if Mediation is Right for You and 2) Building Your Career as a Mediator.
The chapter on deciding whether to get your law degree or not for mediation was an especially important chapter for me. I completed one year of law school and then decided to re-evaluate my J.D. path. I enrolled in SMU's Dispute Resolution program to help with my decision. Mosten's book is the only mediation book that directly dealt with the J.D. dilemma. The chapter did not tell me what to do or what Mosten thinks is best. Instead, the chapter asked certain questions about my background to see whether a J.D. is a good choice or not.
Mosten's book is a MUST HAVE if you are deciding whether the mediation profession is right for you and how to build a mediation practice.
Thank you Forrest (Woody) Mosten for this book and all of your contributions to the peace-making profession!

The Definitive Book on MediationReview Date: 2002-02-17
I have known the author since 1970, when he was a law student working part time for me in the foreign student office at UCLA. Even then he was thinking about how he might incorporate his strong social conscience into the practice of law. Ten years later he found his answer when he committed himself to becoming a professional mediator. For Mosten, mediation is more than an efficient means of resolving disputes, it is a way to work as a peacemaker at the person-to-person level. It provides its practitioners who are attorneys with an alternative to the adversarial nature of the legal system, which weighs heavily on many lawyers. Of course it provides the same benefit for clients. He makes his point about mediation as a peace effort dramatically in chapter one, where he states "...don't jump into a growing but still uncertain field like mediation unless you eat, breath and dream about creating peace and resolving conflict and are willing to risk everything to make it happen".
In addition to maintaining a highly successful mediation practice in Los Angeles, Mosten trains future mediators and he has established a nation-wide network of mediation centers. He also is the author of three previous books on mediation.
The author's purpose in writing the book is stated in the first paragraph of the preface, where he says "It was an uphill climb to build my mediation practice. This book is my effort to help you avoid many of the costly mistakes I made along the way".
The book is organized into three parts, each with several chapters, followed by nine appendices. In the first part, "Is Mediation right for You?", he covers the question of what it takes to be a mediator, such as being a good listener, patient, tolerant and neutral, flexible, and empathic, among other traits. In the chapter on "Education and Training", he discusses the question of non-lawyers as mediators. Mosten admits that lawyers have certain advantages, but he lists other fields which often provide a good background, such as therapists, business persons, teachers and clergy. Whether they come from the law or other fields, he states, extensive training in mediation will be required. Here Mosten goes into some depth on this subject which is dear to his heart because he wants "...mediation to be the first stop on the conflict resolution highway", which means having "...enough trained and experienced mediators available to meet this need".
Part Two, "Building Your Career as a Mediator" deals with the creation of a mediation signature, which includes advice on writing vision and mission statements to distinguish your particular practice. He also advocates having a board of directors to help with these tasks and to provide a sounding board along the way which he had earlier described as an informal group of persons whose judgment you trust. (He might more accurately have called them a "board of advisors). Another chapter, "Creating a Mediation-Friendly Environment", gets down to reading materials and arrangement of the reception room. Most important, he introduces the idea of the client library, described as a consumer-friendly collection of books, video tapes and other resources which will help clients learn what they need to help solve their own problems. This concept is related to Mosten's preference for informed client consent, and he reports that his library is well used by his clients.
Part Three is "The Nuts and Bolts of Private Practice", which covers topics such as finding a place to practice, naming your practice, forming strategic partnerships and networks. With respect to networks, he uses his own Mosten Mediation Centers as an illustrative model, in which he has established local mediators around the country as subcontractors. In the chapter entitled "Strategic Planning and Investing in Yourself", he gets very specific about the time and money required to establish a mediation practice, including a breakdown of out -of-pocket costs which add up to $57,000 over a five-year period.
Even though he has stated his desire to see a great increase in the number of practicing mediators, Mosten in no way sugarcoats the obstacles and challenges facing anyone who plans to enter the field. His candor, at times, would almost seem to discourage, but at least anyone who has read the book would enter the field fully warned. More important they will have read a well integrated combination of philosophy and nuts and bolts, each supporting the other.
This is a critical book for those contemplating a career in mediation, it is a useful book for anyone contemplating using the services of a mediator, and it is an interesting book for those who are attracted by the concept of mediation as a force for more peaceful interpersonal relations.

My Daily Mission... Success!Review Date: 2001-09-28
My favourite author because of his messages.Review Date: 2001-12-22
Og went from riches to poverty to riches. Read: A Better Way of Life. His story - how he went from a successful salesman to an alcoholic and "lost" his wife and daughter and lost his job. He was going to kill himself and a book that accidentally "fell in his hands" turned his life completely around. He later became editor of Success Magazine in the U.S. and wrote many books.
I suggest you read "A Better Way of Life" on how he went from success to failure and then back to even greater success.
However the best chapter in any all the books I have read is: Chapter XVIII in Mission Success. It is so good that I committed the whole chapter to my mind and I now recite it from time to time.

Pizza at Sally's Delivers!Review Date: 2007-09-29
The illustrations, "colored copies of photos, labels, and other ephemera" pasted on gouache-prepared paper have a toy-like quality, as if your Lego decals leapt from signs and trains onto the pages.. Coupled the informal font, the look is a relaxed photo realism. The combination is much warmer than most of the computer-generated images I've seen. Photos of Sally's (she's the pizza maker) tomatoes complement shiny drawings of patterned green leaves, and tall background buildings with luminescent colored windowpanes hint at the urban setting. "Sally the pizza maker grows tomatoes in her community garden in the city." This is an exciting setting for non-city kids who have never seen a rooftop garden. Wallington also skillfully mixes farm scenes with their destination: The neighborhood stores where Sally buys her pizza ingredients. There's a beautiful, atmospheric picture of the cheese shop with giant company labels hanging from the wall, and Wallington adds an unexpected lower panel that shows us the cows grazing many miles from the cheese shop interior. It's a bold montage that works extremely well.
At 11:00 AM, Sally--with her ubiquitous cat smiling up at her--begins making pizza! It's homemade of course, "Cut, chop, stir, and simmer. There are good smells in the air. Sally makes her tomato sauce." Yeast, oil, salt, and flour start the pizza dough, and we see a mixture of foods and measuring devices on one 2-page spread. At this point, I began to ponder a very serious question: Does Sally belong to the "through the dough" school of pizza-making, or whether she disdains such dramatics? (These two methods are hotly debated wherever pizza is taken seriously.) Culinary merits aside, I was thrilled to see that Sally twirls the dough--"Whoosh"--up in the air. Finally, "everything is ready to put together." As she layers the ingredients (the cat with its paws on the counter), Wellington uses some artistic license to bend health code regulations), hungry kids wait with great anticipation.
And the verdict? The pizza certainly looks delicious, and you can almost smell it as Sally slides it into the fiery oven. However, Sally's customers are the best judges, and the youngsters grab slices and close their eyes in pizza ecstasy. When the shop closes at 9pm, the chalkboard says "Arrivederci," and Sally and her little feline helper relax and enjoy a slice together. A truly kid-pleasing book might include Sally's pizza recipe as an après-story treat, and, as with the entire book, Ms. Wellington does not disappoint. There's much to savor in this sensational book!
