The Career Chronicles

Review Date: 2008-07-03
During the last year of high school, the most common question is "what are you going to do with your life". Somehow, within the span of a few months, you are supposed to figure out who you are and what career you'll have for the rest of your life. It's no wonder that many people go to college and change their majors several times.

Unfortunately, an even bigger surprise awaits the new college graduate. After studying for years, they come to grips with the reality of working. Often what is taught in school doesn't ready the student for the job.

The Career Chronicles takes a unique approach. The author has interviewed a number of professionals in a variety of popular occupations and asked the things that we all wish we could have asked before committing to a four year degree program. Information includes employment levels, academic requirements, average salary levels, college vs reality, the biggest surprise, hours and advancement, how they spend a typical day, and whether they'd do it all over again.

I was really interested in this book after reading the other reviews. I am an educator and am always looking for books that can help students or their parents. When I read this book, I quickly realized the importance that this book serves to those graduating from high school or those looking for a new career. There is so much valuable and rich information for each career. Of course, I had to flip directly to the education portion of the book to see what it had to say. After reading it, I realized how easy my first two years of teaching would have been if I knew this information beforehand. I HIGHLY recommend this book.

This book is unlike any I've seen. For college students deciding on a career, it is an excellent commentary about "real world" jobs, well researched, logically organized, easy to read. I teach in college and will definitely recommend it to my students.

What a fantastic book to read in helping one select a career. This book is subdivided by various careers including health care, law, architecture, education and IT. It gives the opinions of seasoned professionals where it describes the pros and cons of their career decision. The books even asks the professionals if they would choose the same career if given a choice. I hope that this becomes a necessary reference book for colleges and institutions that help people make a career decision. This book is an excellent tool for anyone deciding on their career path!

Where was this book when I was in college?

This is an excellent resource. It would have been beneficial had this book been written seventeen years ago when I was in college and trying to figure out what I wanted to do for a living. Much like many of the professionals interviewed, I found myself lacking the knowledge about and later the passion for the career that I selected. I purchased this book for my nephew that will begin college in the Fall. I took the liberty of reading this book before giving it to him and have now purchased a copy for myself and have decided to embark on a second career.

My first reaction while reading this book was one of surprise. I'd been expecting just feel-good inspirational stuff, but was pleased to find it dealing with the nuts and bolts of our changing world and the struggle it can sometimes be to survive in the new reality.

I'm a fan of various financial advice columns and shows; one of the topics that never fail to appear is how much longer people live today --- and the associated costs of doing so. CAREER OF GOLD addresses this issue head-on, as well as the taboo topic of age bias encountered when trying to finance a longer life, later in life.

It offers advice on how to deal with this mountain of a problem: climb it while you can. People will be surprised to discover that it's possible for the average person to function --- and thrive --- in the new world of global opportunities. I was fascinated to see how you can develop a new business, and tap into the tremendous growth potential of emerging markets like China, India, and Brazil. It's shown that the online world of the internet can be harnessed to create your second career.

The author provides the reader with support and encouragement in an easy to read and practical guide. Bracken provides examples, inspiration and concrete advice in defining your assets, determining a market, developing your "product", utilizing computer technology and more. This book is a great resource for baby boomers who want to follow the dream of making money doing what they love.

The idea of using your experience and knowledge to start a new career doing something you really like sounds too good to be true - which is probably what stops most of us from ever trying. Yet this book proves that we should try. Career of Gold provides down to earth advice on how to identify core skills which are very much in demand in today's changing world. The book then provides the tools and information to turn these valuable skills into real opportunities. It isn't easy but it's easier than you think. The book provides numerous examples of people who have tried and shows how using these techniques gave them the power to reorganize their careers successfully.

People are living longer and the quality of life is continuously improving in that extended life. The Career of Gold is not a get rich quick scheme.
However, most people will find it provides the information necessary to use their knowledge to find a career which suits their lifestyle and which they can enjoy and at the same time bring in extra income. The book deals head on with issues like age bias, gaining recognition for the knowledge you possess and using the internet as a gateway to the global marketplace.

Career of Gold is a valuable resource for everyone over the age of fifty looking to restart or supplement their career. It also provides many useful links to resources which most people probably don't know exist.

This is a very compelling and informative look at careers in technical theatre. Anyone interested in entering this field should read this for a realistic look at what you will be doing and what you will get paid! As a theatre technician, I can vouch for the reliability of the information presented. It is thoughtfully and clearly written. The interviews are interesting and helpful. Mike Lawlor never loses the sense of humor that is attached to a career in the theatre or to the people who have chosen to make it their livelihood.

This is a good book for those just starting out in the industry to get a feel for what these titled individuals of the production staff do. Even I, a "seasoned" pro, learned more than a thing or two.

If I had one criticism, it would be that the salary/wages information is not specific enough; I understand that it's hard to gather this data, but as someone entering into the full-time staff world for the first time, it's hard to know what I should expect when negotiating.

Careers in Technical Theater could have been a feature in our Arts section, but is reviewed here for its overview of the American professional theatre's job market opportunities - a rich listing of opportunities for any who would work in the theatre. It surveys everything from how to be a Broadway theatre technician to becoming a sound designer, makeup artist, company manager or consultant, surveying job duties, how to locate on-the-job training as an intern to break into the industry, and how to narrow a career focus to specialize in a desirable area. As such this is a top pick for any collection strong in career guides, whether it be a public lending library or a performing arts collection.

This is an excellent guide for anyone wanting to pursue a career, or just generally interested in theatre, "behind the scenes". It offers very well-rounded descriptions of the different types of jobs one can explore working backstage. Each type of job has its own section with compelete job descriptions, culled from a variety of working professionals. The descriptions include what one can expect in different working conditions and even what might be expected concerning pay scale. It is a very realistic view of a life in the theatre and does a particularly good job of painting the diverse conditions that exist within the American theatre landscape. It offers lots of additional sources for researching ones further interests, via publications, websites, etc. It also offers some very helpful advice about finding college and university programs, or if that is even advisable. The writer obviously has a wide body of experience and has presented the information in a very succinct and engaging manner

This book presents a refreshing look at what people can do to position themselves for greater success in career and life generally. It is an easy read full of practical tips.

I bought 2 copies;one for a 50 year old woman who has been made redundant recently. It has helped her re-focus herself on her considerable talents which had been badly dented in the trauma of redundancy. The second I have given to my CEO to help him think about the organisation's people development needs as it increases its global footprint.

This book works on both levels. Take time out to enjoy it

My favorite Chicken Soup book is always the new one that I'm reading. So, right now my favorite book is "A Chicken Soup for the Soul Christmas." Every story is a gem! What I like about the Chicken Soup books is that you can read a story a day, or a couple of stories a week, or sit down and read the whole book through! (Which I ofter do, because sometimes I just can't stop reading these stories.) One of my favorite things about Chicken Soup books is the wide variety of stories--stories by children, funny stories, touching stories, inspiring stories.

I can't wait for next years Christmas Chicken Soup book--I know that one will be my new favorite book.

I also love Christmas Gifts, Christmas Voices--a touching story in the wonderful "Chicken Soup" tradition.

I thought this book might be one that only moms could identify with. I'm not a mom myself, but I loved it! The stories are universal, and include something for every taste (just like a box of chocolates!) Some stories are heartwarming, some are funny, some are bittersweet, and some are inspiring. Personally, I enjoy almost anything chocolate and this book is no exception.

In my opinion, Bob and Ray's stuff from the 1950's is by far their best. Then they were young, fresh - and often improvisatory! Classic Bob and Ray Volume 1 includes four episodes of "Matt Neffer, Boy Spotwelder", which has to be the most surreal, dream-like, (and utterly pointless) series ever conceived. There are also episodes of "One Fella's Family", another of B & R's great pieces. The bits with "Arthur Sturdley"
(a take-off on radio personality Arthur Godfrey) are priceless!

B & R's capacity for voices and characterization is amazing.
This little-known comedy duo will bring you endless laughter, joy, and emotional health. Long live Bob and Ray!

Note: I know that "Family" was a parody of the popular soap opera "On Man's Family" and of the show "Vic and Sade". But what was "Matt Neffer" based on, if anything? I'd be interested to know.

This book points out the common mistakes most student pilots commit and explains how to avoid them. Mr.Penglis offers excellent insight that will help you save embarrassment and valuable training time. His explanation of concepts is humorous with plenty of logical examples. You will hardly ever pause over explanations as they are presented very intuitively. This book is well-written and it takes the reader seriously. If you plan to take up Flight training or are dreaming to be in the cockpit, you must definitely obtain this book. It helped me immensely when I was in the process of obtaining my private pilot license out of Marshfield, MA.

I would highly recommend that anyone considering private pilot training buy this book. In a wry, cynical, style, Mr. Penglis offers some very clear and valuable insight to the many expensive pitfalls that await you.

Read it cover to cover before you invest a dime in training. Then, re-read each chapter as you reach that point in your flying career. I'm sure a few high profile instructor/examiner types would hate this book. It does not tell you what you want to hear about general aviation, it tells you what you need to hear!

I found this book at my local library and it's been one of the few that I found hard to put down each night. I was flying out of a flight school and got my private but was wary of the expenses & the odds and ends that weren't fitting in. I then decided to be brave and went out looking at flying clubs and Mr.Penglis couldn't have been more right about "...the greatest characters in aviation reside at flying clubs". I found my Instrument Instructor at a flying club a little out of the way, but a retired and amicable USAF C141 instructor! I couldn't ask for more. I would say this book is an absolute MUST READ before you decide on your first school/club.

This is the best book of it's kind that I have read - out of about 5 or so. Written in 1997, the authors considered the Internet and telecommuting as well. And it is nearly as relevant to Australia (where I find myself) as to the USA. Easy to read, it contains many useful hints, tables, and resources. Valuable questionaires and lists. What you should and what you shouldn't. What you need, and what you don't. Even so, we also had a "First Try". But nothing ventured is nothing learned.

A useful tool for Chambers of Commerce too.

If you have been dreaming of moving to the country, but don't know if you can really do it successfully, Country Bound! is a great resource. The Rosses lay all their personal experience on the line, frankly and comprehensively. They help you ask yourself the "nitty-gritty" questions that you MUST consider before making such a big life change. The book's separate sections on lifestyle and business considerations help you break down the decision into manageable pieces. The many quizzes and activities are fun as well as eye-opening, and the writing style makes it a quick, enjoyable read. One reading may not be enough, however! There's so much good information here, you will want to review many sections over and over!

This is an excellent book, especially for HR/C&B practitioners. Like most HR topics, reward strategy is common sense and this book structures it neatly. A fantastic reward strategy framework - shows the inter-related nature of all stratgies and the operationalised details of a compensation strategy.

The book is comprehensive, yet accessible.

Nice to have all the PowerPooint slides on CD in the back cover, too.

A textbook on employee rewards

If you enjoy working with university textbooks, you'll appreciate this book. It feels like a college text. It looks like a college text. It's filled with graphs and charts like a college text. It's seasoned with case studies in call out boxes. There are endnotes, as well as a bibliography. The index is so full of references, a smaller type was used-perhaps to save space.

The authors' message is that the secret to developing a creative and effective rewards strategy is based on a combination of Money, Mix, and Message. The Money aspect addresses the value of the reward(s) to the employee. The design of the plan, constructed to meet employer and employee needs, is the Mix. The Message deals with what the employer wants to communicate to its employees about appropriate values and the company's expectations. The authors describe their approach as "M3," emphasizing the need for a good balance between the three factors.

Readers will explore more than a hundred practical tools for building what they call the M3 Reward System. Financial rewards are integrated with non-financial rewards. Application of the step-by-step strategy promoted by the authors is a CD-ROM that is loaded with tools, exercises, and techniques to equip readers to tailor their own strategies to be consistent with company needs.

The authors are consultants with considerable experience in serving dozens of Fortune 500 companies. The orientation of the book, understandably, is toward larger companies. Smaller firms will still get a lot out of this text, but may have to invest some serious study time to get the full benefit of the package. The stories relating the authors' experiences are illuminating and add value for the reader who wants to gain the deeper understanding of how customized corporate reward programs are put together and managed.

Hefty price, but fully loaded.
