A telling insight into the caretaker ability of GodReview Date: 1999-04-29
I was moved and touched by the candidness of the author to share things that are quite senitive and kept close to the heart. That is something I want to do, yet the time is not right. To share how elderly people loved her enough to adopt her and rear her as their own child touched me in ways that are identifiable to my own situation.
It is my opinion that any oridnary person who is struggling to make their life worth while in the mist of difficulty would do well to read this book and discover that God knows how to intervene and provide you with what you need.

Time and Stuff Organizational GuideReview Date: 2008-06-27
Morgenstern believes that organizing is what gets us unstuck. In the introduction, she promises that: "reading this book will dislodge you from your current state of paralysis and help you figure out what's next."
She introduces her theory, SHED--which means letting go of attachments of old and useless stuff to allow you to gain "energy, insight and the clarity to male decisions."
SHED is letting go of stuff in your past to allow you to move forward. Morgenstern believes we should study the reason we feel attached to certain objects and advises:
* Separate treasures
^ Remove trash
* Embrace your identity
* Drive yourself forward
She suggests we apply the same process of getting rid of stuff to removing tasks in our schedules that are simply habits and that do not support our current lifestyle.
Throughout the book, Morgenstern presents case studies of her clients to illuminate her theories.
I discovered the importance of letting go of stuff to allow my life to move forward in the book, Harmonious Environment: Beautify, Detoxify and Energize Your Life, Your Home and Your Planet. I think Morgenstern is spot-on with her SHED system.

Machiavellian, almost, in its corporate political savvyReview Date: 2006-06-15
It isn't always a pretty picture. Some tips: A common practice example, is for managers to leave a "ghost" presence behind to inspire the after-hours subordinates to think you are lurking somewhere (or impress your workaholic boss who thinks that sleeping overnight in the office is a good thing.) The ghost can be a briefcase, a jacket, something draped on your desk to indicate you just headed off to the vending machine and are coming "right back." The author deplores the dishonesty in this idea. Putting in face time should be reasonable and not makework.
The author gives very savvy advice on how to identify certain types of troublemakers , how to isolate, avoid or mitigate their destructiveness. There is advice on overseeing what people are really doing (your subordinates might lie or insulate information from you.) And there is advice on not making a project look too easy or flawless. Let them see you sweat? Or they might discount your achievement.
This is an essential book for anyone in corporate life to read, and a pretty sad one. But truthful. Get it.

Using what the CEO knows to get out of the office fasterReview Date: 2006-05-06
I cannot claim that all of this material is entirely new as some of it has likely been presented in other books. That being said, most of the insights were entirely novel and unexpected for me even though I do my best to follow the management literature and consider myself well-read in this area. In a way, what this book does is take a set of tools, namely the analytical methods which have thus far only been utilized to make large organizations run better and more profitably, and applies them with the individual in mind in order to reduce the work hours of the reader. I do not wish to say that the organization as a whole will suffer if you apply these methods. In fact everyone around you will be better off in my opinion. However, the first and foremost concern of the book is not to make the company more profitable but to help the individual create more value and obtain the appreciation that he or she deserves by spending as few hours in the office as possible. Perhaps an alternative title for this book could be "Using what the CEO knows to get out of the office faster". Well that doesn't sound like a proper title, which is why I am not an author...
Practical time management tips for people in large companiesReview Date: 2006-05-03
Despite the fundamental nature of the lessons in the book, I found the material new and exciting to read. This is both due to the stories and interviews which depict interesting, funny and sometimes tragic real life incidents and the creative solutions that the author proposes to deal with the fundamental realities of business life. One of my favorites is the chapter that shows how to deal with hour counters. The chapter explains what you can do if a supervisor refuses to evaluate your performance primarily with the results that you produce and -explicitly or implicitly- requires you to put in a certain amount of face time. The author makes a clear distinction between the honest and not so honest strategies you can employ when you are faced with such an "hour counter" and proposes very effective solutions that will help you solve the problem without compromising your integrity. I don't remember if this is chapter is included in the web site of the book, but a lot of chapters are included there. I have never before seen so much of a book made available for free on the internet. A risky strategy on the part of the publisher: I think some people may decide not to buy the book after reading so much of it for free but I like being able to check out the book before buying it. Entertaining, useful and intellectually stimulating; five stars for sure ...

Don't think twice! Hurry up, break the cycle and unleash the real facts before s/he get you into another unbreakable health-related cycle. You could not be that bad, don't ever believe it, it is definitely your manager! This book is very valuable even if you have not yet met a bully manager, which I can't believe because Bully managers can't be clearly noticed as they are very smart people. Do you want me to tell you a secret? this book can't go wrong, it can help you identify them one by one!

work is NOT lifeReview Date: 2007-05-12
If that person is your boss, who constantly undermines your work to the point you question your very self, and when works becomes a source of stress, causing physical ailments, this book will help you decide the path you need to take.
Bullying is unfortunately very real in the workplace and, at least in the US, a legal (though unethical) way to manage employees. I strongly suggest this book to anyone who is physically ill at the thought of going to their place of employment every day.

Practical, expert advice that gets the "job" doneReview Date: 2007-12-06
If you don't get the job after reading and following the book, it isn't from a lack of preparation. Even though not getting the job might sting, it's better than knowing you also didn't put your best foot forward.
For me, this book has helped immensely for sitting interviews and for conducting them as well. Good luck to all the job hunters out there!
Recommendation from a HR ManagerReview Date: 2004-08-24
I would go so far as to suggest that if you are applying for employment you cannot afford not to have this book, so vital is the content to eliminating common (and not so common) errors which diminish success.
I cannot think of one person I have interviewed (and there have been many) who would not have improved their interview performance by reading this book.
This is set to become the standard text in this field and is essential reading not only for anyone applying for a job but for MBA and HR studies students.
Excellent! A breath of fresh air and a winning formulaReview Date: 2004-08-17
I have read a number of books on this subject recently in preparing for my job move, but this excellent book really stands out from the others - I only had need for the interview material, but I very much enjoyed the other elements. The material is deeply thought out and very well presented, with a nice balance of 'stop and think' moments and teaching material. I was surprised at how much I learnt from my first reading and I have been drastically revising my strategy for my forthcoming interview as a result of the simple comon sense approach that Mr Manahan suggests.
I couldn't recommend it more - put this one on your wish list.
UPDATE: I GOT THE JOB!
An update from my last review - I got the job! I have written to Mr Manahan to thank him personally for his ideas and his inspiring writing, but I just had to say it here too.
The two interviews I had to undergo didn't ruffle my feathers at all having read and practised the ideas in Oasis. I dread to think what would have happened if I had been asked some of the more thorny questions a few weeks ago, but the profiling, mapping and rehearsal strategy that Mr Manahan outlines made all the difference.
I hate interviews and always used to dread them. Now, I won't have to sit one for a long time and if I do, I am not worried. The feeling of confidence that I had going into the interview just grew and grew as I could see the answers I had developed reassuring the interviewers and positioning me for the role.
I can't recommend this book enough. I hope it transforms your life as much as it did mine.
I'm very glad I read this bookReview Date: 2007-02-19
The author makes it clear exactly what needs to be on (and off) your resume so they'll call you in - and what they do and don't want to hear from you during your interview.
If you're looking to land your dream job I'd say this book is a must-have. I'm very glad I read this book and I'll be recommending it to family and friends.

Do you have the guts to change?Review Date: 2000-06-01
I sat them next to my couch, got a glass of iced tea and went to work perusing the pages. Right away it was evident that, for the most part, the only thing different about these how to tomes was their cover. Inside was the same tired advice and the same over used examples of resumes and cover letters.
Guess what? As an employee candidate your job is to stand out from the crowd, not blend in with it.
I had just about given up on my reading (and was getting more depressed by the minute) when I came across "Who's Hiring Who?" I could tell right away that it was different, the question was, would I have the guts to run free, as the book encouraged, or would I continue to run with the herd?
When I read "Who's Hiring Who" I was three months into a job search. After this much time spent looking for work (and I was at it 12 hours a day!) I told myself that my resume, which took form based upon a lot of the ancient advice in the mainstream resume books, wasn't working and I wasn't going to lose anything by trying the advice in "Who's Hiring Who?"
It took me a week to read the book, really think about the suggestions it made, and then distill it's principles into my new QUALIFICAITONS BRIEF. No more resumes! Other no mores? No more worrying about a spotty work history. No more worrying about an incomplete (that means little or no college) education. The book tells you the best ways to accentuate the positive and marginalize the negative.
Within two weeks I had several job offers on the table. Within a month I had done more than get a job, I had successfully changed careers and was working for a hot software company with benefits out the wazoo and a pay rate higher than I'd hoped for!
(Since then I've read Tom Peter's book, "Circle of Innovation" (I think that was the book), which, when talking about resumes says who cares about education, companies want to know what you've done. What have your successes been? This is one thing "Who's Hiring Who?" focuses on.)
My advice to you? Buy the book, follow its advice and have the guts to change!

This book helped me make sense out of work and moneyReview Date: 1999-04-24
I liked a lot of the points brought up in Chapter 1 ("Hunting, Gathering, & Video Games"), like the origin of the double meaning of the word "trade" - how your job, or your `trade', is really just about what you use to `trade' with food, clothes, and shelter specialists. And I never thought about why we have to use money before, but after reading Chapter 2 ("Surgery & Dental Floss"), it suddenly made so much sense. Could a surgeon and floss-maker reliably make much use out of each other's specialties if they had to rely on straight barter?
