The chemistry between Dawn and Matt with dialogue in this book was a page turner. A book that is very hard to put down. Dawn has a fiesty spunk to her that she will not allow any man to bring her down. The character is strong, witty and downright likeable. A strong female that you grow to love immediately when the book opens. The way she stands up to her boss the first day and the strawberry milkshake was really cute. Well readers this is a book that is a must read. You will simply love Dawn and Matt as they struggle through past problems to come to see what is really intented for the two of them. Ms. Jetton weaves a beautiful love story that will touch your heart, and bring joy and laughter with each word you read. If only the world had more protective men in it like Matt. This book deserves a two thumbs up and 6 stars. A great love story!! Cheri Jetton is not only a great writer but a terrific person that is there for anyone in a time of need. I can hardly wait for her next book to come out. Anyone that has not read any of her books you must go out and get them, they are great!!!!

This book is quite an inspiration to me for I am reminded of myself and the difficulties in life that befell me at an early age. I am greatful that the Love of God is displayed in the life of ordinary people.

I was moved and touched by the candidness of the author to share things that are quite senitive and kept close to the heart. That is something I want to do, yet the time is not right. To share how elderly people loved her enough to adopt her and rear her as their own child touched me in ways that are identifiable to my own situation.

It is my opinion that any oridnary person who is struggling to make their life worth while in the mist of difficulty would do well to read this book and discover that God knows how to intervene and provide you with what you need.

I must say that this is a very inspirational writing on what one could use to turn their life around and walk into a status of brillance. The author has explained in a clear format what it takes to accomplish the task of becoming a Gem...

Thought provoking questions are asked that will cause you to search your life and see where you've turned and maybe you should have walked straight or taken a step back and meditated for 15 minutes more. She realizes what the foundation should be in becoming a stronger person and uses sound doctrine to substantiate her findings.

She addresses throughout her writing expressions of possitive thinking and guidance on what process should be implemented to reach the next level in your life. You can not miss the mark once The Six P Process is setup and you are focused on obtaining change in your life.

As a writer and inspirational speaker, I can honestly say that this book inspired and motivated me! Sarah Freeman Smith does what few writers have the courage to do....she lets us see her as a person, not as a critical expert sitting up on a throne. After only a few pages, I found myself in awe of Sarah's life story. If anyone can tell us how to turn dull lives of stone into shimmering gems, it's Sarah. I put her in the league with Iyanla Van Zandt and Jewel Diamond Taylor!

I loved this book! Charise has really hit the right note with a book like this. At a time when parents are busy enrolling their children in class after class, this book makes you stop and think. It makes you ask "What are the character traits that I can instill in my child?" instead of "what are the capabilities I can instill in my child." She doesn't preach or sermonize and still the message hits right home. Delightful ! I could talk my kids to death on the importance of being good and humane people or I could read them this book.

What a delightful book! I found it charmingly simple in its writing, and wondrous in its illustrations. And how refreshing to have kids read about and think about the qualities and traits one hopes to have as an adult as opposed to a specific profession. I loved the unique way she integrated real life photos/faces into her drawings. It made the book both more fanciful for me, as well as more "connected" to kids. And the children that I've shared it with have each been mysteriously drawn to the whole flavor of the book. I look forward to more offerings from this author, as I imagine her creativity will extend to realms that I will be drawn to myself!

"When I Grow Up" by Charise Mericle Harper is great book for parents, grandparents and educators. This book is beautifully illustrated and the amusing examples make it easy for children to understand. As parents we all want our children to be responsible, kind and caring. This book illustrates these qualities in a delightful way, and the book can be used as a learning process for both parents and children.

Authors Connie Brown Glaser and Barbara Steinberg Smalley deftly combine solid reporting of facts, figures and poll results with insightful stories about women who have abandoned the corporate rat race. This concise look at a pivotal trend is not limited to women only, though they are its emphasis. The authors introduce high-powered executive women who seek more purpose, balance and fulfillment, and find it by taking less stressful positions, starting their own businesses or switching careers. Much of the story is told through the personal case histories of corporate strivers who decide to chuck it all and go home. Many of these pioneers asked, "What good is all this money when I have no time to enjoy it?" They got tired of being "corporate machines," sick of jeopardizing their health and their important relationships. While many employers now understand that satisfaction, purposefulness and appreciation can trump money, some ground still need to get broken here. We highly recommend this book to people at all levels in the work force because it will help you consider your destiny - even if you love the electricity of corporate life and would be bored to tears making gift baskets in your garage.

The authors have done an outstanding job by communicating to readers how to acheive fufilling, balanced life-styles. The stories are great lessons for women who are questioning the meaning of success. Is it how much money you make or how much time you have to relax and enjoy your family and friends?

This book provides inspiration for women who desire something more than a title and a six-figure salary. Success is defined many different ways by the women featured in this book. The numerous examples of redefined success are refreshing and thought provoking.

I am a professional personnel who dove head first into being a stay at home mom - who misses the professional world, but knows she is in the right place w/kids right now, home - it can be a shocker. Even with all of the stay at home mom stress, it's worth it to me to make $0 and stay home with our kids. The biggest lesson I've learned these past 4 years is to take care of your mind, body and spirit (self-esteem). This book shows others (even non-moms) how they can regain balance in their lives by determining what they love to do and shifting their professional gears to a more fulfilling position. Excellent read!

Glaser and Smalley are among the most influential of current business scholars because they think so clearly and write so well while discussing the most important issues. Perhaps you have already read their Swim with the Dolphins. If not, you are urged to do so. In this book, they focus on an especially timely subject: The importance of "soul" in the equation for "success." In recent years, I have examined the results of more than 30 "employee satisfaction" surveys and was surprised, frankly, by what were rated the highest attributes: feeling appreciated, being treated with respect, believing in the value of the work to be done, enjoying the work to be done, and trusting the organization by which one is employed. What about compensation? Depending upon the individual survey, it was ranked anywhere from ninth to thirteen in importance. For those who participated in the surveys and probably for most other workers, money is never enough and seldom most important. The authors ask all of the right questions but, to their credit, resist the temptation to advocate any ":right answers." That responsibility they entrust to each reader. Although this is another of recently published books which have a gender-specific frame-of-reference, almost everything the authors share can also be of substantial value to men...not only to understand much better their mothers, sisters, wives, daughters, business associates, etc. but, more to the point, to understand themselves much better.

When Organizing Isn't Enough: SHED Your Stuff, Change Your Life, by Julie Morgenstern is a about getting rid of the physical stuff and the tasks in our schedules that keep us stuck. Julie Morgenstern is an organizational and time management coach and puts her talents into this ingenious book.

Morgenstern believes that organizing is what gets us unstuck. In the introduction, she promises that: "reading this book will dislodge you from your current state of paralysis and help you figure out what's next."

She introduces her theory, SHED--which means letting go of attachments of old and useless stuff to allow you to gain "energy, insight and the clarity to male decisions."

SHED is letting go of stuff in your past to allow you to move forward. Morgenstern believes we should study the reason we feel attached to certain objects and advises:

* Separate treasures
^ Remove trash
* Embrace your identity
* Drive yourself forward

She suggests we apply the same process of getting rid of stuff to removing tasks in our schedules that are simply habits and that do not support our current lifestyle.

Throughout the book, Morgenstern presents case studies of her clients to illuminate her theories.

I discovered the importance of letting go of stuff to allow my life to move forward in the book, Harmonious Environment: Beautify, Detoxify and Energize Your Life, Your Home and Your Planet. I think Morgenstern is spot-on with her SHED system.

I read a lot of personal development books. There is more practical and useful advice in this book than in almost any book I have read. One area of advice I liked a lot is the Perfectionism Habit Breakers, a few of which are (1) Devise three approaches, minimim, moderate, & maximum, before jumping into anything, and opt for minimim or moderate whenever possible. This helps you to recognize there are more than two outcomes (disaster and perfection) (2) Rephrase the question "how much can I do?" to "how little can I do?" You are not cheating, you are preserving yourself for other tasks, likely ones which are more important and/or more enriching. (3) Stop doing other people's jobs. You can better use the time, and it develops them rather than sending the wrong signal. And, you can always provide coaching feedback later.

Very, very good book

This is a groundbreaking book. Author Ozyasar instructs the new business leader how to manage his time but more importantly, manage his image to effectively lead and avoid certain pitfalls of corporate life.

It isn't always a pretty picture. Some tips: A common practice example, is for managers to leave a "ghost" presence behind to inspire the after-hours subordinates to think you are lurking somewhere (or impress your workaholic boss who thinks that sleeping overnight in the office is a good thing.) The ghost can be a briefcase, a jacket, something draped on your desk to indicate you just headed off to the vending machine and are coming "right back." The author deplores the dishonesty in this idea. Putting in face time should be reasonable and not makework.

The author gives very savvy advice on how to identify certain types of troublemakers , how to isolate, avoid or mitigate their destructiveness. There is advice on overseeing what people are really doing (your subordinates might lie or insulate information from you.) And there is advice on not making a project look too easy or flawless. Let them see you sweat? Or they might discount your achievement.

This is an essential book for anyone in corporate life to read, and a pretty sad one. But truthful. Get it.

A must-read for anybody in a managerial role

I got the book only yesterday and have already finished reading it, which is quite atypical for me. Actually, I don't think I have every read a non-fiction book so quickly. The book is very unusual and skillfully written in that it contains a lot of material but is very easy to read at the same time. The author starts with some of his personal experiences that lead him to analyze and study the concept of managerial efficiency and gently leads into his theories about corporate life and from there moves into the application of the principles in real life settings. The book taught me a lot without ever making it feel like a lecture, definitely very smooth and pleasurable to read. Perhaps the main reason the author manages to achieve this effect is because he introduces the new material in the book by building on examples, situations and encounters that everyone who works in an office setting would have experienced. In my view, the opinions expressed are quite unusual and novel but they are presented in a very easy to understand style by breaking them down into bite size pieces, so to say. You will probably ask yourself why you could not see the things mentioned here as they make so much sense. I also love the idea of donating part of the proceeds from the book to other authors from underdeveloped countries. The book's homesite has more on that and also a cool page where you can read a lot of the book for free. [...]

Using what the CEO knows to get out of the office faster
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2006-05-06
In my humble opinion, this is a groundbreaking book. When I read in the first chapter that there would no mention of typical time management techniques anywhere in the book, I figured that either the same material that is found in other time management resources would be presented under different and fancier names or that this would be a book about slacking off. Neither was the case. The author presents an in-depth analysis of modern organizations and provides far-reaching insights into how they really function. He then goes on to show what the reader can do in order to get properly compensated for his or her efforts and achieve the promotion, pay raise or whatever it is that he or she is seeking, with the least amount of workload.

I cannot claim that all of this material is entirely new as some of it has likely been presented in other books. That being said, most of the insights were entirely novel and unexpected for me even though I do my best to follow the management literature and consider myself well-read in this area. In a way, what this book does is take a set of tools, namely the analytical methods which have thus far only been utilized to make large organizations run better and more profitably, and applies them with the individual in mind in order to reduce the work hours of the reader. I do not wish to say that the organization as a whole will suffer if you apply these methods. In fact everyone around you will be better off in my opinion. However, the first and foremost concern of the book is not to make the company more profitable but to help the individual create more value and obtain the appreciation that he or she deserves by spending as few hours in the office as possible. Perhaps an alternative title for this book could be "Using what the CEO knows to get out of the office faster". Well that doesn't sound like a proper title, which is why I am not an author...

Practical time management tips for people in large companies
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 6 total.
Review Date: 2006-05-03
This is definitely my favorite business book of the year; great balance of analysis, storytelling and humor. In addition, the author does an excellent job of giving you the insider's story of business life. Those who are new to the world of business will get a realistic view of how things really work in large companies and the veterans will look back at their experiences in a different light after reading this. Unlike other books that attempt to do the same, the author neither puts on rosy glasses to convince you that only hard work and honesty can get you to the top nor does he present an overly cynical view of the business world claiming that stabbing people in the back and expecting the same is the price you pay for glory (the words of another famous business writer). The author keeps a cool head and presents an impartial and objective analysis of how large companies "distribute fame and blame". The beauty of the book is that it demonstrates the most fundamental principles of large organizations in action. Because anyone working for a large company would be exposed to the same forces, every employee of large firms (and nonprofit organizations) can benefit from the book.
Despite the fundamental nature of the lessons in the book, I found the material new and exciting to read. This is both due to the stories and interviews which depict interesting, funny and sometimes tragic real life incidents and the creative solutions that the author proposes to deal with the fundamental realities of business life. One of my favorites is the chapter that shows how to deal with hour counters. The chapter explains what you can do if a supervisor refuses to evaluate your performance primarily with the results that you produce and -explicitly or implicitly- requires you to put in a certain amount of face time. The author makes a clear distinction between the honest and not so honest strategies you can employ when you are faced with such an "hour counter" and proposes very effective solutions that will help you solve the problem without compromising your integrity. I don't remember if this is chapter is included in the web site of the book, but a lot of chapters are included there. I have never before seen so much of a book made available for free on the internet. A risky strategy on the part of the publisher: I think some people may decide not to buy the book after reading so much of it for free but I like being able to check out the book before buying it. Take a look at beyondtimemanagement.com

Entertaining, useful and intellectually stimulating; five stars for sure ...

Many, maybe most people identify themselves by their profession or the company that they work for. Many times it is a happy, fulfilling part of their life, but if is isn't, there is a good chance someone at your workplace is making you miserable.
If that person is your boss, who constantly undermines your work to the point you question your very self, and when works becomes a source of stress, causing physical ailments, this book will help you decide the path you need to take.
Bullying is unfortunately very real in the workplace and, at least in the US, a legal (though unethical) way to manage employees. I strongly suggest this book to anyone who is physically ill at the thought of going to their place of employment every day.

Employees who work for a bully face daily and constant confrontation with little recourse - but WHEN YOU WORK FOR A BULLY: ASSESSING YOUR OPTIONS AND TAKING ACTION offers such recourse, from exit strategies to leave an abusive situation to learning how to identify a bully and utilizing self-defense tactics to keep ego intact. From financial concerns to preserving job integrity and seeking government assistance, WHEN YOU WORK FOR A BULLY juxtaposes case history examples with practical tips. Very highly recommended: it provides specifics rather than theory.

Practical, expert advice that gets the "job" done

I have recommended this book to 7 or more people. It takes pressure off and prepares one for each phase of job transition. Many friends and colleagues report they have excelled at interviews just by knowing what to expect and how to act.

If you don't get the job after reading and following the book, it isn't from a lack of preparation. Even though not getting the job might sting, it's better than knowing you also didn't put your best foot forward.

For me, this book has helped immensely for sitting interviews and for conducting them as well. Good luck to all the job hunters out there!

I have read this book, and am very impressed. The author has distilled the current state-of-the-art thinking in relation to the hiring process and has presented this valuable information in a clear, concise and entertaining way.

I would go so far as to suggest that if you are applying for employment you cannot afford not to have this book, so vital is the content to eliminating common (and not so common) errors which diminish success.

I cannot think of one person I have interviewed (and there have been many) who would not have improved their interview performance by reading this book.

This is set to become the standard text in this field and is essential reading not only for anyone applying for a job but for MBA and HR studies students.

I found this book after browsing the author's very informative website and I am delighted to say that the book exceeded all of my expectations. It is clear, positive, focused and every element is based on the realities of competing in today's job market. As someone who hasn't attended an interview in a long time, I can only say that I am almost looking forward to the one I will be sitting in a few weeks time.

I have read a number of books on this subject recently in preparing for my job move, but this excellent book really stands out from the others - I only had need for the interview material, but I very much enjoyed the other elements. The material is deeply thought out and very well presented, with a nice balance of 'stop and think' moments and teaching material. I was surprised at how much I learnt from my first reading and I have been drastically revising my strategy for my forthcoming interview as a result of the simple comon sense approach that Mr Manahan suggests.

I couldn't recommend it more - put this one on your wish list.

UPDATE: I GOT THE JOB!
An update from my last review - I got the job! I have written to Mr Manahan to thank him personally for his ideas and his inspiring writing, but I just had to say it here too.

The two interviews I had to undergo didn't ruffle my feathers at all having read and practised the ideas in Oasis. I dread to think what would have happened if I had been asked some of the more thorny questions a few weeks ago, but the profiling, mapping and rehearsal strategy that Mr Manahan outlines made all the difference.

I hate interviews and always used to dread them. Now, I won't have to sit one for a long time and if I do, I am not worried. The feeling of confidence that I had going into the interview just grew and grew as I could see the answers I had developed reassuring the interviewers and positioning me for the role.

I can't recommend this book enough. I hope it transforms your life as much as it did mine.

I'm very glad I read this book

Other get-the-job-you-want books have bored me to tears. In contrast, this book is funny and a quick read.

The author makes it clear exactly what needs to be on (and off) your resume so they'll call you in - and what they do and don't want to hear from you during your interview.

If you're looking to land your dream job I'd say this book is a must-have. I'm very glad I read this book and I'll be recommending it to family and friends.

Simply excellent. I haven't read too many books of this sort, but this one answered all of my questions and provided me with a strategic, long-term approach to my job search which has boosted my knowledge and greatly boosted my confidence. I have never before understood why interviewers ask the questions they do, now I am armed with more information on the interview process than most interviewers I have encountered! For me, the best parts of this book were that it was user-friendly, very well organized and laid out, easy to search through and very well written.

As a retired HR exec I frequently assist friends and relatives with their resumes and the job hunting process. This book has been a staple for me and those I help for many years. I first found it when my own company was bought out and I was laid off. It helped me and is full of wonderful advice that is useful for any job hunter. Absolutely the first book I recommend to people who are looking for job hunting help. I bought this copy because I wanted to make sure I had a spare copy in case the one that I lend out all the time fails to come home someday!

This is an excellent book. Together with other books, this is what is needed in a job search. The author has done a great job in pulling together the elements which spell success in the quest for employment. I recommend it.

Do you have the guts to change?

When I was out of work, and wanting to make a career change, I went to the library and, literally, checked out a three foot stack of resume and cover letter books.

I sat them next to my couch, got a glass of iced tea and went to work perusing the pages. Right away it was evident that, for the most part, the only thing different about these how to tomes was their cover. Inside was the same tired advice and the same over used examples of resumes and cover letters.

Guess what? As an employee candidate your job is to stand out from the crowd, not blend in with it.

I had just about given up on my reading (and was getting more depressed by the minute) when I came across "Who's Hiring Who?" I could tell right away that it was different, the question was, would I have the guts to run free, as the book encouraged, or would I continue to run with the herd?

When I read "Who's Hiring Who" I was three months into a job search. After this much time spent looking for work (and I was at it 12 hours a day!) I told myself that my resume, which took form based upon a lot of the ancient advice in the mainstream resume books, wasn't working and I wasn't going to lose anything by trying the advice in "Who's Hiring Who?"

It took me a week to read the book, really think about the suggestions it made, and then distill it's principles into my new QUALIFICAITONS BRIEF. No more resumes! Other no mores? No more worrying about a spotty work history. No more worrying about an incomplete (that means little or no college) education. The book tells you the best ways to accentuate the positive and marginalize the negative.

Within two weeks I had several job offers on the table. Within a month I had done more than get a job, I had successfully changed careers and was working for a hot software company with benefits out the wazoo and a pay rate higher than I'd hoped for!

(Since then I've read Tom Peter's book, "Circle of Innovation" (I think that was the book), which, when talking about resumes says who cares about education, companies want to know what you've done. What have your successes been? This is one thing "Who's Hiring Who?" focuses on.)

My advice to you? Buy the book, follow its advice and have the guts to change!

I bought this book a few years ago, right before I moved to a new city. I have to say it is one of the BEST books, if not THE best book available for writing that all-important resume. Contrary to the individual who said it needed updated due to resumes being entered and searched via a database, I think the book is just fine as it is. This book does NOT tell you how to write a traditional resume, which is probably why the reviewer didn't think it worked and needed updated for database search...it isn't formatted like the online resume searches. However, it does instruct the reader on how to write something even better: a Qualifications Brief. A resume and a qualifications brief are similar and are meant to do the same things, but whereas a resume describes a persons past positions and his or her responsibilities, a QB describes the actual QUALIFICATIONS the person has that makes him or her the right candidate for the specific job for which he or she is applying. That makes all the difference to the employer, who gathers his or her important first impression of the applicant from the submitted dull resume or uniquely different QB. I know from personal experience: I sent out two QBs after I moved and I got call-backs for BOTH submissions. I'm currently in my 5th year of employment for one of them. I also wrote a QB up for a friend of mine and she too got hired within days of sending it out. Neither of us have ever had such prompt responses when sending out a normal, traditional resume. My advice: buy this book; it's definitely worth every penny!

Not sure if this book is still useful in 2000.

I used to think that this was the best resume book on the market. It helps you to understand that a resume should be something carefully crafted and designed with a goal in mind. I'm just not sure how useful it is in 2000. Today your resume is entered into a database and a search is done on key words to find you. This book needs to be updated. The last update was in 1989. A lot has changed in the hiring industry since then. Why has this book not been updated?

The uniqueness of Todd Gate's book, "Why Do We Have To Work", lies in the fact that it addresses a question on the mind of every student: What can I do to bring meaning to my life? Students who may be bombarded with messages from family and and friends about the need to make as much money as possible, will enjoy Gate's presentation of another view- a need to strive for a balance in life. Todd Gate's book should attract a wide range of readers who are in need of thinking things through and coming to their own determination about Why We Have to Work.

While this is a practical treatise, there is an underlying current of organization that carries with it an attitude of profound respect for and committment to child development. In this book Gates presents a balance in living, advancing a value of self and sensitivity to the needs of his children, providing them with the necessary tools to be able to cope with the realities they are having and will have to face in order to thrive in the adult world. It is by no means an easy task to be satisfied with one's self as an adult. Gates gives some important hints about loving one's self, accepting reality, dealing with it, and making use of that achievement in accepting the responsibility for teaching his children how to get a jump-start on their own development. It looks like he intends to have his children thinking independently by their teens. So this book is helpful in its practical scope but beyond that has a coherent inner structure that contains its own subliminal guide.

An excellent introduction on what it means to work.

Like a good parent, Mr.Gates is both firm and understanding in introducing the young reader to the realities of the workplace. From a history of labor, to the meaning of modern employment, the author provides fresh answers to old questions, without ever becoming pedantic.

As a psychotherapist, I appreciate the psychologically sound principles Gates put in this primer for adolescents on the nature and necessity of"work." For example, Maslow's hierarchy of needs and Erikson's stages of identity formation are evident in his elegantly simple and logical communications to his sons about the fundamentals of money, career and balance in one's life. The cost and format are not ideal; it would be great to see this packaged as an affordable paperback for teenagers.

I liked Chapter 6 ("Measuring Success") the best. It helped remind me that what you happen to DO for a living is not necessarily what you ARE. And that while it MAY be time-efficient to combine your deepest interests with your paycheck, sometimes it's better to keep the two separate!

I liked a lot of the points brought up in Chapter 1 ("Hunting, Gathering, & Video Games"), like the origin of the double meaning of the word "trade" - how your job, or your `trade', is really just about what you use to `trade' with food, clothes, and shelter specialists. And I never thought about why we have to use money before, but after reading Chapter 2 ("Surgery & Dental Floss"), it suddenly made so much sense. Could a surgeon and floss-maker reliably make much use out of each other's specialties if they had to rely on straight barter?
