This book was a great story for third graders. I wonder if the math concepts were lost on them or not. Jessie makes notes about economic ideas like franchising and profit margins, which may be a little abstract for younger readers. There are some wonderful math ideas within the story, however, like when Evan figures out division using pictures. It is a great conversation starter on how people use different strategies to solve math problems. And the real-world number problems are fantastic!

The kids' parents are seperated and the father has left them. This isn't really a strong theme for discussion, other than possibly how it affects the kids' relationship. (i.e. they are actually really good friends and help each other a lot, complimenting each other's strengths and weaknesses.) Something to keep in mind. My students did not seem to even notice this part of the story.

Outstanding choice--and bring the author to your school!

My son's third-grade teacher is reading this book aloud to the class. He loves it so much he wants a copy of his own! It's an honest, apt depiction of children's real emotions and behaviors. Like Beverly Cleary, Ms. Davies does not try to sugarcoat kids' anger, fears, and how those can be acted out. Children clearly recognize and respond to this.

Out school also had the pleasure of bringing Ms. Davies in for an author visit. She made a real connection with the kids at all different grade levels, and won high praise from the teachers and school librarians! She has written other wonderful books, for pre-school through elementary.

I found "The Lemonade War" by Jacqueline Davies a wonderful read! The book is written for elementary aged children between the ages of 7-11. The book is centered on two siblings trying to beat each other in selling lemonade. The goal is to sell $100.00 in five days. The winner takes the losers money. This whole war would have never gotten started in the first place if it wasn't for Evan's little sister Jessie getting a letter in the mail to their mother saying that she was skipping 3rd grade! Evan couldn't stand the thought of his LITTLE sister being in the same class as him.... He didn't feel that he was as smart as or even smarter than his sister. He felt she would for sure embarrass him. So the war began... Little did either sibling know the hard work that lay ahead of them... Lots of sweat, heartache, and money later they are ready for the WAR to be over and to be close like they once were. This is a great story of sibling rivalry and a great read for anyone. I would recommend this book to anyone!

Jessie Treski knows two things that I don't: her multiplication tables up to 14 times 14, and how to run a successful lemonade stand. Jessie is so smart, in fact, that when summer vacation is over and school begins in a few days, she'll skip the third grade entirely and go straight to fourthsville. Evan, Jessie's fourth-grader-to-be brother is not happy with this turn of events and is having visions of his little sister crashing his fourth grade party, showing him up, and generally ruining his classmate cred. Desperate to best his sister at something, Evan puts his people skills to work selling lemonade. When he is put to shame yet again by Jessie, the Lemonade War begins. Evan is fighting for his reputation; Jessie is fighting to show that she can fit in with the fourth grade crowd.
The Lemonade War is an entertaining read with a splash of math and business sense. Many readers will identify with the brother/sister conflict and sense of competition. A quality selection.

I've got a sister just like Jessie, but I'm the smarter one, and we can both understand feelings. We're both misers, (Nora a little bit more), But she likes lemonade stands way more. I really liked how they both sabotaged each other's money to become the winner of the Lemonade War. I can also relate, because I play with Nora a lot, but if I found she was being promoted from 3rd to 5th, I would be the same as Evan. Jacqueline Davies sure can write a story about a conflict between a brother and a brother. Even though it was 3rd person writing, she sure can write it from a kid's perspective! This is a really good book, some people might say as good as Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (Book 7)(a really good book), or all the Harry Potter Books. Kids (and even grownups) of all ages will like this book. I recommend this book to everyone who reads this, because I know you'll like it!

Great reading for anyone who has lost a loved one to death. Fern has an uncanny ability to project the emotions of a lifetime of love through the written word, as well as the pain of grief. This book will help anyone, in particular those who are widowed, to walk through the anguish of grief. Absolutely a "must read" for the widowed.

Hello Fern, Thanks for giving me an autographed copy of this book. I lost my dear sister who was like a twin to me about 2 years ago and you have helped me to come to grips such lost and emptiness in my life. Granted, I have a husband and 3 children (one is her son that we adopted after her death) but there is still a undescribed lonliness that I feel.

I read a couple of chapters a night and savor in depth of this book. I've also learned that it's okay to write a letter to my sister or keep a journal instead of keeping everything inside. And, most importantly, you do not say that I will get over it or "just go on with life." Thank you so much for understanding and for letting me know that the way I feel about the death of my loved one is quite ok afterall. And it's ok to cry or get angry or to write to her. Fern, you're a gem. And that Normy must've have been such a wonderful man. I like him and have never even met him before. Can you explain this? (smile)

Heartwarming, funny, tender and oh so important!

I am a single man and did not read this book because I lost a spouse (though I have given it to others who have). I read it because it is simply magnificent. It touches on the human condition of loss and tells us a story of love and laughter, shares a life, a relationship, and leaves us with the distinct feeling that we are better off for having read it. It's simplicity is it's beauty, and Field, who is courageous and so appealing in her story, must be a wonderful woman. Just a beautiful little book to help us deal with our difficult life journeys. Bravo!

Career advice dispels myths

Review Date: 2006-04-05
If you're frustrated with your career or if you've been hopping from company to company looking for the perfect job, this book is a must-read. Most jobs, authors Joe Frodsham and Bill Gargiulo believe - perhaps overoptimistically - already offer the possibility of satisfying work. Frodsham and Gargiulo provide a step-by-step guide to finding the things you truly love to do - your "passions." Once you understand these deep personal needs, then you can retool your job to meet them. The authors caution against switching organizations except as a last resort. We recommend this book to perennial job-seekers. If you absorb its information and do the internal work it advises, perhaps you, too, can attain "career wealth" right where you are. Hint: "career wealth" is not the same thing as earning a lot of money, just a lot of satisfaction.

So many people that are unhappy in their current jobs look outside at what appears to be the greener pastures. A large percentage eventually succumbs to the illusion of "it's better over there" and change jobs, only to find that there really is little difference. Many of the others remain at their job, happy in the security and stability, yet inwardly unhappy and resentful. The authors make a powerful case for another option, instead of looking over the fence, scan your current pasture with an idea of applying the proper fertilizer and periodic watering. In other words conduct a detailed examination of your current company and your passions and see if there is compatibility between your passions and what the company needs.
Options are that some job description needs to be changed, a current job needs to be done differently, a new one created or a job developed where there is no detailed description. The positions of the authors make an enormous amount of sense for employees and employers. The cost of losing a productive employee is enormous, so it makes economic sense for employers to be reasonably flexible in allowing employees to expand their horizons. Changing jobs is a traumatic experience that should be carefully thought out and often fails to generate an improvement in your emotional, psychological and professional well being. Therefore, if you can find or create something better where you are at, then by all means you should do so.
A self-help book that makes sense, contains nothing that generated the "what a crock" reaction when I read it, and has a lot of sound, practical advice, it should be read by everyone who is unhappy in their current job.

This is the best of the artist books on how they and others have made it in the art world - successfully! It is inspirational and yet honest. Testimonies by other artists add interest, especially since they work in varied media. Tips on how to make it and yet develop a thick-skin for particular situations added to the usefulness in motivating any artist. The quality of the book is impressive, from the type of paper, images, and resources, making it a reference that I can use for many years to come.

Hopefully, I will be as successful as the artists that are fortunate enough to be represented by Donald Clark. This is the texbook I had in college. It was and still is great, but for one...being a textbook ...it is more theoretical and two, it lacks certain areas. Nevertheless, it is very usefull. I would complement it with a book that I have recently read: Heads In Beds - hospitality and tourism Marketig by Ivo Raza. This is very practical and covers the areas that are missing from Kotler's textbook like Loyalty marketing, COOP with Touroperators, targeting travel agents, creating promotional materials, development, etc. Combined, both books truly give a complete overview of the complex travel indutry and should be the foundation for people studying or working in travel and tourism.

Exceptional narrative of a great leader

Donald T. Phillips does an exceptional job at narrating the life of the late great Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. He does an incredible job in tying in the aspects of Dr. King's life as a man, and activist together with the principals of Leadership.

He breaks down the book into 4 sections, that each details the start and end of the American Civil Rights movement. Phillips does an amazing job at chronicling the events that most shaped the philosophy of Dr. King.

I truly enjoyed this book because it helped me realize that it is possible for me to achieve my goals using the same techniques that Dr. King used. The book does a great job at outlining how a normal person can create change the way Dr. King did. Whether you live in turbulent times like those in which the Civil Rights took place or not.

I recommend this book to anyone in a leadership position to those who aspire to be leaders, but mostly to those with a goal to succeed. The knowledge you will acquire with this book is invaluable to future successes.

The book targets all, but I think it specifically aims to inspire African- Americans especially those who wish to be in leadership positions. The book in general is a great read for businesses and for groups in general. It informs the audience about the dynamics of groups and how to work through the problems that groups face.

It helps inform leaders as to the advantages and disadvantages of being a leader. Overall the book is a great read. And you will truly enjoy it.

Donald Phillips did a wonderful job of telling the story of Martin Luther King Jr. from his childhood to his death, and connecting it all to a marvelous leadership style. Being a student of leadership studies and a fan of Martin Luther King Jr., I chose this book as a study of both subjects. Having read it, I have to say I learned more about leadership from this book than any other I have read. However, I am no longer a fan of MLK......... he is now a hero of mine.

As Donald Phillips points out, for every major turning point in American history, creative leaders - right for the times and uniquely suited to the task - assume the mantle of leadership. Donald Phillips not only describes how MLK ended up at the mantle, but how and why he was the right person for the job.

MLK's movement is not the same civil rights movement being pushed by the self-serving, so-called, activists today. Read this book, you will learn about a true leader and what a true leader is. It is easy reading and inspiring. Highly recommended.

I am a student and a teacher of leadership skills, and I have found no better example than Martin Luther King Jr. This book combines the history of King's movement, but also chronicles the qualities which made King great. The text is easy to read, and fascinating. Martin Luther King, Jr. On Leadership should be required reading for anyone who hopes to impact their world. The famed Harvard psychologist Lawrence Kohlberg, who studied moral development, named King as one of the greatest moral thinkers in history. Read this book, and you will understand why.

I picked up this book simply thinking it would be a great story about leadership, but the underlying history of Martin Luther King is riveting as well. The leadership stories translate well to business and personal leadership--they speak to (all) people wanting to be part of a higher, unifying mission. If you like to "mark-up" the margins with thoughts keep a pen handy for this one. Its a book I talked about with colleagues and family more than any other I've read.

Martin Luther King, Jr.'s "I Have A Dream" speech was voted the most electrifying public address of the twentieth century. It takes some kind of a leader to give that kind of a speech. Donald T. Phillips presents the ideals of leadership that Martin Luther King Jr. followed in an overview of the history of the civil rights struggle. Phillips describes the techniques King used at various stages of the civil rights battle. He also shares King's comments on leadership. Many of the principles will be quite familiar: listen to learn, lead by being led, awaken direct action, encourage creativity and involve the people. However, the book is especially interesting when it demonstrates how King put these principles into practice. This well-organized, well-written book is clear, direct, and easy to read. While it is written for the general public (especially for African-Americans and those interested in civil rights), we [...] find this book interesting for all managers and executives, particularly those who like to learn the lessons of history.

I read this when it first came out, and boy, am I glad I did. This book gave me the courage to take small steps towards making the changes that needed to be made. It also gave me a new way of looking at work, and clarified what I had suspected, that one 40 year career, working anywhere for 40 hours a week was the old way, and on its way out, and I'd *better* find a new way of doing things, in fact the new way of doing things could even be *better*. And it has been. How far I've come. I'm still on a journey of learning, but that is life. Life is good.

I don't normally write reviews, but I do recommend this book to any mother (or father, I suppose) who knows they are committed to their career for the long haul. It is written somewhat like a textbook, but I actually liked that style for this particular book. I wanted concrete examples of women who have been through the child rearing years while also effectively climbing the corporate ladder, and their thoughts on how they made it all work. If anything, it was just nice to read about other women who faced some of the same struggles I am going through right now and that they came out of it all for the better and achieved the successes they wanted both in the office and at home.

I found this book quite interesting and easy to read. There is a good deal of research behind the facts and claims made and it is brought together thoughtfully to formulate a way of moving forward for women contemplating life outside of the home after children.

This is not really a criticism, just a comment, but the book may not relate to some women as well as others. This is because there is a leaning towards women in the academic field (studying, lecturing) or women in high ranking, high paying jobs (hence "fast track" in the title"). I still found it interesting, and certainly insightful in the identification of the created "second tier" for women with families.

A book all men should read!

This is a book every man should read.
Even for those of us who have lived through and heartily supported the equality revolution, the book is full of stunning facts, both statistical and personal, that are a wake up call to a job not yet done. A male culture still dominates practices in business, the professions and the academy and does not fully address the implications of biology for the role of women in society and their struggle for a level playing field

The book is also a great read. Mary Ann Mason writes clearly, forcefully and personally. The stories of many women collected by Eve Mason Ekman are compelling and very well told. The book combines the best of social science and personal narrative, to make a convincing argument that our sisters, daughters and wives still have great challenges as women and mothers in the working world.
While we are living in times when more women are achieving high status position, this book reminds us of the costs to these women and tells us of the many powerful and talented women who choose, because of circumstance, to not go there. I have no doubt that this would be a better world if there were more women who running it. This book calls for a change that will benefit us all.

This succinct, impeccably researched and engagingly written book is a wake-up call to young women considering meaningful careers. It presents practical guidelines and pitfalls for forging a life-long profession in academics, medicine, law or business and also having a marriage and children. I wish this book had existed when I was making those hard choices. I'm glad it's here for my daughter.

This book has many strengths, and three stand out. One is that the book really shows the data relating to women's success and longevity in the workforce, as affected by children. (The data are very easy to understand as presented.) Second, the "hard data" are backed up by and given voice with insights drawn from interviews with many women who have tried, in one way or another and in various settings, to continue a career and have children. Third, the book addresses not just this topic in general, but how women with children fare in several types of professions; for instance, it is very interesting to learn that female doctors remain in their profession with a lower dropout rate.

And the book is full of insight from which any given employer--or any group of interested women in a worksite--could work to make real change happen, so that women have the chance to choose.

This isn't a cheesy "you can have it all" book, nor does it try to whip up or take sides in "mommy wars." It is not about blaming people or trying to prescribe which way is best to raise our children. Rather, it helps us see what we can do to broaden the opportunities and quality of life for mothers and their children.

I found the Vendesi Group and Ryan Gray's book, to be an wonderfully easy to read book, while at the same time you find yourself needing a break after each chapter so that you can pause and absorb the content. Very simple and straight forward writing makes it easy to read, and the depth of wisdom makes it a book to carry along with you as you travel and continue on your quest to becoming a better salesperson.

I've read many sales books over my career. Almost every one tries to teach some grand strategy - first do this, then say that. I could find some tidbits of information to use, but I never adopted the strategy. This book just gives tons of tidbits to think about. I thought it was much more helpful than I expected.

I have read several sales "how to" texts through my 10 year career in medical sales (pharmaceutical, device, and biotech indutries) and this has been my best find to date. Recently, I have taken on national and international sales training for my company, and have ordered this text for the new hires who have limited sales expereince. There are also great tips for the well expereinced sales representatives as well. The MSDR includes great info on how to get past gate keepers, how to sell to multiple levels within a hospital, through sales basics.

I've been in the device business for about 5 years now and picked up this book a few months ago. There were things I'd never thought of in there. My return on investment (based on some new ideas from the book) was very high and my manager is taking a look at it right now. I was sceptical as well. Nice free gifts also. I just gave Ryan my Amazon order number and he sent the the freebies.

Mr. Schoon has greatly expounded upon his first edition of this excellent text. Content has nearly doubled, and he has included not only standard topics such as nail anatomy, adhesives, and product chemistry (which are vital for any nail technician to understand), but he has also added chapters such as "The Safe Salon" and "The Healthy Salon," among others. This new text includes great color photos. This text, set in a story format, includes a "Fast Track" which highlights the important facts of each chapter, as well as "Review Questions." Mr. Schoon's down-to-earth writing makes the most intimidating topics easy to understand. This book is an outstanding resource for nail technician and instructor.
