Good advice for your first career (and your second, your third, etc.)Review Date: 2008-05-01
Grad to Great is a must read for anyone entering the workforce Review Date: 2008-03-29
This easy to read book covers a wide range of information. The Grad to Great spend a great deal of time discussing knowing yourself and knowing your strengths and it is time well spent. It's great advice which applies to all but should prove especially helpful for new graduates. The section on interviewing contains solid information that will improve the chances of getting the right fit during the job search process. The material on how to conduct yourself in the work environment rings true every step along the way. And even the advice about how to leave the first job is important for the new grad to understand and keep in mind throughout the time he or she spends in that all important first job.
Brown and Zefo cover all this material in a way that is both meaningful and relevant. The quotations from various individuals in different professions sprinkled throughout the book also add charm and reinforce the messages that the authors communicate. With more than 20 years of management experience myself, I unequivocally agree with Brown and Zefo's recommendations and know from personal observation that they have indeed revealed the secrets to having success in your first career and beyond. It's amazing that such a great consolidation of sage, work-related advice comes in such a small package. I highly recommend this book to any new college graduate and plan to give copies to my favorite graduates in the years to come!
A must read for every job seekerReview Date: 2008-03-23
Every placement bureau and business school at colleges and universities should be referencing it. It is so clearly written and has such practical advice, everyone can take something useful from it. Plus it's so well-organized that specific information is quickly found.
It's now the gift of choice for all my graduating nieces, nephews, and friends' kids. Excellent!
Grad To Great is Nothing Short of Great!Review Date: 2008-03-27
To gain best use of Grad To Great, my recommendation is, read it during your junior year when its time to start your career research and planning your approach to your career choices. Then reread it again as you prepare to apply for your first full time job during or after college. Also, plan to revisit it throughout your first year on the job.
The results of your actions, relations with others, and your decisions during that first year will set the tone for making that first job a successful step toward a strong, lucrative and satisfying career. And, if you read and apply the advice in Grad To Great you will definitely make your entrance and success in the work place much easier, less stressful and perhaps just down-right enjoyable.

This HR Manager LOVES this Book!Review Date: 2008-04-07
I was recently recruiting MBA's at a major university looking for sales people. Throughout the entire day only two students could answer the following question:
"What kind of work are you looking for?"
The answers I received varied from "I don't know" to "Something in marketing I think." Oh how I wish those students had read this book "Grad to Great". The authors take you through a logical process of how to identify what kind of job you want and then how to put your best foot forward for any company you interview with (including how to answer the "What Kind of work..." question above).
As an HR manager I can tell you the chapter on how to answer interview questions is worth the price of the entire book. But on top of that you get guidance on career paths, office etiquette, dealing with difficult bosses and even 12 sure fire career success tips.
The book is long enough to cover the bases but not so long that it is full of fluff and filler nonsense. I loved this book and look forward to many more from the authors.

Great BookReview Date: 2006-03-03
This is the book I wish I'd had when I was a hiring manager.Review Date: 2006-08-12
The book is full of detailed guidance on each step of the hiring process, from creating a hiring strategy to making the new hire's first day a great one. The book provides templates and examples to help determine the required and desirable skills for a job, identify elimination factors, and articulate interpersonal and cultural fit qualities necessary for success.
Assessing skills in an interview isn't sufficient; it's how people apply those skills and adapt to situations that determine success. So Johanna details how to use behavioral questions and auditions to gain a clear picture of how a person is likely to perform in your context.
Hiring the Best will help you fine-tune your hiring process, make the best use of your time, and increase your hiring success.

Honest Advice That Will School YouReview Date: 2008-07-02
"for dummies" books, Maybe it's a bit of a put off for me to purchase
a book that tries to teach you so condescendingly. But apparently these
books are helping some people - because thousands upon thousands
of "dummies" books have been sold.
How To Survive The Real World surprised me. When I picked it up and
started to read through the pages - I found it pretty enlightening and rather humorous. It wasn't like reading from some boring manual penned by a stuffy, elitist professional, such as allot of these types of books are, that are geared towards grads.
How To Survive The Real World is like sitting down to chat with your
best friends - the ones you can pour your heart out to and that won't make you feel completely idiotic. The friends who you secretly admire for their guts and grittiness because they always seem to have no fear when it comes to tackling difficult situations , and who have the crazy stories to prove it. And it's these same friends who you always have the happiest and enthralling times with.
How would you like to have 774 friends like this? This book combines real, sometimes brash, sometimes tongue-in-cheek, advice from the grads who set out before you and I, to conquer their destinies - but surprise, their grand visions didn't always match their real life situation.
This book is full of really useful tips and advice for just about any situation the college grad might find themselves in. Here are just a few examples - a guide to stocking your first kitchen, resume dos & don't(s), email etiquette - this is great material to have at your disposal. I would highly recommend How To Survive The Real World.
Great Advice for starting lifeReview Date: 2008-04-30
If you're worried about getting out into the real world on your own, or if you know someone who will be soon, this is a great book to get.
Graduation Reality and BeyondReview Date: 2008-06-07
This helpful aid covers chapters ranging from topics such as selecting the type of job and the location and expectations involved, whether or not to return to further schooling and when and why, financial problems about credit cards and investments, the value of making contacts both as personal friends or people in the workplace who can help further the steps up the ladder of success, how to be 'on your own', to how to stay fit both physically and spiritually. The advice comes from interviews with regular people, the comments are brief but span a variety of viewpoints. The result is similar to stepping into a think tank for 'making it' outside the hallowed halls of ivy.
There is a lot of homespun wisdom in this fun little book. While it is an invaluable asset to the new grads, it is also a useful resource for people of all ages and walks of life as chances for growth become available! Well worth the purchase! Grady Harp, June 08

Overpriced little bookReview Date: 2008-04-26
Plenty of it is common sense, unfortunately. If you use your head, some of this stuff should not be new to you. Yes, there are online resources mentioned throughout the book, but the only new one to me is JibberJobber.
Maybe its good for beginners, but its not very useful if you ever went through an online search before.
Cutting Edge Guide to Using the internet for Job SearchReview Date: 2008-03-20

The Intimate Enemy: Winning the War Within YourselfReview Date: 2001-03-10
Finley and Dickstein explain that "we each have, and operate from, a false nature that is a jumble of our memories, conditioning, and some tempermental qualities." That false self responds to everything that happens to us, and its response is usually negative or defensive. We then find "ourselves caught up in the same kinds of situations again and again, and nothing ever seems to be resolved in a new way."
They call the false self an intimate enemy and say that we are our own worst enemies when it comes to finding true happiness.
Their book devoted to learning how to recognize the intimate enemy and "discover how to rise above our own present psychology."
Our false selves blame events outside ourselves for our unhappiness or see neutral events as threats, with the result that we are contantly battling to control external circumstances. Only when we become aware of the "True Self" within do we learn we are a part of a world of truth and light where all battles are non-existent.
The authors use short stories and examples to show how people misunderstand the world around them. They explain how to become aware of the fallacies the false self continually attempts to foist off as truth, and how to determine what is real and what is deceit. They say that "understanding that we are a multiplicity of selves is critical to recognizing, and ultimately defeating, the intimate enemy."
They emphasize self-study as the primary way of overcoming the false self. Self-study involves rousing ourselves from "psychic slumber" and becoming aware of our thoughts and internal actions. They offer specific tips for achieving greater self-awareness.
The Intimate Enemy is for anyone who wants more from life than a daily battle against unseen enemies.

MAGICAL QUEST=SIMPLIFY YOUR CAREER CHOICEReview Date: 2003-01-07
Like the best-selling "Parachute" book, this one has all the basic steps, various career options, exploratory exercises, resume templates, and ways to evaluate correctly. But Magical Quest is far easier to read, shorter, and more interesting (artistic touches).
This is a book you can skim through and skip from chapter to chapter. The author has a special talent with her freehand mindmapping techniques (you'll have to see it for yourself) that make this career defining book truly unique.
For the person looking for a more personal and enlightened approach to career decision-making, Magical Quest is a gem to be discovered. It's the short-version to choosing a fulfilling career (or personal quest) with all the important content and special artistic effects.
great soul supportReview Date: 2001-09-28
sure, the book is of course chock full of resources, and there are sections devoted to telling you what jobs are out there and the like.
but, in any job equation, there are two variables: YOU, and the job you take (or make). and -- probably owing to her experience in counseling -- tarin's book concentrates on YOU.
the book takes the approach that once you "know thyself" (thank you socrates, shakespeare, et al), you will be in a highly superior position -- a position where you can accurately assess any potential career, job, or manager, as to how well THEY fit YOU.
this is a wise approach. i mean, after all, haven't so many of us wasted time at 1 or more jobs struggling to be something we're not? or worse yet, not even *knowing* what we're good at, or want to do? and where has it gotten us? where we are today, right? :)
i spent a year for instance, in car sales, when i was a young man green behind the ears, trying to become "outgoing" and "extroverted", hoping that by going into a profession needing people with these traits, these qualities would rub off.
well, even though i sold a few cars, and picked up a few social skills (mostly how to be wary of crafty fellow salesmen/women!), i didn't become outgoing and extroverted. i stayed pretty much me. but the whole time i was MISERABLE!!!
while car sales is sort of a more dramatic example, most of us can still relate with jobs we've taken and later asked, "other than putting steak on the table, WHAT IN THE HECK AM I DOING HERE???"
this is where tarin excels. she really makes it not only comfortable, but FUN! to assess your strengths, weaknesses, and JOYS so you can find a job that fits YOU.
interspersed with poetry, quotes and parables, reading through "Magical Quest" is like having the wisest Mom who gently and lovingly tells you the facts of what's out there, but also has TONS of great little fun exercises to help you figure yourself out, (and make you smile and sometimes even laugh in between)..
once you've done that, the future is yours!
thanks, tarin, for a great spirit-guide-in-print, when you're looking for a job!

That said, the book is full of success skills and straight forward career advice that is applicable and useful to anyone from large company employees to self-employed to "what AM I doing with my mid-life crisis" Baby Boomers such as myself.
Co-author Brown indicates a journalism background that is apparent in the text. The book is easy to read and doesn't contain a lot of fluff with straightforward chapters on networking, dealing with difficult people, getting people to listen to you and other subjects that will never go out of style. Included are some of the standard sections on following your passion, knowing yourself and goal setting. I see these as necessary for completeness as the authors are offering a handbook for grads who may not have seen any of the hundreds of business and personal growth books out there that address these axioms of success.
I have a son in college that will be getting this book in the next "care package" from home along with Mom's oatmeal cookies.
