As I slowly read each page, I looked around me just to be sure no one else, besides the author, knew what I have been feeling all along in my life. So, you will not only read a book, you will read yourself as if your inner self was an open book waiting for you to dive into it.
Thank you Ezra, this book is not staying on my shelf but instead, will be carried inside of me forever.

The Secret of Transitions Review Date: 2008-06-17
The Secret of Transitions is part memoir and part self help book. The author shares his own transition experiences as he left a job because he felt bored and then realized that this was merely an excuse. It was at this point that he had to become very honest with himself and figure out what he really wanted to do with his life.
The author's story is subdivided into a number of chapters. Each chapter looks at one particular step within the transition process. The author's experiences serve as both an example and inspiration for the reader. I like this format because the author's words seem more like mentoring than traditional self-help.
Motivation, Hope, Courage and a Road Map to SuccessReview Date: 2008-05-06
Jim Manton's, The Secret of Transitions is an exceptional work of motivational inspiration, heart-felt pain and joy, success, failure, determination, communication and the reality of hope and how one's thinking can take them down any road.
A car in the hands of a drunk can lead to destruction, pain and loss. The same car in the hands of a skilled and dedicated professional can lead to victory, success and fulfillment.
Sit shot-gun with this curious, powerful and energetic author as he transitions from a young man in the turbulent `60s Vietnam era, back home in the US during the Reagan years of tech-corp explosions and on to higher-learning and a quest for self-purpose and mastery that makes him the incredible life coach he is today.
As a young professional Jim Manton's The Secret of Transitions was a must read for me. I can relate to the author. Whatever "transitions" you may face in life Jim Manton's story will offer you powerful, real-life experiences, pains and triumphs you can draw from to help you transition from one level of success or fulfillment to the next.

A Great Resource for Federal Job SeekersReview Date: 2007-05-09
The book is well organized as the chapters cover all the steps from how to locate opportunities to preparing for the interview. Much of the book is devoted purely to students who are seeking current or future employment with the federal government. There are a myriad of suggested resources for exploring student opportunities such as internships and part-time employment. The Student's Federal Career Guide will provide you with invaluable information on obtaining a position with the federal government.

There Really Are Ways to Work SmartReview Date: 2002-03-16
This book is deceptively easy to read and can be read in small bites. Yet, each page has some nugget of wisdom that can be put to use. Ms. Williams takes into consideration that many women were not raised to advocate for themselves. She teaches us how to overcome shyness about promoting ourselves and gives practical suggestions for taking actions that aren't aggressive, but help us feel more participative in our workplaces.
Some of the strengths Ms. Williams writes about are already developed in many women. In this book, we can learn how to build on those strengths even more and feel and act more confident in the future. Probably the quality I like best about this book is it's premise that women are good professional people that don't need to be 'fixed.' I especially recommend this book for women beginning their worklife, whether young or after another life stage. It can give you a good jump start.

I also really liked the very detailed descriptions of how to plan phone calls to contacts and referrals. Talking to someone on the phone and remembering what I wanted to accomplish and not getting flustered is such a challenge for me. This book helped a lot.
The only thing I didn't like was the first section or so where it felt more like a sales pitch for his "method" than a book. I was afraid he was just going to try to sell his lecture series. However, after the first few pages, the book got down to business. It was excellent and well written from then on.

A Book About Real LeadershipReview Date: 2001-10-17
Good on politics, slight on deeper issuesReview Date: 2002-03-05
I also liked this book because the author used her premise to package her ideas so that her tempered radicalism around race, gender, and other legally protected groups could be better heard by others. I came from academia too (and even received my PhD from Michigan where she had an early appointment in her career) but left that environment because of the oppression of free thinking and any kind of difference. This background added to my wish that this book had been around 10 years ago. I might have better succeeded in that environment if I had had this framework from which to work.
Although I like this book, I did not give the book 4 or 5 stars because the best of her book and the most important aspect of her premise was saved until last - the downside of the "tempered" approach. I do believe that revolutionary results can be achieved by evolutionary steps - small steps can achieve great things as they add up without the major heartburn or resistance that a revolution can cause. However, maybe evolution is not the best means to the ends and that cannot be decided until one decides whom they are and what they are about and decide whether tempered or full scale radicalism is what they want to do. This is a choice and is worthy of exposing at the beginning of the book. So although I may have succeeded in academia if I had had her premise from which to work, I would not have been happy because I would not have been true to me and the essence of who I was or am.
Evolution vs. revolution. To choose one must first know what one is willing to give up.

Anyone who thinks they can go to Hollywood and based on looks or talent alone start making big bucks will have their illusions shattered. Haffar shows that with perseverance after a year he was a SAG member and making enough to live on - but barely (a little under 10,000 - and much of that went to SAG membership, an agent, and headshots). He also shatters the image that many have of Hollywood being a glamorous, mean place. He illustrates that most people in the business are down to earth and how much of a team effort this work is. Overall this is a fabulous book, written simply and with a sense of humor. I would recommend it to anyone!
