New possibilities, strengths and creative solutions followed with a new found intentionality for choices made. In 2003 I am convinced the book is invaluable for leadership in volunteerism, and work, and for personal life changes. Now I am pulling the book's ideas forward again to help do some difficult staff training and development.
This is not a long book, but an important read for new perspectives.

Fosters self-esteem and confidenceReview Date: 2003-01-12
By Melisa Gao, Teen Editor
Filled with wacky but insightful advice to girls of all ages, The Real Rules for Girls is a book that every woman will wish she had been given earlier in life. Mindy Morgenstern's musings can be hilarious and zany, but always lead to a genuine message that fosters self-esteem and confidence.
The book is divided into sections for romance, work, social life, family, money, and life tips. Each contains offbeat words of wisdom accompanied by comical pictures and quotations from Gloria Steinem, Maya Angelou, and others.
"The football captains of today are the burger jockeys of tomorrow," Morgenstern proclaims, describing a scene in which you, a Nobel laureate and nominee for president, run into that heartthrob from sophomore year who is now an Assistant Manager at McDonalds. "If there isn't a door, kick in a wall," she advises. "Jobs will ... along the way," reads another caption.
It is this kind of frankness that will have older generations nodding their heads in agreement and younger girls eager to read more. The message Morgenstern delivers is to live life to its fullest, pursuing dreams and taking advantage of every opportunity. It is effectively conveyed by creative layouts and entertaining personal stories, making the book a quick and fun read. The Real Rules for Girls makes a great gift and will be enjoyed time and again by young women of all ages.

Great read...Recommended to all!Review Date: 2006-08-28
There are basic rules of the universe, yet nowadays in our society there's very FEW who follow them...very few who give out unconditional love to ALL people at all times(especially without a selfish motive)and even FEWER who seek GOD and follow in the footsteps of GOD's will.
This is definately a book to be re-read over and over through the years and especially taught to our children as to make the next generation at PEACE rather than WAR.If only EVERYONE followed this simple advice and lived through SPIRIT rather than EGO,we would NEVER be at war again...Not with family, friends, spouses, children, and especially NOT with the WORLD and NOT with our own selves!...because GOD IS LOVE AND LOVE CONQUERS ALL!! GOOD WILL ALWAYS OVERCOME EVIL!! The more people that practice it, the closer we will be to finding peace on earth!:)
CAVEAT:The only thing I found "wrong" with this book is how she mentions that we shouldnt be part of any clique/group/religion because that "DIVIDES" us, yet then she continues to state how '"we Christians" are powerless as long as we are filled with prejudice'and "We Christians" etc. yet NOT ALL WHO READ THIS BOOK ARE CHRISTIANS! So I found that to be DIVIDING in itself!!(hypocritical) The BIBLE was NOT written only for the Christan people, It was written for ALL MANKIND,as majority of this book was taken from Psalms in the BIBLE. Therefore,I had to take 1 point off for that!
But besides that, the book is a wonderful read and I recommend it to all!
High Praise for Joyce Meyer !!!Review Date: 2004-03-08
Reduce Me To Love is one of Joyce Meyer's favourites that I've heard being talked about for some time now. It is no wonder that when I was blessed by a dear friend with his book as a gift, I was on cloud nine, and anxious to finish everything I was reading just to start this book.
This book teaches us in great detail about love; a small word with such a deep and profound meaning.
It is the new commandment which Jesus gave his disciples: to love one another and by doing so, prove their discipleship.
Mrs. Meyer draws on her personal experiences as she demonstrates the many respects of love and it's purest motives.
What stays indelibly in my mind was how Jesus uses himself as an example in today's world. Whatever good deeds we do for one another, we actually do for Him and in the same light if we treat our brother with disdain we do it also to Him. We cannot get away from it, Jesus convicts us in the very name of love as he encourages us to walk in the Spirt. I would like to encourage all of those who love reading Christian literature to find this book fast and get back to loving God; the One who first loved us, before the foundation of the world.
Bless someone soon with this brilliant book.

Commitment, Character, CompetenceReview Date: 2007-07-31
Commitment. Character. Competence. These attributes fuel the engines of success in life.
It boggles the mind how many books or programs offer axiomatic platitudes such as "it's not what you know but who you know" or "success is what makes you happy, so be true to yourself."
None such wasteful advice finds its way into this book. Rather, Dr. Irwin points out the objective, observable standards that exist in life, and our need to continually evaluate ourselves and measure our choices against those standards.
As the book says; it's simple, but it isn't easy. I highly recommend this book.

Powerful & Practical: Intention Plus - Process That Works!Review Date: 2004-01-14
The Smart Spot is an experiential read, in that it carves out a clear path for consciously claiming and directing enormous freedom to yield desired outcomes with integrity. Stories from North's professional consulting practice spice the information liberally with real-life examples of how the process generates intended results. The implementation exercises, in combination, could be summed up as an indispensable manual for harnessing and focusing energy to hit the bulls-eye every time. Readers will recognize and trust the solid logic that emerges as they test out this fluid magic.
Deceptively simple and highly accessible, this book will be exciting and encouraging to anyone bent on realizing their dreams and having a good time doing it. The practical applications are unlimited because the method can be taken, layer by layer, to greater depths. This is a joyful book, destined to delight the hard-boiled pragmatist and the self identified "mystically attuned" with the same human punch and universal force.
Simple instructions for the decision makerReview Date: 2004-02-16
Skeptics may be won over by the success stories recounted in anecdotes. Business leaders report that they access an intuition from within themselves to make important decisions. The author dissects this process and makes it available to all, through a step by step process. Helpful details to the four step process are given, including using the color gold in visualizations, because of its particular "energy."
The Smart Spot stresses collaboration, not ruthless competition as a basis for success. The book emphasizes the best result for all concerned, as a refreshing change from those books which promote business strategies designed to conquer the competition. I think this would be a helpful book for a person in a decision-making capacity who is looking for a guide to help with important choices.

Spiritual Power Tools for Successful SellingReview Date: 2007-07-16
Spiritual Tools for Successful Selling reminds the reader if you believe in what you do and allow yourself to be enthused about your job you will automatically be more successful. Too often money becomes the sole purpose of our work creating a cycle of stress, decreased enthusiasm about one's work, and reduced ability to perform. However, once the job becomes more about being present, helping others with their needs, and enjoying the experience, we naturally become less stressed, passionate, and creative about our work allowing success to follow naturally.
Sometimes we all need a little reminder that our chosen life work isn't just about money. Yes, money is pretty helpful to have but often we get so stressed about earning it that we never really get to enjoy the things we do have: our friends, our family, and others that we make connections with each day.

A great little guide for the wanta-be entrepreneur who doesn't have a mentor to help them go from W-2 worker to self-employed!Review Date: 2007-04-29
I really liked this book a lot. It was a very good first-hand book written by a small business owner about his experiences starting, managing, and prospering as a freelance illustrator and/or graphic designer. His writing style was not exactly stellar. But it certainly was clear. The 20 chapters included in the book fell into the following 4 topics:
1. STARTING THE FIRM
>>Where Do You Start?
>>Off on the Right Foot
>>Creating a Plan for Your Business
>>Developing Your Financial Plans
>>Forms, Charts & Templates
>>Pricing Your Work and Getting Paid
2. MANAGING THE FIRM
>>Why Should You Freelance?
>>Setting Up Shop
>>Managing Your New Studio
3. RAINMAKING FOR THE FIRM
>>Bring in Clients
>>How to Get Noticed
>>What Goes in the Portfolio
>>Marketing on the Web
4. POSSIBLE MARKETS
>>The Magazine Market
>>Selling to the Newspapers
>>Working with Advertising Agencies
>>Selling to Book Publishers
>>The Greeting Card Market
>>Working with Art and Design Studios
>>Selling to Small Business
Since I am not an illustrator or a graphic designer I did not have much use for the fourth topic. But it was interesting to read about. I regularly counsel wanta-be entrepreneurs about how to start a small business; I'm a volunteer SCORE counselor. And the material covered in the first three topics above are exactly what I talk about with my SCORE clients. I highly recommend this book to anybody wanting to start their own small consulting practice. It does a wonderful job discussing the topics.
My biggest complaint with the book is the tendency of the author to recommend outsourcing so many functions: accounting, taxes, and Web site design and construction. I think these things should be fully understood by the small business owner and probably done by the owner herself. When the business grows to have a few employees, then the employees can do those tasks if the owner wants to do that.
I would have written the section on choice of business structure differently. Keep in mind that LLCs can be either single member or multi member. An LLC can elect to be taxed as a sole proprietorship (single member), a partnership (multi member), or a C Corporation. Also, a multi member LLC will have to file a partnership tax return. A good book on the subject that I recommend you read to supplement this book is Structuring Your Business (ISBN: 1593371772). I highly recommend forming an LLC and electing to have it taxed as a C Corporation. Just give yourself a bonus at year-end so the corporation retains no earnings. If your business is a corporation it is less likely to be audited by the IRS. 5 stars!

The Best Self- Help Book I Have ReadReview Date: 2008-05-27
I have been going through an extremely stressful time, and it was very needed. It is a deep book, but it is written in a nice, relaxing and caring way. I love the way the author injects personal experiences into the book because it makes the author and the book seem more real. Most books like this preach to the reader and tend to make the person feel inadequate.

How to design a good performance review systemReview Date: 2007-05-17
"Rather than a painful yearly event, performance appraisals can be viewed as a discussion, a culmination of small meetings held throughout the evaluation period."
In other words, performance review grows out of supervision. The rest of the book assumes that those "discussions" are going on. They're necessary to the process, but they're not the subject of the book.
The authors also make the point that: "In one form or other, performance reviews will continue to be a fact of our work life. This book is designed to cut through the anxiety and make the process, or series of discussions, more pleasant and productive."
Even though there are some people calling for the abolition of performance reviews as we know them, that's not likely to happen on a large scale any time soon. If the place that you work has a formal performance appraisal process now, you can count on having to deal with it for years to come.
I assume that if you're considering purchasing this book you will either be looking for ways to make your company's performance review system better or you will be looking for ways to make the process of actually doing performance reviews with your subordinates less daunting. For that reason, I'll split my analysis and recommendations into two parts.
Designing the Performance Review System
If you are responsible for designing or re-designing the performance review system in your organization, this is a book you should read. The research that's referred to matches up well with research I've done and read. The authors do a good job of presenting it and drawing conclusions.
They're also thorough. There's discussion of the current state of performance reviews, supervisor-employee relationships, scorecards, compensation, and much more.
Working Managers
If you are a working manager who has to do appraisals within your organization's system you will find some helpful material here, too. There's good discussion of how appraisals go off track. The authors cover different kinds of rating errors. And, there's material on actually conducting the appraisal.
But this part of the book is not as strong as the part about designing formal appraisal systems. There's not much depth or reach to the material on face-to-face discussion of behavior and performance issues.
That's because those are peripheral issues for the authors in this book. If you want more on face to face discussion, read my book, Performance Talk: the one-on-one part of leadership, which deals specifically with that aspect of supervision.
That's a quibble, though. Stress-Free Performance Appraisals is a solid, well-researched and well-written book that can help you improve the performance review process in your company.

Fresh Perspective to a Tired, Worn TopicReview Date: 2003-10-20
The text is, surprisingly, useful for human resources professionals, managers, and employees. It is visually attractive and chocked full of valuable questions, extensive documentation, great examples from well-regarded organizations, and ideas to cover a variety of cultures and performance appraisal philosophies. As examples of their recommendations, the authors weave -- chapter-by-chapter -- the scenarios of three fictional employees with varying performance levels. The book is an easy read in about three hours.

Superperformance - A Better WayReview Date: 2008-04-08
Having languished under many corporate structures over my career that stress "projects before people" it was refreshing to see that Dave has accurately identified a methodology for exciting human passion, validating the contributions of the individual and utilizing state-of-the-art process tools to optimize a company's performance.
Practically-speaking, I'm involved as the President/CEO of two start-up companies and the powerful business/people framework described in Dave's book is what I intend to implement going forward to create a different kind of workplace. I fully expect to see results commensurate with those he describes.
This is a thought provoking read for the leader looking to drive sustainable achievement in his/her organization.

Sure your black belts can demonstrate the potential of a great ROI and of course, the toolbox approach appeals to your engineering mindset, but can you answer one question with a resounding YES?
Is every person in your company a super performer?
As a long time proponent of leading from the middle, it pains me to concede that the CEO can change the culture of a company faster and more firmly than a troop of directors.
Culture change is the secret. Stop rewarding the few for analysis and start acknowledging the masses for performance.
Six sigma shows you a toolbox. Dave Guerra helps you design a roadmap. Put those expensive tools in the back of the truck and start this journey!
