This is a fun game!
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2000-04-03
We received this game as a gift and began to play it right away. The game requires some knowledge of art, but focuses more on the art itself and how it makes you feel. It's a terrific game for families, even children under age 12 can play. The most fun that we had were with brainstorming questions, where we had to list 3 facts about something (Andy Warhol, art found in the Vatican, etc.) and then try to match with the other player. Other types of questions include your response to a piece of art. Everyone looks at one painting and then answers a question. The responses are read aloud by one player and you have to match the player with his/her response. This is a good way to expose both children and adults to art.

One of FF's best Sci-fi gamebooks
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2001-01-16
Many FF fans disapproved of 'science fiction'. They were either poorly written or didn't suit the general fantasy theme the series mostly published. However, only a few notable FFs of sci-fi nature made it through - 'Rebel Planet', 'Robot Commando', and the third: 'The Rings of Kether'.

Andrew Chapman's earlier attempts at sci-fi didn't go down well at all, so FF#15 was at first regarded with suspicion. However, he'd revised his methods at planning and concentrated on improving his reputation. Although there were no new rules as such, there was a lot more to the story itself, and some gripping moments. It's a classic whodunnit, where the reader (YOU!) decides which leads to follow - in this sense, it was admirably complex, just like a real crime thriller.

However, Rings of Kether lost one star due to the minimal number of opponents. I finished this book having fought about four or five encounters, whereas ten would have been nearer the required mark. Despite this drawback, I think this is perhaps Andrew Chapman's most involved gamebook, although the illustrations fail to complement this marvellous sci-fi adventure. Gary Mayes (ironically, illustrator of the doomed Space Assassin FF#12) would have been better suited to this one, as he definitely inspired Rebel Planet.

I suggest any late FF fans to buy this as one of the top three SF gamebooks around.

What I wanted...

Review Date: 2007-07-24
First off, I enjoyed reading this book. The history of the city tinged with Mythos lore made for a fun evening diversion. My practical use for the book in the game was more indirect, however.

I was running the players through "Look to the Future" in Shadows of Yog-Sothoth (which takes place in New York). I found this book to be extremely helpful in setting the mood for that chapter of the campaign. The characters wanted to know where hotels, restaurants, etc. were, and Secrets of New York delivered.

I haven't had the chance to run either scenario, but they both look promising.

I would certainly recommend this book to any Keeper.

Good intro to THE most popular PC sound card
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2000-12-11
This fat book, written by a two tech guys at Creative Labs and two independent tech writers have put together the definitive reference for legacy SoundBlaster 8bit and 16bit hardware up to the SB16. For PC users who want to progress beyond games.

Covers the basics still applicable for newer sound cards. About 1/2 the book includes configuring and using Win Apps for music MIDI keyboards, wavetable synthesis, sequencing, WAV recording, speech recognition, text-to-speech, and intro to sound card programming.

This book is often at libraries, used bookstores, and close-out bins.

very good

Review Date: 2008-05-22
i bought this book while touring the gettysburg battlefield for my 4 and 7 year olds. written by patricia pingry and illustrated by stephanie mcfetridge britt, i think that it is a fine "board" booklet introducing the american civil war, the battle, and, of course, lincoln's gettysburg address. i've gotta give it to them - there've been hundreds of thousands of pages written about gettysburg. reviewing, selecting information for incorporation into a book such as this must be difficult. i thought that it was very good selection and writing. the illustrations were excellent. so many of the soldiers appeared to be quite young - this has the potential to bring the reader in and relate better but it also could instill some sense of fear that parents must address with their child. as a lover of history, i try everything to get my children interested in it. (i think i might be accomplishing this). overall, i think that this is a very good book for children that must be read with parents, so that they can explain and discuss peace, war, values, vulnerabilities ... i think that it is worth the new price (if you get free shipping).

My daycare children love this book
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2000-06-06
I was so happy to find a book that teaches how to do different string games. I never knew there were so many! It made it so much easier to have this book come with its own string. The children that have used this book vary in ages from 5 to 11. It was great to see the older children reading to the younger children and practicing it together. I have to admit I enjoyed doing this with my class.
