A bit New Agey but Mystical tooReview Date: 2007-10-26
I particularly enjoyed the parts where he explores the subtleties expressed in the Hawaiian language and how they relate to place names and metaphysical practices and experiences. I think the author does a good job of connecting modern places and practices to traditional Hawaiian belief and faith practices. His chapter on the Big Island's place of refuge is exceptional in this regard.

Dominate Fear and Live Your DreamsReview Date: 2006-01-23
Stack the Logs is a very appropriate title for a book that will start a fire of creativity in your soul. While reading you may find that some ideas are like logs you can put on the fire of your dreams to keep them alive and other logs can be used to build the actual reality, so your dreams magically appear in your life.
The success framework helps you discover the ways to conquer fear and embrace success like a trusted friend. Can you really achieve everything you have ever wanted to achieve? This book is a great place to start. The chapters in this book were inspired by a letter from Frank Lunn's father who gave him a seven-part blueprint for a successful life. He expands upon these ideas and explains how to apply the principles to real life.
"We must exert great effort to overcome the gravity pull of the force keeping us from taking action on our journey." ~Frank Lunn
To win the battle over procrastination, he gives ten tips and includes creative comments about how to use your moods to advantage, how to focus on the most important task through prioritizing and why breaking larger projects into smaller jobs makes it less overwhelming. Once you break free from procrastination, you can then keep the momentum going by destroying self-limiting beliefs. The ability to pick yourself up after making mistakes is also discussed, as is the element of risk and why fear can thwart your attempts to try again. How can you convert discouragement and setbacks into fuel for your success?
If you enjoy a challenge, want to face your fears and want to reinvent yourself, Frank Lunn has ideas to inspire and motivate you in your search for your dream life. Stack the Logs is a book filled with wisdom and encouragement. Stack the Logs is an empowering and inspiring read that will encourage success in all areas of your life.
A portion of the proceeds from the sale of this book also will be donated to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. This book was written while Frank Lunn's son was fighting and defeating leukemia at the hospital.

Inspirational, Powerful and Generous!Review Date: 2004-06-12
I had the honor and privledge of meeting the author when he appeared at Book Expo America in Chicago. Frank is the real deal. A hard working, kind and generous person who has learned many lessons and wants to share those powerful experiences with others. His story and the story of his son's recovery are inspirational and I share his desire to support the Mission of St. Judes. A significant portion of the proceeds of every book sold is donated to this very worthy cause. Join Frank is his quest to change the world for the better.
Not Just Another Self Help BookReview Date: 2004-05-15
In my experience with interviewing many men and women who inspire and encourage people to live to their fullest potential, I felt a special connection to the approach Mr. Lunn presents. It is based on the reality that living a successful life requires dedicated participation. That life is never predictable and how to be prepared for such moments. The language of the book is down to earth, enormously inspiring and it makes so much sense. This book makes for an excellent gift to someone you care about who could use a shot of practical optimism.
It is my opinion that this is one self help book that literally is for anybody and everybody. Plus it is coupled with a high humanitarian cause that you can feel very good about getting involved with. Don't stop with reading the book, visit his website (www.stackthelogs.com) where you may find yourself inspired to help in his mission to help children who are in a fight for their lives.

Delightful Healing in Wise Secrets of AlohaReview Date: 2007-04-18
From the moment I started reading Wise Secrets of Aloha, I could feel the sacred beauty of Hawaii and wanted to go there immediately! (I never had that pull before.) Thanks to Garnette Arledge's exquisite writing, I could feel the fragrant breezes, the ocean, the sunlight and all the lushness and loving energy that permeate the atmosphere there. And then we meet Harry Uhane Jim who so generously shares his delightful spirit and the healing messages and energies of Lomilomi. This book is a great blessing to our planet. It teaches us. It heals us. I'll be forever grateful to Kahuna Harry for allowing these sacred and invaluable teachings to emerge into the world market; and to Garnette Arledge whose deep sensitivity to the essence of this work and prodigious literary skills make her the perfect author of this gem. May it heal millions.
Genuine aloha spiritReview Date: 2007-06-04
Harry is native Hawaiian, and his wife is the granddaughter of Kahuna Papa Bray, one of the first Hawaiians to teach Huna. This book is filled with Huna concepts and will be treasured by Huna people. Those who believe Huna is not Hawaiian will still find nuggets of traditional practice, and his stories growing up on Kauai are wonderful glimpses into small kid time. His lineage is the Manoi and Kaimikaua families, and he learned from Auntie Rev. Mary, a minister in Kapaia on Kauai.
The book focuses on philosophy and personal stories, briefly describing a few treatment protocols. Harry says he gives Temple Lomilomi but it is quite different from what is described in Nancy Kahalewai's book, Hawaiian Lomilomi: Big Island Massage. The receiver is fully clothed and focuses on breathing. The giver mostly uses elbows. The work is not just physical but also verbal. Though he doesn't call it ho'oponopono, he describes a process of letting go of the past. The book includes heart-warming stories from people who have been healed by Harry's work.
Harry has a creative approach to the Hawaiian language and is not constrained by the Pukui Dictionary. Native Hawaiian scholars who are dedicated to perpetuating their language and who are deeply aware of its esoteric subtleties will disagree with the rationale for many of his spellings and definitions. There are some factual errors about place names and history, and some of his interpretations seem like New Age flights of fancy, but some of the more far-out ideas are actually documented historically. For example, across all the islands the Pleiades are considered the ancestral home, as Harry relates.
In some of the marketing, Harry is referred to as "the last lomilomi kahuna" but the book makes clear he is only the last of his family's lineage. He is not the last in existence. They may not call themselves "kahuna," but there are masters practicing openly today, and others who quietly keep their lomilomi in the 'ohana or family.
I give 5 stars because this book is filled with aloha spirit, and is an authentic contribution to the literature reflecting the diversity of native practice. I hope it inspires others to document their family lineages. This is now only the third book on lomilomi (I'm publishing a fourth in October 2007). The person with a genuine heart and sincere desire to learn about Hawaiian traditions should read all four books to begin to understand the diversity of lomilomi, and the complexity of Hawaiian spirituality.

A precious classic of Hawaiian traditionsReview Date: 2007-04-09
The book has 10 chapters: Time Before Time, Mana, 'Ohana, Kahuna, 'Aumakua, Pono, History and Mythology, Huna, Aloha Is, and 'Imua. It begins with one of the most wonderful stories in Hawaiian tradition, the bowl of light. "Every child born has at birth a bowl of perfect Light. If he tends his Light during his life it will grow in strength and he can do many things..." This parable is a precious teaching that gives us a new way to look at life.
Interwoven with the stories from the family are Pali's personal reminiscences of her life in Hawai'i. My favorites are the ones about her husband, Koko Willis. Koko was 100% menehune, as he liked to say, and "coincidentally" a member of the Kame'ekua 'ohana. Indeed, the story of how they met and eventually married is one "coincidence" after another.
This book is especially important for anyone interested in Huna to learn more about authentic Hawaiian traditions.
Readers of this book will experience a delightful journey to old Hawai'i that will give them new perspectives on how to live their lives in balance.
Beautiful Book About Hawaiian CultureReview Date: 2008-05-19
This book was an outstanding introduction to Hawaiian culture, told through the eyes of the author. It is a personal book, part memoir, and filled with Hawaiian mo`olelo (stories) that describe the true Hawaiian culture. It is more personal than comprehensive, and does indeed discuss "the Hawaiian way", helping me to understand the intricacies of this complex (and, paradoxically simple, too) and precious way of life, and how and why it has conflicted so with the Euro-American way of living. The author does this through personal stories and gentle explanations, showing more than telling, and helping the reader to appreciate the beauty of an exotic and wonderful culture.
The author discusses the concept of mana, the importance of the `ohana to Hawaiians, `aumakua...and popular misunderstandings as well, including much about huna. It is a beautifully illustrated book with simple black-and-white drawings that add beauty and some personal photos as well. Most importantly, it is a Hawaiian book, done in the Hawaiian way (which is non-linear), including genealogy, and most importantly, stories...it was a treasure to read. It includes a glossary for the many unfamiliar Hawaiian words.
Reading this book felt like a privilege. I feel like the author's culture was being shared with me in a vulnerable and gentle way that gave me so much insight and appreciation for her and for the Hawaiian people.
Highly recommended.

Nä Mo`olelo Lomi is a blessing! It feels sacred. I love all the history, descriptions, definitions, and stories. It's full of wisdom and teachings. It's especially alive for me, and probably to everyone who practices or receives lomi massage and Hawaiian herbs or to anyone who loves the Hawaiian culture. The presence of the küpuna (elders, ancestors) is strong; they're sharing in their own talk story way. This book teaches deeply by evoking images and feelings of Lomi in the old days. I can feel Makana Chai's sincerety and respect for the people, their culture and the `äina (land). Mahalo nui loa for her aloha.

Natural healing MedicinesReview Date: 2008-03-29
classic fundamental book on Hawaiian healingReview Date: 2006-09-26
It has two sections. The first section is a story about the system of Hawaiian healing, from birth to death. It vividly describes kahuna healing with ho'oponopono (forgiveness), pule (prayer), pi kai (spiritual cleansing), la'au lapa'au (herbal remedies), lomilomi (massage), ha (breath) and many more traditional practices. The story is based on reliable sources including oral histories from 18th and 19th kahuna.
In the second section of the book is a wealth of primary materials. She has copies of the pages of a kahuna's medical book, oral histories, and reprints of historical texts.
As the editor of the Bishop Museum book on lomilomi massage, I relied on this book as an authentic resource that accurately portrays kahuna practice.
Anyone interested in alternative healing or Hawaiian culture should have this book!

Nostalgic Mystery Set in Post-War HawaiiReview Date: 2005-01-13
Janice has been invited to stay in the home of family friends Luther and Maude Avery. The Averys own a large estate near Honolulu, which includes a native Hawaiian village which is the location that Janice would like to use for her movie. Janice must keep her movie-making plans a secret, though, until she gets the Hawaiian villagers to agree. However, immediately upon her arrival in Honolulu, Janice is warned by her native friends that her host's home is a dangerous and unhappy place and she shouldn't stay there. On her second day in Hawaii, Janice discovers the body of a beautiful young hula dancer, apparently a drowning victim in a cove on her host's estate. A series of apparent mishaps gets the attention of amateur detective Lily Wu, who comes to the aid of Janice and identifies who was behind the drowning of the hula dancer.
This was an extremely enjoyable book, and it was hard for me to believe that the book was written more than 50 years ago. I especially enjoyed the descriptions of Lily Wu's Chinese family. "The Kahuna Killer" is the second novel in the "Lily Wu quartet", a group of four novels featuring Janice Cameron and Lily Wu. I am very glad to have discovered the Rue Morgue Press, which is publishing a number of "classic" murder mysteries popular during before 1960. This particular edition was a joy to read and well-edited.
