Very exciting new approach to integration

This book was very solid technically, and a fascinating read. On the development side, it is filled with ideas and examples, some of which showed me completely different approaches to common problems. Conceptually, the book is even richer, not only explaining complex technologies in simple ways, but showing how some seemingly unrelated technological developments from the past few years can fit and work together. Overall, I think the book's most worthwhile aspect is the way it married its overall vision, which anticipates the future of integration and knowledge-driven computing, with very specific design and code examples that I could incorporate into my practice right away. A top book for people who want to stay ahead of the pack in the latest practical developments that will shape information architecture for the future.

No-nonsense Java book
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.

I started with Deitel's 'How to Program Java' book to teach myself Java. This wasn't a bad book, but there were so much text in it that I was confused and not making much progress when I reached the chapter on object-oriented programming. I could'nt see the wood for the trees. Then I bought Bruce Eckel's 'Thinking in Java' and I almost gave up the thought of ever learning Java. I thought you need to have an intellect of an Einstein or Newton to understand stuff like Java, i.e. encapsulation, inheritance and polymorphism.

While browsing at the local computer bookshop, I chanced upon Prof Liang's book and bought it. Prof Liang knows how to teach Java. Some authors like to use analogies to illustrate a point, but not Prof Liang. He does not beat around the bush; he goes for the meat. There is very little vegetables in his book. He takes a complex concept and explains it in ordinary language. I like the chapter on exception-handling; in a couple of paragraphs he has given the reader a helicopter view of what exception handling is all about. I also like the examples, where judicious comments are put at the appropriate places to help the reader along. The number of lines of code in the examples are about 50 to 130. This is just the right amount.

I give this book 5 stars. This is truly a no-nonsense Java book.

Great Mind. This is it. Touch it and get galvanized!
Helpful Votes: 10 out of 18 total.
Review Date: 2000-11-21
This is a 'hard-to-read' book. The great mind builds up the world on his simple principles. He does not use his inventions that are now known as differentiation and integration. He only uses Euclid's geometry to build the world upon his three principles, with the majesty like God's. It's not so good as a course book for mechanics. He takes the hard but rigorous way than to take the way that is easy but yet lacks the rigour in his time. The Door to Heaven is narrow and hard to follow. But you can feel how a human mind can be great by just opening this book and look at the scratch of the lion's claw.

Getting Started with J2EE

This is a well presented walk through the world of J2EE design and programming for the novice to intermediate Java user. Yawn presents a simple application that is expanded in each chapter as new concepts are introduced. All of the examples are provided on an enclosed and it helped to be able to run them in parallel while trying to understand the material in the various chapters. I highly recommend it.

Best Java Resource
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2008-04-02
This is the best resource for learning Java I have found. The book assumes the reader knows nothing about the language, starting with the most basic elements of the programming language and moving ahead to more complex topics that build on those elements. The code examples are in colored text so that it is very easy to read. Tips are given throughout the text for avoiding common errors that Java programmers fall into. The information is also in depth - every aspect of the language is explained in detail, and this is why the book is so thick. I don't think you could find a more thorough book. It's ideal for both beginners and experts.

Two books for the price of one, but not for beginners
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2008-05-14
The only complaint I have with this book is the word 'Basics' in the title. As the subtitle suggests, it's expected the reader is at least familiar with common EAI patterns. But it's better if the reader has Patterns of Enterprise Application Architecture (The Addison-Wesley Signature Series) as well; it is a important prerequisite to getting the most out of this book.

The authors also assume the reader has read the docs on JCAPS and is at least familiar, if not proficient with some of the tools. With that in mind, this book and its companion CD relate each discussed pattern to the appropriate components and configuration in JCAPS. It took me a fair amount of time to figure out some of these solutions on my own, and I was pleased to have my hunches confirmed by experts. Other pattern implementations were not apparent to me; I'll save a great deal of time using them as given.

The discussion is thorough, deliberate and complete, including drawbacks and limitations that go hand-in-hand with certain pattern solutions. These are valuable insights, but they can make the reading heavy work at times. I recommend chewing off no more than a chapter's worth of patterns at a time, and reading each pattern implementation twice before implementing it once.

The companion CD has very many screen shots of JCAPS in action, so don't be put off by the few illustrations in the printed text. The PDF on the CD is almost 700 pages itself and provides detailed graphic cues for implementing the patterns as discussed.

Originally the price put me off a bit, even though I really need this book. Having browsed the companion CD as well, however, it's clear there was no small effort made in putting this book together. Still, I think the market could also use a book that just covers the fundamentals of using JCAPS. This guide is not for people getting started.
