Dave Sperling's The Internet Guide for English Language Teachers (Prentice Hall Regents) is a veritable gem, and like any gem what it lacks in its less than formidable size (150 pages) it makes up for in its reference value. Indeed, you might consider the book an essential Internet guide for English language teachers taking their first plunge into cyberspace. Experienced users will also find much in the book to recommend it. Dave a Net veteran, well-known for his excellent ESL Café, has whipped up a feast that covers the entire range of Internet services from using e-mail and communicating on the Net through to making your first Web page. Even getting ESL jobs. His many pages of favourite sites comprises a compelling treasure map that blazes a trail for the ESL practitioner eager to use the Internet to achieve best practice and successful outcomes for students. The book lists numerous sites to visit for research purposes, classroom material, interactive learning activities, games, student projects and much more. He even visits Australia to provide some local flavour. It's a very user-friendly book that touches on everything from emoticons to MOOS. Sperling cuts through the technobabble and dishes out, in very digestible servings, what many readers have always wanted to know but were too afraid to ask. Such readers are pointed to helpful sites on the Net that continue this process of demystification. At the end of the book is a useful glossary for all beginners. The Australian price for The Internet Guide for English Language Teachers is $24.95. I recommend that ESL centres and teachers considering venturing onto the Net, and those who want to reach in deeper, dig into their budgets and buy a copy. Get it while it's hot and steamy with the latest information.

This is a complete guide for ESL and ELT teachers from all around the world. You need a little knowledge on using and surfing the web, but if you don't have that knowledge, this book gives you the possibility of a quick tutorial on how to browse the net. It was really useful for me as a Teacher of English and Language Consulant in another counrty than the U.S. (Chile)

The fascinating real life problems caused by computer foulup
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 1998-07-28
This book is filled with true stories of the deadly and costly consequences of computer systems gone haywire. It is not technical and does not contain alot of techo-babble. Instead it deals with subjects such as surgical procedures gone wrong, airplane crashes, military mistakes, cases of mistaken identity and more...all caused by the misuse of computers or the misguded ideas of humans who use them. The author is a TV news reporter who presents this like an investigative reporter. However, he offers solutions and expert opinions on how to prevent each of these diasters from happening again. The question is: Is anybody listening ?

Good book for the lay public and casual technical readers

I like reading real-life experiences used to illustrate a technical point rather than a dry dissertation. Like 1 of the other reviewers - I feel that this title should be reprinted but it should be updated and revised in light of changes in the software/hardware/systems world since the time it was published. AND it needs to have both an index and pointers to sources (i.e. footnotes, bibliography, etc.) The lack of the latter 2 items diminished the usefulness of the book for me as I could not follow up/get more in-depth information and I could not easily find a particular fact or passage I wanted to find in the book.

I wrote this for the other entry at Amazon.com with the same title, same author, different subtitle. This book should be reprinted. With the upcoming Y2K bug as well as other incidents of software creating problems for people's lives, this book is necessary reading. It contains actual real life information about the extent of the problem and how a society that relies on computers as much as ours does is vunerable.

Neil Rubenking's (the author of the immensely popular Delphi Programming For Dummies) book is a treasure trove of helpful techniques that will benefit every Delphi programmer. For example, he has the best "force a single instance of a running program" code example I've seen. The only complaint I have is that the index isn't as good as it could be. Not for beginning Delphi programmers, but even those with moderate Delphi experience will benefit from the eclectic mix of topics covered in this book.

Each Delphi programmer here now has his own copy.

A full range of techniques and tricks about Delphi and Windows integration. Each technique is presented using a very well focused program, i.e. the minimal piece of clean and elegant Delphi code demonstrating the solution. Even better, the problems and solutions (about 200 of them) presented in this book are really useful! On the first day we got the book, we found ready made solutions to problems we had discovered but hadn't solved before (or hadn't found time to investigate before). This is one of the rare books we don't share: each Delphi programmer here now has his own copy.

it sounds that it include so many tricks.

Not for the beginner, this book really delivers on the promise of its title. An hour after opening it, I was doing things I'd wanted to do for a long time.Rubenking starts by showing you how to take control of a form's basic appearance -- yes, you can remove the caption and keep the border! He goes onto help you make Delphi's various components behave the way you'd like, and includes information on accessing helpful Windows API functions. Some ofthe other topics are date math, DLLs, the application object, data-aware controls -- and lots more. Sophisticated topics are explained in comprehensiblelanguage. Both the 16- and 32-bit versions are covered. This book can help you reach the next level of Delphi programming in a short time

How many times did you read a book, follow the examples and run it in the computer, and at end of it you can't write a program by yourself?
Delphi Unleashed is different! Just in the initial chapters you'll be learning the best way: experimenting.

While some books are introductory, others are for the experts, to be used as reference material. There are books that try conciliate both things, but few succeed. This one does it.

Charles Calvert, with your soft writing style and some sense of humour, leads you to explore the language from the beginnings to the most advanced topics, in a soft and pleasant way. He emphasises the most important points, even repeating some fundamental concepts, and pointing the trickiest subjects. Everything is minutely explained. It is impossible to not understand.

The examples are well formulated and are all reproduced on the accompanying CD, which carries too a bunch of tools and libraries.

The coverage of the book is fantastic. From the structure of a Delphi program, to variables and looping. From the use of functions, to strings and pointers. The object programming and client server techniques are explored in depth, as well as OLE, SQL and multimedia subjects.

The didactic is impeccable. An excellent book !

This is definitely a great source for finding Biblical locations and referencing them to present day geography however it is so much more than that. Biblical history is summarized in charts and diagrams. The Time Lines of the Old Testament and New Testament reference the books of the Bible to Biblical history, World history, and politcal rulers (Old Testament) of the time. Activities of Jesus' life are indexed by date on the NT Time Line. Much attention is given to Paul's travels in text as well as with maps. The fold-out maps(seperate item) are a great help to quickly locate areas however this source provides even more details to the maps and offers much more than can be summarized on the fold-outs.

This book is a must have for all newbies to ActiveX Control Development. Tom Armstrong shows you how to develop a robust ActiveX Control using the most efficient routes.. He leads you past all of the troublespots and guides you with the best methods. I developed my first ActiveX Control within 4 days after walking through all of the great samples he had in his book.. If asked, I would recommend this book to anyone. It's a must have.

ActiveX is by no means an easy topic to understand. However, if you are determined to wade into ActiveX anyway this is about the best introduction to the subject that you will find. The author takes you through the material with clear and concise instruction and touches upon COM, Automation, ActiveX and ATL. If you are an advanced COM programmer info dont bother with this book, but if you are looking for a introduction to ActiveX that you might actually understand, this book is absolutely the best I've ever seen.

Tom Armstrong's development of a simple class that grows up to be an automation control is very straight forward. The clear logical progression is well supported by the accompanying source code that I compiled and worked with as I traversed through the book. I was able to apply the techniques directly in creating my own activeX control for use with our product. There are a few improvements that should be incorporated into the next edition: 1. A proof- reader needs to be hired...too many typeos...Figure 6.5 on p.256 is not even readable. 2. A small "snippet" of detailed usage intructions for certain utilities like the ActiveX Control Pad presented in Chap12. Otherwise a keeper!!!

I have both copies of this book (for Pagemaker 5 and for 6). It is the best book on the market by far for beginners in desktop publishing. I would like to use this book as a textbook in an adult ed program. The students in this class are novices in computer experience but need something basic for their small businesses or church offices or small private schools. I sincerely hope this book keeps pace with new upgrades of Adobe Pagemaker, the easiest and most versatile layout program on the market for the small business, inexperienced computer user.

This is kind of book that leads you from "inconcious unawareness" to "concious mastery" not only on PageMaker, but also on design at the whole. Everybody knows that one cannot learn design by book; after reading "Desktop Publishing by Design" which is fulfilled with so many tips and techniques, advices and examples, one won't be so certain about the beginning of this sentence.

I'm a novice designer who recently took on the responsibility for my company's quarterly magazine. This book gave me a thorough introduction to layout, typography, and electronic prepress, with lots of intelligent examples. I also picked up dozens of time-saving Pagemaker 6.0 shortcuts I might never have gotten around to learning if I'd just played with the program and skimmed the manual.

I was able to make immediate improvements to both the design and the production process of the magazine issue I was working on. I plan to read the book again--it's huge, by the way, and packed with peanuts--in a few months to get all the stuff I was unable to absorb the first time. Totally worthwhile.

The White House has a new executive pastry chef,

Westport, Conn. (Dressing Room: A Homegrown
Restaurant) where the emphasis is on locally grown and
organic foods.

As the top pastry chef, Yosses will be responsible for
dessert menus for state dinners and holiday

work recently when he served as a holiday pastry chef,
and has extensive experience at New York City

"Chef Yosses has impressed us from the start with his
original and delicious creations. He has a light touch
with desserts, and the enthusiasm with which he

Good Introduction to digital design

Review Date: 2003-01-13
We used this book for an intro course on computer engineering.

The book, despite being the 1st edition, is very clear and concise, and I turned to it a number of times when the lectures weren't as clear and specific as they might be. Duecks book delves into a bit more detail with more examples {on things like flipflops, latches etc} than other similar books on the market. It also relates the material learned to actual computers looking at the structure of RAM in home PC's.

We didn't use the VHDL or CPLD portions of the book, so I cannot comment on their usefulness... but judging by the rest of the book they should be well written.

I recommend this book for a good introduction to digital electronics.

The teaching of digital electronics using CPLD is very useful, the book covers theory, truth table, gate level implementation. The examples show you how to create a module, for instance,a multiplexer. It doesnt only end here, it further demonstrate the application of the multiplexer. From there, you can have better understanding from gate level up to system level. I benefit a lot from this approach. The examples are very useful despite I am not writing in VHDL.

The book also explain the internal architecture of CPLD, starting from the history development of programmable logic devices. If you want to learn on CPLD, this is definitely the book for you, even if you are not using VHDL.

Good for beginners

Review Date: 2005-09-02
This is a good book for beginners to digital logic and VHDL. It spends a lot of time explaining how different components like encoders, decoders, muxes, state machines, etc work. That's good for people who haven't been exposed to the material before. If you want to learn that stuff and apply it in VHDL, it's a great book. If you're just trying to learn one or another aspect, there are probably better books out there. If you want to learn VHDL from the book and already know a fair amount about digital logic, it's tough because you keep on skipping stuff you already know and and then later find out that there was VHDL information buried in that section on seven-segment displays. Similarly, people just trying to learn digital logic who are uninterested in VHDL will probably find that they spend a lot of time skipping past explanation of VHDL. Add in the fact that lots of space is taken up by screenshots of Altera software, and the book ends up containing surprisingly little information for its size. People who want a thorough discussion of digital logic or VHDL should look elsewhere. Beginners will probably be right at home.

This is one of the best presentations of digital electronics in the CPLD Altera MAX Plus II design enviroment and VHDL I have ever seen. I do not know of another digital book like it.

It also includes Altera's MAX Plus II software on CD in back of the book along with design files for use with the book prepared by the author.

The book explains how digital cameras work, what the differences are between various technologies and gives you ideas about what to look for in purchasing a digital camera. There are chapters explaining the various camera options and their proper use and comparing them to 35 mm tools. There's information on composition and lighting and other standard photographic concepts, but the author also looks into batteries and battery life, photo manipulation software (Paint Shop Pro is the program used in the descriptions), incorporating photos into Power Point and scanning photos. The book would be perfect for someone who had a little bit of experience using a scanner or digital camera and uses Paint Shop Pro. For others, there is still a good deal of solid information within.

Being new to computers, graphics programs and digital photography I have had to rely on instruction manuals which have more often than not been inadequate. When I ordered my camera I also ordered a book specific to the camera because I had read that the instruction manual and CD were inadequate or impractical. When I purchased PSP I bought an additional instruction book. All seem to assume prior camera or graphics knowledge. When I started to read Digital Photography Answers! I knew I had found what I needed. It's like having a knowledgeable and patient friend here. The book is extremely well laid out and indexed and seems to assume that the reader is intelligent but new to the genre, and includes basic information in addition to more detailed info. If you're new to digital photography and struggling with your graphics program (or even if you're not), this book is wonderful.

Great book, has info on almost everything!

I've had a 35mm camera for years and got a digital camera recently. I love this book -- I've read others but this one had all the info I was looking for. It talked about compositional skills, plus how to take and edit digital pictures. The fact that I've framed a picture from my camera on the wall I pretty much owe to this book.

An excellent resource for novices and experts alike

As a weekend shutterbug, I find the world of digital photography fairly daunting. In fact, I'm not real adept with ordinary photography, either. That's why Dave Johnson's book was such a pleasant surprise: it not only taught me everything I need to know about digital photography, but also gave me great insight into basic photographic method. I'm hard-pressed to imagine a more complete or well-written book on the subject.
