Publishing Books

I have ample reason to be concerned about my health largely because of four ex-wives and the crazyness currently going on in my house between my bulldog (Colonel) and my current wife's annoying tabby (Bobo!). It doesn't help that I'm a beerswilling carnivore and largely a lazy couchloaf. Also complicating matters is the undeniable fact that my brooding spouse is a horrible cook and routinely serves beef-oriented t.v. dinners or worse (greaseburgers from the local fast food joint).

That's where this handy tome comes in. One of the girls from the bar I've been seeing on the sly has been trying to get me to start incorporating more vegetables in our relationship (in addition to the meat) and suggested several books (not this one) to help me get started. While those books had some value, this book really told me what I needed to know about the nutritional values of various vegetarian diets and how to make up for the nutirtion I would be losing by giving up meat.

It's very informative, well-written, easy to understand, but somewhat short on recipes. As I've mentioned, Bessie isn't a very good cook--even when she has cook-by-numbers recipes (which basically means, even if this book had recipes it wouldn't be of much value to her) and that's too bad. Nevertheless, this is a very informative book and has surprisingly convinced me that it is possible to maintain nutrition while maintaining an all-vegie diet. Unfortunately, the recipes in this book (and those I found in several others) have failed to convince me that any of these vegie diets taste any better than the leaves and grass in my backyard.

As a result, I've scrapped the vegetarian route, started cooking for myself, stopped worrying about my health, and I'm staying away from the girls at the bar.

This is an excellent book. I decided to become vegetarian a few years ago both for health and ethical reasons and this one one of the first books I bought - its remained the one I turn to over and over again - especially when friends or relatives questions how healthy a vegetarian diet is and I need to educate them. Some of the most fascinating parts of this book talk about the history of the current meat-based diet and how the government pushed it and helped market meats of all sorts to get people to buy more (to help farmers out). Also though there is great info on how much protien a person actually needs and where you can get it from - its actually pretty easy to get all the protien you need over the course of a day. Since becoming vegetarian (really almost vegan except for the eggs I get from a lady down the street who really takes wonderful care of her chickens) I've never felt better. My husband has even voluntarily made the switch as well (spurred on by a few episodes of food poisoning at the local sandwich shop). Vegetarian is the way to go and this book will give you ALL the info you need to get rolling and keep others quiet when they criticize. Bon sante and Bon appetit!

This book is an excellent resource for beginning vegetarians who are dealing with a lot of new questions -- will this diet be adequate for me nutritionally? do I need to take supplements? what will I tell mom (hee hee)? This book tries to answer all the big questions, and does so quite admirably. It does have a few recipes at the back, which are not bad, but certainly, this is not a cookbook per se. For those looking for a ton of recipes instead of advice, I'd be more likely to recommend The Essential Vegetarian Cookbook (by Diana Shaw), a wonderful book full of tips, tricks, ingredients, glossaries, and 600 low fat recipes, many of which are adaptations of old favourites. Getting both these books would be an excellent beginning to any new vegetarian's bookshelf.

I thought this book was very thorough, yet easy to follow. Every recipe I've made has been very delicious. I was a vegetarian for 6 years before I became pregnant and began to eat meat for fear I wouldn't get enough protein my babe needed. I wish I had this book then, as the authors lay out precisely what you need for nourishment. My son and I now have a great reference so we can be healthy lacto-ovo vegetarians, and possibly convert my husband as well!

Easy to read and a good book to use as a jump-off point for more specific readings catering to your individual vegetarian interests.

This book has helped me in my treatment choices. I love the lay out and the real world information. Not scary just the facts no hearts and flowers. I have only just begun my battle with breast cancer. But this book lives in my bag that goes with me every where, doctor visits and just out to lunch. I find myself reaching for it to clarify info from doctors and to help friend and family to understand my treatment and options.
This is a must read for breast cancer families.

When I was diagnosed in 2005, I was absolutely overwhelmed with fear, information, and decisions. This book is the only one I found that made sense to me. It is clear, concise, and very encouraging. Dr. Link's approach is from a place of genuine respect and regard, and he knows exactly what survivors need to know right away. Reading this book really helped me make the best treatment decisions for myself, with the best information available. The book teaches survivors (who for the most part are not medical professionals, but will unfortunately have to get to that level pretty quickly) how to read pathology reports, and helps you formulate the questions you need to have answered to make your choices. I recommend it to everyone I know who is newly diagnosed.

Very good basic guide for one suffering from breast cancer, one problem was that it was 8 years outdated. Would have been better had it been updated, new treatments are always being discovered. It was a good overview, though.

A book for those who are newly diagnosed with cancer. The book describes in detail the different stages of breast cancer. It also discusses how individuals should see doctors for a second opinion. Another great part about the book is the differences in opinion about how to manage breast cancer, and the different paths to take.

I bought this book when my mother was diagnosed with breast cancer. The first advice it gives was a breath of fresh air in the middle of a maelstrom. It simply said "you have time." It also gives great advice on second opinions. Besides this first advice the book is filled with general information written in easy to understand english. Some of the info applies some of it doesn't, everyones cancer is different. I greatly recomend this book to all those of us faced with this challenge. It provides you with the information doctors usually don't take the time to give you. A must read before your next doctors visit. One caveat: if you are looking for a feel good read this is not it... this is a serious book of medical information.

What I love about this book is the way Dorothy Sayers manages to interweave a complex mystery story with the gentle story of the beginning of a marriage. This book is funny, tender, and occasionally sad. It brings all the threads of the earlier Lord Peter/Harriet Vane books together. This book is my favourite of the Lord Peter books, along with Gaudy Night.

Loved this story of Peter & Harriet at the beginning of their married life. Will never forget the solution, it's imprinted in my mind.

A mystery, a love story, a classic work of literature.

After many years, Peter and Harriet marry. Those who have loved them are overjoyed (a feeling readers of earlier Sayers novels share). But murder follows the detective and his author bride-- a body is found on their honeymoon.

I love this book because of what Dorothy Sayers has to say about love between friends and equals. You will care about every character in this wonderful book and appreciate her portrait of life in pre-World War II England.

Others have covered the ground of the story itself pretty well so I'll try to add something new.
I liked "The Unpleasantness at the Belonna Club" and "Whose Body?" somewhat better than this title.... BUT this one is really still just a SUPER classic English murder mystery. The inclusion of Harriet Vane (mystery-writing wife of Lord Peter Wimsey), into the Wimsey series was, in my opinion, a big plus. She really gives Wimsey someone to play off of, in addition to the ever-present and loyal Bunter, Wimsey's astute right-hand man.
This work precedes "Thrones, Dominations," which was an incomplete manuscript by Sayers at the time of her death and was finished by Jill Paton Walsh, who did a superb job of tying up this worthwhile project. (I recommend that you read the two works sequentially!)
So, I highly recommend this fine mystery to all fans of the genre -- it's at least equivalent in pleasure value to Christie's "The Murder of Roger Ackroyd."

This entry in the Lord Peter Whimsey/Harriet Vane series is a little unusual because it has more humor than usual. You get to see a more light hearted Lord Peter, at least until the murder. Agatha Christi concentrates a little more on the relations between Lord Peter and Harriet, starting just after thier engagement and continuing through the honeymoon. You will have to sit through a lot of letter and journal reading in the beginning, but it is worth wading through for the background. A delightful story.

This is possibly the most beautifully rendered graphic novel (if something of these dimensions can be called a novel) ever. Dave McKean is best known for doing the cover art for all 75 issues of Neil Gaiman's landmark Sandman comics series, and as the director of the independent film Mirrormask. Not all of his fans may know about McKean's solo comics work. Cages, his magnum opus, was originally released in 10 issues, over a period of 6 years, dogged by publishing difficulties and McKean's busy schedule. It was worth the wait, for within it McKean shows himself to be an extraordinary storyteller in his own right, as well as being a wonderful draughtsman and illustrator.

Worth every penny of the fifty bucks.

I read this book a couple of years ago, and reread it a few weeks ago. I have never come across a story like this, in particular a story TOLD like this. With an incredibly impressive array of visual/narrative techniques, McKean presents an allegory (if that's what it is; the book can be ambiguous concerning certain developments) of creativity as well as despair, abandonment, frustration, and above all, the realization that things are actually pretty wonderful, if we can manage to alter our perspectives.
This is one of the crowning achievements of the graphic medium, and a landmark in literature.

I've bought this graphic novel 3 years ago.
I've just read it in past 4 days.
Why?
I don't know.
Maybe I was afraid of it, maybe I wasn't ready for it yet.
I didn't know what to expect from that pages, that cages...
When I finished it today I was just... it's hard to explain the combination of feelings in my head and soul.
As a painter, graphic novel artist and comic strip teacher, I use to search for a new worlds, to find some new stories to tell to my friends and people that surrounds me.
And I'm aware of numerous traps that lurking behind every corner of creation.
I use to tell my students: Be creative, free your mind and fly through the limitless fields of mind, through the many rooms and hidden windows.
And than again, I find myself captured in some sort of cage.
But the love always sets me free.
Dave McKean is one of my few favorite artists.
A genius that combines techniques, always searching for some new expression.
In this complex and moving book, you can find him using sometimes scratchy ink outlines an rapid brush movenents, everything black and white, (with some blue and greenish tone).
Also a few in colour painted panels, an photomontages.
The storyline is good, sometimes monotone but filled with phylosophy about God, art, creation, love, meanings of existence...
I think that I'm going to read it few more times... There's something left, hidden between those dark walls, and spattered lines.
But all I can do is recommend this amazing 500 pgs long book to you,
and you will be next to enter that other- but so close to us - world.

I passed this large 500pg graphic novel in my bookstore many times before i decided to 'staisfy my curiosity'. So i bought it. Upon opening the cover, I was awestruck at the pages in front of me. The book is simply (in my opinion) one of the finest examples of visual story-telling (in the comicbook sense) that I have ever seen. It's a book I can point to and say, "There, THATS how far you can go with the medium!".

Dave McKean is not one of my favourite writers or artists, but this is one of the best 'books' i have ever held in my hands. The story is interesting, layered & strange. This book is not a 'snack'. It's a big 'meal', that you'll put in the freezer & reheat again to consume over & over. The visuals are not 'text-book' comic style illustrations, but rather 'artistic'. It's stylised. The book is a piece of art. The quality of the book itself (Cover, inside pages & size) - is something you rarely (if ever) see on shelves. This book is not cheap, but once you open the pages, you wouldn't care if you paid twice the price. It's that good.

The often used cliche, "If you only buy one graphic novel a year, make it this one" is perfectly valid for this book.

Okay, well there's lots of things to say about this book. On first glance, Dave McKean's artistic style seems rough and unskilled. But I knew him from the amazing images he put together for the Sandman series. And as I read this book, I saw how behind all the scribbly lines was a clear vision, and the ability to portray emotions and scenes with precision. And yet it's not beautiful. It's scribbly and rough.

His storyboarding is amazing. He can show time and movement and emotion incredibly well. He uses the medium of comics in an expert manner.

The characters are interesting, and the dialogue is very authentic and real. You can sink yourself into any scene and believe it. He paints the characters in terms of their words and emotions as well as he depicts their movement, the passage of time, and the images behind the images. It feels much like Gaiman's work. There's an intimacy of character that draws you in, past any dislike you may have of the artistic style at first.

But what I didnt like, and the reason I gave it a 3, is that there isnt an overall story. McKean hints at a story, and brings in elements with a lot of potential, from the supernatural to gods and conspiracies, but he doesnt go anywhere with them or attempt to explain them or justify their existence in the story. It's as if he read imaginative stories all day long and this was the confusing, odd dream he had afterwards. I kept hoping he'd weave it all together in the end, but he doesnt. It meanders without purpose. The telling is good, but what is it telling? I really dont know. And thus, it is unsatisfying.

I'm like the rest of the reviews in that I too read the book in junior high. I came from a family of alcoholic, drug addicted parents, and was raised by my grandparents. This book has stuck in my memory for almost 2 decades, and now, in my 30's with a 12 year old daughter, I find myself longing to read it again. With my mother deceased and my father in prison, I want my daughter to read it when she's a little older to understand a lot of the feelings I had as a child. This book is amazing and I'm looking forward to owning it!

This fiction book by Charolette Culin is really good. Claire hates her mother because she won't let her go see her father. Claire loved her father, both of them had the same interests, to paint. I liked Claire because she was very determined.

I liked the paragraph on page #179. I liked it because it shows that Claire is very determined and it really shows that she really like to paint, and she really wanted to show that. Cages of Glass, Flowers of Time is a really great book and I am sure anyone would love it.

After reading this book my question is that, does Claire persue her dream in drawing? I really liked this book because it is very interesting.

I'm 26 years old now and I was in middle school when I read this book I moved away from the state I lived in but for some reason that book has haunted me ever since. I've gone everywhere Borders, Books A Million, you name it I've looked for it there and asked if they could order it. No one could ever locate it. Well I've finally found it and I feel like I've been reunited with an old friend! That book made such an influence on me as a young teen, my parents weren't even alcholic's. But now I have a son going on 9 and I will be sure he will read it when he gets alittle older. And any of my friends that love to read. It may be a youth teen book but I'm quite sure it will touch anyone that has a heart. Good luck finding it, but it is well worth the effort! Happy reading!!!

I guess I'm like alot of others in that I first read this book when I was about in the 7th grade...having come from an alcoholic parent....well let's just say this story has never left my mind.....I stuggled through many years of my own addictions and now after being 4 years sober....I still can't seem to get this story very far a way from my mind....my daughter is 12 and I have searched for the book to give to her with no luck yet...but I am far done from trying! Charlotte Culin did a genious job of putting into words the kind of horror that so many young children and teenagers live with, when living with an addicted parent........it's a hard pill to swallow.....but it does it's work once you get it down....

I was in JR. High school in upstate NY, when this book first touched me. And it did touch me so very deeply. I had been removed from my parents' care and placed in a private school mainly for abused girls. This book was like a lifeline to me. In it's pages, I found courage and a willingness to survive even the worst of my inner turmoil. Sadly, when I left the school, I was unable to take the book with me as I had only borrowed it from the school's library. The story, with all the characters, stayed with me in the years and hardships to come. Last year, for my brithday, a friend mailed me a package. When I opened my present, all I could do was cry and say a prayer of thanks that an old friend had been found. After one long night of reading in bed, I came to the last page of the book. As I turned that page to the back cover, I noticed something written, almost hidden by the inside of the spine. I noticed
M. N. 1988. These, of course, are my initials. As it turns out, this book was THE VERY SAME BOOK I had read as a lonely child. As odd as it sounds, I can remember writing my initials in the book fully believing that the book would be mine when I was ready to leave the school. Of course, I simply thought they would let me have it, since I was the only one who wanted to read it so much. Well, I guess that even the universe agreed that this was to be my book, whether the school liked it or not. The book holds a place of honour next to my Bible on my nightstand, and I still read it often. Thanks to Ms. Culin, who showed such a wealth of understanding into a broken girl's dream of becoming something more. I, too, had that dream. I'm now a mother, a social worker, and a happy woman. This will be a hard day for Americans to deal with. Today is our country's anniversary of Ground Zero. God bless the families of the victims. Please, remember, there is hope in the world. There is hapiness, and some of us find it in the most unlikely places. Like a book about a simple girl who only wanted to create art, find love, and finally find some peace. Don't we all?

Having bought TrueSpace2 with no prior knowledge of CGI, and being the world's worst artist, I was skeptical reading previous reviews. However I needn't have been.

The author gently takes the reader through from first principles to advanced modelling in a clear and concise manner, and in such a way that it gives you confidence to try something new.

I can't recommend this book highly enough.

Great book, it also taught TrueSpace in a matter of weeks instread of learning by exprimentation.

I started using TrueSpace back when version 2 was the newest release. I figured I could play around and build some small videos for myself. This book walked me through many of the functions and allowed me to apply what I have learned. Practically from the first page, the author walks your step by step in creating your own object. Now with version 6 available, I wish this author would write an update to keep us all in the know. Even now I still refer back to this book for missing tips and function that I don't use offen enough to remember. If you like to use TrueSpace and really want to develop something not only recognizable, but high-end I suggest you start with this book.

Even though Caligari has recently released trueSpace 4, this book covering version 2 is a must have. The easy to follow and understand print will have you creating breathtaking graphics in no time at all. Caligari's trueSpace is truly outstanding only if you learn to use it properly. This book will do that for you.

This is one of my favorite childhood books, so I was thrilled to share it with my daughter. We have both CDB and CDC now, and she loves them (and thinks it's pretty cool that Steig also wrote Shrek!) Besides the fun of sounding out the phrases and the laughs it provides, I think the books are mentally challenging and verbally stimulating for children of all ages. Educational maybe, but so much fun. Who doesn't love the illustrations?

Having enjoyed Steig's first such book as an adult, we sent a copy to a budding linguist at college. Upon ordering I was delighted to find this second enjoyable book available. Steig has such delightful images and twists of humor that I could not pass it up. Great fun in drawings and puzzling out the meanings.

I have always chuckled at this book, ever since I helped in my children's school library 20 years ago. William Steig has such a clever way of putting letters together and illustrating what he is trying to say. It is interesting to children of all ages.

I ordered this since my sister received it and thought it was a great book. Unfortunately, this copy does not come with the answers. Look for the hard cover version, that has the answers in the back.

CDB! (Stories to Go!)

I was very excited to find this book for my grandbaby. We had great fun with it when her aunts were small. Who would have thought back then that William Stieg invented 'text speak'. I even stumped my youngest daughter with NQ!

This was a very unusual book that held my interest from the start. I liked how easy the descriptive writing made it to visualize the action as I read along. There were unexpected twists and colorful scenes that made it hard to put the book down. Writing in the first person for each character allowed me to have a sense of intimancy with each one. A great read!

Not a story about a dog church but rather how people can find sanctuary in others and how one person can catalyze amazing changes and discoveries for those she encounters.

This debut novel introduces you to Mara, an aura seeing odd ball who is also an artist and a teacher. She ends up in a traditional town where she catalyzes some interesting changes.

A great read, this little book is short and engaging. Perfect for those vacation days or nights spent next to a roaring fire.

This book was a genuine surprise. It covers 4 main characters from their own perspectives but each story is intertwined beautifully with all the others. The old saying "You can't go home again" does not apply here. Home is not always a place and family is not always what you expect. I'm not sure I can offer anymore than what other reviewers have said here so well but I definitely was caught up in this book and certainly looking forward to her other books.

Why did this book fall into my lap when I really needed it? For whatever reason, it did and I enjoyed it throughout a long plane ride. I'd just lost a good friend and a very special dog in the course of a couple of days and this book really lifted my spirits. I thoroughly enjoyed how the author presented the story from several characters' viewpoints. I personally believe that we're all connected on a spiritual level and liked how the author wove in mystical possibilities. Far fetched? Maybe, but fun just the same.

Very well written, wonderful characters, worth every moment.

Meet Mara, Earl, Edith and Daniel--the four narrators of Church of the Dog. This rather unusual format allows author Kaya McLaren to convey the thoughts of each of these characters, giving wonderful depth to each. Mara, the main character, is able to see energy fields around those she meets and also can use her own energy field to heal. Earl is her landlord; Edith is his wife who becomes a friend and mentor to Mara. Daniel is their grandson, emotionally handicapped by the tragic loss of his parents.

Mara is recovering from heartbreak. Her engagement ended when her former fiancé handed her a bill for the gas he used driving her to a hospital emergency room. An art teacher, the young woman believes, "I get to teach young people to look at light and life. I get to encourage them to appreciate themselves, and appreciation is a form of love."

Edith is discontent in her marriage. "I glance at my wedding ring and wonder if it's true, if I really am married...I think I'm just part of his landscape, and he simply accepts and expects my presence. A long time ago his eyes sparkled when he looked at me."

Earl's failing health has him re-evaluating his priorities. "My ranch. It's so strange to think that one day it won't be my ranch. I won't be making the calls...What if this house where I've lived my whole life just falls to the ground? What if the next person undoes everything I spent my life doing?"

Daniel still struggles with the tragic loss of his parents when he was very young. He removes himself from much human contact by working as an Alaskan fisherman, although his grandfather wants him to come home. "Come home to the land of of my losses and failures, to my inadequacies and irrational fears...There is one thing I do like about piloting the ship at night. It's the reason I chose this life. It's the sense of disappearing all over again, disappearing into a night so dark I cannot be seen, in a sea so vast I cannot be found."

Mara is able to sense what Edith, Earl and Daniel need in their lives, and to encourage them. At the same time, she grows and matures. The characters evolve; relationships develop and are explored. They even "travel" and visit one another's dreams--just one more form of communication the author uses in her entertaining story.

This delightful novel was originally released in 2000 and now, according to McLaren, is "a new incarnation." It is at once sad yet hopeful, melancholy yet encouraging. Church of the Dog is a story of redemption and healing, a gentle, mystical treatise on fully embracing life and love, and having the courage to face the future.

Citrix MetaFrame XP: Advanced Technical Design Guide, Second Edition was a decent general read. In depth technical detail seemed to be lacking and was replaced by repetitive best practice lectures. However, I enjoyed the authors side comments and general personality that was interwoven into the reading. Overall the book is informative and well written.

We had 2 other books on Citrix Metaframe but the books didn't give us much detail so we started looking for a better resource. I found this book and recommended it to my Network Adminsitrator. I thought I won't get much from it because I don't work with Citrix everyday but when time permits, I read the book and 70% of the time I got the answers from this book.

Not a book for beginners. This is written for engineers and people who already have a good grasp of the basics of Terminal Servers and Citrix. No "how to" install in this book, but rather how to design, implement, identify and resolve your own problems, with a lot of real-life examples.

The style of the book (way it is written) makes a pleasant change from the usual technical books, as it addresses you like you know what you're talking about. You will come out with a clear understading of the issues you're facing and how to resolve them.

This book is self-published, which makes it all the more remarkable.

The book covers up to Windows 2000 and Mataframe XP FR2. I'm keen to see when the next edition comes out, and hpoefully it will concentrate on Windows 2003 + Metaframe 3.0

I had a real tough time searching the Internet and all other places to get some real stuff on Citrix and my search ended with "this" book by "Brain" Madden.

Citrix will notice a sizeable improvement in their sales if they include this book with their product. Everything is explained clearly with visuals and no filler material.

One of the best Tech Books to hit the market in recent times.

In my opinion, this book is the ONLY interesting published book about Citrix until now. I have read most of the available books about Citrix and Terminal Services and this is the only one I would buy again.

If you are a Citrix Certified Administrator, you will find this book very helpful. Personally speaking, I prefer it to most of the Citrix official documentation.

Take into account that it is a book for people who already has a deep knowledge about Citrix. It is not a guide for begginers. It gives you hints to improve your own Citrix project methodology.

I got this book at the Future Business Leaders of America National Leadership Conference. It's packed with helpful strategies for planning your life so you get where you want to go. Highly Recommended! Marie

This is a great story to encourage teens to reach for their full potential, trust in the adults that love them most, and strive to help others in return. Leadership, teamwork, and self reliance are major themes throughout. Mr. Beede presents a compelling story, good reading for kids older than 12 years. At his motivational presentation he creates an atmosphere of excitement and positve participation from his audience. I have heard the thunderous applause and cheering from transfixed young audiences on several occasions. Only two questions...when will John Beede's next book be published and where can I hear him speak again? E. Manning, teacher

I took a group of middle and high school students to a convention where John was the guest speaker. They LOVED his ideas and what he had to say, and couldn't wait to read the book! I read his book to my students and use his techniques with my classes and student councils. It's a WONDERFUL, no excuses, get-it-done approach to life and is so easy for them to understand and relate to!! I would recommend it to anyone!!!
