This book contained things that I think all parents should know about dealing with kids and thier baggage. I have refered back to this when dealing with situations with my special needs child, if only to know that I am not alone in my struggles.

This book was very helpful. It helped me even though I haven't ever adopted. It helped me understand hurting kids more. I will buy this book! I would like to adopt older kids when I'm married. Besides I have known several foster/adopted kids. It helped me understand them.

My wife and I adopted a 5 and 7 yr old from Russia in Sept 2004. They have been diagnosed as mildly RAD, but RAD nonetheless. RAD is Reactive Attachment Disorder for those of you just beginning a path to adoption of older children. I can say from first-hand experience of the past six months that what Keck has written is true, verified and helpful in many ways. I would highly recommend this as a read while you are CONSIDERING adopting older children, domestic or otherwise. It is best to be prepared and accepting of the conditions that you will likely face before you suddenly realize what's going on with your child(ren). I read this book twice I liked it so much. I found many books minimized the struggle of raising adopted children and focussed too much on only the positive. Although I have not raised any adopted children myself I do plan on it after I finish university. After reading many books I knew it couldn't be as flowery as they put it. Although I am sure no book could truly prepare anyone for the realities of raising childeren it can help you understand where things are comming from. If nothing else I have a greater respect for the adoptive family because of this book!!!

Two years ago, we assumed guardianship of my husband's troubled 12-year old niece. She was my husband's sister's child and came from a "House of Horrors." Every conceivable problem existed. Drug abuse, domestic violence, sick pornography, sibling incest, severe parental neglect, sarcasm, ridicule, brutality and denial. She came from the inner city, to our sheltered, happy home in the suburbs. It was akin to someone moving to a foreign country. Fortunately, I read "Adopting the Hurt Child." The book was a lifesaver. I do not exaggerate. Social workers and incompetent therapists seemed to blame us for her problems, (and we hadn't had her for even a year). The authors said this is common. Adoptive parents take the heat for the original family's neglect. The authors nailed every single issue, or problem, with razor sharp accuracy. Our niece is an actress with attachment issues. She wears masks. She plots, she cannot "be." She was never taught real love or how to be with people. Her presence in our household really shook us to the core. She acted coquettish and manipulative with my husband; snide to me (the mom). I do not see the book as negative, but as candid. Love isn't always enough. Movies may have happy endings, but real life is altogether different. Sometimes, these children do not get better. At least, empowered with the advice of this book, you can seek better therapy treatments, know what kind of therapist to hire, and sniff out the bad ones immediately. Now, two years later, we found an attachment therapist. This terrific therapist cannot be manipulated. She is both tough and compassionate. We made more progress with her -- in three sessions, than our niece did with a sex abuse counselor in a year. Our niece still has many problems, and time will tell. We are hanging in there. And I still reference this book. It's just superb. God bless both the authors.

I liked Alaska's Three Bears beacause it taught me a lot about Alaska's Three Bears. Thanks for coming to Ashley River.

This is another book we read to our students at our summer reading program. They loved it. They thought the drawings were terrific, and especially liked the borders on each page. They enjoyed learning more about bears, and they thought it was a neat twist on the original story of the three bears. I highly recommend this book to any teacher who wants to do a unit on bears - it's a book that successfully merges entertainment and educaational components.

I liked the way she tells how the bears survive and how tall they are.I liked your visit to Ashley River.

We picked this book up in the Anchorage airport gift shop in 2001 on our way to visit our Alaskan relatives in Nome. It is a delightful and very informative book about bears for both adults and children, although the focus is on children.

This is not the traditional Three Bears story. Alaska's Three Bears is about the three kinds of bears one might find in that great state and North America: the grizzly, the polar bear and the black bear. The opening sentence begins, "Once upon a time...", but in an box below the story line on every page is valuable information about bears in general and each of the three species of bear in particular.

The first information paragraph states: "There are three species of bear in North America. Grizzlies used to roam from Ohio to California, now the big brown bears have been driven north onto the last pieces of remote land. Black bear can still be found in forests throughout the U.S. but only in Alaska and Canada can you find all three bears; the grizzly, polar bear and black bear, living in the wilderness we call bear country." Did you know all that?

The book tells how each bear chose the place where he wanted to live. The polar bear liked the cold, snow and ice so he stayed in the far north. The grizzly liked the frolicking river with its salmon, the roots he could dig and animals he could chase. The little black bear finally chose the forest with its bug-filled stumps and places to hide. In the end, no matter how far each roamed, they could always find their way back home.

At the back of the book is a Teacher Resource Guide with suggestions on how to use the book. There's a page of dos and don'ts for traveling about in bear country, and also a lovely page of colorful covers of other titles available from Paws IV published by Seattle's Sasquatch Press.
Published in 1992, this book remains a popular one for youngsters of all ages. Though far from being a youngster, I find myself taking it off the bookshelf from time to time to reread the valuable information it contains and to enjoy the magnificent illustrations by Shelley Gill.

I like this book because it is full of interesting facts about bears.I also like your visit and how they tell you how tall they are. My favorite prat is when the the brown baer went home to his forest.Even thoe he was the smallest.I even found out some new info like Blak bears just eat the heads of the fish because they have to eat a surtin amount of fat.

A year ago I had a 'panic attack'. I could not seem to get past it. My life seemed to have changed over night. Things got really scary. I've been extremely successful in my career and never before had I felt 'stressed' or even thought about anxiety. I feared that my panic attack was a sign of weakness and my life would crumble.
After reading through several books, I was blessed to have come across this one. Most of the other books I read lost me about half way through when they became corny and unrealistic.
This book is easy to follow and takes you step-by-step through explaining to you what's going on and what you can do about it. I can't tell you how much better I feel already. READ IT!!!

I am very familiar with the pain of anxiety, panic attacks, and agoraphobia for I suffered from these maladies for several decades. During those years of suffering I believed that my problems were purely mental and underwent treatment by psychiatrists, psychologists, and hypnotherapists. I took various prescribed medications and read many books such as this, but experienced little relief. And then something wonderful happened: I began taking a daily supplement of chelated magnesium (for a different ailment) and shortly thereafter experienced a significant diminishment of anxiety in addition to cure of the ailment for which I had originally taken the supplemental magnesium. There seemed to be no explanation for why taking supplemental magnesium caused this wonderful loss of anxiety until the publication in 2003 of the important book The Miracle of Magnesium by Dr. Carolyn Dean. Early in her book Dr. Dean reveals that a major cause of anxiety and panic attacks is deficiency of magnesium and that magnesium deficiency is quite common in the U.S. Therefore, I beg all sufferers of anxiety, panic attacks, and agoraphobia -- whatever else you may do -- please purchase and read The Miracle of Magnesium by Dr. Carolyn Dean and please try the magnesium supplementation which she recommends. It may change your life as has changed mine.

I began experiencing discomfort and then panic attacks after some stressful periods in my life several years ago. The panic attacks got so bad that I had trouble going to and being at work, going out for entertainment, and at various other times including when I was at home.

For a while I couldn't figure out what was happening to me. After finally figuring out that I was having panic attacks I bought this book. Following the chapters in the book, it took about four weeks to have complete control over my anxiety. The methods for eliminating the episodes were fantastic and have really saved me in many areas of my life.

I would highly recommend this book. It addresses anxiety as well as OCD and various phobias. It's been several years since I got this book and went through it and I have not had a single panic attack since. While I still do experience everyday stress, and sometimes a lot of it - this book has made me better at recognizing and handling very stressful situations far better than I ever could prior to reading it. I wish I had read this book prior to ever having the panic attacks. It will help you change your perspective and turn stressful events into exciting and enjoyable ones.

I can't say enough good about this book - If you have panic attacks or experience anxiety or even just want to improve your ability to handle pressure, you should _definitely_ buy and read this book!!!

I have had problems with anxiety for a few years, and this is definately the most helpful book I have read. It is easy to read and it gets to the point, which I appreciate.

I found this book to be very helpful. The first few chapters help you to learn the cause and effect of your anxiety/phobia/panic and coping skills to deal with these issues. The further you read the more you learn how to overcome your issues and REGAIN CONTROL OF YOUR LIFE.
I was desperate when I started this program. I thought that I would never live a normal life again, but after reading this book I am. This program really does work. Great read!

very detail description to learn correctly who the God of the Bible is.This book is for some body really interested in seeing more of God.

Pink gives an in depth look at who the Bible says God is. It is extremely Biblically based, with every page having numerous scripture references. It is important to know who the God of the Bible is. Most who profess belief in the God of the Bible think they know who that God is. Yet, if the god we have in our thoughts does not match the God as recorded in the Bible we are in error.

I went through this as a study with a group of women and it greatly influenced my knowledge of God and my prayer life as well. Every new & growing Christian should read this. There are way too many people with an inaccurate or low view of God, and this book biblically provides a very well-rounded description of His character and awesome attributes. There was so much I learned and although it is not a long book, there is a lot to chew on! Knowing God well is a crucial foundation for every Christian.

What a power-packed li'l book--concise, biblical, God-glorifying, no Ph.D. required, yet covering the most important topic in the universe: who God is, and what he is like. I've read tomes that don't present as much as Pink does in 5 pages, which is the average length of each chapter.

I love this short volume. So much has been packed in this 108 pages volume, yet it trumpets volumes. This work by Pink points directly to the Most High God and no other.

I highly recommend this power-pack volume. Five stars and counting!

WOW!!! I JUST CAN'T BELIEVE IT!! I STARTED READING THIS SERIES WHEN I WAS ABOUT TEN... I OWE A COUPLE OFF THEM AND I JUST WISHED I HAD THE WHOLE COLLECTION... I BELIEVE THAT EVERYONE SHOULD READ THESE BOOKS BECAUSE THEY TEACH YOU ABOUT A FRIENDSHIP THAT GROWS THROUGHOUT TIME... AND REMEMBER... BSC RULZ!!!!

I loved the babysitters club and i own every single one. It is creative and fun to read. The baby sitters club are good books for girls 3rd grade and up.

When I was younger, I loved these stories. They're cute little stories about 12 year olds who start a club to Babysit. They meet Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays in Claudia's bedroom. You get to read about the main character of the book's big trouble in the book and you get to read about any other character who gets passed the notebook. These are definitely great books for kids 8 and up.

I began reading these books when I was in 5th grade and remember continuing to read them through Jr. High School. Now, I am 24 years old, pregnant with my first baby (a girl) and have pulled out those books to dust off and pass onto my daughter. These books are light-hearted, fun and still teach a good lesson about friendship, handling jobs, money, etc. I think these are fabulous books and recommend them to all!

I read these books when I was 7 and did not enjoy them very much. They were hard to get out of at the time but I found them extraordinarily boring. I am now 12 and live in Australia. I have the entire series because I got them ordered and they kept coming!They are alright stories but the language is unacceptable!The stories are set for older children but younger children are reading them because the language is so simple!

Reading this book was such a pleasure, it was hard to put it down once I started. Being a person from a "third world country" I could relate very much with a significant portion of the subject matter. The author has so masterfully portrayed her homeland in the book, that reading it is like taking a virtual tour to India. I would therefore recommand this book to anyone who wishes to learn something about India and its culture.

"Because You Are a Girl?" is one of the most fascinating and inspiring books I have ever encountered! I would like to pay a standing ovation to the author for having the courage to open her life for the entire world as she has lived it. Her writing generates exceptionally magnetic effects. After reading the book once, I failed to stay away from it and read it for the second time and enjoyed it as much as I did it for the first time. Highly suggested reading.

Don't just read the vivid descriptions but feel them, see them, hear them, and smell them. This breathtaking book would appeal to all, no matter where you are and who you are!

I found that once I started reading this book, I could not put it down. This truly wonderful story gives great insight into the life of a girl growing up in a magnficant and cruel land where once the feminine ruled but where now male principles dominant the land and women are considered second class citizens at best.
Mrs Sharma uses beautiful poetic language throughout as she also describes her own personal struggles growing up an uncaring family, searching for, and eventually finding peace and safety with her new family and with her new life in America.

I have ample reason to be concerned about my health largely because of four ex-wives and the crazyness currently going on in my house between my bulldog (Colonel) and my current wife's annoying tabby (Bobo!). It doesn't help that I'm a beerswilling carnivore and largely a lazy couchloaf. Also complicating matters is the undeniable fact that my brooding spouse is a horrible cook and routinely serves beef-oriented t.v. dinners or worse (greaseburgers from the local fast food joint).

That's where this handy tome comes in. One of the girls from the bar I've been seeing on the sly has been trying to get me to start incorporating more vegetables in our relationship (in addition to the meat) and suggested several books (not this one) to help me get started. While those books had some value, this book really told me what I needed to know about the nutritional values of various vegetarian diets and how to make up for the nutirtion I would be losing by giving up meat.

It's very informative, well-written, easy to understand, but somewhat short on recipes. As I've mentioned, Bessie isn't a very good cook--even when she has cook-by-numbers recipes (which basically means, even if this book had recipes it wouldn't be of much value to her) and that's too bad. Nevertheless, this is a very informative book and has surprisingly convinced me that it is possible to maintain nutrition while maintaining an all-vegie diet. Unfortunately, the recipes in this book (and those I found in several others) have failed to convince me that any of these vegie diets taste any better than the leaves and grass in my backyard.

As a result, I've scrapped the vegetarian route, started cooking for myself, stopped worrying about my health, and I'm staying away from the girls at the bar.

This is an excellent book. I decided to become vegetarian a few years ago both for health and ethical reasons and this one one of the first books I bought - its remained the one I turn to over and over again - especially when friends or relatives questions how healthy a vegetarian diet is and I need to educate them. Some of the most fascinating parts of this book talk about the history of the current meat-based diet and how the government pushed it and helped market meats of all sorts to get people to buy more (to help farmers out). Also though there is great info on how much protien a person actually needs and where you can get it from - its actually pretty easy to get all the protien you need over the course of a day. Since becoming vegetarian (really almost vegan except for the eggs I get from a lady down the street who really takes wonderful care of her chickens) I've never felt better. My husband has even voluntarily made the switch as well (spurred on by a few episodes of food poisoning at the local sandwich shop). Vegetarian is the way to go and this book will give you ALL the info you need to get rolling and keep others quiet when they criticize. Bon sante and Bon appetit!

This book is an excellent resource for beginning vegetarians who are dealing with a lot of new questions -- will this diet be adequate for me nutritionally? do I need to take supplements? what will I tell mom (hee hee)? This book tries to answer all the big questions, and does so quite admirably. It does have a few recipes at the back, which are not bad, but certainly, this is not a cookbook per se. For those looking for a ton of recipes instead of advice, I'd be more likely to recommend The Essential Vegetarian Cookbook (by Diana Shaw), a wonderful book full of tips, tricks, ingredients, glossaries, and 600 low fat recipes, many of which are adaptations of old favourites. Getting both these books would be an excellent beginning to any new vegetarian's bookshelf.

I thought this book was very thorough, yet easy to follow. Every recipe I've made has been very delicious. I was a vegetarian for 6 years before I became pregnant and began to eat meat for fear I wouldn't get enough protein my babe needed. I wish I had this book then, as the authors lay out precisely what you need for nourishment. My son and I now have a great reference so we can be healthy lacto-ovo vegetarians, and possibly convert my husband as well!

Easy to read and a good book to use as a jump-off point for more specific readings catering to your individual vegetarian interests.

This is possibly the most beautifully rendered graphic novel (if something of these dimensions can be called a novel) ever. Dave McKean is best known for doing the cover art for all 75 issues of Neil Gaiman's landmark Sandman comics series, and as the director of the independent film Mirrormask. Not all of his fans may know about McKean's solo comics work. Cages, his magnum opus, was originally released in 10 issues, over a period of 6 years, dogged by publishing difficulties and McKean's busy schedule. It was worth the wait, for within it McKean shows himself to be an extraordinary storyteller in his own right, as well as being a wonderful draughtsman and illustrator.

Worth every penny of the fifty bucks.

I read this book a couple of years ago, and reread it a few weeks ago. I have never come across a story like this, in particular a story TOLD like this. With an incredibly impressive array of visual/narrative techniques, McKean presents an allegory (if that's what it is; the book can be ambiguous concerning certain developments) of creativity as well as despair, abandonment, frustration, and above all, the realization that things are actually pretty wonderful, if we can manage to alter our perspectives.
This is one of the crowning achievements of the graphic medium, and a landmark in literature.

I've bought this graphic novel 3 years ago.
I've just read it in past 4 days.
Why?
I don't know.
Maybe I was afraid of it, maybe I wasn't ready for it yet.
I didn't know what to expect from that pages, that cages...
When I finished it today I was just... it's hard to explain the combination of feelings in my head and soul.
As a painter, graphic novel artist and comic strip teacher, I use to search for a new worlds, to find some new stories to tell to my friends and people that surrounds me.
And I'm aware of numerous traps that lurking behind every corner of creation.
I use to tell my students: Be creative, free your mind and fly through the limitless fields of mind, through the many rooms and hidden windows.
And than again, I find myself captured in some sort of cage.
But the love always sets me free.
Dave McKean is one of my few favorite artists.
A genius that combines techniques, always searching for some new expression.
In this complex and moving book, you can find him using sometimes scratchy ink outlines an rapid brush movenents, everything black and white, (with some blue and greenish tone).
Also a few in colour painted panels, an photomontages.
The storyline is good, sometimes monotone but filled with phylosophy about God, art, creation, love, meanings of existence...
I think that I'm going to read it few more times... There's something left, hidden between those dark walls, and spattered lines.
But all I can do is recommend this amazing 500 pgs long book to you,
and you will be next to enter that other- but so close to us - world.

I passed this large 500pg graphic novel in my bookstore many times before i decided to 'staisfy my curiosity'. So i bought it. Upon opening the cover, I was awestruck at the pages in front of me. The book is simply (in my opinion) one of the finest examples of visual story-telling (in the comicbook sense) that I have ever seen. It's a book I can point to and say, "There, THATS how far you can go with the medium!".

Dave McKean is not one of my favourite writers or artists, but this is one of the best 'books' i have ever held in my hands. The story is interesting, layered & strange. This book is not a 'snack'. It's a big 'meal', that you'll put in the freezer & reheat again to consume over & over. The visuals are not 'text-book' comic style illustrations, but rather 'artistic'. It's stylised. The book is a piece of art. The quality of the book itself (Cover, inside pages & size) - is something you rarely (if ever) see on shelves. This book is not cheap, but once you open the pages, you wouldn't care if you paid twice the price. It's that good.

The often used cliche, "If you only buy one graphic novel a year, make it this one" is perfectly valid for this book.

Okay, well there's lots of things to say about this book. On first glance, Dave McKean's artistic style seems rough and unskilled. But I knew him from the amazing images he put together for the Sandman series. And as I read this book, I saw how behind all the scribbly lines was a clear vision, and the ability to portray emotions and scenes with precision. And yet it's not beautiful. It's scribbly and rough.

His storyboarding is amazing. He can show time and movement and emotion incredibly well. He uses the medium of comics in an expert manner.

The characters are interesting, and the dialogue is very authentic and real. You can sink yourself into any scene and believe it. He paints the characters in terms of their words and emotions as well as he depicts their movement, the passage of time, and the images behind the images. It feels much like Gaiman's work. There's an intimacy of character that draws you in, past any dislike you may have of the artistic style at first.

But what I didnt like, and the reason I gave it a 3, is that there isnt an overall story. McKean hints at a story, and brings in elements with a lot of potential, from the supernatural to gods and conspiracies, but he doesnt go anywhere with them or attempt to explain them or justify their existence in the story. It's as if he read imaginative stories all day long and this was the confusing, odd dream he had afterwards. I kept hoping he'd weave it all together in the end, but he doesnt. It meanders without purpose. The telling is good, but what is it telling? I really dont know. And thus, it is unsatisfying.

I'm like the rest of the reviews in that I too read the book in junior high. I came from a family of alcoholic, drug addicted parents, and was raised by my grandparents. This book has stuck in my memory for almost 2 decades, and now, in my 30's with a 12 year old daughter, I find myself longing to read it again. With my mother deceased and my father in prison, I want my daughter to read it when she's a little older to understand a lot of the feelings I had as a child. This book is amazing and I'm looking forward to owning it!

This fiction book by Charolette Culin is really good. Claire hates her mother because she won't let her go see her father. Claire loved her father, both of them had the same interests, to paint. I liked Claire because she was very determined.

I liked the paragraph on page #179. I liked it because it shows that Claire is very determined and it really shows that she really like to paint, and she really wanted to show that. Cages of Glass, Flowers of Time is a really great book and I am sure anyone would love it.

After reading this book my question is that, does Claire persue her dream in drawing? I really liked this book because it is very interesting.

I'm 26 years old now and I was in middle school when I read this book I moved away from the state I lived in but for some reason that book has haunted me ever since. I've gone everywhere Borders, Books A Million, you name it I've looked for it there and asked if they could order it. No one could ever locate it. Well I've finally found it and I feel like I've been reunited with an old friend! That book made such an influence on me as a young teen, my parents weren't even alcholic's. But now I have a son going on 9 and I will be sure he will read it when he gets alittle older. And any of my friends that love to read. It may be a youth teen book but I'm quite sure it will touch anyone that has a heart. Good luck finding it, but it is well worth the effort! Happy reading!!!

I guess I'm like alot of others in that I first read this book when I was about in the 7th grade...having come from an alcoholic parent....well let's just say this story has never left my mind.....I stuggled through many years of my own addictions and now after being 4 years sober....I still can't seem to get this story very far a way from my mind....my daughter is 12 and I have searched for the book to give to her with no luck yet...but I am far done from trying! Charlotte Culin did a genious job of putting into words the kind of horror that so many young children and teenagers live with, when living with an addicted parent........it's a hard pill to swallow.....but it does it's work once you get it down....

I was in JR. High school in upstate NY, when this book first touched me. And it did touch me so very deeply. I had been removed from my parents' care and placed in a private school mainly for abused girls. This book was like a lifeline to me. In it's pages, I found courage and a willingness to survive even the worst of my inner turmoil. Sadly, when I left the school, I was unable to take the book with me as I had only borrowed it from the school's library. The story, with all the characters, stayed with me in the years and hardships to come. Last year, for my brithday, a friend mailed me a package. When I opened my present, all I could do was cry and say a prayer of thanks that an old friend had been found. After one long night of reading in bed, I came to the last page of the book. As I turned that page to the back cover, I noticed something written, almost hidden by the inside of the spine. I noticed
M. N. 1988. These, of course, are my initials. As it turns out, this book was THE VERY SAME BOOK I had read as a lonely child. As odd as it sounds, I can remember writing my initials in the book fully believing that the book would be mine when I was ready to leave the school. Of course, I simply thought they would let me have it, since I was the only one who wanted to read it so much. Well, I guess that even the universe agreed that this was to be my book, whether the school liked it or not. The book holds a place of honour next to my Bible on my nightstand, and I still read it often. Thanks to Ms. Culin, who showed such a wealth of understanding into a broken girl's dream of becoming something more. I, too, had that dream. I'm now a mother, a social worker, and a happy woman. This will be a hard day for Americans to deal with. Today is our country's anniversary of Ground Zero. God bless the families of the victims. Please, remember, there is hope in the world. There is hapiness, and some of us find it in the most unlikely places. Like a book about a simple girl who only wanted to create art, find love, and finally find some peace. Don't we all?

Having bought TrueSpace2 with no prior knowledge of CGI, and being the world's worst artist, I was skeptical reading previous reviews. However I needn't have been.

The author gently takes the reader through from first principles to advanced modelling in a clear and concise manner, and in such a way that it gives you confidence to try something new.

I can't recommend this book highly enough.

Great book, it also taught TrueSpace in a matter of weeks instread of learning by exprimentation.

I started using TrueSpace back when version 2 was the newest release. I figured I could play around and build some small videos for myself. This book walked me through many of the functions and allowed me to apply what I have learned. Practically from the first page, the author walks your step by step in creating your own object. Now with version 6 available, I wish this author would write an update to keep us all in the know. Even now I still refer back to this book for missing tips and function that I don't use offen enough to remember.
