Good overview of Web Design RootsReview Date: 2005-09-21
People who are interested in where the web is coming from will like this book. If your are looking for how web design is done today anno 2005 I would like to recommend Jeffrey Zeldman book "Designing with web standards".
Helpful Guidance for Newbies or VeteransReview Date: 2004-10-05
Jefferey Zeldman teaches basic, foundation building principles that you will use almost daily during your tenure as a web designer. If your looking for a book to hold you by the hand and teach you how to perform specific actions with step by step coding, this isn't your book. Instead, it touches upon ideas and methods. Zeldman covers topics from designing good navigation to fundamental steps in working with a potential client.
I gave this book 4 out of 5 stars. It would have received a perfect score if it wasn't for some outdated material. Purchase this book, it should be a part of any collection.
Most excellentReview Date: 2002-12-08
Jeffrey Zeldman's unique voice permeates the entire book, holds your hand, and gently guides you through the ups & downs of working with the web. His examples are concise and to the point, his writing style (as always) humorous and friendly, and, most importantly, you get the feeling that he truly loves this medium, and would like nothing more than being able to help another person discover just what the fuss is all about.
Should be on the shelf of every designer - no matter what your level of experience is.

The Last Panther Not Only Speaks, He Also Writes!Review Date: 2008-08-12
From the desire to retain a child's innocence in Rainbows:
I hope to always retain
That kind of a heart
I want to always be
The one adult standing
With the children
Looking at the fishes in the aquarium
With wonder
To the challenge to "woman up" in Partway:
Boundaries have been drawn
Limits have been set
And where as I want to reach for the sky
You are afraid to have your feet
Leave the ground
Your chance to hear the last panther speak is a solid delight.
Excellent Read!Review Date: 2008-10-13
He moves along to Song Lyrics and again the depths of his spirit shine and you can't help but wonder what melody would fill the air as these are being sung. My favorite, Plastic People. I couldn't help but shake my head and agree, how true.
Following we have Quotes, but my favorite of all the topics was definitely the Short Stories. Within this section I lost myself to the read.
"Her Daddy," truly touched my heart and I so enjoyed the weaving of God, Angels, and the importance they hold that whispered between the lines of this author's work.
Definitely a fresh, different read, sort of like a smorgasbord of writing that gives the reader a sample of the finest morsals, and tickles their taste-buds with delight. Well done.

Writing from the Heart and a Bruised PsycheReview Date: 2008-10-05
Von has survived combat in the Middle East, has suffered from post traumatic stress syndrome he so capably describes in his closing 'Story in Four Parts', has witnessed the plague of AIDS ('Wrap That'), has observed still existing disparities of class in this country of 'equality' ('The Bum'), the beauty and the pain and the durability and fragility of relationships ('Safe', for example), our priorities ('Yard Sale'), and other miracles and tragedies that have formed his life. The difference that makes Chase Von so much more poignant than most is his simple, honest, street talk manner of speaking to the reader. He manages to keep our attention throughout the long series of entires in this hefty volume and makes us eager to hear more.
For this reader the short stories are the finest of the three sections of the book (Part I Poems, Part II Song Lyrics, Part III Short Stories). In others' hands placing the short stories on the page in a manner resembling poems (no side justification, spacing irregular between lines, no paragraphs, etc.) might appear contrived, but in Chase Von's control the thought and spoken lines flutter like overheard conversations in another room and add a sense of mystery and artistic distance for the reader to absorb the impact.
The full title of this solid book is YOUR CHANCE TO HEAR THE LAST PANTHER SPEAK and we can only hope this is the first of many volumes of stories and shared from a man raw with emotion and tempered with making reality fit a poet's view. Welcome to the theater of the world, Chase Von! Highly recommended. Grady Harp, October 08
The Panther Speaks Through Powerful Pen!Review Date: 2008-09-22
I love short stories so much, I practically devour them, so I bought this book because I had heard that Von's short stories stir the emotions. They were all entertaining and well-written, many resounding with heart-wrenching images of everyday life. And the power of his quotes, lyrics and poetry was an unexpected literary bonus.
A busy man, he also interviews rising stars in various artistic fields--from actors to authors to artists--for the popular Student Operated Press.
Author Chase Von speaks with a positive, inspiring new literary voice. And what a voice! I recommend you experience the pleasure for yourself.

Good book but...Review Date: 2007-07-10
I didn't like how Lauren eluded Nick for the entire book, even up to the last few pages. She seemed a bit too pretentous and untouchable. I thought she loved him?
Otherwise, I loved Nick and empathized with his pain. I had hoped Lauren would have been more of a likeable character.

If you're a Danielle Steele fan, but like me, think her stuff is a bit too syrupy sometimes, then this is for you. Jackie Collins pulls no punches in this one, just shooting straight from the hip and telling it like it is. Its a GREAT book, buy it for your collection and you WONT be sorry!

Easy Read, Easily Worth the Time & Money You'll Spend On ItReview Date: 2006-12-06
In this book, Yeh successfully marries Eastern life philosophy with Western business philosophy. One of Yeh's inspirations in writing this book was Sun Tzu's "The Art of War", an immensely influential ancient Chinese book on military strategy. Early on in his career, Yeh said he noticed that many top Japanese executives read "The Art of War." Yeh's other inspiration in writing this book was his frustration with the cold, systematic approaches outlined in so many popular management books. By blending these two cultures, Yeh is able to apply the Eastern ideas of balance and organic wholeness with Western business management ideas.
In the prologue, Yeh states: "Although many books attempt to translate Sun Tzu's wisdom into systematic guidelines for business, the wisdom of this ancient teacher actually needs to be experienced rather than simply analyzed. To offer you, the reader, that experience, I have chosen to present Sun Tzu's teachings in story format. These stories describe how the best companies in the world have put Sun Tzu's strategies to work, allowing you to follow in the footsteps of giants...". And that's exactly what Yeh delivers in "The Art of Business: In The Footsteps Of Giants".
Yeh divides the book into five sections: The Art of Possibility; The Art of Timing; The Art of Leverage; The Art of Mastery; and The Art of Leadership. At the beginning of each of the major sections, Yeh spends some time laying out his ideas of the topic and their relationship to both Eastern and Western ideals. Then he tells three different stories about three different organizations (or in the case of The Art of Leadership, people) that all relate to the topic at hand. The stories aren't prescriptive; they're illustrative, giving great examples of his ideas in action. The stories are easy reads, like reading a good novel instead of a `here's what's good for you, do this, do that' run-of-the-mill management book.
As someone that has read many business and management books, some chosen for me and many chosen by me, I would rate this book in the top-tier, primarily because of its simple, eloquent way of bringing balance to business. It's worth the time and money you'll invest in it, and worth keeping in your library to re-read in the future.

Leadership is an "art" and this book teaches you how to become the artist! Many great stories and examples are included in each chapter.
Walk Outside the Corporate BoxReview Date: 2005-07-25
Perhaps the most dramatic jump I was able to make was at the example of Singapore. From the books example Singapore's only natural resource was its uneducated and untrained population. I was able to implement the Singapore model by evaluating my workers ability to receive and implement education and advanced training. The resulting workforce became an in-house force of loyal employees.
Personally I can only recommend this book to those who can think outside the corporate box. If that happens to be who you are get a copy and don't follow the examples to the letter. Allow your business to flow through the examples till you find one that works.

What a great bookReview Date: 2008-04-21
This is an intensely character driven story with the fall of Germany and the Nazi party as the backdrop. While Heywood bends a few historical facts to make his story work, there is sufficient accuracy to occasionally convince you that you're reading a work of non-fiction. Heywood does a masterful job of creating characters you can identify with and understand, even sympathize with. No small feat when you're reading about Nazis.
This is a book that begs to be brought to the small screen as a mini-series.

Intense Suspence.....Heywood Rocks!Review Date: 2005-06-09
The SS Men were men to be admired for their bravery and craftiness. Sometimes I almost wanted them to succeed as I trekked with them across the countryside of southern Europe with their Fuehrer. But then the Russian team, made up of a few men and one woman, were people I came to know really well and identified with. I followed their every step in their search for the monster of Berlin.
I really hated Joseph Stalin, especially when he kept threatening the most capable team in all Russia with death if they didn't bring Hitler to him alive. Stalin was a real slime in my view. Moreover I knew that he was genuinely wicked even more than Hitler was. But eventually he did reward the team generously for their work.
Intense suspense and action. A great read.

Although I realize it is not absolutely the truth, it gave me such a peace about death and the hereafter, I passed the book on to another.
At one time I bought 24 of them to pass around. Not one came back to me.
Isn't that wonderful!
Now I am doing the same thing with 'My Dream of Heaven'.
I wish everyone would/could read it.

I first read this book when my sister and then my father died in the same year. It was a tremendous source of comfort, and made the vast expanse between us seem so much smaller.
I highly recommend it.

If you're a graphic designer who is entering web development (which is a large segment), it's still a must read, but beware the 4.x browser version suggestions, and don't bother to try and support tables any more. It's not necessary, and it's bad form for oh, so many reasons. Everything else in the book is absolutely essential for the transition. Your best bet would be to read it and ask questions from someone who's been developing websites for a long time (and is open to web standards).
And if you've been building these things for a long time, it's still a great book to revisit at least yearly.
You can't really go wrong with a Zeldman book, imho, at least so far. If he writes something on knitting, I can't guarantee it...
