ive been a packer fan since the lombardi era, but only vaguely knew the pre-50s history of this franchise and players, this is a well researched and informative history of the earlier years . there are lots of pics and sidebars highlighting the packers own hall nof fame greats, as well as how the fans and citizens of green bay have stuck by this team through many trials and financial hardships . in the fight for survival,( that is the money generated to keep a pro franchise in town), this book exposes the great character and love of a city and its inhabitants to support above and beyond the call of duty, the glory as well as the lean times , my love for this, the last of the small town teams from the beginnings of the nfl has renewed my passion and makes me want to move to green bay to live the dream, unique among the nfl and at the top!!!!!!!!!

My 88-year-old father grew up in Wisconsin. He's a lifelong Packer fan. I haven't seen or read the book, but he's absolutely enthralled by it. We talk frequently, and he brings the book up often. Every page has a memory for him.

So, don't take my word for it: take the word of a man who watched Don Hutson catch passes on blustery Green Bay Sundays.

I had 11 concussions playing football in the 1960's. My last two happened when I was playing for the NY Jets Taxi Squad. They ended my career. "Head Games - Football's Concussion Crisis" has given information
and understanding that I had not known in 40 years. I think every parent should have knowledge about head injuries no matter what sport their children play. "Head Games - Football's Concussion Crisis" is a great way to start.

This is a fantastic book and a must read for parents, athletic trainers, coaches, and anyone else interested in seeing a summary of the current research on concussions. Nowinski breaks down the complex science into layman's terms and uses LOTS of stories and personal accounts to really drive home the importance of his message without ever taking an alarmist tone. As an athletic trainer, I would highly recommend this book to anyone remotely involved in sports, especially collision sports like football and wrestling.

As a physician and athlete, I was surprised at how much I didn't know about head injuries! Not only is this book an excellent layman's guide, it is a well-researched and even-handed review of the emerging data on post-concussion disability. Nowinksi has a personal writing style and uses his own experience for credibility and context. He is to be commended!

This book is so good it's scary it teaches stuff from poses to move ment step by step so you can get it really easyly. At first I was terrible at drawing movement so every piture I drew was a charater standing but then I got this book at the libray. And now I know how to draw people jumping running and much more. Very helpful and useful it should have ten stars. Cool as it gets the person who made this book worked for Studio Ghibli!

I must say, I really enjoyed this book. I love how the book displays the body in different views and in different positions. This is especially useful when you can't draw a character from a certain sitting position. For those who are a little concerned about nudity, don't worry. There is some nudity, but it's mostly the guys. I really wouldn't call it nudity though, since they do not draw the nipples on the females at all. It's merely a silhouette of the naked form. Other than that, this book is a must have. It really shows daily activities (like the book suggests)it also has some activities like karaoke. I wouldn't call that a daily activity, but that pose can come in handy if one wishes to draw a karaoke scene in their manga.

Ozawa does a wonderful job again! He inititally starts the book on drawing your character using perspective giving a numerous amount of pointers and examples. Then giving basic action poses (walking, running, sitting, standing, laying down, etc) and going into variations of those actions by using multiple examples of characters. A typical example page consists of a stick figure in a particular pose, a block figure, and the actual finished character in the same pose. Front and back, or other view of the pose is common and he even gives pointers and tips of details to look out for.

Besides teaching you how to draw real believable characters, this book is an excellent edition that you may later use as a reference book for poses. Like his earlier books, Ozawa covers nudity tastefully and this book can be used by young artists without fear. A book well worth the money, imo.

Another excellent book

The third book in the series picks up right after the last with perspective. The first chapter is dedicated to it, and provides many great tips. It then moves on to basic character movements such as walking, running, sitting, sleeping, and much more. From there it even goes into greater detail by showing you variations of the previously mentioned movements, and a lot of them. After all, no two people are made the same. This is a great book for any artist period who wants to learn the different poses of the body.

My 17 month old daughter with Down syndrome adores this book. She enjoys answering every page when it asks "can you?" She gets very excited by the pictures of the babies/toddlers and frequently kisses the pages. I believe that some day we will use this book that she is so attached to begin talking to her about Down syndrome.

We love it so much we bought ten copies and donated them to the local NICU where my daughter stayed and the social worker is giving them to babies who are born there with Down syndrome.

I am writing this review because as a prior Early Childhood Special Educator to children birth-3, it was very hard to find board books that had children with different needs and races. I think that this is a wonderful book for both children and parents. It shows children doing the typical things that happen in their daily routines. I really enjoyed that the pictures were really children in real situations. The book was colorful and fun to read. I would recommend that daycares and preschools add this book to their libraries for all children to enjoy.

What I especially liked about this paperdoll book compared to others that I have is that there is information about the show's wardrobe and how Lucy's look evolved during the run of the show. There are also lots of pictures showing Lucy wearing the outfits in different episodes of the show and that adds to it. I wouldn't buy this to cut up and actually use for the paperdolls because it should be saved. Ever since I got this book I look for the outfits when I watch the reruns on TV Land on the weekends.

Second, it's amazing to FINALLY see these outfits in color after only seeing them in black and white since what seems like the dawn of time. And the book keeps it all fun and lively! I highly recommend it - and the price is right. Buy two - one to keep and the other to cut up and play with.

All around, yet another hit from the Missing Manual series!

I'm well versed in most things computer, so computer books often either are way under my interest level or are very technical in nature. This is a great mix of advanced techniques taught in a quick and understandable way.

I'm actually using iLife '06, but haven't hit any major roadbumps between the content in the book and the '06 apps.

Great stuff - now I'm drooling over the iPhoto specific book - I want to dig even deeper into that app now that I understand the basics!

Can't miss with anything in this series...

iLife '05 is the fifth Missing Manual I've purchased. I find them helpful, informative, and fun to read. The chapter layout is logical and fluid, the index is thorough, and the entire manual is chock full of color (!) illustrations.

The first few chapters will walk the beginner through iTunes and the iTunes Music store. There is even a chapter on managing your iPod.

Next is iPhoto, Apple's image browser-librarian-editor. Like Apple's software, there is more than first meets the eye in these pages.

Section three covers iMovie, from working with your camcorder through producing something worth burning to DVD...leading seamlessly to

Section four, exploring iDVD. Both general concepts and insider-like tips abound.

Section five covers GarageBand. All the above sections are much more accessable and thorough than Apple's Help system. This Missing Manual closes with more than 50 pages of troubleshooting tips for the 5 software titles, and an excellent index.

The whole book is a pleasure to read, browse, or just to hold in the hand (though it's heavy--nothing skimpy about it). I find myself reading some sections completely and diving in for a just a few pages in others. A must have if you own iLife '05--whhich can be had for a song now that iLife '06 is out.

Do you need to harness cutting-edge technology for your own creative expression and entertainment? If you do, you're in luck! Author David Pogue, has done an outstanding job of writing a book that doesn't require you to be a professional working for a media conglomerate to read it.

Pogue, begins by discussing how to use iTunes 4 for managing, playing, buying and sharing digital music. Then, he discusses how to use the iPhoto 5 program for downloading photos from your digital camera, and organizing, sharing, and printing them. The author continues by describing how to use the iMoves HD program for editing footage from a digital camcorder, adding effects, sound, and credits, and then presenting the result. Next, he details how to use GarageBand 2 for composing and recording terrific-sounding songs of your own. Then, the author provides an overview of how to use the iDVD 5 program for burning DVDs containing the movies, music, and photos from iTunes, iPhotos, iMoves, and GarageBand. Finally, he explains how to troubleshoot the preceding programs.

This most excellent book packages iDVD 5, iTunes, iPhotos, iMoves, and GarageBand come in a single package called iLife '05. In other words, if you've mastered all of the preceding information, you have all of the technical background you need to enjoy iLife '05: The Missing Manual.

This is a good book for understanding all of the applications included in iLife 05. Note, however, that iLife 06 has been released with a host of new features, and thus depending on whether or not you intend to upgrade, this book may have a limited lifespan of usefulness at this point in time. As of iLife '06, iLife consists of six components: iTunes, iPhoto, iMovie, iDVD, GarageBand, and iWeb. However, if you intend to stick with iLife 05 for awhile, you couldn't ask for a better guide. Basically, what the author has done is condense his Mac missing manual series of books- iMovie&DVD, iPhoto, iTunes&iPod, and GarageBand - into one volume. I have some of the missing manuals for the individual applications, and I compared the individual books with the applicable sections in this book, and they seem to be equitable in quality. The only thing you are really missing is some of Pogue's insight into using the applications - for example, some pointers on film-making in the case of the iMovie&iDVD book versus this book. There also seem to be more advanced user and customization information in the individual "Missing Manual" books versus this book, so perhaps power-users would be better off buying the individual missing manuals on the applications. I notice that Amazon does not show the table of contents, so I do that here for the purpose of completeness:

I bought this hoping that it would teach me how to create a short film. The story I already have, it's just the skills and schedule that I need. This book gave me a GENERAL IDEA but it wasn't specific enough. It would say, "then use your compositing softare to put the renders together." Ummm... How?
I know it wasn't meant to be a complete-all-included-only-this-needed kind of book, but even so...
I would say that unless you are a true beginner to this field, look for something else, but if you are a true beginner, it is excellent. It taught me alot and I am very VERY glad I bought this book.

Also, after the poster has been presented, I have every student write a friendly letter to the Star Student. All letters are made into a booklet that the Star Student receives at the end of their week.

Gambit publisher and the team of Nunn and Burgess (since the Mammoth Book of Greatest Chess Games) have created the standard for all chess-books. Each game has a short introduction, then the game itself with deep and broad variations, many diagrams and ended with a short summary.
The author uses the games that feature in his Czech magazine column, "Game of the Month." In the magazine, due to the space and time limitations, the games are brief and dense. To write this book, he picked many of those old games and a few new ones. The games are from the period 1993-2000. Every year, there are hundreds of GM and master games. To pick the good ones to include and analyze in a book is not an easy task. The selection depends of the author's taste. GM games are almost always good. It's just how the author presents them and adds his/her analysis and comments. That's where the book sells. Here, Stohl uses some of his old analyses, runs more through chess programs, adds more comments. He also uses other commentators' analyses, and surprisingly his chess column readers. This reminds me some chess opening books mention that many opening move novelties have been discovered by chess amateurs. While on this opening subject, I just have one small question. After the author (not only on this book but in general) has picked a game to annotate, if the opening or defense is not in his specialty, how would s/he explain the fine points?
Anyway, the author presents the games professionally, met the Gambit standard. There are deep and many variations. They are way over my level. I could only follow the main line and short variations with lots of explanations. That means the book is still useful to me for many years to come.

A great, modern {chess} masterpiece.

I first studied this book with a student of mine just after it was published. He purchased it, we would go over a game or two every lesson or so. Then last November, (2003); I purchased my own copy of this book. I can safely say that I have had this book long enough, and also spent enough time studying it - to do a reasonably intelligent review. (I have also chatted with many friends and students who have purchased this book, as well as having received about 10-20 e-mails as concerning this volume.)

First of all, the book is from "Gambit" Books ... suffice it to say that they have many fine chess books in their line and know exactly how to do a good job publishing a chess book. (Paper, binding, editing, etc.)

Secondly, this comes from a reasonably strong GM ... who is also a chess teacher and an author.

Thirdly, we have the collection. 50 games of recent vintage - no dinosaurs in here. The games are extremely well annotated; sometimes there is a comment after every move during the key part of a game. The emphasis here is on the opening and on tactics, but no phase of the game is neglected. The work here is VERY detailed, as a USCF Master, I found it both entertaining and challenging.

I gladly give this book five stars, even though I had said in the past I would not do this anymore.

There are some slight drawbacks to the book. I would not call them flaws, but I feel it my responsibility to point out a few possible stumbling blocks to a potential buyer.
1. The book is best tackled by someone who is at least 1400-to-1500 in rating. I am quite sure a rank beginner would find this book much too complex and difficult to grasp. (The author could still learn a turn or two from the great Irving Chernev!)
2. I found a few tactical flaws, but to be honest, it took hours and hours to find them using Fritz 8.0. I doubt that even a good 1800 player would notice these if they were not using a very strong chess program.
3. I personally found a few of the variants hard to follow. I also had difficulty assessing a few of the positions. I am sure that the average player would feel the same way, perhaps even a little lost. This could have been resolved by ending each variation with a symbol that stands for which side stands better - and perhaps a brief note explaining why.

And while this might be a very tough and seemingly dense book, I would issue the following challenge. Buy this book, go over all the games and study it in depth. (Take at least a month.) Then every time you go up about 100 points review this book. I am willing to bet this is a book that you would continue to benefit from until your rating has surpassed the authors. (I looked up GM Igor Stohl's rating - ID # 14900025 on the FIDE website ... he is currently rated 2561.)

The main drawback is that Stohl gives loads of theoretical variations and explains few of them. For example, he'll give the game's move and then show you 2 paragraphs of side-variations that are inferior......but seldom explains why one side is better (you have to be able to figure that out and then know whether you're reasons are correct).

Another drawback: he doesn't explain why a game is a masterpiece. Sure, all the theory and variations he gives are instructive, but what makes these games "masterpieces"? Do they possess some specific quality that warrants the title of Masterpiece? Hard to know, because he doesn't say. (But let's forgive Stohl if the book's title was chosen by the publisher and not by him.)

The book's strong point is the depth and breath of technical analysis. If you want to improve by following a game, analyzing moves, and checking your analysis, this is a terrific book. But be prepared to really apply yourself, because this is strong GM calculating. Be willing to work hard, or you could be wasting money getting this book.

This book is best-suited for players over 2000. Players rated 1600-2000 can use Stohl's book but will understand less of it and won't benefit as much. These players would get more out of books like The World's Greatest Chess Games by Nunn, Emms, and Burgess...much is explained descriptively, making it more fun to read and learn from, but you also get plenty of variations.

I give it 4 stars because it does a very good job and it's a well-written book for it's best audience (Expert and up). Myself, I play at 1700-1800.

Stohl deeply annotates 50 games between the world's best players. I was inspired almost as much by Stohl's analysis as I was by the games themselves. There isn't a one-sided massacre in the book. Not one game where a Super-GM plays like God and a garden-variety GM or IM sleepwalks all the way. Even the games that look like they're going to be blow-outs have nice comebacks by the eventual losers. Usually the outcome is in doubt until very near the end.

I don't think this book would be very interesting to anyone rated below about USCF 1700-1800; it's that deep. I've been close to 2200 and I wish I could play as well as the LOSERS played in this book.

Another reviewer thought Stohl let Fritz do all the analysis for him. I'm afraid not. Stohl misses too many things! He even overlooks some winning lines that Fritz and Shredder find instantly and gives inconsequential lines instead. I'm not sure to what extent he used computer assistance; definitely not as much as I do when I annotate a game.

What a fun and delightful read! I was surprised how down-to-earth, witty and entertaining this book was. From hearing about Chandler's background, being a high-powered financial executive and former Senior Vice President of the pretigious securities firm Sutro & Company--I thought maybe this book would be technical, complex and full of financial jargon. But it was the opposite. Linda broke down financial principles into everyday examples we can all relate to. I'm giving this book to all my women friends and my daughter. --Project Manager of major U.S. software firm, Atlanta.

In my opinion, IT'S JUST A KISS AWAY: A WOMAN'S GUIDE TO WINNING THE MONEY GAME written by Linda Chandler is the most delightful personal finance book I have ever read. I loved the chapter "SHOP 'TIL YOU DROP" . . . cuz I saw so much of me in those lines. Linda has a way of making a very serious subject fun, while she educates you on a new approach that is practical and really works! I have given this book to my daughters, my granddaughters, and many of my lady friends.
