One reference for Access and VBA that you should have!

I have a number of programmers reference manuals and this one is used the most when working with Access. It is NOT for beginners. It is for the seasoned Access programmer or Visual Basic programmer. Many of the examples and tips could be used in either environment. The examples and samples are simple and straight forward, Michael Groh does not have anything to prove, he is a seasoned professional and his teaching style will have you feeling that you 'already knew that.'

A book so good that it is out of stock!

I have quite a few books of this kind, some I have attempted to read, others which I have only been brave enough to flick through. A colleague lent me his copy of power toolkit and I must admit, I am hooked. With few exceptions, it is written in very plain english (as opposed to techie speak) with clear examples. I came to this site as I want my own copy!

A Painless Way to Get Started
Helpful Votes: 11 out of 12 total.
Review Date: 2007-02-18
Microsoft Access is easily the most popular database on the planet. Why? Because it's a part of the Microsoft Office Suite of products. It's not all that strong a database, but it's powerful enough for databases up to 50 megabytes and a few thousand hits a day. And that fits the vast majority of the applications people have in their day to day work.

This book is a show and tell book. That is it has lots and lots of screen shots that show what your screen should look like as it tells you what's being done. This is a great way to handle a tutorial type book. As you go through the book, first you learn the general concepts of what a database is and what it does. Then you learn about Microsoft's new 'Ribbon' the new concept in user interfaces. From there you go on to learning about defining tables, putting data in and getting it out of the database, all the things that you would expect to want to know.

As an added feature, this books meets the objectives for the Microsoft Certified Application Specialist, so upon completion of the book you should be ready to take the test.

I have only one minor complaint about the book. I know, you aren't supposed to talk SQL with Access, but sometimes you almost have to. On page 156 they say 'If you know SQL....' But even if you know SQL, you need to know the reserved words.I'd really like to see just a few pages in an appendix talking about things like the reserved words in the Jet engine.

Perfect for beginners and as a reference for experts

Simply put, It is the best!!! I (SQL Server DBA) just took a SQL Server 2000 performance tuning assignment and after looking at several SQL Server 2000 books, this one is the best for performance tuning and optimization! It is easy to read, and it got just the level of details I need. It also guide the readers step by step when dealing with more advanced topics. I certainly learned about the critical performance counters to monitor on Windows and SQL Server, so now I can focus just on the counters I need. I surely learned a lot more details about the performance monitoring, SQL Server profiling, best hardware setup for high availability/scalability and optimal configurations!

The author did put in her own experience in the book, which helps when dealing with real world situation. I highly recommend this book for SQL Server DBA's out there!

This book provides a comprehensive, no-nonsense review of Windows XP administration from the desktop administrator's point of view. You will not find lots of funny jokes or humorous antidotes, but if you are looking for a serious administrator's guide, this book will serve you well. Highly recommended!

Overall, I would say that this is an excellent resource for those wishing to enter into the world of system administration. Ford really goes in depth explaining the processes involved in administering Windows XP. I would recommend this book whether you are pursuing a Microsoft certification or not. One caveat however, do not buy this book if you want to be humorously entertained because this book gets right to the subject and includes step by step tasks, minus the stupid jokes.

This is a great overview of Oracle internals but the best part is the code depot.

All of the scripts worked as is and it was a real joy to see the results for my Oracle database. I highly recommend this one.

Another Mike Ault winner!
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 6 total.
Review Date: 2003-12-18
I have all of Mr. Ault's books, and this one is one of his best works. It contains loads of working scripts and an Internet code download to get the working code. It also has excellent explainations of the concepts and internals from the output of the scripts.

This is definitely not a beginner book, and it is as complex as any of the other advanced Oracle books. If you want super-deep details, this book is for you!

Like Having a Personal Tutor
Helpful Votes: 11 out of 13 total.
Review Date: 2004-07-09
One of the first questions you have to ask is: why a book on MySQL when the MySQL site provides such a comprehensive training instruction? The authors answer this very succinctly: the training manual is almost incomprehensible to anyone coming to MySQL new. I downloaded it and looked at it--they're right, it is!
So, I came to this new book with no knowledge of MySQL but with experience of teaching myself other software from books. This is the clearest and most interesting training manual I've seen for a long time. It started by explaining some of the fundamentals: the difference between open source and proprietary software and how to download the software you've chosen. Every step is accompanied by crisp screen captures and a clear explanation. What I particularly like is that the author gives the impression that she is carrying out the actions at the same time you are, so when faults and problems occur, she's found the same thing and talks you through. It's so refreshing after the number of times I've tried something from other books and not found the result I'm supposed to.
The layout of the pages is particularly pleasing, with a tips section, projects to work though and self-tests to ensure you've grasped the knowledge in each chapter. As a training specialist, I found this book a lesson in the correct use of the principles of training design.
What really made this book stand out for me as something new and different was the example that is used throughout to explain the principles of the database design: a company making clothes for pet ducks. It's so whimsical and amusing; you can't help but romp though the exercises. Who says learning coding can't be fun?
If you want to take your web site to the next level with interactive databases; if you want to learn how to design these powerful databases, then I highly recommend this crisp, clear and well-written book.

Rosetta Stone for MySQL
Helpful Votes: 8 out of 12 total.
Review Date: 2004-07-12
The other day I was asked to recommend a book on MySQL, which is one of the many things I am asked to do as a degreed/certified IT professional, but I digress. Knowing that most people have not yet learned the art of tech divination, I set out to find a book that would give a good basic understanding and result in the fewest phone calls for continued help from the database novice in question. While searching for this Rosetta Stone for MySQL, I came across this little gem. I skim all books I think about buying to see if the book is worth it's weight in paper, but this time I ended up reading the first two chapters at the bookshelf. The layout and content of this book is exactly what I would teach someone wanting to start using MySQL, and the computer jargon is kept to a minimum or clearly explained. This book delivers just what it promises: essential skills and a working understanding of MySQL with a bonus of PHP basics.
