... the FAA provides the complete book, free, as a full color PDF.

Having a bound, printed version is very handy; however, the complete book is freely available from the FAA. Take a look at it there before you buy this re-print.

A MUST READ for any parent-

I received this book as a gift from my parents during a time when I was struggling with my almost 4 year old daughter. She was behaving so out of character, whining and throwing tantrums. I sent my mom an email saying "Please Help Me" and was answered with my dad sending this book that is already changing our lives. It points out the obvious - the "you can't see the forest for the trees" type things. It reinforces the things that you do right, what you do wrong, and that everyone makes the same mistakes but just try harder- and it's not that complicated! There are only 12 rules to follow, and 3 lessons to teach - It's an afternoon easy read, and worth a million times what you'll pay for it.

Bottom Line for Small Business

Barbara Weltman's "Small Business Taxes 2007," is the best guide for charting your way through the record keeping, profit and loss statements, tax credits, deductions, depreciation & amortization, and cost of goods sold around for the person who files a Schedule C form with their 1040 IRS tax form.
The examples are clear, even though some have more 0's than a real small business person can imagine. She doesn't offer any gimmicks, make any promises or come-ons. Her work is straight forward, this is the Code, if it applies to your business you may use it. Readers appreciate the lack of hype which millions of Americans have learned to mistrust.
With any small business not everything applies to each individual -- this book is excellent for locating answers to the tough questions.
We did have some fun with the subtitle (JK Lasser's New Rules for Small Business Taxes) that taken at face value would read Lasser is making the rules not the IRS. But then with taxes a little humor is appreciated.
We used this volume extensively for our book and found the index very helpful in locating the material we needed and desired, when there really isn't much out there for so small a segment of the tax paying population.

I may only be a child, but this book has a lot of information both adults and kids should know. Joe's Rules got me intrested in swimming. I started swimming and I loved it. This book is great on telling parents what is good for their child's acedemic health.

Inspiring book for all, adults, children, atheletes, non atheletes and coaches.

"Joes's Rules" shows us that anyone, anywhere can be all they can be. I have personally seen Joe Zemaitis in action with his "kids" at Swim Neptune ,and they not only swim; some just for the joy of swimming, they have fun!
His book just touches the tip of the iceberg as to what an amazing human being he is: His academic record, his personal integrity, his family ethic, his committment to inspiring children to "go for the gold" even if it is simply more self esteem, and not a swim championship, sets him apart from all other coaches.
His FAST Foundation,to bring awareness to drowning prevention, is truly another piece of the pie that makes him a true leader, the Pied Piper of the young (and this old) swimmer.
Can't wait for another book!

This is a great story of a remarkable business turnaround. Imlay gives great anecdotal examples of business fundamentals. If you want to be entertained and informed, buy it. It is required reading for all our managers.

A must read for anyone caring about people AND business.

John Imlay has written a compelling and motivating book that has the power to change how you think of business and the people, the metaphorical tigers, who hunt for success through the business jungle. And in the process, bring food back to their corporate den. A very human philosophy of business revealed through our most primal of instincts. Anyone interested in being successful in business, from students to management, should read this book.

I don't know who enjoyed this book more, the children or the adults. Everyone we have shared this book with can relate to the feelings of the children interviewed. It reminds adults of what it's like to be a child and shows children that they are not alone in their thoughts.

A fabulous book that I am happy to have stumbled upon. I will keep checking for more work by Thomas Baldrick.

Francisco Dao has put together an extraordinary set of confidence builders in this book. From his personal experience he shares how to generate confidence in 53 brief succinct chapters. His examples of how to use these tools are excellent and very instructive. Having been in the field of coaching and motivation for 30 years, I was thrilled to find new ways to help my clients build their confidence. I have learned that "confidence" is the number one predictor of anyone's success. One of the things that makes this book a terrific resource is that the chapters are all about 3 pages long and I found that I could read some of the chapters, put the book down and pick it up later to read more of them without losing any momentum. This is truly a treasure chest of no-nonsense methods to increase anyone's confidence about anything.

50-50 rule + 8 motivation principles
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2007-07-20
This book is about leadership and motivation, and how both promote or demote creativity. It defines a leader as someone who has personal qualities and technical knowledge that, under a given situation, permit him or her to perform successfully a requisite function. The leader motivates people to follow him/her because everyone involved stands to gain. Everyone wins because the strategic and operational levels of the group "work harmoniously together as the organization's leadership team" (p.33).

Creativity activities, like innovations, depend on motivation, and hence the 50-50 rule. The rule states that "50% of motivation comes from within a person and 50% from his or her environment, especially from the leadership encountered there" (p.). From here the book describes two psychological theories of motivation: Maslow's theory and Herzberg's theory. Maslow's theory holds that motivation depends on physiological, safety, social, esteem, and self-actualization needs. The more basic (biological) the needs, the easier it is to motivate a person from without. The higher level the needs, such as self-actualization, the more motivation must come from within a person.

For Herzberg creative efforts are like work. As with work motivation is determined by the satisfaction of people's higher needs. A safe working environment is often a stronger motivator than a high salary. Nice stuff.

The last parts of the book outline eight principles on "how to motivate others", beginning with the enthusiasm of the motivator. I resist the temptation to describe all the principles for fear of spoiling your reading of the book. Suffice to say the book is impressive. It is well organized. Each chapter has a "Key Points" section. Chapters also start and end with a memorable quotation from motivational leaders of all kinds. A very good book, indeed!

The three rules should be followed by everyone in an organization that hopes to enlist others to achieve worthwhile purposes. Briefly, the three rules are: 1) Everyone contributes; 2) no put-downs; and 3) keep all agreements. Dr. Riley not only explains the value of these simple, yet profound rules, she also illustrates the impact they can have on any group trying to achieve harmony and alignment. Also included are tips and tools to implement the three rules. Dr. Riley's personal mission is to "meaningfully contribute to the financial health and emotional intelligence of today's work place", and I feel that anyone - in business, govenment, or family - who practices the three rules will help her realize the purpose of her book.

The biggest problem I had in civil procedure was understanding the underlying procedure. This book takes you though the decisions that you have to make when filing suit and then brings in the case law and federal rules to show how they work in the process as a whole. This book also has many handy charts that help with complex issues.
If your floundering around in civil procedure because your not really sure what your even arguing about this can help. It doesn't waste a lot of words but it gives you the structure you need to understand the issues.

I learned what I needed to learn from this book.
