You can treat this as "the" book you need to read to understand different aspects of PKI to get a "big picture". Very good analogies to the things that you use in day-to-day life. It reads like fiction and will make you happy that you chose to read this.

Explains PKI at a level better than most other options

The author has a unique ability to explain PKI (Public Key Infrastructure) in a way that is detailed and clear. PKI is a very complex topic and requires a knowledge of many other fieds including technology and security to even begin. It is beyond the grasp of the average Internet user today. After reading many other PKI books and doing hours of research on the Internet regarding PKI, I had been able to piece together the processes and basics on PKI. But after only reading the first 2 chapters of this book, I felt I understood concepts better than any other source.

The only criticism I have is that the author uses too much levity in explaining his points. The jokes are not that funny but unfortunately they keep coming.

Great for PKI newcomers

This is a great book for those fairly new to PKI. I needed to find out about PKI quickly, and this book explained it in clear terms. It begins by explaining encryption techniques and algorithms, and you don't have to have PhD in mathematics to understand it. Then it introduces PKI in logical pieces and concepts. Each chapter builds on the previous chapter, so it is really easy to understand. It shows how various applications can use PKI (SSL, SMIME, etc) as well as how a PKI can be implemented.

If you are new to PKI and need to get a handle on it quickly, then I highly recommend reading this book. It is well worth the money.

One of the best real-world examinations of PKI

I've read quite a few books on PKI now, one of the best being Schneier's Secrets and Lies, which is fairly negative on the technology over all, and appropriately so.

This book is a good deal more positive on the technology, but is not pollyanna. I think that Schneier realizes that the technology is a helpful tool, though it does not solve the human engineering problems that need o be solved to implement "real" security. This book helps you understand how to do that, and gives you a feel for where the bodies are buried.

The biggest skeleton in PKI's closed has always been authentication, which PKI does not solve, but vendors would have you believe it does. This is the first book by from a PKI house that lays those cards on the table. OF course, RSA *does* make most of its dough from selling securIDs...

But I think this one is a keeper.

A Pocketful of Wonder

Review Date: 2005-05-10
Picture books come in several different types. Some are functional and educational reads for teaching children. Some are comical romps, spurring laughter from their audience, and some are simply, delightfully, and stunningly beautiful works of art. This picture book written by Jennifer Armstrong and illustrated by Mary Grandpre, falls into this last category. The title might seem a bit plain, even vague at first but it nevertheless hints at a sense of the wonderful and magical, especially given the luscious colors and images that populate these pages. I admit that it was Mary Grandpre's cover art that first persuaded me to crack open this book, not certain what to expect, but delighted by the whimsical cover. I was well rewarded for my curiosity.

Like the artwork, Jennifer Armstrong's richly evocative writing weaves a tapestry to enchant readers from the first sentence. It's a once upon a time tale, with an exotic stranger coming to stay in a plain and pragmatic farming village. But rather than start with the traditional opening, Ms. Armstrong begins with: "A slim schooner of a woman, driven by strong winds and a broken heart, floundered barefoot across the eastern plains . . ." The author maintains her ocean/boat metaphors throughout the story, and it may at first take the reader by surprise, as the story itself takes place in a village far from the sea. But it soon becomes apparent that this is the author's intent, to show how her protagonist differs from those around her, how she yearns for the wildness and creativity she found there. Our protagonist is a seamstress, capable of creating marvelous garments with rich adornment. But the farmers want only plain, drab work clothes for their plain lives, and the young woman must live and dress as they do if she is to live among them. While she agrees to their terms, she chafes at this limitation and lack of imagination. Until she realizes she can create the gorgeous works she wishes . . . as long as they are on the insides of her pockets. You'll have to read the book to grasp the full effect, but as she provides these pockets full of her creativity to the villagers, it gradually transforms the drab and practical town into a joyous and colorful one. The heroine is the catalyst that changes those she encounters before moving on.

I will freely admit that even the adult reader may find the vocabulary of Armstrong's fanciful lists to be a challenge. " . . . frocks and pantaloons of bandle linen; also doublets farthingales, damask mantuas . . ." Fortunately, the lists don't really get in the way of comprehending the story, they merely add to the delicious nature of the tale with these marvelously exotic words. It is not a simple story for a child to read, however, and young readers who struggle with words will probably find this much too daunting! Even a parent may find it a bit difficult to read aloud parts of this without reviewing it a time or two first. That said, it is a delightful story with lovely lyrical text that is meant to be savored and that seems to trip off the tongue and dazzle with its own special magic.

Mary Grandpre's work partners with the text to make a book that is as artistic as it is poetic. Her warm and fanciful pictures are full of the magic and whimsy that the heroine sews into her pockets. With rich colors and swirling shapes, Ms. Grandpre truly captures the theme of the story and demonstrates the light and fire of creativity spilling from those pockets like hidden treasure. It is clear that this team of author and illustrator meld together seamlessly, crafting some rare and beautiful books for readers to discover.

This is a picture book that may be enjoyed by adults as well as children, showing what picture books can accomplish with their artistry and magic. While the very young can find the story too long and the text too mature, older children may find it fueling their own imagination. If you like this book, also check out CHIN YU MIN AND THE GINGER CAT, which also features Armstrong and Grandpre. I don't think you'll be disappointed.

Happy Reading! ^_^ Shanshad

This story is wonderful! Our world needs more stories illuminating the beauty that we so rarely see in our often-hectic lives. Illustrations of this caliber are hard to find. Mary Grandpre truly captured the meaning of the story - she is a one-of-a-kind illustrator. Jennifer Armstrong spins her words as if in a tapestry. Simply beautiful.

Great book for the "Business of Podcasting"! I like the clear layout with tips and reviews at the end of each chapter. I would also recommend the
Podcasting For Dummies and Podcast Solutions if you want core books and are just starting with the plan of a business podcast show. The one thing they left out mentioning is WaveLab Essential 6 with build in Podcasting for about $99.00 on Amazon. I use it for all my audio production including my podcast and love it!

A great book on podcasting that covers an overview, fundamentals, production, and distribution. Amust read for serious marketers

Review Date: 2008-04-06

I liked this book a lot. It is very well outlined. And it is very well written. I found it to be an easy read. But not a particularly quick read since it is pretty thick in page count and page size. The book is broken into four parts and 16 chapters:

I. Podcasting overview: Understanding the medium and its impact on business (Chapters 1-3)
II. Podcasting fundamentals: Planning and development (Chapters 4-6)
III. Producing the podcast: Production, delivery and legal issues (Chapters 7-10)
IV. Podcast distribution: Marketing, measuring and monetizing (Chapters 11-16)

Social media and Web 2.0 is comprised of a few tools that people and businesses can use to be a part of that community. The main one is blogging. And podcasting is a natural extension of blogging. What is said and has been written about blogging can also be said and written about podcasting. And this book does just that. Some people read books to get their information. Others listen to the radio or watch TV. I suspect many more listen to the radio and watch TV than read books.

Currently many more people taking part in Social Media and Web 2.0 are blogging than podcasting. But that statistic very well may change. And by reading this book one will probably understand and realize why. And even better, one will learn how to get involved in podcasting.

This book is specifically written for a business audience. It focuses on how businesses can incorporate podcasting into their marketing mix. It covers planning, content creation, legal considerations, branding, marketing, advertising, monetization, and much more.

I liked the chapter summaries at the end of each chapter called "Lessons Learned." They made it easy to get an overview of the book before I read it page to page. My favorite chapter was the seventh. It went into "Podcast Production." It got into sufficient detail and specifics that I pretty much saw what was involved in creating audio and/or video files. Emphasis was more on audio files.

The bottom line is that businesses should understand the power of podcasting and how to use it in their marketing mix. Podcasting can significantly improve a company's communications efforts with its customers, prospects, and the media. 5 stars!

As a podcasting and new media consultant, I've read just about every podcasting book out there (and authored one myself). This book is now at the top of the short list of books that every business podcaster (or podcaster with business aspirations) needs to read. The authors know there stuff and have done their research. I'll be referring again and again to the case studies and ideas shared in this book.

Must have for business podcasters

This book stands head and shoulders above all other podcasting books for teaching you how to make podcasting a go within the enterprise. I haven't read another book that addresses so many of the concerns that businesses have when they want to start podcasting. The other two that I have read focus on the independent podcaster and the issues that they encounter with a small focus on business interests.

What makes this book stand out so much for me is that it is written at a technical level that anyone can understand regardless of their role within a business. Every idiosyncratic element of taking a podcast from the planning stages production, copyright, distribution with rss, ROI and podcasting's role in integrated marketing is addressed in full.

Businesses and "internal champions", as they are called in the book, tasked with creating a new or social media presence through podcasting should pick up a copy. Podcast consultants, you too could learn a thing or two from this book. I did.

Many thanks to the authors!

Confused about how to conceptualize and execute information graphics? For journalists and graphic artists alike, this book is an invaluable resource for how to bring the two crafts together. The author takes care to provide real world examples that are clear and to-the-point and illustrate the topics at hand. This is an invaluable resource for small and medium-sized newsrooms in particular, as well as classrooms or individuals wanting to brush up on the state of the art of news graphics presentation.

This book is clean, simple, easy to understand. It's full of examples from daily graphics to large-scale graphics media thrive on. But, best of all, it gets right to the point of explaining why those graphics work. If you're an expert, you should get a copy as a reminder of what to shoot for and help check your work. If you're a student, you need one.

SharePoint as an application development platform is long on potential, short on guidlines. Pro SharePoint Solution Development guides the user through applciation development techniques that leverage the infrastructure (security, doc management, database access, navigation) of SharePoint to deliver application functionality. This book does not assume the reader is an advanced .Net developer, nor does it treat the reader as brand new to the concepts of application development. It cuts directly to the use of built in features and the creation of custom features and how to bind them together to create solutions.

Comprehensive guide for MS Office and SharePoint integration developers
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2007-12-13
This book offers an indebt review of how SharePoint fits in the Microsoft Office ecosystem. It delivers a variety of advanced examples, richly illustrated with sample code, downloadable from Apress, and step by step instructions and illustrations in the book itself.

The organization of the book is very convenient and the first four chapters allow the reader to brush up his knowledge about MS Offices and SharePoint with abundant external links. Each consecutive chapter after that represents a standalone example based on a real-world scenario. The examples are focused on the integration with a particular MS Office product. For example Chapter 5 demonstrates a scenario where MS Word integrates with SharePoint and Chapter 9 shows how to construct PowerPoint slides using content stored in a SharePoint list. Every example starts with an introduction and walkthrough, which allows the reader to start reading the chapter directly without losing context.

The complexity of integrating products of the MS Office family in enterprise solutions requires quite a bit of knowledge and experience thus I do not recommend this book to beginners in SharePoint and MS Office programming. While this book has a plenty of introductory and historical information about MS Office development and SharePoint customization, it does not emphasize on important steps of professional SharePoint development such as creation of SharePoint solutions, list and site template customization and provisioning. However if you are already familiar with SharePoint (WSS 3, MOSS 2007) concepts such as solutions, features, workflow etc., this is the book to put all these features in the context of enterprise applications.

The software and hardware requirements for the examples in this book are quite high, so if you want to be able to implement them on your own you need to allocate some time to prepare a system with MOSS 2007, MS Office 2007 Enterprise, VS 2008 Professional or Team Edition and for the first example MS Office 2003. In addition there are several manual actions, which require a bit more time.

Something, which may not be obvious from the title, is the heavy use of the new MS Office document standard - Office Open XML (commonly referred to as OOXML or OpenXML). This was my first exposure to this format specification and I found its use throughout the book very useful.

Overall this book is of great value to intermediate and advanced developers, working on enterprise applications based on the MS Office system or integration projects with third party vendors. The examples can be read independently and each one of them not only demonstrates the implementation of a particular scenario, but also provokes ideas for other projects.

Terrific book but not for those new to SharePoint development

This is the 5th book on MOSS 2007/WSS 3.0 that I have bought so far and it is the best as far as SharePoint development. Each chapter after chapter 4 describes a real-world project for integrating SharePoint with Office. The book assumes that you already understand SharePoint development and .NET programming. You can download the code and I have not had any errors compiling it so far. The book makes heavy use of the System.IO.Packaging namespace and so there are many examples generating xml-based office documents. This book gets straight to the point with lots of code. I highly recommend it.

I am involved with SharePoint developer education so I buy and scan through every single SharePoint title when it becomes available. There are plenty of SharePoint books out today that all cover the same basic topics. This book was special because it had a significant amount of content that I have not seen anywhere else. In particular, I like the way this books explains how a developer can integrate Office 2007 office applications together with SharePoint 2007. It goes beyond the typical 'hello world' examples and offers plenty of gems that could only have been gathered from real-world experience rolling out projects in a production environment. Congrats to Ed and Susie!

If you can't afford to take the Lotus Classes on Domino/Web....get this book! Also, after reviewing the Lotus sampe exams, I would recommend this book as a study guide. NUMEROUS typos in this book (but I can learn to live with that). Wish it was out in R4.6!

An excellent book to take one from "traditional" Notes application development to development of web applications. Unfortunately, the publishers did a TERRIBLE job of copy editing: references to figures that don't exist or are mis-numbered, paragraphs that end in mid-sentence, mis-formatted tables with items listed in the wrong column.
Deserved much better pre-publication from the editors/publishers and a higher rating.

The only book I've recommended to students.

My students have asked me many times if there are third party books about Notes and Domino that I would recommend. My answer was always no until I read Professional Developer's Guide to Domino. The authors' enthusiasm about Domino made me want to start developing and hosting web sites for clients and I'm not even a developer. The authors presented information about Domino in a easily understandable format. The book is full of useful development techniques and administration procedures. As a consultant, I have used the information in the book to help design and support Notes infrastructures. As an instructor, I found new and better ways to describe how some Notes/Domino processes work. If you are in the groupware profession, add this book to your collection and it will be used more than the official documentation. When was the last time that you picked up a yellow Notes book just to read?

this books offers very good insight to the introducing the
beginner to transactions
There are 10 chapters in this book of which I have covered 9
chapters in 2 days

chapter 5 the nwtshipper's applications breaks when
the web service attempts to create a shippercomponent during
and add method call

In chapter 6 the customer entry. the famouse cauliflowers aka com+ objects are never activated/spins during a transaction.
Maybe because they are deactivated or not using pooling.

I am on the last chapter 10 works but lacks alot of instructions
on how to set it up,
but after 2 days of hacking i finally got it to work
and when it worked, it was like magic..

This must be the only book I have in my possession which
demonstrations transactions in .net

I would like to give this book 5 stars but since the poor setup
instructions in chapter 10 I have to give it a 4 stars instead.

Real Life Examples That Work - And More

The book was well written and easy to follow. The descriptions and examples of code were the best and most concise of any I have read in .NET. But the best part, was that it also covered the material in the four previous Beginning VB/ASP books I have read, but in a more understandable and memorable way.

Full of great nitty-gritty details!

This is a gem of a book!

Ever get frustrated looking for a book that has a decent discussion on transactions? So many have half a dozen pages and a kiddie's transaction example about a bank that only ever has one customer that only ever does one transaction & of course it succeeds: great!

This is different - it's real! It's a book all about real-transactions and the things you need to know that support them - heaps of juicy nitty-gritty details. It's great to get into a meaty discussion about distributed architecture, but where the fun really starts is in designing transactional .NET DLL' s.

Apart from all the great information, another thing that comes across in the book is just how lucky we are as VB developer's to be using .NET - the power is awesome!

Wow. Very few programming books I've read do much for me. Most of them are of no more use than a reference manual. But this book....this book is different. After just an hour of reading, I now understand the basics of JavaScript. The book does a great job explaining it. The other topic this book covers is XHTML, the successor to HTML. I admire the author's constant reminders to remain standards-complient in XHTML. Good job.

I got this book for a class, but I'll be keeping it forever. Scary, eh?

I have had the pleasure of meeting Dr. Brandon and hearing him speak multiple times on the subject of project management, and I feel confident in saying that you ll have a hard time finding anyone with the depth and breadth of experience Dan possesses. Furthermore, through his academic and industry experience, he has learned to write about project management principles in a manner that is both rigorous yet easy to understand.

As a full time QuickBooks instructor for over 10 years, there have been times when I wanted a reference to validate or guide me to the best solution on practical problems that I encountered with a client's company file. This book is the answer. Mr. Sleeter has created a roadmap for both new and experienced QuickBooks accountants, consultants, and power users that can save them from many wasted hours learning QuickBooks by trial and error, or having to go back to re-enter data because the solution they tried does not work.
It goes beyond mechanical matters and deals with utilizing QuickBooks properly from an accounting, business, and technical point of view, for example finding and correcting errors during bank reconciliation. This structured resource covers the best way to work with real issues, some of which are not covered in the instruction manual like setting up customer and vendor opening balances to track aging, warning about memo information in journal entries, adjusting income accounts, and other tricky transactions. Important topics are "Things Accountants Must Know" and "Troubleshooting Data Files".
The Consultant's Reference Guide starts by describing new features of the current edition of QuickBooks, and logically progresses through company file setup and special setup issues. Numerous examples show the reader what action to take to ensure data accuracy when working with complex problems. The easy to read graphics, step-by-step explanations and organization of the contents make it worthwhile as both reference and self-paced tutorial.
Subjects covered provide an excellent balance of information like fundamental details of setting up payroll through advanced issues of networking QuickBooks and QuickBooks Point of Sale. If you are an accountant or provide QuickBooks professional services owning this book will give you confidence that the right answer to many QuickBooks questions is at hand.

A fine guide to QuickBooks consulting. I taught QuickBooks for 2 years for a local organization and this book would have been a lifesaver for many of my students. It goes over many of the features in QuickBooks as well as providing a ton of information on features (and bugs) that aren't documented in the manual. If you use QuickBooks or support clients on the software then you should look into this manual. It covers a LOT of new ground and I'm certain you'll get something out of it.
