Gigi and Zachary's excellent adventure
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2005-04-04

Gigi the giraffe and Zachary the zebra are off on an adventure, searching for the perfect career, each double page spread covering a different occupation, a series of seek-and-find games. There is a teacher nestled in her classroom, surrounded by items for a child to pick out and identify, a globe, library, map, slide, storyteller; or the service station, featuring a gas attendant, truck driver, vending machine and hydraulic lift; on the construction site there is a carpenter, a construction worker, crane, crane operator and a roofer; even a hospital, with a doctor, laboratory, operating room, scale, test tube and more.

These gaily colored illustrations offer a humorous view of the world of choices for the future, identifying occupations and the objects associated with each occupation. Each two-page spread offers a new kind of career, multi-dimensional and varied. Visit a book publisher, construction site, fancy hotel, shopping mall, supermarket, even a rocket launching at the space center. This gaily illustrated book explores a myriad of possibilities, drawings of the many facets of life, choices of employment, both white and blue collar and the tools of the trades.

The illustrations are primary colored and quirky, poised to stimulate a child's curiosity. The search-and-find concept challenges children to pick, identify and become acquainted with new words on each page. Bright and energetic, this book promises hours of fun for parents and children alike. Published by Chronicle Books, Gigi and Zachary Go to Work enjoys the same quality as the other Chronicle titles, full of ideas, the perfect gift for a favorite child. The book is labeled ages 9-12, but younger readers will enjoy this format as well, encouraged to increase their vocabulary and interest in reading. Luan Gaines/2005.

I first read GiGi, the Story of a Merry-go-round Horse when I was in the fifth grade. 37 years later I am still reading it and loving it.Set in pre WWI Vienna, Gigi, whose voice can only be heard by children until they outgrow his stirrups, canters in and out of the lives of many children, bringing joy to them.He loves the children deeply, particularly one little girl named Lili but it breaks his heart when he is often sold away from them. He has many adventures, traveling from Vienna to France and America but the story is mostly about love. Ms. Foster tells the tale simply, without condescending to her youthful audience. In fact, she treats the views and perceptions of the children with great respect. This story captures the magic of children and carousels and the simplicity of childlike joy, sorrow and faith. When I was ten, I would check it out of the library, read it with joy during the day and sleep with it under my pillow. My grandkids love Gigi too.

An important book to discern truth

Review Date: 2004-12-16
Iraq 2003 was a long time acomin' and will be a long time agoin'. Last night, before writing these lines, I watched BBC World. It showed one of its extended conference call interviews with media people in the US, the Arab world and Europe. Subject: the effects of Iraq 2003 on the media. Participants from the large media groups were worried about safety of their staff - some are still being killed. Those from Washington were worried about how they can extend embedding. The obvious response "embed on both sides," say Fridays and Saturdays with the US forces, Monday to Thursday with their opponents, was never mentioned. Why? Because the issue of reporting from all sides has never really been tackled. Arab speakers in the program focused on the politics of what's happening now in the region and its connections with the war, an understandable choice coming straight after the death of Arafat and the re-election of Bush.
GMGW, with its six main sections, 30 chapters, and successful attempt to scan the globe for contributions, seeks to tackle the core questions. Technologies are new, in war and in the media; the hazy border between objectivity and propaganda is as hard to define as ever; journalism as another way of conducting war is as alive as ever; and, above all, the difference between conflicts which can be presented as part of show biz', and those which cannot, is always important. For the brutal truth is that, for all the razza mattaz, Iraq 03 is not such a big deal seen from the angle of death (is there another angle to see it from?). Anywhere from 20,000 to 100,000 Iraqis, depending on whose figures you believe, the vast majority civilians have been killed or severely injured over an 18-month period. We are still counting, and will be for a long while to come. The devastatingly sad fact, however, is that this is a relatively small number compared with most wars , not to mention the "silent tragedies" of natural disasters, genocides, and long running conflicts. It is scarcely necessary to say that casualties on the US side, which have averaged about two per day since the conflict began, are trivial.
The contributors to this book, being involved journalists and others deeply interested in media matters, offer a wide range of clearly presented thoughts on all the eternal subjects. Their reflections are testimony to their personal commitment to serious examination of the problems, and to the unfortunate likelihood that profound cleavages of view will persist and quite possibly deepen. In what are usually called the democratic countries, this is taken as testimony of a thriving polity. Elsewhere, it is taken as a sign that hegemony hurts. A title of one of the chapters is telling. It reads "Al-Jazeera: A Broadcaster creating Ripples in a Stagnant Pool." If the U.S. Presidency is to be believed, the whole point of Iraq 03 was to make the pool turbulent. The whole debate on the politics has been about whether this is the way to do it. If this book serves to help that debate encompass both the best of the Arab world's journalists and those of elsewhere, it will have achieved a superb result. If it helps to go one step further, and persuade the US administration that belief (especially selective) is not always synonymous either with the truth, or with telling the truth, it will be a miracle.

Warm, Fuzzy, Sharing Time

I found this book in 1981 hidden amongst a treasure of books in a little oceanside grocery/odds and ends store. My daughter was five years old and was not feeling well. I was looking for some books to read her, that would be fun. I read this book to her at least four times in our two week stay at the beach and numerous other times until her reading skills got to where she could read it on her own. I have read this book to many children and they have all loved it. It is lots of fun.

It is about two totally different creatures, with different customs, lifestyles and beliefs, randomly meeting and ending up on an adventure together. They find themselves getting imprisoned in a strange place with weird customs and logic. They know their only way out is to escape and they can only do this by learning to trust each other and listen to the other's ideas.

The book was well written, is lots of fun and has the silliness chldren enjoy. This book is definitely a book that an adult can share in quality time with a child. It is a read out loud book.

engrossing one-day read!

Review Date: 2007-04-20
I've read 30 books in the first 4 months of 2007 and this has been the only book so far in which I've read the entire thing in only one day! Needless to say from the above, I thought that the book was an excellent read for numerous reasons.

Firstly, I found the precarious positions that the characters were into very entertaining... titillating, as a matter of fact. From England to India and Hong Kong, all scenarios had me glued to the pages.

Secondly, the style of writing and the plot-line jumping held my attention as I begged for more throughout the day.

Lastly, the characters were down-to-earth and easy to relate to. This relationship with the characters makes the scenarios easier to experience through their eyes.

Jude Goodwin's 'Table Talk' bridge cartoons have appeared for more than 30 years in the American Contract Bridge League's Bulletin - so if you recognize them and are an avid player, you'll love having them all under one cover at last. Humor is dependent on an understanding of bridge basics and such an audience will relish the zany moments and fun commentary imbedded in these cartoons.

This book covers basic proofreading elements that will be extremely helpful to anyone who is new to the field or wants to pursue this career. There are many insider tips that are extremely useful. Also serves as an excellent refresher for people who have been proofreading for a few years. Not all-inclusive as far as grammar, syntax, etc., go (pick up a grammar book for that), but absolutely excellent for the basics and insider tips.

Missionology 101 and then some
Helpful Votes: 21 out of 21 total.
Review Date: 2002-05-14
GO and Make Disciples is a must read for any existing or potential missionary. The facts, figures and how-to sections were more than informative. This book provides not only the basics of missionology but leads you to the next steps for anyone feeling the call of God.

The Biblical basis of missions and why some people are called to be missionaries is at the very foundation of missionary service. This foundation shows what God has in store for the missionary as well as the people he will be serving. Throughout the pages, one will clearly see that foundation and why it is so important. The text also shows what to expect on the field by providing examples from such great missionaries as Jesus and the Apostle Paul. As the reader peruses the pages, not only does the Biblical basis for becoming a missionary become clear, but also the issues that one could possibly face on the mission field, including interaction with religions other than Christianity.

The Trinity of God the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit echo in each part of a missionary's mind, body and spirit throughout the entire book. Whether the reader is a potential candidate for mission work or a veteran missionary, this book will provide insight and practicality. Because it was so full of useful information and was the first book of this type that I have read, I felt I needed to read it a second time to make sure I did not miss anything important. I highly recommend this book to anyone considering mission work.
