When I was first diagnosed with systemic scleroderma, my doctor gave me the equivalent of a death sentence. The next day I saw Maureen on television and she talked about her journey leading her to beat this deadly disease. I called her and she even was kind enough to allow me to come to her home. She taught me her healing methods with qi gong and nutritional recipes. I met her life saving Dr. Whitman, who has been by her side through this ordeal. Most of all, I want to praise her for having the courage to share and inspire hope in those of us afflicted with this condition. She is truly a guiding light in the storm!

Amazon has once again pointed me toward a very helpful resource in Maureen Taylor's book "A Place To Go". I am a nurse and mother of a son who was diagnosed with Diffuse Systemic Scleroderma three years ago at age 25. As painful as this book is to read, in that it explains so well what a patient with scleroderma experiences, I was warmed by the similarity in our sources of hope that Maureen and I have both sought. I, too, found Dr. Brown and his book the "Road Back" as well as Henry Scammell's book "Scleroderma: The Proven Therapy That Can Save Your Life" both opening the door to antibiotic therapy for this devastating disease. From medication, to yoga to nutrition, Maureen and I have turned to the same things in hope for a reversal of a disease. My son has seen reversal of symptoms, although he is by no means cured as of yet. But we keep exploring the alternative choices. The true key is finding a physician partner in your battle. Traditional medicine plays a role in recovery, but the "traditional" doctor blinded by the "miracles" developed by the pharmaceutical industry truly provide little in the way of providing hope and a cure for this disease. Quick to offer d-Penicillamine or other harmful drugs, many scleroderma patients who haven't found these books, accept these treatments as their fate and live painful, disabled lives. To everyone who reads this book - share your knowledge of its existence and of Dr. Brown and Henry Scammell's book, as you could just be opening a door of hope to someone who needs it. And offer them the Road Back Foundation as a source of support for each other at www.roadback.org. It is people like Maureen, willing to share their story, that will open the minds of the medical community and the patient to the true hope that lies in alternative medicine with some assistance from traditional medicine, by using simple, relatively harmless drugs like the antibiotic Minocin. Spread the word as Maureen's book does so well.

My name is Leslie Geraghty of Wayne, NJ. When I had first met Maureen Taylor, it was September of 2005. Maureen was one of our first customers during our Grand Opening at our Nature Store.
A graceful, well dressed, soft spoken woman. We had spoke on several occassions and I enjoyed our chats. It was my husband who informed me one day of very disturbing news ot this very rare disease that had nearly taken this womans life earlier. As he discribed the hoffics of the physical changes and personal challenges she had faced, I thought for a moment that we must be speaking of 2 different people. When we met again we spoke briefly of the illness. As we spoke it was clear this woman in front of me was the image of strength. hope, and perseverance. Maureen's book goes into some detail of her past as a child in Ireland and the journey here to the US. She goes into great detail of the symptoms that krept up day by day, the numerous Drs visits, tests, and psychological tolls she has encountered. It was frustrating to see the lengths she had to go to, to finally get a proper diagnosis. The relationship between her husband and how his denial and complete unsympathetic being basically turned his back on his wife in need, which finally did end in divorce. This book completely moved me. I could not put this book down. This is a book of hope, determination, and inner strength. Maureen now opens her home to others who suffer the same rare disease and helps them to cope with the up hill battle they face. I admire Maureen for not only the battle she fought but for what she offers to others who suffer medical problems and frustrations.

"Watercolor School" by Hazel Harrison states on its book jacketthat it is "a practical guide to painting with watercolor." This is an accurate description of this really useful book. It is complete in every aspect, and even for the more experienced watercolorist it can be used as an exceptionally valuable informational source. What more can I say? It's a great book.

I'm a serious beginner and I chose this book for what it offered and then was surprised to notice that it's a Reader's Digest book (sorry, but I guess I'm a bit of a book snob). Well nevermind because it's a terrific book. Hazel Harrison walks you through a huge variety of watercolor techniques. Great lessons and reference.

I would have appreciated specific paint colors and brands with each example/technique, but even without that it's a very valuable resource.

Over the years, I have bought many watercolor books to help me get started painting with watercolor. I wish I had found this one first. It has the basics and more. The techniques and demonstrations are illustrated extremely well. The text is easy to follow, too. In some cases, it even gives two approaches to painting the same subject matter. Good color theory, too. I know I will use this now and into the future.

It is hard to believe that after reading so many self-help books that I have actually found one with so much new to offer. Dr. Rose has a great handle on life's puzzle pieces, and is such a good writer, that I am finally starting to get (as he puts it) "a workable picture." Not only of why I feel the way I do about myself, but of what I can do about it.

There is so much practical real-life wisdom offered here, that nearly every page gives me something to chew on. "When You
Reach the End of Your Rope, Let Go!" is definately one of the best self-help books I have ever read (and now re-read).

A Fresh Approach

Review Date: 2006-05-31
So many books in the self-help genre re-cycle the same old ideas, but this book has some genuinely new and valuable insights.

Geoffrey Rose has developed techniques of what he calls Thought Farming and Emotional Detoxx (Disowning Every Thought Out to Double Cross) to actively create a new personal reality.

The techniques have a number of roots, but there is a central place for muscle testing, a.k.a. applied kinesiology. Though usually branded a pseudoscience, kinesiology refuses to go away, many practitioners have found it useful and there is some research literature on the topic that suggests that there is something to it. I have found it to be useful in evaluating many individuals, and around 50% of people seem to be able to get consistently good results using it on themselves.

Another root is Five Element Theory, which is one of the core theories of traditional Chinese medicine. These days it is not used much by practitioners in mainland China, but it remains a valuable evaluative tool.

This is a book that will likely challenge you and give you some new perspectives on how to re-balance yourself and those around you.

Warmly recommended.

Excellent Guide to Emotional Self-Healing

WHEN YOU REACH THE END OF YOUR ROPE... LET GO! brilliantly describes simple yet powerful methods you can use to locate and transform your self-sabotaging beliefs.

With a rare combination of refreshing candor, sparkling humor and gentle wisdom, author Geoffrey Rose describes how he embarked on a most remarkable journey from anxiety, depression, and low self esteem to relaxed confidence and joy. While extensive training in psychotherapy sessions had offered useful insights, Geoffrey noted that progress had been slow... especially compared with the rapid improvement possible through an alternative method of finding self-sabotaging beliefs through Kinesiological (muscle) testing.

Old traumas have the power to become negative beliefs about ourselves, so there is tremendous relief when we learn how to begin expressing long-suppressed thoughts and feelings. WHEN YOU REACH THE END OF YOUR ROPE... LET GO! provides a a very simple Kinesiological self-test which can be used with a self-testing outline to guide you through your self-healing treatment. If you'd prefer a different method, Rose offers two more: a Chinese Five-Element review, and a basic life category approach.

WHEN YOU REACH THE END OF YOUR ROPE... LET GO! stands out as a beacon of hope in the darkness, to guide you through rough emotional seas. It's rare to find a book this well-written that successfully conveys practical methods for emotional self-healing that really work. This beautifully written book is as much fun to read as it is life-enhancing; I give it my highest recommendation!

I'm not sure which was best....Reading the book WITH my six year old niece, or merely watching her expressive face as she experienced Sunny and Cloudy come to life. The books engage and entice a young reader to laugh, learn, and live. Sunny and the Chocolate Dog series conveys values and virtues in an enjoyable manner. "What is a buddy system..." she asked.....I myself had forgotten all about the buddy system. "Was I scared of the water the first time I went to the beach....". A great team approach to reading. Initially she needed help with some of the larger words, she now prides herself in the ability to annunciate and read them with ease. She has replaced the books on her bed side table with the Sunny and the Chocolate Dog series.

This Caldecott award winner is a treasure. It is a beautifully illustrated book. The illustrator did extensive research. The artwork is exquisite and correct (right down to the China pattern at the White House at the time). Earhart and Roosevelt are true heros and role models. Lots of great inferencing in the book. One of my favorite lines is that at the dinner Eleanor's brother would be her escort for the evening as her husband was busy...the line says "But Eleanor was used to that". I have asked my students,"What kind of a marriage do you think the Roosevelts had?" after reading that line. Getting the book is worth it just to hear the answers if you work with adolescents!! Students are fascinated by this book. It is a great discussion of the rarity of airplanes at the time and the roles of women. It is a story of friendship, of risks, of fun!! Books Are for Talking, Too! has lessons plans for the book.

This is one of the most charming stories I have ever owned. It is even better because it is based in reality with the contrast of dream like illustrations. It has the wonderful qualities of one of those sweet and magical black and white movies. My five year old wants me to read it to her again and again. Between this book and select I Love Lucy episodes I am showing her, she is realizing that black and white media can be relevant to her. It doesn't have to be color and have a special effect to be great. A wonderful book that adults will fall in love with as much as children.

Review Date: 2003-03-22
As the parent of a curious 5-year-old, I've been disappointed by the scarcity of historical and biographical books aimed at very young children. My daughter had an interest in Amelia Earhart since she first saw her "red plane" at the Smithsonian, so I took a gamble and bought this book for her at Christmas time...and she loved it. In fact, she liked it so much that she's insisted on giving it to several of her girl friends as gifts. It was a big hit with them as well. In fact a couple of their mothers have asked me where I got it (Amazon, of course), and whether the author has written any other children's books.

The story is simple, fun, historical, and symbolically significant (without being didactic or political). The black and white illustrations are interesting to look at, and very detailed (even the pattern on the White House china in the background is historically accurate).

With their colorful personalities, and the strength to defy cultural expectations, Amelia Earhart and Eleanor Roosevelt make great role models for little girls -- and it doesn't hurt for them to understand that the freedoms they will surely take for granted in their lives were won for all of us by women like these.

My son has been struggling with a broken marriage, and the resulting loss of his job, his home, and his pets, as well as the "one person who he thought would never hurt him, and the one who hurt him the most" for the past 9 months. It seemed there was nothing more I could do or say to get him through his days without extreme sadness and lack of self esteem. A good friend of mine suggested this book, and it has literally turned his life and his attitude around. I asked him if I could please read it when he was done, because I am so amazed that one book could have such an impact! Whatever Dr. Stanley has shared with him has certainly given him new hope, and I can't thank him enough for sharing his wisdom!

A Superb, Biblical Treatment of the Problem of Suffering
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2008-05-12
I write as a Catholic, who strongly disagrees with certain of Dr. Stanley's doctrines, such as his notion of eternal security, but I find that he offers very sound and wise advice in a number of areas of the spiritual life, and one of these areas is the problem of suffering.

The main portion of this book walks the reader through the sufferings and profound setbacks endured by many of the great figures in the Bible, such as Joseph and Moses. Stanley's exposition of these stories, in themselves, is comforting to the suffering reader -- he sees that others have walked the path before him.

Importantly, Stanley makes no false promises about escaping from suffering. While he encourages the reader to pray, and to maintain hope and faith, he does not offer false assurance that such prayer will inevitably alleviate suffering.

Finally, Stanley offers a well-thought-out discussion of the benefits of suffering - how, painful though it can be, it allows us to grow in spiritual maturity.

There is much else that can be said about this book. It is written simply and straightforwardly, but with penetrating insight and wisdom by a man who obviously has thought and prayed a great deal on the subject. It is also written with great warmth, and is a comforting book to read, reflecting, I'm sure, Stanley's long experience as a pastor.

As a closing aside, I might mention that as someone who has been immersed in Catholic life, practice and sensibility since childhood, it seems to me that Stanley's take on suffering is very Catholic indeed! There is very little if anything in this book that is contrary to Catholic teaching on the subject -- whether formal doctrinal teaching, or the informal teaching found in the writings of the saints. The Lord has planted the thought in my heart that Charles Stanley should be a Catholic, and that is something I pray for.

When life deals a severe blow, it's one thing to hear "you'll be all right," but another to hear "you'll be blessed." "The Blessings of Brokenness" is a reassuring blend of grace and truth that ministers both to the emotions and to the mind. Stanley shares reasons, obstacles, processes, and blessings of being broken. While offering truth to hold on to, the book has the relational tone of a compassionate friend, rather than a detached, academic counseling guide. It's small size, substance, and tone make the book a good choice for giving to those in pain, including grief. (It's also available in audio, a format that could be useful, since sometimes reading even a small book might be too much exertion for a friend who feels like [...], pierced, pummeled, shattered, or just plain world-weary.)

I really love the emphasis on using the Magnetic feminine ( whether you're a dude or gal it don't matter)- so much of our can- do electric alpha "let me at it" action oriented frenzied world could take some or all of this wisdom to heart in trying to achieve their dreams. I read the reviews and thought I'd give it a try. When I first got the book I wasn't sure it would be the catchy book I thought it would be. I read it once and my child absolutely loves it. I can now see why. I start a sentence now and she'll finish it. She is a few months shy of being 3. I even hear her say some of the lines while she is playing with a toy.

About the content of the book: It talks about going to grandma's house and how all these different types of animals have different methods of getting there in a very word catchy way that children like.

This is a great book for babies on up. As a 3-month-old, my son loved resting on my tummy as I read this book to him. The rhythm--tip toe, tippity toe--made him giggle every time! Now, as a 19-month-old, he has returned to this book because the pictures, the story, and the rhythm are all enjoyable!!

I first happened upon this book at the library and fell in love! There aren't many books that you stand reading over and over and over again but this one is simple and fun and the rhymes are very amusing! My son always smiles at me while I am reading this book. A must have!

Nice, light read, with quirky characters and interesting plot twists. I wish it would be reprinted, maybe as a single volume with some of his other comedic novels. I first read this as both a Reader's Digest edition and later read the full novel from the library.

This book tells the saga of the Kwimpers of Cranbury County, New Jersey, who decide to teach the government a lesson by homesteading on the fill that was trucked in to support a highway bridge. The story is told through the voice of Toby Kwimper, the family's eldest son, an elementary school football star (he never got much further than elementary school on account of repeating so much), who the girls all find irresistible. Of course, Toby has his own way of resisting the girls so that they don't get the better of him. In fact, through honesty and good will, Toby manages to persevere through all the calamities that the government, the neighbors, and Mother Nature can think to throw at him, his family. This book was sheer delight to read. I just hope Toby's still out there on his land in Columbiana because I would love to meet him someday.

At the time I read this book, I hadn't even heard of it. My mother recommended it to me, for which I am grateful. The characters are funny, but at the same time they are real and touching. The other characters are a delight and the story logically progresses. The end is totally satisfying and, at times, totally unexpected. This book should go back into print.

This is one of Richard Powell's best books. It's main characters are a family of New Jersey Piney's. As Powell grew up in Philadelphia and later retired to Florida, he obviously knew a lot about the people and the places he wrote about. The Kwimper family is hysterical. Particularly the father, who feels he is helping the government by taking advantage of their various assistance programs. The book is a true satire in that regard. The main character, Toby Kwimper (played by Elvis in the movie version "Follow that Dream") is your classic big strong dope with a heart of gold. Like all Powell novel's it's very cleverly put together with great dialogue. If you like this book, check out some of Powell's better known novels: "The Philadelphia" (later made into a movie starring Paul Newman), and my all time favorite, and Powell's last and greatest novel "Whom the Gods Would Destory" (about the Trojan War, Helen of Troy, Odyssey cycle of stories - a truly great read). Powell at one time was a creative writing teacher at Syracuse Univ and it shows. He's one of my favorite authors.

"Pioneer, Go Home!" is great fun to read. I read it as a teen in the spring of '61 on a trip from Ohio to Florida. Mom, my Aunt and I went to the movies soon after we arrived. The movie was "Follow That Dream" starring Elvis Presley. As it turned out, the movie just happened to be based on the book I had just read on the way down to Florida! I read the Reader's Digest condensed version at the time. A few years ago, I was able to find a copy of the book. It really is that good! I have read and reread it many times. It is always fun! I would recommend it highly to anyone who loves fun books and has been to Florida in the 50's or early 60's. You will like the movie, too. This portrays a more natural Elvis than his usual movies do. The story takes you back to 50's Florida when it was unique in its own way.

THE END OF AMERICAN SPORT CULTURE

Don't read this book if you are afraid to see into the future of being healthy.
Frank Forencich has put into words what may well be the best vision for the future of health and physical activity. As we more and more come to see the dangers of a sedentary life and the inability of the American sport and fitness industry to help all but a special minority of people, something has to give. Our need to make "exercise" a separate chore to be accomplished could be the best thing to let go. _Play as if your life depends on it_ shares what it could mean to do so, and provides the rationales behind it and extensive examples for getting started - all in an enjoyable, conversational read.

The missing fifth star is for the lack of references. I believe in Mr. Forencich's message that his approaches to activity are justifiable from any angle, including that of rigorous Western science, and most of the details he builds on are relatively straightforward and well-agreed upon physiology. I was surprised, then, that he has not included abundant references in the book or his web site ("...") to satisfy any skeptics and to put his case out to the scientific community, including medical professionals. While it really is crazy, as _Play..._ describes, for living creatures like people to need to seek the advice of a physician before exercising, it would be worthwhile to make efforts to help people like physicians agree with that, even in a book for everyone.

Hats off to Frank Forencich for offering a new outlook on our state of decreased health! This book offers a very interesting and educational view of exercise and physical activity from an evolutionary standpoint. Mr. Forencich is definately an original thinker and quite possibly ahead of his time with such a unique outlook on exercise. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in aquiring original knowledge about health & fitness.

Creative Thoughts on Promoting Physical Activity

"As we grope our way into the 21st century, it is becoming increasingly obvious that many of us are suffering ill health and that much of it can be traced directly back to inactivity and sedentary living. It is also becoming clear that our current programs and orientations towards physical fitness simply aren't working."

Frank Forencich has written a book about exercise that is primal, humorous and realistic. He studied human biology at Stanford University and has experience in martial art, functional fitness, massage and aviation. He has also climbed throughout North America and loves traveling in Africa to study the environment.

The author believes that most books about fitness present information about weight-loss, nutrition, strength, flexibility or single-sport performance and yet ignore the history. In this book, the author seeks to present the core concepts behind exercise.

A lot of research is very apparent in this book. For example, since WWII, he says the rate of depression has more than doubled and the use of anti-depression medications have also skyrocketed. The author might just be correct when he says we have lost contact with our bodies and the joy that occurs from spontaneous play.

Now, the author does start with the premise that we have evolved and goes into detail about human evolution. If you are a believer in creation, you can breeze on by "Life in an Alien Environment" and go on to read "The Cult of Cosmetics." Now and then the author returns to the evolutionary discussion.

The author presents some intriguing points about American society. Too often, yes, we do focus on strict routines and workouts. I guess he is right when he says we should ?play? more. I myself miss a good wrestling match, the kind you had as a kid where you and your friends ended up on your backs laughing yourselves silly. There is definitely room for play.

"When we play, we're excited and enthusiastic. There's no labor involved, no drudgery. We're focused, engaged and attentive. In other words, we're stoked." ~Frank Forencich

I'm imagining a workout video that takes this into consideration.

I enjoyed reading his theories about walking barefoot. Often I will exercise barefoot because it does feel more primal. I?ve had foot injuries from wearing certain shoes and to me the barefoot life is sometimes best. I run about barefoot as much as I can, but probably because I grew up in Africa as a child. The fact that this author has traveled so much in Africa probably has influenced him. I wonder if he has walked barefoot on the sun baked earth in Africa. To me, it was bliss. I felt equally as blissful walking barefoot in New Mexico for some reason.

I'm so glad my treadmill is finally fixed. Now I'm in the mood to go for a walk. I'll imagine I'm walking through a beautiful field of flowers in Africa. They do have those and plenty of them.

I like the authors idea about putting your scale in the closet. That is where mine lives most of the time, however I do weigh myself occasionally, normally after a diet to see if it worked.

"Play as if Your Life Depends on it" has some intriguing and original ideas. It is a book about fitness that will definitely appeal to your intellectual side.

I've always been quite active, but I have wanted to add pizzazz to my otherwise gruesome workout routine. Play as if Your Life Depends on It is an excellent guide that helps the reader integrate unconventional workout and play moves into our ordinary lives. Frank Forencich gives workout and exercise a whole new meaning by explaining how hunting and gathering is relevant to everyday physical activity. This book is as essential as it is insightful. I for one look forward to play as though my life depends on it!

"Play As If Your Life Depends On It" will motivate everyone, from sofa slugs to physical dynamos.

Incorporating the idea that humans evolved in the African Savannah, the author makes a compelling case that we need to be physical in ways that honor our ancestry. While he doesn't advocate giving up the 9 to 5 in favor of hunting and gathering, he encourages considering one's every day movements and varying them in ways that emphasize grace and flexibility.

No program is instituted, but his concept is one that deeply resonates. Whether this translates into a spring in one's step, or a determination to engage in playful activity every day is left to the reader.

Truly a refreshing, sound idea without the vehemency or stridency and guilt that one finds in run-of-the-mill "fitness" books.
