A story of StrengthReview Date: 2007-03-12
A graceful, well dressed, soft spoken woman. We had spoke on several occassions and I enjoyed our chats. It was my husband who informed me one day of very disturbing news ot this very rare disease that had nearly taken this womans life earlier. As he discribed the hoffics of the physical changes and personal challenges she had faced, I thought for a moment that we must be speaking of 2 different people. When we met again we spoke briefly of the illness. As we spoke it was clear this woman in front of me was the image of strength. hope, and perseverance. Maureen's book goes into some detail of her past as a child in Ireland and the journey here to the US. She goes into great detail of the symptoms that krept up day by day, the numerous Drs visits, tests, and psychological tolls she has encountered. It was frustrating to see the lengths she had to go to, to finally get a proper diagnosis. The relationship between her husband and how his denial and complete unsympathetic being basically turned his back on his wife in need, which finally did end in divorce. This book completely moved me. I could not put this book down. This is a book of hope, determination, and inner strength. Maureen now opens her home to others who suffer the same rare disease and helps them to cope with the up hill battle they face. I admire Maureen for not only the battle she fought but for what she offers to others who suffer medical problems and frustrations.

Practical WisdomReview Date: 2001-12-05
There is so much practical real-life wisdom offered here, that nearly every page gives me something to chew on. "When You
Reach the End of Your Rope, Let Go!" is definately one of the best self-help books I have ever read (and now re-read).
A Fresh ApproachReview Date: 2006-05-31
Geoffrey Rose has developed techniques of what he calls Thought Farming and Emotional Detoxx (Disowning Every Thought Out to Double Cross) to actively create a new personal reality.
The techniques have a number of roots, but there is a central place for muscle testing, a.k.a. applied kinesiology. Though usually branded a pseudoscience, kinesiology refuses to go away, many practitioners have found it useful and there is some research literature on the topic that suggests that there is something to it. I have found it to be useful in evaluating many individuals, and around 50% of people seem to be able to get consistently good results using it on themselves.
Another root is Five Element Theory, which is one of the core theories of traditional Chinese medicine. These days it is not used much by practitioners in mainland China, but it remains a valuable evaluative tool.
This is a book that will likely challenge you and give you some new perspectives on how to re-balance yourself and those around you.
Warmly recommended.
Excellent Guide to Emotional Self-HealingReview Date: 2004-04-20
With a rare combination of refreshing candor, sparkling humor and gentle wisdom, author Geoffrey Rose describes how he embarked on a most remarkable journey from anxiety, depression, and low self esteem to relaxed confidence and joy. While extensive training in psychotherapy sessions had offered useful insights, Geoffrey noted that progress had been slow... especially compared with the rapid improvement possible through an alternative method of finding self-sabotaging beliefs through Kinesiological (muscle) testing.
Old traumas have the power to become negative beliefs about ourselves, so there is tremendous relief when we learn how to begin expressing long-suppressed thoughts and feelings. WHEN YOU REACH THE END OF YOUR ROPE... LET GO! provides a a very simple Kinesiological self-test which can be used with a self-testing outline to guide you through your self-healing treatment. If you'd prefer a different method, Rose offers two more: a Chinese Five-Element review, and a basic life category approach.
WHEN YOU REACH THE END OF YOUR ROPE... LET GO! stands out as a beacon of hope in the darkness, to guide you through rough emotional seas. It's rare to find a book this well-written that successfully conveys practical methods for emotional self-healing that really work. This beautifully written book is as much fun to read as it is life-enhancing; I give it my highest recommendation!

Great Gift for Little GirlsReview Date: 2003-03-22
The story is simple, fun, historical, and symbolically significant (without being didactic or political). The black and white illustrations are interesting to look at, and very detailed (even the pattern on the White House china in the background is historically accurate).
With their colorful personalities, and the strength to defy cultural expectations, Amelia Earhart and Eleanor Roosevelt make great role models for little girls -- and it doesn't hurt for them to understand that the freedoms they will surely take for granted in their lives were won for all of us by women like these.

A Superb, Biblical Treatment of the Problem of SufferingReview Date: 2008-05-12
The main portion of this book walks the reader through the sufferings and profound setbacks endured by many of the great figures in the Bible, such as Joseph and Moses. Stanley's exposition of these stories, in themselves, is comforting to the suffering reader -- he sees that others have walked the path before him.
Importantly, Stanley makes no false promises about escaping from suffering. While he encourages the reader to pray, and to maintain hope and faith, he does not offer false assurance that such prayer will inevitably alleviate suffering.
Finally, Stanley offers a well-thought-out discussion of the benefits of suffering - how, painful though it can be, it allows us to grow in spiritual maturity.
There is much else that can be said about this book. It is written simply and straightforwardly, but with penetrating insight and wisdom by a man who obviously has thought and prayed a great deal on the subject. It is also written with great warmth, and is a comforting book to read, reflecting, I'm sure, Stanley's long experience as a pastor.
As a closing aside, I might mention that as someone who has been immersed in Catholic life, practice and sensibility since childhood, it seems to me that Stanley's take on suffering is very Catholic indeed! There is very little if anything in this book that is contrary to Catholic teaching on the subject -- whether formal doctrinal teaching, or the informal teaching found in the writings of the saints. The Lord has planted the thought in my heart that Charles Stanley should be a Catholic, and that is something I pray for.

THE END OF AMERICAN SPORT CULTUREReview Date: 2003-08-19
Frank Forencich has put into words what may well be the best vision for the future of health and physical activity. As we more and more come to see the dangers of a sedentary life and the inability of the American sport and fitness industry to help all but a special minority of people, something has to give. Our need to make "exercise" a separate chore to be accomplished could be the best thing to let go. _Play as if your life depends on it_ shares what it could mean to do so, and provides the rationales behind it and extensive examples for getting started - all in an enjoyable, conversational read.
The missing fifth star is for the lack of references. I believe in Mr. Forencich's message that his approaches to activity are justifiable from any angle, including that of rigorous Western science, and most of the details he builds on are relatively straightforward and well-agreed upon physiology. I was surprised, then, that he has not included abundant references in the book or his web site ("...") to satisfy any skeptics and to put his case out to the scientific community, including medical professionals. While it really is crazy, as _Play..._ describes, for living creatures like people to need to seek the advice of a physician before exercising, it would be worthwhile to make efforts to help people like physicians agree with that, even in a book for everyone.
A Refreshing ChangeReview Date: 2003-07-14
Creative Thoughts on Promoting Physical ActivityReview Date: 2003-07-30
Frank Forencich has written a book about exercise that is primal, humorous and realistic. He studied human biology at Stanford University and has experience in martial art, functional fitness, massage and aviation. He has also climbed throughout North America and loves traveling in Africa to study the environment.
The author believes that most books about fitness present information about weight-loss, nutrition, strength, flexibility or single-sport performance and yet ignore the history. In this book, the author seeks to present the core concepts behind exercise.
A lot of research is very apparent in this book. For example, since WWII, he says the rate of depression has more than doubled and the use of anti-depression medications have also skyrocketed. The author might just be correct when he says we have lost contact with our bodies and the joy that occurs from spontaneous play.
Now, the author does start with the premise that we have evolved and goes into detail about human evolution. If you are a believer in creation, you can breeze on by "Life in an Alien Environment" and go on to read "The Cult of Cosmetics." Now and then the author returns to the evolutionary discussion.
The author presents some intriguing points about American society. Too often, yes, we do focus on strict routines and workouts. I guess he is right when he says we should ?play? more. I myself miss a good wrestling match, the kind you had as a kid where you and your friends ended up on your backs laughing yourselves silly. There is definitely room for play.
"When we play, we're excited and enthusiastic. There's no labor involved, no drudgery. We're focused, engaged and attentive. In other words, we're stoked." ~Frank Forencich
I'm imagining a workout video that takes this into consideration.
I enjoyed reading his theories about walking barefoot. Often I will exercise barefoot because it does feel more primal. I?ve had foot injuries from wearing certain shoes and to me the barefoot life is sometimes best. I run about barefoot as much as I can, but probably because I grew up in Africa as a child. The fact that this author has traveled so much in Africa probably has influenced him. I wonder if he has walked barefoot on the sun baked earth in Africa. To me, it was bliss. I felt equally as blissful walking barefoot in New Mexico for some reason.
I'm so glad my treadmill is finally fixed. Now I'm in the mood to go for a walk. I'll imagine I'm walking through a beautiful field of flowers in Africa. They do have those and plenty of them.
I like the authors idea about putting your scale in the closet. That is where mine lives most of the time, however I do weigh myself occasionally, normally after a diet to see if it worked.
"Play as if Your Life Depends on it" has some intriguing and original ideas. It is a book about fitness that will definitely appeal to your intellectual side.

Excellent new outlook to fitness!Review Date: 2003-07-01
Inspiring and RevolutionaryReview Date: 2003-07-21
Incorporating the idea that humans evolved in the African Savannah, the author makes a compelling case that we need to be physical in ways that honor our ancestry. While he doesn't advocate giving up the 9 to 5 in favor of hunting and gathering, he encourages considering one's every day movements and varying them in ways that emphasize grace and flexibility.
No program is instituted, but his concept is one that deeply resonates. Whether this translates into a spring in one's step, or a determination to engage in playful activity every day is left to the reader.
Truly a refreshing, sound idea without the vehemency or stridency and guilt that one finds in run-of-the-mill "fitness" books.
