I thought Elledge had covered all the numbers in To Go Forth in the Midst of Wolves, but he has presented a whole new set of problems for Margo in this inventive sequel. I couldn't put the book down. Highly recommended.

A fast-paced story that examines the human struggle for freedom and dignity in two countries. Elledge has created a memorable cast of characters for this sequel.

A great "first book"!

This book, along with others in Oxenbury's Tom and Pippo series, was one of the first stories my son (now 2) would sit still for, and they continue to be counted among his favorites. They are short enough for toddler attention spans, the illustrations are interesting to reader and child alike, and the stories are wonderful.

As expected, Oxenbury again finds a sweet, simplistic way to reenforce the everyday life lessons that parents teach their toddlers. This time it's about going out on a cold day for a walk. Lively illustrated, the story is short and direct. Perfect length for those short attention spans.

This great expose of the kookiness out there... er, in there, makes for fascinating sociological reading, but most of all, it's amusing! Never knew that there were so many weird conspiracy theories outside the X-files...!

'Twas A Fine Fine Read

A wonderful historical novel following the plight of the author's great, great grandfather as he sails from Ireland to America at the age of 12 in the early 1800's, the hardships he faces not only crossing the Atlantic but also once he reaches New York City. The reader will experience what it must have been like for a young Irish immigrant to attempt to eke out a living while dreaming of one day moving west to settle in what was then the frontier of America. An easy to read, well written story that will keep the reader's interest throughout.

Riveting account of immigration and settlement of the Midwest

This is a riveting account of one man's (John Gilmore) immigration from Scotland and Ireland to New York and eventually his move westward to Illinois. After a hazardous crossing of the Atlantic and arrival in New York City at age 12, his experiences and hardships in New York are graphically portrayed by the author. When the decision is made to move his family to the unsettled prairie in Illinois, the author excels at blending family history and historical events as he acurately describes the family's difficult travels and their lives in the early 1800's in a wild new frontier.

Excellent reading! I share with the author pride in a great family heritage. John Gilmore was also my great, great grandfather.

Imperative for anyone interested in relevant ministry
Helpful Votes: 22 out of 26 total.
Review Date: 1996-11-27
Barna studied some of the most successful churches in America (defined as those growing rapidly while having a major impact on the lives of people). What he found provides a new definition of effective church ministry: remaining true to the Gospel while remaining relevant to society. Anyone who thinks "church" has to mean "organs, robes, and cathedrals" will hate this book. Anyone who wants to know how to make church more relevant to Americans' daily lives, without compromising the Gospel message, must read it. This can (and should) change the way you do ministry

Hard to find fault with this one!
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2003-08-10
This is a very good book. In it, Barna examines growing churches and then extrapolates growth principles that they have in common. Barna warns the greater that to simply copy the methodologies and formats of successful churches without first analyzing one's own culture is to guarantee failure.

Barna refutes to give pat answers to difficult questions. He urges the reader to understand the spiritual principles behind successful churches and then apply them to his or her own unique situation. The emphasis on leadership is superb. No church can grow if the pastor does not understand what it means to be a leader and to lay out a God-given vision for his people. No statement is truer than this: If the people in your church do not seem truly excited or passionate about ministry, he is because they do not have a leader who models those traits for them."

I must confess that I am a real Barna fan and find it rather difficult to find fault with his work. Although at times he can get bogged down in statistics this book is remarkably lucid and worthy of sharing with my lay leadership. It has a clear, concise and limited purpose and Barna fulfills it admirable.

I've been reading this story with my son every night since he was just a few months old. The illustrations are amazing (same artist does the Harry Potter covers), and the wording is just as beautiful. My favorite line: "One by one, potatoes close their eyes, listening to the sound of bells -- the peppers' lullabies . . . "

This book is the first book my son learned to read. We would read it every night before bed - it was too cute - until his baby sister came along and ripped it up. Well, 11 years later, I finally got another copy and it's mine! It is a great book!!!!!!

TERIFFIC LEARNING TOOL FOR WATER COLOR LOVERS OF ALL LEVELS
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2003-10-04
Guy Lipscomb has an absolutely marvelous talent for "painting" with words his techniques for putting water colors onto paper. This is a talent that many artist/teacher authors seem not to share. Most art teaching books I've read contain gorgeous artwork, but the descriptive text that comes along with nearly always leaves me lost and struggling somewhere along the way, wondering whether I've missed something in the translation. Mr. Lipscomb, on the other hand, gives such clear and concise instruction that I really believe even the newest beginner can follow along. I'm VERY impressed with this book; from the general information at the beginning, to his glorious descriptions of his "Go With the Flow" technique later on. There is valuable information to be learned in this book for watercolorists of all levels.
I'm truly in love with this book, and I hope he has another book, or two or three, in the works somewhere. I'm waiting...

A New Way to Water Color

Watercolor is perhaps one of the most beautiful and graceful medians an artist works with. The image of water and colors swirling around a page is like the grace of a ballerina. This book took that dance one step further. By using the open-flow method which is taught in this book you allow yourself to be opened up to a new music to waltz by. The open-flow method immediatly gives you a beautiful back ground that is warm and inviting without being overbearing. The painting seems to have a soul to it before the painting has even been started. The book is easy to follow, and helpful hints are given throughout for techniques and an easier way to do things. This is a book for the beginner to learn and be inspired or the experienced to learn new techniques. I recommend that every aspiring artist read this book and practice its techniques.

This is a great book/CD! I am a speech therapist and use it with many different types of special needs young children. No matter what has been going on before, as soon as I put in this CD the children are all engaged.
This is great to use if you are doing a transportation unit too!

This is a great interactive book. I work at a Pre-school for special needs students and we have music every Friday we use this book and the children love it. One of our teachers uses it in her class on a regualr basis. What a fun way to get the children involved and recognizing different vehicles and the sounds they make.

This book brought back many fond memories of my youth. Back in the pre-Castro years I had many Americans friends who lived in Cuba. The list of essays by John Parker presented in this book are very informative. They relay the romance, humor and wonderful Zest for life of the Cuban people before the tragedy Castro's revolution. I have enjoyed reading this book. I will never forget my American--Cuban friends.

Nostalgic short stories about life in Cuba pre-Castro -

Review Date: 1998-05-11
A must-read book for anyone who has ever traveled or lived in Cuba in the pre-Castro years; as American "colonistas" (as we were called) I returned to my heartfelt memories as a child who grew up as an American living in Cuba. The personal vignettes, as described by John Parker, celebrate the way we ALL should remember Cuba for its customs, traditions, and -- most importantly -- how those young, patriotic men gave their lives for their attempt to "free Cuba" from the dictatorship of Fidel Castro. This book has been donated for the "Brothers to the Rescue" (Hermanos al Rescate) effort towards the continuing effort to see our return to Cuba someday.

The impact of such a small book has been evidenced by reviews we have seen in Latin quarters around major U.S. cities, resulting in requests for finding this book (privately sold by Golden Quill Inc. through the efforts of Giles Gianelloni now reachable at "gilesg@gte.net"). Books & Books in Coral Gables, Florida, had carried the book until sold out.
