I read this book in High School and found it to be absolutely inspiring. While it is beautifully written, it also offers the reader an underlaying message about individuality and overcoming obstacles that makes the story very hopeful. I will never forget the opening paragraph, which I think speaks for itself when the protagonist says: "...I still became myself. Against impossible odds, became myself."

Extremely moving tale

"Run Softly, Go Fast" is a great book about a boy growing up during the Vietnam era, and his stormy relationship with his father. The book is so beautifully written that it will bring you to tears. Its a story of love, loss, and miscommunication. Don't miss it.

What an exceptional blend of empathy, creativity, and good old-fashioned common sense for the contemporary parent. The author obviously had children of her own--chapters are written in short, conversational passages that can be read 5 minutes at a time--a near necessity for today's time-starved parent.

One of the experts who reviewed this book said that she "wished she had had it when raising their children." I can't do better than that, but I can second the statement.

Dr. Susan Smith Kuczmarski is a social scientist who has spent twenty-five years as an educator, lecturer, and authority on family culture. The great thing about THE SACRED FLIGHT OF THE TEENAGER is that, unlike so many other educational guidebooks out there, Dr. Kuczmarski doesn't dwell on dysfunctional families, but those normal parents and teens
working together to survive adolescence.

The book is divided into the follow categories and sub-categories:

Part 1--Letting Go: The Sacred Step; Pain; The Art of Argument; Tai Chi; On Stepping in and Stepping Back; A Feast of Laughter; Superteen Takes Flight; and Turtle Medicine.

Part 2--Keeping in Touch: The Wisdom of Goats; Values; Changing Values; Hello in There; Tips for Talking to Teens; Letting Feelings Out; The Judge and the Detective; and Buried Treasure.

Part 3--Exploring: Surfing Life; Rude and Cantankerous; Fending for Themselves; Gunny Sacks; Freedom; Nourishing Mistakes and Hard-Won Lessons; Primer on Drugs; and Ground Rules.

Part 4--Acquiring Skills: A Boat on the Water; Maneuvering in the Adult World; Behind the Wheel; Work Discoveries; The Spirit of Giving; Relationships; Singing Heart--First Love, Passion, and Sex; and Looking Ahead Together.

Part 5--Connecting: Witches, Aunties, and Guides; Play and Nourishment; Creating Families of Their Own; Becoming a Group Member; Learning Leadership; Beach Glass and Exploring; Mental Shift; and Self-Acceptance.

I have always been a big believer that it is my job, as a parent, to help my children develop strong morals and values that they can take with them when it's time to go out on their own. Dr. Kuczmarski reiterates those beliefs, and then provides practical advice on how to go about letting your teenager take off into the world. This is the perfect book for parents struggling to find a balance between being helpful and being overprotective and judgmental, and for teens wanting to gain knowledge on how to interact with their parents.

I agree with the previous review. Rich Hendey has truly redefined the sport of sea kayaking while staying remarkably in tune with kayak novices. I once saw this guy execute a triple barrel roll in rough seas with 6 foot swells and he never lost his sunglasses! Word is that Hendey is contemplating a ride over Niagara Falls this summer (the first ever for a kayak). I don't know if that is true or not, but if there is one guy who could pull it off it is "Whammo" Hendey.

Also, Hendey will be inducted this fall into the Sea Kayaking Hall Of Fame in New Oxford, PA.

If you read just one book this year, let this be it. It's enough to make you want to quit your job, give up disco dancing for good and just paddle, baby.

Hendey is a kayaking god!!!

Anyone who knows anything about kayaking knows that Rich Hendey is the ultimate authority on the sport. I met Rich in 1986 in Gettysburg, PA. He helped me master the treacherous waters in and around the area. This is a guy who I have spent lots of one on one time with. He used to say to me, "Housely, there is only one way to kayak -- all the way!" This attitude permeates his writings on the sport.

For those who are unaware, Rich gained a fair amount of notoriety in the 1980's as club and party DJ under the name DJ Whammo. He soon chucked that lifestyle and got back to nature. I heartily endorse this book.

Biography reads like an Adventure Novel

The title "Criminal Genuis" just scratches the surface of the brilliant yet twisted character that was Edward Rulloff. Mr. Butz brings us a biography that reads like a mystery or action/adventure novel. There are times you want to cheer Rulloff for his brilliance and tenacity, but in the end the reprehensible acts for which he was convicted, and for which he was accused, make you feel otherwise.

Rulloff's charisma leaps off the page, as he coerces henchmen to do his bidding, and convinces accusers of his innocence. The author compares Rulloff to Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's character, Professor Moriarty, which might raise a few eyebrows, but the similarities are striking.

I recommend this book highly; as a biography, slice of history, an examination of the history of Linguistics, criminal study or just a quick and exciting read. It is quick because it is a book I find hard to put down. The author has taken me to 19th Century New York, and despite all the horrific deeds, it is a place to which I like to return.

The stories are based on the adverse effects that behaviours, attitudes and actions have had on the lives of others. Therefore, if the readers can benefit from recognising symptoms of their own issues that have caused problems, then there is the possibility that they can take corrective action before suffering strikes them.
John Smale has created analogies, examples and metaphors for the world and humanity. In this way we can learn afresh by looking at ourselves from a new perspective and overcome problems.

SMART FITNESS: Focused, Time Efficient Conditioning for Executives on the Go

Well-written and practical guide
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2008-01-16
This book is impressive. Mr. Squires provides a clear, concise and do-able system for improving health and fitness. The author's message is not sterile science, but practical application of some better known and some lesser known mind and body techniques. In many ways, the training methods are quite unique (body weight exercises). You may find yourself wondering, as I did, why many of us believe we need thousands of dollars in equipment to achieve a high level of fitness.

Some of the material is likely to remind you that you've either forgotten or never properly applied some of the success principles you've learned in the past. This is accomplished through transparent discussion of the author's past successes and failures. The author draws heavily upon personal experience combined with reference to published research, keeping the reader interested while reinforcing the message being conveyed.

Mr. Squires refers to himself as a life-long learner, and it is obvious he has learned much. His wisdom is delivered with warmth and style. I recommend this book to anyone starting on the path to improved health and fitness or wanting to build on what they've already started.

This book makes getting fit--fit with daily life. Very motivational!

David Squire's professional yet personable writing style, combined with years of expertise create a very motivational, well-written guide for anyone who wants to improve their physical fitness. His plan is simple, do-able, convenient and truly effective. More than just focusing on the physical aspects of fitness, he also helps the reader understand how to use visualization and goal setting to achieve results in fitness and all areas of life. Truly a must read for anyone interested in self-improvement.

Also he saw his best friends Mi-Su and BT kissing and wonders why he hasnt tried to kiss Mi-Su yet and will he get the chance to. Also BT has just rode a skateboard down Dead Mans Hill, how can he do anything to match that. A funny and entertaining look at the struggles of a teenager dealing with the new changes in his life. As a long-time Jerry Spinelli fan, I was truly excited when given the chance to review his latest, SMILES TO GO. If you loved MANIC MAGEE or WRINGER, be sure to take a look at this one.

Will Tuppence is a typical freshman. He is worried about skateboarding, his annoying little sister, and hanging with his friends, Mi-Su and BT. But, as normal as that sounds, there is another side to Will. His fascination with science gives him a serious approach to life. His idea of a fun time is spending hours stargazing at faraway galaxies, and recent news that a proton can actually die has Will constantly concerned about just how long life can go on. His concern about protons becomes the underlying thought that occupies his mind as he stumbles through his freshman year.

Other things besides the proton problem are beginning to spin out of control for Will. After witnessing a secret kiss between Mi-Su and BT, he starts to wonder why he hasn't tried to kiss Mi-Su. She is suddenly looking like more than just a mere friend. Skateboarding has always provided a great release for Will until BT manages the impossible - a death-defying ride down Dead Man's Hill. How can Will even attempt to match that? There is also the constant pestering of Will's little sister, Tabby. How can he concentrate on his school work or attempt to train for the upcoming chess tournament when she's like an annoying mosquito buzzing through his life?

With SMILES TO GO, Spinelli takes his readers into the life of Will Tuppence. In his traditional straightforward style, he presents Will's challenges and triumphs in a way that left me chuckling and teary-eyed, often at the same time. I think Spinelli recognizes that his loyal fans are now a bit older and has given them a story to match their growth and maturity.
