The first of many Lets Go guides I've bought. I used this book like a bible when I was in California. Great maps and great advice on where to go. Hollywood Blvd has great places to eat, you can skip Musso & Frank's (wasn't what it used to be back in the day). Try the Pig N' Whistle, the best chicken soup I've ever had! This guide book has great vintage shopping ideas and free places to visit. I stayed at the USA Hostel and it was wonderful (minus the post office bells in the morning). With the help of the hostel & this guide book I went everywhere by bus, subway and foot (you really shouldn't walk in LA its not like NYC, the blocks are longer and the sun is more intense, get a bike or wait for the bus or rent a car)

BEST TRAVEL GUIDE EVER!!

My wife and I are 26 and 25 and neither of us had been to France before. We went with a very tight budget about $1,000 for two weeks. Let's Go was awesome, we followed their advice to bike ride out of Dijon, it was incredible! We got to do a wine tasting at a former castle and the vineyards were picturesque.

Then we went to Grenoble, the music on the solstice was wild. Seems like everyone in that town has a band and they were all playing until about 3 AM. We then followed their trial up one of the alps above the city. We brought a picnic purchased in the market that morning and that was very satisfying.

From Grenoble we went to Avingon, the hotel they recommended was cool and so was the Pope's palace but we found the city heavily touristed and that was sort of jarring. We went to the Fountain de Vecluce and did end up having a great time (we took the books advice and rented a kayak to travel down the river to Isle de la sugur -spelled wrong-) that was a lot of fun. But the Fountain itself was very disappointing the book did not make clear that it dies down and escapes through cracks below the pool and does not overflow except in the spring. That was also very heavily touristed.

Paris, well Paris was awesome. We had both the let's go guide and the book "Paris on $90 dollars a day". Both were great but the Paris specific guide was obviously rather more detailed. It was also neat because it suggested itineraries based on how many days you had in the city (we had 4).

To sum up. The trip would not have been nearly so good if we hadn't had Let's Go or had instead say, Lonely Planet. Thanks for all your help Let's Go and keep up the good work!

A must read for visiting Ireland

I received this book as a gift from my husband the year I was going to visit my grandmother in Ireland. It was terrific!! Not only was it informative, but it actually made you feel as though I visited all of the places listed in the book. I have since re-read it and also just came back from my second trip in less than 10 months.

Just want to let the reader from Boston know, you have to go and visit Ireland. You will never forget it and you will always want to go "home" again and again.

Absolutely Fantastic

Well, I've never been to Ireland, and now I'll never have to go! I just finished reading Let's Go: Ireland 1998 from cover to cover and it was fantastic. I never read so many restaurant reviews, hotel reviews, and pub reviews in my life. My favorite section was Practical Information where you can find out who to call in Dublin when you trip and fall or lose your luggage. I may not need that info right now, but who knows? If I ever go to Co. Cork, and furthermore lose my luggage, I may not know what to do but boy will I wish I was in Dublin. Even though the information in this book shines, it is the writing that makes this edition a classic in the annals of travel writing. I think it was the editing. The researchers did a good job, but I could tell that most of the value added to the book from the previous year came from the keen eyes and golden pens of these two fabulous editors. For instance, circumambulate! Who else would be able to work that word into a budget travel guide. Five stars!

Just a quick review of the Let's Go guides. I have used three of them now, and they were all extremely well researched and structured. They making traveling on a budget simple, and not at all stressful. I recommend, even more, insist, that every budget conscious traveler invest in one of these books - it will pay for itself in about a day - maybe even over lunch!!!!!!

Essential Reading for UK bound people on a budget

This book is excellent and compulsory reading for anyone visiting the UK within this year! The individual sections are written by different people, mostly students I think. You can really see how they have sussed out the places that offer the best value for your money in Britain.

In my opinion, the best sections were by Daryl Sng, who covered Central England and Wales. Those interested in UK nightlife and pubbing will find his recommendations useful. His candid and to-the-point writing saved me a lot of time and pointed me right to the sights that I needed to see. Made my planning a whole lot easier and saved me tons of time!

I'm absolutely glad I pick up this book prior to my trip. If you're planning to go to England anytime this year, don't miss this.

My golden find

When I was about to leave for an 8-month assignment to New Delhi, I went to my local book store to buy Lonely Planet's guide to the country. But unfortunately (or fortunately) the store only had this book instead.

After reading it -- or more like browsing through -- and experiencing the country, I've found that the guide's very informative and spot on. The thing that I found to be most helpful is about the Indian culture and the street life. These are especially important if you intend on taking to the streets, where you'll see that anything is possible.

The prices mentioned in the book tend to be a bit off, but not that much.

The book also has a lot of humor without losing focus, and also more entertaining than the Lonely Planet book I have (Central Europe)..

Now I'm off to look for the France version.

Highly recommended!

After winding up pretty much abandoned in NWesn India (long story), my copy of Let's Go: India was my bible. Their writers are accurate, observant, pithy and ballsy. The info's good, the recommendations excellent and *they're funny* which I cannot say for any of the Lonely Planet guides I've read.

Let's Go is a book for a budget traveler -- there are some higher-end listings but you won't find Bangkok's Taj Mahal hotel listed. Instead, you'll find tiny guesthouses run by tiny women overflowing with personality and good advice -- who can paint your hands with hemp, teach you the fine points of Bollywood cinema or take you sari-shopping.

I used Let's Go throughout Rajastan and Gujurat as well as in Bombay/Mumbai. It was so good that I've taken versions to Peru, London, Thailand, Malaysia and Italy. I recommend the entire series.

I bought this for my 21 month old son to try to interest him more in the potty we got him. We tried it out in the store and read him the book while he was in the shopping cart. Boy was this a mistake because after reading it to him four times he demanded we keep reading and threw a huge fit! He was immediately in love with this book.

I have read it to other kids up to age 3 in my home daycare and I don't know what it is but they all adore it. Maybe because they can relate. They also enjoy flushing by pushing the flush button. I've seen them pick it up on their own and "read" through it.

Also, four days after buying the book, he started going to the potty on his own to sit down. He has actually used it a couple of times, too. Coincidence, maybe? I don't know, but either way it's a great purchase. Your child will be obsessed with this book!

Let's Go Sociology is a guide to internet sites of interest to sociologists and sociology students. It is, in fact, a great starting place for anyone just beginning to browse the web. Whether locating census data or finding out about careers in sociology, this book can guide anyone through the maze that is the internet. Let's hope the authors write more Let's Go books for other topics of interest to web wanderers. Even the price is great

"I Went Walking Fans" won't be disappointed

Review Date: 2001-08-12
My daughter cut her front teeth on her board book edition of I Went Walking. It was the book that had to go everywhere with us, the book that I had to buy twice. So it was a natural when Lets Go Visiting came out that we had to get a copy. The good thing with the hardcover edition is that it's very large and my daughter, now two, has a great time counting all the brightly colored animals. She cant get enough of the rhyming story and all the different animalsthis time, they are baby animals. Her favorites are the little black kittens. The bad thing about the hardcover version is that it doesnt stand up as well to all her love as the board book pages in "I Went Walking" do. The pages are taped and she cant teeth on it (though not for lack of trying.) So maybe soon theyll come out with the board book editionuntil then, well keep buying another book when shes loved the older one to bitsand keep on attempting to show her how to take care of her books.

A Visit at the Farm

"Let's Go Visiting" is the delightful to sequel to "I Went Walking". Even though they are both simple stories, the story in "Let's Go Visiting" differs from "I Went Walking". Having both books won't leave children or their parents bored with the same story from these repetitive sentence books. "Let's go visiting. What do you say?" brings in baby farm animals, ready to play! This book utilizes counting to six and teaches the names for the baby farm animals (kittens, piglets, calves). The wonderful illustrations are active and create their own story, complimenting the simplicity of the text. Although this book is recommended as a read aloud for babies through toddlers, I would also include it as an independent reader for kindergarten and first grades.

Even normal people from normal families have a certain amount of shame. This book helps to identify, personalize and deal with the shame that we have been piling on ourselves since childhood. Make sure you do the exercises at the end of each chapter. They are very valuable.

Practical Guide to Resolving Shame
Helpful Votes: 106 out of 109 total.
Review Date: 2000-03-28
Letting Go of Shame is an excellent self help guide. Each chapter ends with practical excercises. The material is presented in an orderly fasion, working through the issues one by one. The positive role that shame plays is covered, but the focal issue is toxic shame. It is easy for the reader to identify with symptomatic consequences of shame as each source of shame is presented. It is complementary to Bradshaw's classic book on the subject and in many ways is a simpler presentation for the novice. Complex and technical language is avoided. This is a practical self help guide for anyone dealing with the self inflicting pain caused by shame.
